Point taken, but the lower memory footprint of XP is still desirable (~400MB RAM taken up on a clean install), since City of Heroes still officially supports XP only (again, splitting hairs). Otherwise, I agree, Win 7 all the way. (I run all three, have PC's on XP, Vista and 7... the Vista one isn't fast enough for Win 7 anyway.)
If one finds a machine preloaded with it, would consider it if I was in their shoes, particular if the manufacturer satisfied all the HCL voodoo to get it to run in the first place. -
Pre-made desktop systems suitable for COH Ultra Mode:
Asus - CG Series - http://event.asus.com/desktop/CG_Series/
Alienware (same as Dell) - Hell, almost anything they make will do. - http://alienware.com
Gateway (same as Acer) - FX Series - http://www.gateway.com/programs/fxse...pnav_computers
Voodoo (same as HP, but good luck finding one) - http://www.voodoopc.com/#/productsfirebird
I'd recommend Radeon HD 5600-higher numbered cards for Ultra Mode to be at max settings. NVidia isn't doing so hot right now, but if you can get a GTX 2XX or 4XX card, with the 10's digit higher than 6, (260, 280, 460, 480 are all good. 420, 240 won't run max settings.) everything should be fine.
Processor should be fine regardless. Avoid Intel chips that don't say Core on them (Core 2 duo/quad works but both are on the way out, Core i3, i5, i7, i9 are all good). The less expensive machines may have some good Pentium Dual Core among a few bad apples (some have poor L2 caches, which does matter, or no virtualization support, which doesn't matter for gaming). I know less about AMD, but I'd expect anything named Phenom to steer you towards win, I hear the new Athlon II's are cost-effective and good as well.
RAM should be OVER 2GB: 3GB minimum, 4 is good, 6 and above is candy.
Hard Drive: look at the RPM's and SATA speed. Higher is better. Capacity is good, but moot... you'll want speed over size for gaming, a slow writing Hard Disk is an enormous bottleneck. RAID is pointless on gaming systems, although people will argue otherwise about RAID-0. I say pass, unless you want to use the PC as a DVR for some reason. (A specialized HTPC would fit this role better for less.)
This should save you a lot of time picking something out. Have fun! -
Still generic... 0xc0000006 could be anything if it's coming from Windows XP.
Trying to Install: If it's the installer, I get this error code on my brother's IBM Thinkpad a lot when it's DVD Drive wasn't connected fully into the expansion bay; it would give me a reading of the files on the drive, but none of the .exe files would work or give an error message other than that. Try copying the installer to other media (USB Thumbdrive at least 4 GB or larger) and see if that helps.
Already Installed: This could be a number of issues. If you're playing the game already, I'd leave a ticket with NCSoft's Tech Support. Otherwise, I think it's time to post a DXDiag report or a HijackThis to help us play whac-a-mole for you. -
Quote:Windows XP 64-bit SP3 has an expiry date of 2014 on security updates compared to Windows Vista SP2, with a projected date of 2013 (which may change if SP3 is to be made or not). Both are eclipsed by Windows 7, which like Vista SP2 was released in 2009, but has yet to receive a Service Pack at all.I plan to finally upgrade to a 64bit system.
I am not picky about which OS I get, xp 64 bit, Vista 64 or Win7 64.
What I want is one that will be the most painless and least useless when it comes to CoX. Or least painful and most useful...
Basically, I want everything to be the same as now, but I want more RAM and a better CPU and GPU. That means upgrading my OS as well as my hardware.
So which one plays nicest with CoX?
Resources wise, 64-bit versions of any of the three operating system requires more memory than their 32-bit counterparts, so in any system OS 1GB of RAM would deliver middling performance at best. XP will use the least amount of resources of all three (but also hits a brick wall at DirectX 9 compatible titles), with 7 being second, and Vista coming at third being 10-20% slower than gaming with Windows 7 in most configurations.
The Point: XP would be worth it if you can still get your hands on it. That would assume you have a System Builder copy, or have a discontinued desktop/laptop in mind at a wholesaler with XP 64 preinstalled... (TigerDirect, looking at your direction), with the understanding that the PC won't get security updates within three years and can't use DirectX 10 or 11... if you only play CoH, then that isn't much of an issue if you know that your PC hardware would support Vista or 7's minimum requirements anyway; just buy it later.
If you play other titles that support DX9 (which are small but will increase in the future) then XP should be passed. Windows 7 will be supported longer and costs similar to Vista editions, so Vista provides no considerable benefit over either XP or Windows 7 IMO.
Edit: Nevermind, missed the deadline. (Was looking up info as I typed this and watched The Simpsons... good Technical Issues posts take research, after all.)

Not so much as the Ring or Jewel chest options makes any character look like an Iron Man knockoff, or the Spider option makes for fake Spiderman knockoffs, or any pale blue skin/pale blue tights option makes for a "Dr. Manhattan", or any cape option leads to a DC character. Then again, if these did individually make copy-cats that were worth suing over, I don't think NCSoft would have allowed the options to begin with.

I bought prepurchase to play Dual Pistols early, but I'm also going to buy Complete Collection for a different reason: my internet connection is 200Kbps (rural town) with a "Fair Access Policy", and downloading Issue 17 made my ISP charge me $95.00 when I was downloading it in April on top of the regular $60 monthly fee.
Even at $40.00, Complete Collection's DVD's are cheaper for me than to download against my town's access limits. Plus, I can hang on to the key so if a friend is interested, they can play City of Heroes free for a month. Go Team Venture! -
Quote:Read my mind precisely, I was thinking my home state would be perfect, although this year due to the proximity of Comicon to Gen Con Indy it would be hard on the OCR team to pull off two major cons in the same month (and that as an exhibitor, signing on for Gen Con Indy three months before the event requires ritual sacrifice or a very forgiving event staff) I think it won't be possible until 2011 to consider it.Have to agree. I'm in CA (and excited for Comic Con more now that CoH will have a bigger presence there than last year, it seems), but originally from the Midwest. I recommend hitting Indy for GenCon, since the Chicago Comic Expo is already over. Unless there's another comic or sci-fi expo in he Midwest of which I'm not aware?
I think one event in the midwest should cap off the year quite well. Gen Con Indy has around 30K attendees, but there's got to be something else near that volume.
That, or give Canada some love. -
Grats on year six!
I think I can do the Wed. MS Raids/Storm Palace... my work gets in the way of everything else. -
I'm touring the scene. Still on CoH (forgot to turn off 3 mo. auto pay back in March, so I'm on until June, then GR is imminent), but trying other things.
Most recently, I broke out of my GuildWars slump, got two characters to 20 finally. (After 8 months of reeeaaally casual soloing.) Gorgeous throughout, loved post-searing Ascalon the most... not a lot of ruined empires that you play in from beginning to apocalypse in titles (until Cataclysm I guess.) Can't wait to try GW2 from the videos I've seen.
Tried Star Trek Online in March. I love space combat, especially when you leave Klingon space and you need to start paying attention and not hit "fire all weapons" repeatedly, but ground really sucks, about as enjoyable as washing dishes. Got up to Lt. Commander before I stopped... I don't see a lot of people happy with the game, and I can see how unfinished it is without getting to RA. Maybe I'll resub later.
Next week, I'll give DDO a try... One GB is a lot to ask of Mobile Broadband, but the same goes with Issue 17's prepatching. (Of course, after enjoying anniversary in CoH.)

Quote:I'd agree. There are badges elsewhere in the game that have the stipulation of "If you weren't there, you can't have it." (Passport.) This is nothing egregious.Disagreed here. It's nice to have something to distinguish my 5 year old characters from the ones just made last week. I like having the anniversary badges as something you had to be there to get. Also don't mind logging my whole stable in once per year; I need to do that to get them their day job badge too anyway now.
There's plenty of badges that represent how long the player has been in the game. All the veteran badges for instance show you were there for those years as a player. But characters who have been around and active for years on end deserve to be special by having the anniversary badges.
Signing in all of my characters across the servers is a little annoying, but I can manage it in less than an hour for 23 toons. -
I live in America and have a hard time asking for NCSoft time cards. None of the stores around me stock them (Inland Empire area, east of LA). One clerk at a Gamestop rolled his eyes and tell me condescendingly that NCSoft just recently announced that they accept Visa cards and I should ask my bank for one. Then they proceed to yell at me as I walk out that Banks are buildings that have money in them.
Getting blank stares from a clerk isn't the worst response. Jerks are everywhere. -
Looks like you're running on 197.16, I've installed Driver Version 195.81 for my friend's laptop (ASUS G72, exact same specs as yours) since the NVidia advisory came out about new versions of the driver causing overheat problems... Anyhoo, give that driver a spin, and see if it works better.
Edit: Also, there is a BIOS issue identified with that particular laptop, where the gameplay FPS on most titles drops to 1-2 FPS on it's RTM BIOS. Read more about it here: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10278100-1.html If you've never used ASUS Live Update to flash your BIOS at least once after buying it, you should do so. -
Fully aware that asking this may mean thrown objects and groans, but I'll do it anyway... TW was shut off from inactive accounts occupying the member list until no one new and active could join, hence the birth of TW2.0 (and subsequently, 2.1).
If this command could prune the old accounts from our first channel's logs, does this mean we can get TW 1.0 back? -
I would but I can't get into the Test Server. Dev fail!
...
...
Gotcha!... I made it into test finally.Plenty of love for devs.
"Oh, my..." -

I might actually care to play a Defender past Issue 17.
Blaster mentality makes it hard to play a Defender who enjoys dying on teams, but most of that is really my own fault. (That being said, my Defender has gone from Level 1-33 in 2 and a half years.)
...Okay, I'm fooling no one, all of it is my fault. -
Quote:Paragon Studios I'd imagine have done all they can for now ("Touching Base" with the shop owner, owner may need to prove his idea was first/genuinely original or not, Cease & Desist being served in person, whathaveyou...) NCSoft homebase in Korea, on the other hand, may take some time in their reaction, but most definetly would involve a lawsuit if they find the shopkeep to be liable.I am honestly surprised the stores still are up given that it's been a day or two since the rednames were shown the knockoffs. In my experience the typical response is to check it out and pretty much instantly report the violation via phone, e-mail and registered mail to the offending site and in cases like this, the offending site to vanish within hours. Apparently somewhere in the chain someone is moving slowly, likely NCSoft if they're bringing their legal guns around for one across the bow. Also given that this guy is illegally making money off a character owned by a television show, you might also see a second one across the bow from them, assuming someone also reports this to the fine folks making BBT.

Yeah, there's a thread already for that.

Summary:
-- T-Shirts available online, but not authorized by NC/ParStu.
-- No idea if endorsed or paid placement or what.
-- Not the first time: past episodes in the comic store has City of Heroes swag as well. -
FW, awesome work... Now another two weeks of tinkering with my UI!
(I actually enjoy such things... not meant to be a complaint at all.)

Quote:Yeesh! Two days left on fixing the client post download for new sound? Did John Williams rescore the whole soundtrack? After 8 hours of leaving it run, this is what I'm looking at now.
I can't get into test at all myself. Freezes upon opening the Updater. My live game works, so I'm not going to pry any further... if it works two days from now, I'll try again. If not, I'll see it all once it's live. -
My launcher keeps freezing, either that, or there's really 1193046:28:02 Remaining on my download of Training Room.

Quote:Yeah, "It's different, 'coz I said it's different..." That's worked out so well for Vanilla Ice and The Verve.I love his response to beign told he's stolen the design:
"This design was not inspired by NCSoft's City of Heroes. Any similarity is coincidental, and the designs are significantly different. I made no reference to City of Heroes when designing this shirt. My inspiration came from elsewhere."
Yeah, from a BBT character who is wearing the design you ripped off from NCSoft, you idiot. So his defense is "I didn't steal it from you I stole it from someone else," without knowing that someone-else was using the exact thing he's being accused of ripping off.
SO yeah, Come on NCSoft, this fellow really needs to be slapped down HARD.
Honestly, I don't think Paragon Studios would go after them... money spent on lawsuits is money not spent on their core business. But NCSoft is a whole different jar of pickles. -
Quote:In Vista and Win7, your laptop PC's performance is controlled by the Power Profile. If left to initial settings, Balanced mode will let the CPU choose how much fan speed/GHz to deliver. Sometimes, the PC doesn't quite make the switch fast enough and the processor gets hotter than it can handle. You can set it to full use (CPU/GFX at full, all fans on) by selecting "High Performance". (You'll need to be plugged into the wall for this to be effective.)HP HDX X18T-1200 CTO Premium Notebook PC
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8800 @ 2.66 GHz
Windows Vista 64-Bit
NVidia GeForce GT 130M
4.00 GB RAM
Hopefully that's enough spec info. As the title says, this laptop overheats while running CoX. Usually the process is I'll open the CoH Updater program, run the game, log in to a character, and run around in-game for about 1-5 minutes. This is when my laptop shuts off completely. It ceases all operations and the display goes black instantly. I've been told this is a safety feature with some laptops when they begin to overheat, so that there is no permanent hardware damage.
My question is why this only happens when running CoX, and if there are any solutions for this problem?
Other pertinent information to consider: I've already tried using a laptop cooler, 2,500 rpm dual fans, and they make not one bit of difference. I've tried using the fans in combination with cooler surfaces and environments, and again this has no effect on the problem. What's more interesting is I can run programs with much higher video, memory, and processing requirements than CoX and they run fine. CoX is the only program that overheats this laptop. And yes, I've tried running it in safe mode and it's still no use. I appreciate any help out there.
Open the Control Panel, and choose Power. (If you're in category view, cllick "System and Security", then click "Power Options"... I might be wrong on the titles, look around a little.) Change the plan to High Performance and click OK. You may also do this in the notification tray: Look for an icon with a battery. (If plugged in, you'll see a tiny plug in front of the battery.)
There is no way to set this to come up automatically, you'll need to select this every time you log in: Balanced is always default.
Try it again with High Performance on, see if it makes a difference. -

City of Henchmen?! I SO want to be Henchmen #24!
(What costume options are available for a postmortem skull?)
