So I am cautiously optimistic.
Oh exactly. Of course Paragon Studios will be delighted to take advantage of the people who just must have it now. That is clearly part of the plan. If you are patient you likely won't have to spend anything beyond your base subscription cost, but if you want every thing now....
  3. Morgan your argument doesn't hold up under examination.

If. And I say if you could play the game without subscribing to it after you bought the box you would have a case. But that doesn't work. Just try to play beyond your 30 free days after buying a boxed online game.

Now after the game goes Free to play/VIP they won't sell the boxes anymore and that clearly supports the entire negation of your point.

All you buy when you buy the box is the device needed to access the game. Your monthly subscription is what gives you access.

If books were only limited time, ie you go to the store and buy them and the store comes and collects them after 30 days if you don't keep paying a fee, or if you bought a CD and the store came and collected it after 30 days if you didn't pay a continueing fee you might have an apples and apples comparison.

But because you buy a book and take it home you now have full permanent access to that book so long as you retain possession of it. The same applies to CD's and your other examples.

In none of the examples you use do you have to pay a continuing fee to actually use the item in question. That is why you have a good argument that you own the item in question. With COX all you own is the software on your computer. You don't own any of the access to the game, you rent that access and that is it. IT IS NOT THE SAME THING.
  4. Yes you assumed.

Right now there are powersets you can't use if you don't own the correct expansion. Think of this as the same sort of thing. Only unlike now you can save your paragon points and spend them only on things like the new powersets etc. No one will be forcing you to buy the 10 extra enhancements slots, extra costume slots, extra costumes, permanent costume powers and the like. Those kinds of things are purely optional for your enjoyment and enhancement.

It seems quite reasonable that if you save your 400 - 550 paragon points a month and only spend them on the costume set expansions and powersets as they come along you are unlikely ever to have to spend any money beyond your base subscription.

If you go wild and buy all of the extra's you can then you will spend money.

Guess what? I regularly buy the costume packs and the like so figure every 3 - 4 months I'll be spending an extra 10 - 20 dollars on my COX account. I don't figure my habits will change with Freedom. Only now I'll have extra toys to buy and spend money on and you know what? I likely be doing just that.

Yet right now there are people who have the bare minimum they can buy on their account with no optional things anywhere, or maybe 1 or 2. And they will continue to play the game exactly the same. So they will do even better and likely be piling up their Paragon Points over time as they won't be spending much of them. Unless the devs can find the right bait to tease them into spending.

Remember one of the devs goals for some time now has been to dangle new toys out in front of people to lure them into spending money. You didn't think that was going to change?
  5. My first reaction is "pretty". Now to go watch it again a few times.

What will happen to those who have already invested so much time of their life's and money playing with one of the (Soon to be restricted AT's)? Should we choose not to play in the VIP server? I wonder.

Err A the question makes zero sense because the VIP server is an extra server to play on not the only server VIP's can play on.

Now part 2 and the devs have clearly answered this. If you don't have enough months of time to have unlocked tier umm, 5 then any restricted AT's will be greyed out so you can't unlock them until you either. Have enough time to unlock them. Spend points to unlock them. They will not be deleted or anything.

What do you mean you don't think the devs will answer that? It was answered by Zwilliger way back on the day this was all announced. Oh wait he isn't a dev he is a customer service rep.

Hmm, that came out a bit more sarcastic than I meant but oh well.

Well it looks like episode 2 airs next week. If I had to guess.... Episode 3 was stronger than 2 and they wanted to show that the characters settled down before going back to episode 2 where they probably are still feeling out the roles. Or was that each other? Anyway Next week is them moving into the offices that they were moved into this week.

A: Current subscribers and former subscribers that reactivate their accounts earn 400 Paragon Points per month beginning July 1, 2011. Any active subscriber also earns Reward Tokens in our new Paragon Rewards program.
  9. I must now login to the game to facepalm.

This reward token unlocks 1 Paragon Reward

Does 1 Paragon Reward buy 1 slot?

Dang it but I am confuzzled.

    Lisa
    Yes.

You will have 3 slots full on T7 and 3 slots empty. You also have been receiving 1 token per month since the beginning of July so if this launches in say september you will have 3 tokens available to fillup the remainder of Tier 7 with.

Keep in mind that after Freedom goes live you get 1 token per month.

The old system Enslaved - you got 1 token every 3 months and 1 token per year. The new system Freedom - you get 1 token per month + 1 token per year. So you earn the rewards faster in the new system.

Nope you haven't bought everything. You instead are trying to steal more benefits than you have purchased and are screaming that you are robbed when you find out that the benefit you want to claim really isn't yours.

That is not the case. And this is ultimately how I believe the Premium tier is not nearly functional as it should be since the players have added value and purchased the content.
If you don't feel that premium is worth being free then remain VIP. That is after all the goal of the devs. And you are essentially stating that they are accurately achieving their goal of making VIP much more appealing than Premium.

Where exactly is the problem with this? The goal of Freedom isn't to have everyone be Premium and buying things. It is instead to have as many people as they can signup for VIP. So again this is bad? Why?

According to Positron you will retain every benefit you have now. Just for the record 75 months converts into 31 tokens.

XP Boost sounds like sacrilege to me, in any way shape or form. The fact that such a thing will exist in any way to me foreshadows being able to fork over real life cash for XP at some point. I know it's not the same thing, and I'm being extreme, but it's definitely a step in that direction and it doesn't sit well with me. This is the first thing about COH Freedom that has rubbed me the wrong way.
XP boost is already an existing Veteran reward. It isn't something new. Your chasing the horse long long after the barn door was opened.

According to the side-by-side, VIPs will have access to the invention system. Sorry if I'm being obtuse, but I just don't get it. Help!
You won't have access to the invention system if you drop down to Premium before tier 7. If you are a VIP you will have access to the invention system from the moment you become VIP until you drop down to Premium.

The other aspect of choice only arrives at tier 9, when there will be a larger field of rewards, no specific reward being requisite.
Yes that was unclear in the initial announcement. With this Power Point and talk it becomes clear that you don't have the freedom to skip rewards but you do have the freedom in the order you gain them.

Now when Tier 9 is unlocked you do gain absolute freedom in how you spend your tokens on that tier. Because some of the items can be bought multiple times.

    Yes tiers are just earned.

Each tier gives X benefits for having the tier.

Each tier has a number of slots you can spend tokens on for other benefits, filling a tier up unlocks the next tier.

The only wibbly question I have is do you have access to the next tier when the one before it is full or when you spend your first token in the new tier.

That the Tier 9 VIP rewards will be a rotating list. That way you don't always have the same 3 options to buy for Tier 9 VIPs.

Err sort of. Lets say that you have spent spent 2 tokens and reached tier 3.

You get there by spending 1 token on the 1 available slot in tier 1 and the 1 available slot in tier 2. This gives you Rookie and Trenchcoats which you have spent tokens on.

So filling tier 1 gives you access to a 5 charge mission teleporter 1 Super Pack, and 2 Dual Inspirations.

Spending the 1 token on the only slot in tier to gives you Trenchcoats.

Achieving the tier and I am unclear if you gain the benefit for accesss to that tiers level or filling it in. but achieving tier 2 unlocks Huge Avatars, SG Access for Premium accounts, Trading for Premium accounts, and In-Game Mail for Premium accounts. It also unlocks those things for VIP accounts but since they are available to them it won't be noticed.

Ok, Tier 3 Unlocks. Create/join Private Chat Channels for premium.

And has slots you can spend tokens on to gain Greek Symbols, Shirts & Kilts, & Weapons and sprints. Those things will take 3 tokens to fully unlock. At which point you move up the scale and gain access to new permanent benefits and some you get to pick the order you gain.
  20. I generally like the new splash screen. Though I admit it does look more like they are going to slam together in a hug rather than hit each other.

The reason that the devs don't give any official recognition or support to any of these uses of the /data directory is that they can't guarantee that changes to the game won't break them.

Clearly when the client was originally designed there was thought given to third party mods but then for various reasons the devs appear to have abandoned it before the game went live. So it is there but an unsupported feature. Basically it is use at your own risk.

But yes the devs actively frown on moding game files. Using the /data directory? Nah that they just turn a blind eye to because it might break tomorrow or it might not.

If the controller isn't a built in part of the base game box then why would the mastermind be a built in part of COV? Even more with the free access to COV they completely removed any special gain that might have been claimed. After that there is nothing supporting any continuing claim that the mastermind was somehow unlocked by buying COV.
  25. Hmm, Ok, interesting and that was a nasty thing to do to Alison.

I wonder how long they will run with the 3 teams, I'm not certain why but I'm expecting the new guy to get it. Probably because the opening credits don't have him in that shot of everyone standing outside the office in the Warehouse.

And last but DAMN did the second episode of Alpha's rocket off. The character ticks I was worrying about have been toned down. They are still there but not nearly so annoying or a problem and the entire case they pursued was fascinating. Ok a show of hands on how many people are certain that he survived the end of the episode? ::raises hand::
