Quote:As was said in Predator by the Body's character, "I ain't got time to bid creep." Or something along those lines.True.
I think the other thing that leaps out at me, is the evident fact that most
folks haven't figured out the idea of bid-creeping...
I guess that's not too surprising, but given the millions I've saved using that
simple idea, I'm not sure why it isn't more prevalent. <shrug>
Oh well, it's their play money... actually, it's now *your* play money...

It made re-reading the thread much more entertaining.

Quote:Is that 5 NCSoft accounts or 5 CoH accounts on one NCSoft account? You know that annoying rule about only allowing a certain number of accounts on one credit card? Do you remember me talking about dual-boxing and my husband triple-boxing?
5 accounts is, apparently, too many for a decent person to have for any reason. I can't pay by credit card ever again. I can't say more than that on the official forums without getting modsmacked for really foul language. Needless to say <bleeped growls and general anger>.
I am up to 3 so I guess I better know. -
Quote:Stop being so logical. This is a test, right? I mean, if he stops listening to the players and does whatever he thinks he's right, there's someone already waiting to complain that he listened to you, right?
I'm on to this game.
This why I keep telling Castle that what he should do is take his priorities from the lead designer, allocate resources and schedule time with the producers, listen to feedback from the players, discuss the plan with the powers team, and then just do whatever I say. Its simple, and its consistent.

I am completely biased in favor of flying so believe me when I write the following:
Fly is the safest, easiest and slowest travel power.
Superjump is faster and you can land in trouble but you can control your movement while in the air similar to fly.
Superspeed is fastest in a fashion but completely on the ground so getting up in some zones it is not efficient.
Teleport is technically the fastest but a total endurance hog until/unless well slotted to reduce endurance. Plus some people have trouble with the temporary hovering in it not being long enough and plummet to their deaths.
Anyone can get any of the travel powers. At level 6 you can start choosing pool powers instead of just your primary and secondary powersets. In order to obtain a travel power you need to choose a pre-requisite power from the same pool. In the case of fly that would be Hover or Air Superiority (a melee attack which I would recommend over hover).
At level 14 or higher if you have the pre-req power you can take the travel power.
There are temporary versions of fly and superjump available in the game. You can get fly at level 1 with the temp power we just got for the jetpack. You would need the salvage and influence to craft it. There is also at levels 5-9/10 you run radio missions in Kings Row and after 3 of them your detective will offer you the Atlas Park safeguard which will reward you with the temp power jetpack.
At level 10 it is a 50/50 chance for Atlas Park or Kings' Row safeguard. Levels 11-14 it is Kings' Row and Kings Row has the Superjump pack temp power.
There are 2 other temp fly powers. One is purchased with real money at $5/month and the other costs 40,000 influence in the Shadow Shard.
So you have a ton of fly options without even taking the power.

There are so many times I want to reply to you with your signature image.

Quote:Oh like you're the foremost expert... =PJust FYI for people. I'm sending the original poster private messages and interrogating him so I can steal his secret knowledge -- I mean find his personal playstyle. I think I'll be able to get him some information to help him kick some booty and I'll ask here if I think one of you might be better at answering something specific than I
Also... wow... I need to write some guides for that site! -
Quote:You just go to the hospital or choose to go to your supergroup base if it has a med (forgetting the name now). Except for a couple enemy maps where you get beamed into jail cells and have to bust out.Oh yes this is true...The dreaded corpse run..It is not missed..Do you lose anything when you do die, or just go to the hospital?
We do get debt which is negligible beginning at level 10. It gets paid off at a 50/50 rate by taking 50% of your earned experience and paying off debt with it but patrol xp absorbs it and removes it while you are logged out.
Now 6 years ago my blaster was in almost a complete state of perma debt. That was bad. There was no patrol xp, debt cap was much higher, started at level 5. Now I barely notice the debt and if I do have any when I logout it is gone when I log back in thanks to patrol xp. -
Quote:You know what won me over day 1 all those years ago? No corpse runs. I had grown to hate that in EverQuest. Not having to loot dropped enemies was #2.Lol Newby is friendlier...
Okay no addons...nice... This means I dont have to worry about another player having a leg up on me due to just having a better UI/addons... Already enjoying this game...
I would like to add that the Ultra Settings are awesome, and the game has a real comic feel to it... I also love the idea of not having to LOOT everything I kill..Nice change of MMO pace.....
Once again thanks for all the help, I will be purchasing the full game tonight once I get home and put the kids to bed...Looking forward to it...You guys made my decision easier... -
To be fair, they clearly expected us to use email as storage but never told us it would expire so the two are different. If not they wouldn't have the purge in place only for storing our own emails to ourselves.

I seem to recall the last one coming along as a surprise. They had mentioned that the next booster pack would come out between I17 and GR/I18 so it could happen at any time.

Quote:This made me think that perhaps they could change it to you had your fortune read. I am sure someone can probably come up with a better way to phrase it.
I could actually support a self-buff...but it seems to thematically clash with having your fortune told by someone else.
I like getting the fortune cast on me. -
Almost all activity is done via instances from contacts though you can fight "in the wild" so to speak.
A group is usually formed either by /sea (search) command to find people looking for teams and sending them a tell asking them if they want to join or by sending the invite. This can lead to some ruffled feathers either way so go with what you think is best. I would recommend a tell and wait for the answer but some people just want to get going.
If you do send a tell a short polite message is best "We are doing missions. Want to join?"
The great thing now is the team members get set to the same level as the mission or the team leader if no mission is set.
Level cap is 50 but mostly irrelevant since there's not much that just starts there. It all is pretty well going from level 1 on.
You can level to 50 and have a blast completely solo if you want to. I often do. -

Quote:Look the guide based on it's own description is utter garbage. That has been point by point shown.I notice that all of you guys responding are long-tine CoH veterans. I certainly respect your knowledge of the game, but I wonder if you really grasp my perspective on the game.
As I mentioned, though I've been playing for a few years (since March 2007, off and on), I'm only on a few days a month at best. I've missed whole months a couple of times, even when paying for the account. In that time I've started a couple of templates from the forum, but each time they wound up obsolete before I got halfway through -- I've only been able to grow toons quickly by having higher-level players get together and power-level me.
So if there is a streamlined guide of where to go and what to do from 1-50 to efficiently grow a toon up, especially solo, that would be very helpful to me. I might actually get a second character to level 50 someday.
Making Inf on the market is one of the least interesting points. Being offline for weeks at a time or longer allows lots of bids to come in, so I do pretty well on that front for the time invested. Too bad Inf can't buy XP... but at least I can buy a purple once in awhile.
As mentioned, I've tried following templates from the forum here, and not had great results. If there is a guide that actually pairs templates with tailored rapid-leveling tactics, I would consider that worth money. And I have looked -- people have not been putting that much work in for nothing.
The rest of the bullet points do suggest material that is available on the Wiki, and which may not be of any practical use. Presentation could make a difference, though.
All of which is why I'm looking for someone who has actually seen the guide to clarify it's contents.
There are hundreds if not thousands of possible powerset combinations so what is best to solo one is not best for another.
If you can only level getting power leveled you are gimping yourself to only being able to be leveled when being powerleveled.
Here is how to make influence on the market with a new character soloing:
Path 1: Kill hellions level 4+ until they drop a luck charm. Go to Wentworths'. List for 1. Collect 30-50k. Rinse, wash, repeat.
Path 2: Go to Architecht Entertainment. Ask the forum on the Mission Architecht for a lowbie friendly arc. Play the arc. At levels 7 - 10 roll bronze recipes or common arcane salvage lowest level. Take all luck charms to Wentworths' and list for 1. Collect 30-50k each. If bronze rolls get you a Knockback Protection or Steadfast: +Def, go to market and collect 5-50M depending on market's current unfilled highest bid. -
Welcome to the game and forums.
A good website to link is paragonwiki.com which has links to other useful resources.
Also be aware of the Guides forum below.
Questions on this forum get answered fairly quickly.
I am not sure what you are asking about worrying about PUGs. If you mean getting on one it is easiest on Virtue and Freedom but there are global chat channels on the other servers however since you are on a trial you will be experiencing unique challenges in that regard because you will be unable to send tells, reply to tells or use broadcast. The best thing you can do is set your looking for team prompt that you are on a trial and looking.
If you are wondering about the quality of PUGs, well the game is pretty easy so it is hard to get on a complete disaster but it can happen.
If PvP is your interest you will want to play on Freedom however since you are on a trial you will only be able to use the arenas. The PvP zones begin at level 15.
We have a major new expansion coming soon: Going Rogue. There's a lot of waiting for that going on. -
About the author of the guide:
Quote:He soloed three whole separate characters to level 50!(name) is a mostly unpublished writer from the abyss known as Detroit, Michigan. He is the world's foremost expert in the Dark Melee/Dark Armor Scrappers in the City of Heroes MMORPG, soloing three separate characters to level 50. Prior to CoH, he has achieved much success in Asheron's Call I & II, as well as thorough exposure to many other MMORPGs. He is an IT professional during the week and a fantasy football fanatic on the weekends, with all free time devoted to his wife and son.
Let's see I have mostly soloed to 50:
Inv/SS Tanker
Peacebringer
Fire/Psi Dominator (after the changes to Psi)
Energy Melee/Energy Aura Stalker (after the changes to EM)
Fire Melee/Fire Aura Brute
Spines/Fire Aura Scrapper
Arachnos Soldier (Crab)
Grav/Rad Controller
Dark Melee/Inv Scrapper
Warshade
Robotics/FF Mastermind
Fire/Fire Blaster
And I duoed to 50:
Ill/Storm Controller
My widow (fort) is currently 44 and the night widow is 35.
Of course I would never claim to be the foremost expert in any of them.
[edit] Darn you, Dumple! Going back and adding the about the author! -
Quote:Actually they prove they aren't worth buying withOMG, this makes the game sound HARD. WOW.
"...influence not that easy to come by..." What a joke.

And not one mention of inventions? -

Quote:Point by point commentary on their claims:I do check the Wiki when I need to know something specific. As you can see from my post count here, though, I am not so inclined to ask questions (I Google and search these forums often, but don't like to bother people -- especially when I'm looking for general information about the game).
The nature of the strategy guide I am asking about is supposedly different from a straightforward manual (like the Wiki, which answers straightforward questions such as where to go to get x badge).
From the bullet points of the advertisement it contains:
* Secret leveling locations from 1 to 50
* How to make more influence than you could ever spend
* Character creation guide for new and advanced players
* The hidden mechanics of the combat system
* Efficient tactics against every type of villain
* Powersets in detail
* Cutting-edge soloing strategies
* How to play a grouped character. Flawless.
They also claim it is updated regularly to keep consistent with current game rules. This is typical of all the MMO guides sold by Killer Guides.
The advertising copy for the guide makes some bold (but very general) claims. I'm just hoping that someone here who has already made the investment can provide a more realistic estimation of it's usefulness.
* There are no secret leveling locations 1-50. There might be exploits but there are no secret locations.
* There are so many guides on how to make influence and infamy in The Guides and Market sections.
* I am sure an advanced player does not need any help creating a character and we have character builders free to use as well as every AT forum has people who can help. For free.
* Hidden mechanics from whom? Again all that kind of info is widely available for free.
* Efficient tactics against every villain? Pop inspirations and stay awake.
* Powersets in detail. See Paragonwiki, Red Tomax's site, Mids, etc.
* Cutting edge soloing strategies? Cutting edge? Soloing is easy.
* How to play a grouped character. Flawless? I wonder what you do when the team fails to allow you to be flawless.
I don't have to buy something to tell from the ads it's not worth buying but why would you accept the blind words of someone on a forum that something is or is not worth buying?
There are people who post here who think Star Trek V was a good movie. -
That would be nice. A contact list would also be good so you don't have to type in their global to mail it each time.
