  2. Hi all.

I did a bit of snooping on the forums and suggestions threads, and it only seems to have come up once or twice from what I could see...but I was wondering if the notion of 'torn' costume parts have ever had much popularity? To illustrate what I mean, here's a picture, done by the master of such, George Perez:

I realise this is heavily detailed and Superman's become a War Hammer/Shield Defence guy, but the essence is there: it's still PG-13, but there's identifiable torn patterns there that show skin.

To the best of my knowledge, only the Blast pattern for legs (which allows for no skin) and the Robes Torn option come anywhere near this. Now this is obviously your 'Battle Damaged' option, but I'm sure people would like to play zombies or mutating monster types that go all Hulkish, so this might be an option too.

I'm just wondering if it's ever had any real support and would people get behind it? I don't think I even saw it in Noble Savage's art thread....

    Revised hypothesis! You're Jack Bauer!

Ack! I don't want my teeth removed or to have cut-rate electric shock therapy! I'll buy the book, I swear!

    I SWEAR!

  4. I thought that was the point of the show....oh wait...it's to see Tom Welling never get decent work in tv again, right?

  5. Ah well. Disadvantages the Aussies too, so....
  6. I checked, it's in my box thanks to it being on my pull list.

  7. 'The Many Deaths of James Howlett?'

But yes, you know you're reaching when the execs go 'hey, we got a sales spike! Quick, do that thing they just did!'

Champions Online decided to overturn that rule and made the penalty for not having range be having other players laugh at you for not taking range. DCUO decided to settle the matter once and for all and made everyone ranged, except your range is often zero.

I expect that when Marvel Universe Online comes out, they will settle the matter by making everyone melee. And have claws, high regeneration, and indestructible skeletons.
I thought the primary design aesthetic there would be to have you angst, turn against your fellow heroes for incomprehensible reasons and make you guest-star in everyone else's missions for no apparent reason.

  9. That was utterly brilliant. I like Fire Blast being described as 'punching things with fire, but missing'.

Yeah, he got Dirigible Corporation's number first up.

My group at the time were some great friends, but none of them had any originality. The core group of villians I had made up to be their archrivals? All original concepts come up by my friend, Paul Baxter, and I while in college.

This was the same group of people who didn't like "Exalted" because they felt the Stunts rule was too much work!
Heh! Yeah, I dunno what happens with some groups after a while...I definitely feel my group's in a bit of a rut and I managed to jar them out of it for a while running Doctor Who, where I got two out of my three players gelling well as a core group, with the third just trapped in some sort of two-dimensional rut.

Whereas I was churning out alien races at a rate of knots...

For a very long time, he has been presented as an unmatchable power that we, the players, must always stay below - and that might be the worst offence of all.

And, of course, there's the association of Statesman the character with Statesman the developer, who is oft-reviled around here. That can't help either. Plus, we keep having more and more Marcus Coles shoved in our faces as great powers, and always as great powers we must "team up" against - as if Marcus Cole is some inviolate pinnacle that can never be matched no matter what we do.

The game would honestly be much better if Statesman and Recluse were just to kill one another, and the player characters forced into the limelight more because their respective factions now have no one else to turn to.
Ah....I came into the game after Mr. Emmert left, so I never could relate to the hatred for him and such. And I take the other tack regarding how Statesman is portrayed to us...yes, he and a few of the other Incarnates are the pinnacle of that ability, but it's interesting to note that how all the other alternate Coles are corrupted by their power and our Cole isn't.

As for their fates, I am wondering if the unfolding Incarnate story won't end with one or perhaps both Recluse and Statesman being killed off...stories involving wars of the gods never tend to end well....

Ah yes...people had problems with Story Points when I ran it a few years back...but I began to wonder if that was just because players don't have enough imagination to use Story Points to their advantage....

  15. It wouldn't be the turning Mr. Powers on, would it?

Also, nice of the artist to reference a Nightwing pose on the page prior...only the greatest team leader in the history of comics, thankyouverymuch....

  16. Even though myself and a couple of other people (we know who we are) have posted with our support for the character of Statesman, I'll simply reiterate my support for those who have posted recently in this thread with the same purpose.

I dunno, maybe we live in a cynical age where the term 'hero' has been largely deconstructed and people think you need to skirt the edge of the law like Chris Nolan's Batman or kill 'just bad people' like tv's Dexter to be deemed a hero. Or maybe people think characters like Statesman are two-dimensional and not 'realistic' enough for their tastes (in a genre which is dealing in pretty much blatant unrealistic situations) and therefore are fair game for mockery or whatever.

I don't take any of the slashfic pairings in this thread too seriously, because they inevitably lose steam or the novelty factor wears off. Heroism, on the other hand...never really goes out of style.

I'll keep backing the big man on that score every day.

  17. I am sorry for any friction what I was told may've caused here. The friend who told me this seemed quite convinced of what they believed was the case, and I do apologise also for any speculation this has caused.

  18. Heh, me too....but it's taking a well-deserved rest along with my 13-year Star Wars campaign which is now down to 'casual' status.

Now my fun is to challenge myself with other games; Doctor Who is a fun one to try, just for the potential variety from session to session....though my baby is my Star Wars game. I never seem to get tired of it.

    S.
  19. I certainly hope that's the case...my friend seemed very very adamant, however. I hope there'll be a clarification on this just to clear the air and prevent any speculation, for which I apologise for in advance.

Heh, of course I did. 'Wormer von Braun'? Heeheeheeheee....I was also waiting for the Wonder Aunt Whole Lotta, but hey....

I am a long long time tv and comic reader. I was into Star Trek and even 'Ape Pagoda' before I was in my teens. I do of course await your Night Court and Manimal references...

Ran an over a decade long campaign of it....and I own nearly every sourcebook and boxed set they made...it'd be nice if they did, but they made that awful reinvention of the game which didn't do so well.

  22. I've heard a rumor from a fellow player that someone jacked the global name for sexyjay and spread these hints? I haven't seen that confirmed anywhere, but it does concern me.

  23. There's only ever been two games in my thirty years of tabletopping that have ever gotten superheroes right, and I'm afraid Champions isn't one of them for me.

The first is the venerable Marvel Super Heroes from the now-defunct TSR (now Wizards of the Coast). One chart that handles everything in the game, and it handles every power level from Aunt May to the Beyonder. All percentile based and it scales beautifully. For pure super-heroey stuff, this is your game.

The second is White Wolf's Aberrant game, which has no connection to the World of Darkness, allows you to put huge amounts of customisation into your powers, and runs off a success-based system. And any game that has advanced rules where you can eventually going around making whole galaxies and lifeforms is pretty cool... Be warned, though...this is a R-rated game with everything that implies. But I've seen DC and Marvel heroes converted over with ease. Give it a look.

    S.
  24. This is all very interesting, but a friend told me that that was perhaps not Jay who said those things, but someone who somehow managed to get ahold of the globalname sexyjay? Can anyone confirm/deny this?

P.S. We're all clear down here for now....though we now have brushfires in the west....so there's a vague calm in the East and South right now. I don't know if it's before the storm, but I sure hope not.
