Concussions can be serious so yeah, you should see someone. Any abrasion or internal bleeding to the brain can lead to swelling. Swelling can push the brain down on the spinal cord and actually crush it.

Yeah the whole Step-thing I can understand. I can see how it would come across as more of an insult based on how that step-father feels about the child. IE: "I'll never think of you as anything but a substitute, you maybe cool but you'll never replace our teacher."

I guess maybe that's why you get so many rebelious children under step parents. Even if their original father/mother left for selfish reasons.
