Awesome, Mandu...thanks for the additional help.

    Okay...to answer Hyperstrike:

I have 2.75 GB of RAM.
    Pagefile size: 2.046 GB

My C: drive (where the pagefile is) has about 76.8 GB free.

I installed some type of pagefile monitor so I'll try running it with CoH running and see what it shows.
  3. Frost and Hyperstrike,

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond.

I'll take a look at the dust situation. I have a case that has a large side fan, a fairly large top fan, and two or three fans in the front. It won't hurt to use some compressed air in the case and see if I can clean things up a bit.

Hyper, I'm at work, but from memory, I think I have a bit over 2 GB...or possibly over 3 GB of RAM. I wanted more, but since I'm running XP on my system, I couldn't get much more. With regards to page file, I looked at that today and it's a bit over 2 GB. Should I somehow increase that (I think I do that through Control Panel > System, yes?) Regarding the extra space on my C drive (where I believe the page file is), I can't remember off-hand, but it's not skimpy. I only store my applications there.

I know this isn't much help and when I get home this evening, I'll come back here and report more accurately.

How do I go about finding my RAM? I told you I'm quite computer illiterate.

I've been toying with the idea of biting the bullet and grabbing Vista, but now I'm more inclined to just wait for Windows 7.

This way I can hope to get more RAM.
  4. Hello all,

I'm not sure I'd call this a MAJOR issue, but when I log onto the game, my computer "revs up" and gets rather loud... staying this way the duration of my time on the game. When I log off, the sound resumes to "normal".

I only ask because last night on a team, somebody else mentions that theirs does this as well. I've only noticed this with the advent of Issue 16.

Just wondering if anybody else has noticed a change in the sound of their system. If so, then I don't worry about it too much... perhaps that's just the way it's going to be.

If not, then perhaps I need to have my computer looked at.

    Thanks for any help.

In case it matters, I have a Quad core.

Edit to add: Not too long ago, I got some type of message regarding a lack of virtual memory... and again, it was while I was playing the game. Now that I think about it... this "revving" up symptom coincided with that message.

After that message, I did an error check and defragged... just because that's something I usually do when I get those types of messages. LOL! I'm very computer illiterate.
  5. I really didn't mean to start up some huge debate by asking this question.

I appreciate the links and other information people have shared. Thanks very much!
  6. Thank you again!

Rodion, I like your suggestions and I may take them.

I just wouldn't know what a typical Irishman may say, for example.

So even a source of idioms, slang, dialect, would be appreciated.

Respectfully, I disagree. I've had many students who can read (decode the letters) and comprehend quite efficiently text that is meant for students a couple of grade-levels higher.... but couldn't spell their way out of a paper bag.

It's odd, really. If I write:

    FRENDSHIP FRIENDSHIP FRIENZSHIP PHRENDSHIP

They could circle the second word as the correct spelling in a heartbeat.

Then, moments later, they'd write "I realy like having a frendship with Amy becaus she is nice."

There are just some people who are not good spellers and it has nothing to do with their intelligence level or an inability to read or write (definition of illiterate).

Now, I will agree that some people are lazy spellers, INTENTIONALLY choosing not to spell words correctly, do u no wat i mean? (often just to save time and precious keystrokes)

Howeve, here are a few suggestions for you:

Firstly, if you turn to Rabbi Google and use as your input the specific dialect you are looking for plus the word "dialect" or "Resourse or a combination of the above, you are bound to get significant results. I know there is a Scots Language page. http://www.scotslanguage.com/ And there are bound to be similar resources for Irish, Aussie and a large part of the American local dialects. I saw a handy site or Italian dialects around, as well.

Secondly, there are some general linguistics resources I can suggest which provide a certain amount of phonetic information about a language (if you know how to read these, it's fairly equivalent to putting one's hands on an accent resource) Just reading off of my list of favourites, I can suggest linguistlist.com and the tower of babel at http://starling.rinet.ru/ as well as Ethnologue (which was an invaluable resource for me during my studies) at http://www.ethnologue.com/.

The marked advantage of these sites as compared to layman's knowledge, is that they often also provide syntactic and semantic variations, not merely phonetic ones. Of course, being professional resources, they are much harderto navigate in order to find the specific information you are looking for, as well as significantly more cumbersome to read.
    Hi Genia,

Thanks very much for taking the time to respond. I'll check into those sites!
  9. Hello all,

I figure this was as good as place as any to ask this question.

Sometimes I like to RP somebody with an accent or dialogue (Irish, Southern, French, etc.) but I always find myself wondering how good of a job I'm doing!

I am asking for anybody out there who RPs dialects, do you know of any good online source with examples?

(There are just so many times my Irish hero can say, "****" and hope that I'm conveying that he's Irish. )

Or do you simply listen/watch a lot of movies that have that regional dialect and it just "comes to you" as you RP?

Thanks for any and all tips!

    To topic:

When/If I roleplay, I do my best to understand about what the other person/people is/are talking. (How's that for an over-use of the slash? )

That being said, If somebody is RPing somebody who has poor communication skills and mumbles his/her words, I still try my best to understand... figuring that my character may try his best to understand.

However, if the RPed text is TOO mumbled and I'm struggling TOO hard, then I simply start to ignore it. Not to be rude, but because I'm primarily on here to enjoy myself and spend some time escaping from the "real world" of trying to understand people ALL the time. I may say "((It's hard for me to make out what you're saying in character.))" and if they reply, "((I'm just playing somebody who mumbles a lot.))" then I'd say, "((Ah, okay...))" and subtly stop role-playing with them... (although I'd continue to team with them, provided they are good teammates).

With regards to spelling and grammar on here (or other forums), I try to react the same way. Being a fourth-grade teacher, I admittedly sometimes cringe when I see blatant spelling or grammar errors. Then I realize that I also can be poor at spelling and grammar (especially when it comes to comma usage...that's my bane!) and am a bit more forgiving.

Also, thanks to my profession, I know there are people with disabilities that make it so they CANNOT spell well, or retain knowledge of proper grammar usage. It's when the errors are deliberate and/or a source of laziness ("Why spend all that extra energy to type the two additional letters of 'you' when 'u' works just as well?!") that sometimes rubs me the wrong way.

Other than that, I try to be of the "live-and-let-live" camp.

Edit: Oh...and if I really can't decipher what the author is attempting to say, I simply move on (at least I try to most of the time!), because if it is due to a disability (eg. dyslexia), then publicly calling them on it will most likely NOT help them become a better speller.

Hypothetically, if you put the fire out before it got TOO bad, you wouldn't be an official "Kitten Killer".

    Most definitely.

Aett is the iceberg to the forum's Titanic.

To the OP... I really like your ideas and I encourage you to continue with them. You'll never be able to please everybody all the time... so just be true to yourself and do whatever you do to enjoy the game.

What you're doing isn't hurting anybody... people are just being sour grapes (no offense to Westley!)

So keep at it...and welcome to the forums!
  13. Thank you, Trashcan and Zombie Man... I appreciate it!
  14. Hello all,

I'm not sure if this is a setting I have wrong or perhaps a keyboard problem (on my end).

When I go to hit the semi-colon ( key, instead a slash (/) appears. I then hit backspace, hit the semi-colon again, and it appears normally.

Could this be on my end? It doesn't happen with any other software (ie. Word, Internet Explorer, etc.) but just within the game (when I want to emote).

Just wondering if anybody has suggestions.

    Thanks much!

I believe I heard in Issue 23, there will be two new controller power sets:

White House (thus the WH) and Amazon Tethering (AT).

Not sure how powerful the former will be but the latter is allegedly quite good.
  16. Everybody has given excellent advice.

    Here's my tidbit:

Are you making sure you're turning OFF "Sprint" once you enter combat? I only ask because when I was new, it took me a few weeks to realize that it was having an impact on my endurance usage... and while it doesn't have the same drain as other power toggles (as Demobot mentioned), it does help to remember to turn it OFF once you get up to your targets.

    Just my $0.02.

Thanks, Muon! Yes, I thought that would be the case... but didn't think it hurt to ask! LOL!
  18. A related question...

Is it NOT a good idea to slot ANY of the rad powers for defense debuff? My first instinct is to slot irradiate with it, but perhaps damage is a better choice...

    Your thoughts, please?

this works on a lot of powers, even if you dont totally slot all set Io's. look for cheap peices, and fill in whats lacking. slot a few acc/dmg and then put in an endo redux SO if need be. you can get a lot better values for most of the time cheaper then SO's that way.
Eldagore, thanks for the suggestions! I'll check out some "slow" recipes for Hot Feet when the time comes.
  20. I just rolled a rad/fire and even at level 4, it's a lot of fun! I can't believe the early AOEs I'm getting....but that also makes me nervous.

Any suggestions for slotting the AOEs? I'm thinking 2 end reducer/2 recharge/2 damage.

    Or

    2 end reducers/1 acc/3 damage

I plan on getting stamina and with the 2nd choice above, I'd get Hasten to compensate. In either case, I'm thinking the two end reducers are almost needed so I don't die of exhaustion TOO early.

Later when Hot Feet and/or Burn comes around, I'll reconsider.

Any input (especially regarding endurance usage, recharge, slotting in general) on each AOE (even the toggles) is truly appreciated.

And I want to thank those who have already given input... because this looks to become a real fun build!

    Thanks!
  21. This is great advice... thanks so much to all of you who have contributed!
  22. Hello all,

Thanks to another thread's suggestion, I rolled up a Sonic/Energy Blaster... and I have to say... I am LOVING him... and his soloability.

I have a couple of questions and hope that anybody who has experience with either powerset can help.

    1. Siren's Song... I'm thinking of slotting it: 2 rech/2 acc/2 sleep... is there a different slotting I should consider?

    2. Conserve Energy... I like the power, but realize the recharge is painfully slow, so of course, I'll slot it 3 recharge. I'm just wondering... is the power, along with possibly slotting my powers with one endurance reducer each... able to have me skip stamina? Or should I not even consider skipping stamina if I want my guy to last the long run?

    Thanks for any advice!

  24. Hello all,

I'm wondering... if I form a coalition between my SG and another SG, I know they have access to my base and/or use the teleporters and I'm fine with that!

I'm wondering if they have access to my storage (ie. enhancements, salvage, etc.) and if so, is there a permission I can set that they DO NOT have access to it?

Thanks so much for any help!

Haha, this is very true! Hadn't thought about that.
