I'll let the conversation die here - hi mods - but I'll end it with the known fact of how it wasn't long at all after the game went F2P that the 'FOR SALE' sign went up.
-
Quote:Wow. Just.. wow.No, your anecdotal evidence did not beat my anecdotal evidence because those names were free on Virtue for a reason. Really, Glamburgler? I would hardly call that a "snag" and if I did snag that, I wouldn't tell anyone. It's a punny name, but really, I wouldn't be surprised to find it available.
Quote:The others are decent, but I am sure they weren't your first choices. You actually tried Wave for Tide Shifter, and Eagle for Albanian Eagle, and Thunder for Miss Thunderstrike. But all of those were taken, so you had to settle. If there had been a name purge, you might have gotten a couple names on your first try.
And I never went with anything as simple as 'Wave', 'Eagle', and 'Thunder'. Wow. Just... wow. -
You mean the one that has only one server, a (presumably) much lower player character population, and nobody minding the store when Goku and Mr. Incredible are literally running around the Tutorial area?
-
Quote:In the past couple months or so on Virtue, I've snagged Sister Pact, Glamburgler, Tide Shifter, Albanian Eagle, Opposite Force - which I also got on Freedom, and Miss Thunderstrike. My ancedotal evidence just beat your ancedotal evidence. Its all about the creativity. If the name you're looking for is taken, try another one. The sky's the limit, and there's no penalty for being unique. So, it hasn't been discussed and or addressed in a while, and I really think it needs to...
All of the good names are taken. All of them. And by "good names" I mean iconic heroic names that you could see on the cover of a comic. !
(For fellow Virtues, Miss Thunderstrike is currently open and available to a good home.) -
Quote:That made the night right there. Well, that and the over 4000 announcement. Now all we need is art of Tyrant, Mother Mayhem, Neuron, and Anti-Matter in the Family Truckster...
[Admin] Neuron: I managed to find another flaw in Anti-Matter's armor, Emperor. Keyes is wearing it!
[Admin] Anti-Matter: Hey, why don't you make more speed clones, then you can be a hundred times as useless!
[Admin] War Witch: I wonder how we can use this...
[Admin] Emperor Marcus Cole: ENOUGH!
[Admin] Emperor Marcus Cole: Get back on track for this invasion or I'm turning this army around and we're going home! -

You're still going from having the base game at $15/mo to $0/mo. There will still be a significant number of subscribers that will take that option if presented.
-
Quote:What you're missing is that its not a one-way street. You'll also have subscribers who'll see that its not all bad on the gated side and drop their subs to play for free. Even if you strike a balance between the two, you're just treading water. And if your game is still profitable, what sense does it make to risk that profitability? But when you switch to F2P the focus shouldn't be solely on the "subscribers" - all those "free" accounts are potential future subscriptions but are also customers who will continually make repeated microtransactions. When a game is switching to F2P it's not just about the longterm subscribing players - you also have to make the new "free" generation happy - so much so that they will enjoy the game so much that they'll want to upgrade to a subscription to get whatever extra perks come with it.
-
Quote:I've seen F2P succeed in two situations:The real issue is why NCSoft's overall quarterly earnings demand changes in any of their games' payment structures. Compared to some *hem hem* the company is doing quite well as it is.
1.) Pay2win Asian grindfests
2.) Big name IPs that didn't do so well coming out of the gate and needed a shot in the arm
Neither of which fits CoH. F2P evangelists, however, demand their free stuff and so off we go. -
Quote:Crisis on Infinite Cities?- I don't see this splitting the community. I don't see them doing an everquest/everquest2 setup. I see the incarnate story arc gradully becoming a battle to stop the multiverse collapsing in on itself- a product of the barriers between worlds weakening via the Rikti/magic plot point, the Rularuu invasion, and Cole's own invasion. The incarnate fight becomes a battle between factions hoping to shape this new world to their own needs, and we all fight through to that final moment when the merged universe rights itself... all goes white...
... and our heroes and villainsvemerge in this new world-- perhaps not even heroes-- but they're ready to meet the new challenges of the new world. Some may have some memory of what came before... even if just faint echos that come in dreams. Some events will turn out differently this time- some heroes or villains may take very different paths in this new city, and some new heroes will emerge to fill the void.
To be honest, since Ramiel's arc I too have been thinking the Incarnate / Coming Storm story has been leading to the next sequel. It might not even be a reboot, after all, it is a pretty big galaxy out there... -
When I hear of players getting demoted and bounced from SGs for lack of 'progression' or how I have to do 'homework' on how to dance about to succeed in a raid or having to grind for mats to participate in a raid or having an acceptable 'gearscore' to participate in a raid, then any arguments related to a certain other MMORPG have merit.
But I don't, so they don't. The closest is knowing what powers to use in Lambda, and you can pick up on that after your first run. CoH endgame raiding is exactly the kind of casual raiding I want to embrace. -
Quote:Yes and more yes. i20's barely been released and already I'm jonesing for 21 (and 22 and 23...)Some of the things mentioned:
More of the magical origins of Praetoria, along with the Carnival of Light, will be addressed in Issue 21.
They "absolutely" plan on reusing old zones (such as Boomtown) for the new storylines.
Quote:New lore pet trees are coming before Issue 21 (presumably with the new trials), and include:
- Arachnos
Quote:- Carnival of Shadows
Quote:- Nemesis
And if we ever get Knives of Artemis, I'm so rolling Bosley. -
Hooray! I was here to get my Merrymaker and Entertainer badges, took some time off for other things, and I'm more than glad to be back for the 7th! Here's to the best MMORPG of them all!
-
Fly: My costumed superheroes just don't quite seem truly superheroic unless they're flying. My wish list has 'make flight useful for melees' on it.
Hover: Because they should also be flying even when taking on the bad guys. I love hoverblasting. "Up here, *****!"
Energy Torrrent: When I first build my EM/EM many many moons ago, the guide I was using warned me against it. I wound up putting it in when I respec'd her for inherent fitness. Her next mission I discovered just what I was missing. Bowling For Council!
(I owe Samuraiko a Coke.)
Power Thrust: Handy when you need to get a pesky minion far far away. Or when you just feel like sending Skulls flying across Atlas Park.
Rain of Fire, Irradiate, Burn, Fistful of Arrows: There's nothing quite as cathartic than watching mass quantities of orange numbers floating up from targets.
Assassin's Blade: OK, so can one-shotting a lt. or boss.
Assault Rifle in general: Because I too paired it up with a tiny fairy. And just wait for when she picks up Munitions...
Rise of the Phoenix: So I get my very own personal res with heal, damage, and knockback?
The T3 Void Judgement with Knockback: See above, only I don't have to die and I don't get the heal, but who cares? Fire it off right after Follow-Up and Spin and BLAMMO. Bodies, bodies everywhere!
Along that note, and my last one: The T3 Cardiac with 45% End Reduc: Or how one power completely revitalized interest in my Night Widow. -
First time poster here, first time toying with Mids' actually. My F^3 brute is about to ding 50 so I've been working with her build to get her ready for some IO slotting on the cheap. The plan is recharge, recharge, and more recharge, with some added defense to make her a little less squishy if at all possible. If she needs to fill up the pretty blue bar, then its time to find more bodies for Consume to munch on.
This is what I have so far, and Mids' has her +Recharge stuck at 25% for some reason though by my count she should be at 35%. Is there a cap I'm unaware of?

Flamethrower Ferret, first and foremost. A decade on and the idea of a ferret with flame powers still amuses me, even if he's less of a ferret than the original character. I'm also partial to Blade of 1000 Deaths, my Ninja Turtle inspired nin/nin who somehow wound up named in homage to Hong Kong cinema.
I'm still fond of my others, even if they're catchy in my own mind. A lot of the time its a matter of my imagination coming up with the name and the concept builds itself from there:
ChernobylCheerleader
Officer Newton (kinetics, natch)
DeathWishUponAStar
Blood Widow Ricki (with whom I've yet to find anyone who's noted her reference, though I did scare a Cape DJ with visions of Blood Widow Ricki Lake)
The Glamburgler -
Quote:Farming as sprinting your way to a fully slotted 50 in a matter of hours/days? That's bad.I never laid out what I define as farming. But the repeating of the same two trials falls into some definition of it, which was previously looked down upon because of AE.
Is farming the same two task forces constantly really any different than grinding the same two AE maps?
One is dev created, and another is player created.
Farming as gradually leveling your way along while taking in the content? That's good.
Apples and oranges may both be the same by some definition, but there is a difference. Its my impression the devs don't care if you do the same two AE missions over and over as long as you're playing by their pace. That's the difference.
EDIT: Or what Dr. Mechano said. -
If that's your definition of farming, then farming has been officially accepted since 'Go. Hunt. Kill Skuls.' First it was inf, then salvage 'n recipes, now the 51 varieties of incarnate rewards. Same dance, different tunes.

Again: 8-man PUG beat Lambda easily, with a non-softcapped rad^2 defender with nothing more than a T3 alpha tagging along. I'd say we maximized our success pretty well.
-
Quote:Or, you know, you could learn how to maximize your effectiveness in a trial. I ran my non-softcapped defender in an 8-man Lambda PUG yesterday, faceplanted a few times, and we still kicked Marauder to the curb with time to spare. Now I know more going into her next one what and what not to do. I never felt weak. I felt that I could learn how to do more. But I won't call it 'l2p' 'cause it seems I've always found new tricks and tips as I leveled along.*Gear reset. It doesn't matter if you have SO's or IO's you will face plant the same in the trials at some point. Thus you are forced to feel weak, and are supposed to have the temptation to grind the trials to become whole, normal, or strong again.
There is no 'City of Warcraft' doooooooooooooom beyond what you want to see.
