After looking more closely at this, I'm kinda annoyed that Ollie is going to be a brunette. They went from a blonde without the facial hair to a brunette with the facial hair. It's like they're obligated to miss the mark.

Quote:They looked old to me at the time. But now that I consider it, I had a slightly more youthful perspective at the time.Well, 21 Jump Street was about kid faced police officers going under cover, and the oldest one on the show was 25.
Not to much of a stretch playing an 17-18 year old. -

In review of this case we have a thread that's a complaint not really about the free item itself, but rather the build up to it and manner of distribution. The response to which has been some rather incorrect (and occasionally half-joking) assertions that free is always good, along with some folks pointing out that free isn't always good (in a likewise half-joking fashion). It doesn't look like a whole lot of real mental gymnastics or genuine naivete is involved.

I think so. It may be happening on my Super Reflexes character as well, but I haven't been playing him so much lately. I'll check when I get a chance this weekend. Like I said: I thought this was already a known issue.

Quote:If that was going to happen, it already would've. Several times over. Due to any number of catalysts. And maybe it already has...If they'd started with something more interesting the reaction when the next freebie didn't 'measure up' would've caused a collective whine so powerful a wormhole would've opened up and swallowed the earth.

Back before the aggro cap was nerfed I'd run around Perez Park with my Tanker and gather a veritable horde of enemies and sit near the Atlas entrance with a horde of Skulls and Hellions all clambering over each other trying to hurt me. It seemed like there was always a Kheldian who'd eventually come along and blast them for a bit before going 'Yay! Badge!' and flitting away.
With my level 50 FF Defender, I like to stand next to low level enemies (ideally on rooftops, often in the Hollows) and activate Force Bubble.
With my Sonic/Sonic Defender, Aria of Effect, I occasionally stand next to a Police Drone with Disruption Field toggled on the Drone and dance as if I've turned it into a radio. Sometimes I "sing" in Local while doing it. -
Same here. And as I recall, last I checked it was happening on my WP tanker when he activated one of his toggles as well. I thought there was discussion about this bug in beta at some point, so I just assumed it was known and would be addressed in time.

All the members of my old Supergroup The Knights of Paragon, who are virtually nonexistent (though the Roster indicates that some few of them *have* logged in at least briefly in recent memory).
The Me of a couple of years ago, who was more enthusiastic about playing In Character. I miss that guy. Don't know where he went. -
It would be boring, and it also wouldn't jive with the given parameter in the OP that "The item could be almost anything currently available in the Paragon Market". If they would have started with something more interesting, it'd make it easier to not fall into the cynical line of thought that it's always going to be some penny-ante throw-away.

I regarded it with all due suspicious cynicism and noted the bomb nestled in its virtual bosom. It seems safe now that it's been disarmed, but I'm keeping it 10 feet from my other power icons, behind the bomb shield and chorus girls. Just in case.

Quote:And if it's free candy, have it x-rayed. And if it's a free vacation, make sure to read the fine print. In short, if it's "free" it should be regarded with suspicious cynicism. If the next freebie is a giant wooden horse wheeled into my yard I promise to look into its mouth before claiming it.

I remember when the Trojans didn't look a gift horse in the mouth. That turned out well.

Quote:Currently it's determined in advance (who knows how long in advance - it could be determined right before it's put on the Market) and then anyone can log in and get it at the appropriate time. This week it was an XP Booster.I am a bit confused, and skimming the thread did not unconfuse me:
Is the free item determined once and then anyone who logs in can get it, or is the free item random when you log in?
I ask because the market contains things I unwant, so I don't want to go claiming things if I can't tell what they are in advance... -

It's unfortunate, but it's been pretty well asserted that this will never happen. So, even if they change your powerset such that it's all unpalatably click based when before you could play it as all toggles and passives, you're either stuck with it or you have to start over.
-
But then it's not a free bonus item.
Mind you, I personally don't think the bonus item is that bad, and indeed like this program (even if I think they could have started out with a better item - even a better item that would have been useless to me, personally). But I can see the analogy. -

Given the beret, a more appropriate Walrus Man 'stache would have been Jamie Hyneman's.

Which is irrelevant to that particular comment that was targeted specifically at the comment that "it's pretty rude to openly complain about someone giving you free stuff". I'm glad we've mutually established that said comment is not necessarily true.
Quote:If the guy obviously wasn't prepared to give you free salami then your comment that he ought to be giving you free salami could be considered at the very least obnoxious by the sub maker who was just trying to be nice to you with the free bacon. *shrugs*
EDIT: And, incidentally, they *were* prepared to give 'free salami' and just about any other topping available on the menu.
