Glad to hear they aren't going away. I somehow missed Posi's post.

I have no intention of using the service either. I'll freely pay $10 for a special game expansion like the Wedding Pack, but not for something I can get in game. It's just one of those things with me, sort of like not paying for influence.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think what is confusing people is that they are thinking of this as a money making project. Instead it was supplying something the customer has been asking for but at a price to discourage buying it. ie. They don't actually want to sell a lot of respec's.

I know that confuses people because they are used to businesses working to make money. But in the case of renames, transfers, and respec's these things are all priced high to discourage their use. If they wanted to make money off of them they are well aware that they would all sell like hot cakes at 3 - 5 dollars each.

    3. Convenience: For those out of Trial Respecs and Vet Respecs with no Freespec or Vetspec in sight, no high level character to earn currency, noone in game to give them currency, or no desire to use Wentworths/Black Market this will be a convenience.

    [/ QUOTE ]

How in the world are you out of respecifications? I think I have used all of 5 total across 60+ characters since the game went live.

    Freespecs

Posi already answered this above. Freespecs are going no where.

    ::Sheesh::
  3. [ QUOTE ]
*edit* Just to be completely unsubtle here - Yes, I am suggesting that NCSoft deliberately priced it "high" to try and discourage you from buying it. If you really, really, really, really have to have one, there it is. Otherwise, find a way to get it for free in the game. At least if you DO break down and buy it, you're paying NCSoft instead of a RMT'er.

    [/ QUOTE ]

And SlickRiptide wins the thread in one.

The above is so true. Oh and I have no idea but I keep wanting to read your name as slickreptile.
  4. [ QUOTE ]
I am trying to get clarification on what is ok to say and what is going to get deleted. If I made posts that fit into the discussion, and those posts were not flaming, attacking, insulting, or anything of that nature and they were deleted, and not part of a chain that was deleted, I want to know what crossed the line.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If you get directly mod smacked you will get either a PM or an email about it. The mods don't just mysteriously delete a post. If you post just disappears it was part of a chain that had an earlier post in it deleted by the mods.
  5. [ QUOTE ]
I am just trying to understand what crosses the line because even posts that aren't insulting or attacking the mods still get deleted.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually what causes that is the way posts chain in the forums. If I post something over the line then oh Zloth posts replying or quick replying off of my post then Pax, then smashmouth, and then you. That is a chain it gets broken anytime someone posts in reply to a post above mine. So what happens is my post was over the line and gets mod smacked. That also automatically removes Zloths, Pax's, Smashmouth's and your posts. Then you wonder what you did to get modded. But you where not the person modded.

The above scenario describes 90% of the missing posts that people wonder about. They think their innocent post is what got modded even though the mods never even touched it. Or didn't touch it directly. If you don't recieve a formal notice from a mod that your post was removed you were not directly modded but instead a collateral victim.
  6. [ QUOTE ]
Anyway, got the answer I wanted to see someone finally give.

The other issue brought up that I thought was crucial:

Is Pwnz going away or are these rules going to start applying to Pwnz? Leaving an area that only thrives as a breeding ground for the activities you prohibit seems rather against the whole idea of refreshing the rule set.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually somewhere in this thread either Lighthouse or Koschej mentioned that Pwnz and forum games will be left to play so long as they don't violate rule 16. Those to forums are pretty much free to continue on their way with that one caviat.

Yes, as long as it is done constructively.

Again, as long as it is done in a constructive fashion it is fine, however the moment that attacks and insinuations begin to be made, they will be moderated out.

    [/ QUOTE ]

But one issue is by what criteria and definition is such considered constructive. I question the legitimacy of this.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Ok, there are good and sound reasons for not having hard and fast well defined rules of what constitutes a constructive post etc. But as to why you don't have hard and fast written rules defining them. Simple to cut the rules lawyers off at the knees.

There is a category of poster who will try and define the rules exactly and get them in writing etc, then they will dance the line never crossing it but always pushing up to it and nudging it. By not making the rules hard and fast that negative and destructive behavior is discouraged. Instead the person dancing close to the edge can be mod smacked because while yes perhaps it was borderline it was the 5th, 10th, 20th, 100th time the moderator has had her/his attention called to that poster for exactly that behavior.

Another game and its company instituted something called a High Maintenance Policy to deal with this type. In that case if you keep coming to the GMs attention over and over never actually crossing the line but eating up lots of GM time to deal with the player and the aftermath the player can and will be banned including perma banned for continuing to push this.

In our case the moderators are simply keeping the flexability to slap down these types now.

And if you find that you are worried that the mods might smack you down for violating this then perhaps you need to stop and evaluate your posting pattern. Perhaps you are not being constructive to the community to a whole.
  8. [ QUOTE ]
I gotta say that reading through the fresh rules and this thread makes me feel as if I should seek legal representation before posting. I'm concerned that over-moderation, or at least the fear of over-moderation may do more to stifle the constructive and useful posts and responses on this board.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Why?

These are pretty much standard rules for any message board. And they are the rules this board has been operated under for the last 4 years. All that has happened is that they where polished a bit and reposted so you would be reminded of them. Nothing has changed with the moderation so why would you suddenly be paranoid.

Oh and you did just violate the legal one. And that is a dumb claim to make anyway. Private message board their rules. Freedome of speech etc do not apply to private message boards.

Again, as long as it is done in a constructive fashion it is fine, however the moment that attacks and insinuations begin to be made, they will be moderated out.

    [/ QUOTE ]

But everything counts as insinuation or an attack if we even mention the community team.

So I ask you, please, tell us how we can actually discuss this stuff here without moderation.

Give an example if you have to, I am just not getting it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Pause, take a deep breath. You are over analyzing things.

Really the way to think about it is this. If you are hesitant to post it because you are afraid you might get mod smacked then you probably shouldn't be posting what ever you are about to post. Really it is as simple as that.

If the discussion is straight forward and you are not being hostile or defensive in your posting there should be nothing to worry about.

And last there is no simple example that can be posted because the situation changes literally from post to post depending on what is happening. thus my comment about if you are hesitant about posting it you probably shouldn't. I usually stop and review my posts for tone or content first before posting and in a number of cases I've then not posted it because I realized it wasn't helping the discussion.

    [ QUOTE ]

But hey, it's still your playground and you get to make the rules. Nice job getting those polished up

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's about keeping business and pleasure separate, Flea. We, as forum-goers, really don't need to know why various bits of disciplinary action take place, or whom they affect; if we follow the rules of the realm, we typically won't find ourselves in a position where we would need to. If threads are closed for reasons other than straightforward rules violations, the community reps often do post to tell us why, and that's a very courteous action on their part. But the back-end stuff like issuing warnings to people or banning them really isn't any of our concern.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Also discipline and the response to it isn't a public spectacle, nor is it something that should be subject to public debate. The forums are not a democracy and you are not making your case to your fellow forum posters. In a discipline situation the only people you need to make your case to are the moderators and/or their supervisors.

Yes. It ignores the sender (their global, from what my chat log has been telling me) as a spammer. So just click that button for e-mails, and also left-click the spammer's name and select "ignore as spammer" for any tells you may get.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I understand that the button replaces the /ignore_spammer and /gignore commands for in-game e-mail spam. What I'm asking is whether it also replaces the /petition that was officially recommended in this announcement from Lighthouse. Should we still be filing a /petition before hitting the new Spam button, or does the button now take care of that for us? For that matter, the same question applies to the new "ignore as spammer" option for /tells.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You probably should always do the /petition as well.
  12. There isn't multiple pools of slots that I can see. The free ones, the vet ones, and the purchased ones all appear to go into the same pool. I would interpret the limited time offer to mean that accounts created at some point in the future won't get the 2 free slots. Not that the 2 free slots will go away at some random point.
  13. [ QUOTE ]
and praytell, how much do the extra slots cost?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I just clicked on the large dollar sign on the right side of the screen and see these prices.

    1 slot - $5.99
    2 slots - $9.99
    5 slots - $19.99

I bought the 5 slots earlier today and also paid a dollar something in tax as well, but I'm in California.
  14. Well I tend to typo like mad and backspace a lot to fix it. This normally makes doing my bio semi frustrating. I just finished creating my newest villain Dracoterranis and realized I had done all that backspacing to fix words and not had it go wonky on me once. Even if it still does it occasionally this is a vast improvement to it.
  15. <AR>

You know I haven't seen anyone mention either in a beta thread or here. This one...

Yeah someone fixed the bio section of the character creator so you can backspace in it without it going nuts.
  16. [ QUOTE ]
How do we redeem our free slots? Mine aren't showing up anywhere...!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Ok when your logged on and looking at the character select screen. The very bottom slot should either have a dollar sign in it or an arrow. If it is an arrow then you have unassigned slots and can assign them by clicking on that slot. If it is a dollar sign then you need to click on the big dollar sign on the right side of the screen to buy more slots.
  17. I really like the presets to help make characters faster.
  18. [ QUOTE ]
Can we get a rationale from the devs as to why they felt the need to remove anonymity from the game with the removal of the global/local wall? Some of us actually liked having a bit of seperation between player and characters.

    [/ QUOTE ]

What removal of anonymity? All they removed was the illusion that you where anonymous. The tools to find out your global existed all along and could be used by anyone who was aware of them.

Essentially all they have done is made the tools for this a bit more obvious.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
Because it happens on Xbox Live every day? Because the same thing happens to telcos all the time?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not the same as a telco, the thing that puts an MMOG at risk is that they police the text chat channels and take harrasement complaints etc. So they will either need to police it all or police none of it. And because they have opened themselves up by policing the text channels it is only waiting to happen.

So long as the game or the game company doesn't provide the voice channel they are fine. Ie, team speak, skype itc.... there can be no expectation that the game company can police that. But if it is provided as a resource by the game then watch out.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
    [ QUOTE ]
thats going to be the rub...unless there is a master recording of all channels....how do you prove the 12 year old with the microphone is dropping every F-bomb word combo he can think of over voice chat?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Why would someone want to "police" voice chat? Treat it the same way you do text - if you don't like what someone's saying, slap them on Ignore.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Because at some point one of the game companies will get sued over not policing the voice chat channels. You can bet on that law suite happening and when it does it will likely kill supported voice.
  21. [ QUOTE ]
    Ah, how fickle is fandom.

For years we have taken comments like, "Gosh, you know what would make this game better? Voice! Just like that Other Game has." Now that it's coming, we get complaints of doom and assertions that voice is unnecessary and threats to quit.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually there is a solid group that every time this comes up steps up to say it isn't a good idea. Many of those same people are here posting in this thread. Basically I have never had a positive experience in an MMOG using voice with random strangers. My experiences have varied from Meh to downright fleeing and not looking back at the group.
  22. [ QUOTE ]
(seriously, who isn't on vent, TS, skype, etc. by now?)

    [/ QUOTE ]

Me, I have zero desire to talk to random people I meet on the internet. My friends that would be a different matter but random people no. One of the reasons I quit DDO was the built in voice chat.
  23. [ QUOTE ]
*shiver* Voice chat is a bad idea, but at least it's not integrated into the game.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    I agree completely.

Please don't link it into the game so you can see if it is on or off, that way people won't assume you have it.

    Meh... Just Meh.
  24. Very nice guide but I'm not really seeing any spoilers in there.
