You know, I could argue this back and forth, but I think I'd get more results smashing my face against a brick wall. At least it would produce a pretty pattern.

I'm sure that's meant to make them as flexible as possible for different avatars, but almost all the non-normal mapped faces have some form of expression, like a small smile, or a frown, or a slightly puzzled look, and so on - those are what they need to add to the normal mapped faces.
No, no they do not work fine. What normal maps result in is a horrible, waxy and unrealistic look that clashes with all the other, non-waxy parts we have in the CC. With clothing it works fine at adding texture, mostly because it doesn't result in a horrible shiny look.

All normal mapping does for faces is slam it straight into uncanny valley territory.

We already have examples of great faces; the Praetorian Clockwork faces and the Bioluminescent and Organic Armour faces were incredibly highly detailed and looked great. They worked with the existing CoH style and were far better quality than all the old faces.
The new normal mapped faces, Steampunk and Monster packs along with the upcoming Chinese Dynasty face, all look terrible. Given the general negative feedback both in Betas and from what I've noticed in game, I know I'm not alone in that.

Not to mention tripping into the Uncanny Valley is a pretty amateur error that I'd expect from myself and people on my Uni course (digital animation, so I'm not just talking outta my butt-plate) not from people in Industry.

Yeah, still trying to argue when all you're doing is digging a massive hole for yourself is really, REALLY smeg-headedly stupid.

You tried to be all big and clever, and Aracna steamrollered you. You claimed 'obvious' only after she'd given an example, rather than come up with one on your own. She then mentioned that, while what she mentioned had been a part of it, it wasn't THE problem. How is that 'obfuscating the truth' instead of 'simply being smarter at this junk than you'?

Give it up, already. It's embarrassing to watch.

Oh gods, yes, this. The Bio and Organic faces, along with the Clockwork faces, are all what we SHOULD be getting. High res and detailed and GOOD.

The Normal map faces are not good. They are about as far from good and right as you can GET in this game. They are the antithesis of everything graphically good in this game! They are EEEEEEVVVVVILLLLLLL!!!

Hopefully that makes the point. Please, guys, STOP using the uncanny valley inducing Normal maps on faces. NMs work great on clothes. But all you've successfully proved is how BADLY they work on faces. Please, enough?

    This is good to know.

However....this was mentioned in Beta. A lot. Why does it have to be until now till it's fixed?

Yeah. You seriously keep dreaming that, man.

I think this thread is pretty much done, now.

Yeah, I would provide screen-shots of what I mean...but there don't seem to be any handy on the Wiki or anything. Annoyingly.
  8. Whoever thought normal mapping on faces was a good idea (Hint: IT'S NOT!) obviously thought this was a good idea too.

Dear god, QA people, what is this I don't even
  9. Techbot Alpha

Vanguard, specifically the back-detail armour plate that all their NPCs have (two variants, in fact, one for Minions and LTs, the other for Bosses)

The suggestion, which I honestly shouldn't be having to make, is to give Players that back detail(s). Because, you know, the excuse was always 'We can't do back details besides capes'. Which is no longer true. So....?

    EDIT: Blargle, Ninja'd!

    Someone is arguing with Arcanaville....

    *fetches a deckchair and chocolates*

    This should be amusing.

    Best. Summation. EVER.
  12. WoW doesn't have high kick powers like Martial arts does.

Also; the Vanguard Back detail. Which should have been made PC compatible already, given the rest of the armour was. Still no idea why it hasn't come out yet...

    VG Back-Plate

It's been how long now since back details were opened up?

Come ON, guys, get it released, please? This should have been out as soon as backpack tech went live.

Yeah, I think we're done here.
Caroline, can you get me some of those beta-tested Lemon bombs? This seems like a pretty decent scenario, don'tcha think?

    Cave Johnson, signing off.

This only happens when people make stupid suggestions 'backed up' with comments like "It should be easy" or "I can't see why this would take much effort", with as much actual knowledge as someone who has no actual knowledge of anything to do with game making.

I'm no programmer. I took one look at the whole scripting thing in 3D software alone and nearly ran a mile. But I also realise that, hey, this stuff is really damn complicated. And, given the results some small errors in coding have had over the years, anyone claiming "It shouldn't be hard!" is practically proving themselves to be an utter nitwit.

Which is only reinforced when they then try and argue with Arcanaville. You know, the person who even the DEVS defer to from time to time and on an unofficial basis?
Which is the CoH equivalent of challenging Chuck smegging Norris.

That, and whenever I play a game with massive facial customization like that, I usually end up ignoring most of the options anyway.
    Good for you.
The RP community, on the other hand, like having full customisation options and plenty of choice.

    Agreed.

Just because there are multiple people in a shared world has nothing to do with teaming. NOWHERE does it state I am obligated to team with people.

And while, yes, I actually ENJOY playing with people I like and will choose to do so...that is it. My Choice.

Although possible, the problem I see with that is; why would people take a power like that when they can just take fly instead and pretend they're the Batman (etc)?
  20. Can confirm those two as being Rogue -> Hero missions. Was running them just the other day on my re-named Stalker I was taking Hero side XD
  21. Yeah, the lack of 1-50 Praetoria does kinda suck. Especially when you then get treated like Primal from 20 onward. It...kinda ruins the immersion. And the potential cool things they could have done.
  22. Simply, Yes All of them fit into the CoHVerse timeline. Even my technically un-aging vampiric character, Leon DeFeurard, has his history fully mapped out back to Medieval England where he was born. I'm the kinda zany who loves filling in backstories like that.

All of my characters have an age when they start. From there it's simply a case of keeping track.
  23. Even at a first glance, there's no need to repeat the section after the second Fade In

I would be interested, except for currently being neck deep in University, which already includes a lot of projects.
Depending on how fast you plan on getting stuff done, however, I'd be free by Summer?

Upping the challenge is fine....so long as it's via difficulty controls.
Having way harder than basic as a Praetorian standard? That's not cool. Saying 'I find it easy' a la Leo doesn't cut it when other people find it much harder.

If you find things too easy, you can always up the difficulty. If things are too hard? Well, then you are stuffed.
Besides, even from a purely mechanical PoV rather than opinion, Praetorian mobs are provably nastier than Primal mobs at that level. They have more attacks, more debuffs and more exotic damage types. Not to mention occasional total immunity to Mez that can render Domintors and Controllers totally impotent.
Some ATs and Players find it easy.
Others do not. That is part of the problem.
