Quote:I'd agree...provided we didn't already have SoAs. Being able to be a member/soldier of one of the more canon-entrenched organizations on one side but not the other is a wonky imbalance that shouldn't exists, IMO...I'd ask for something I've never even seen before because for me, anything else would not be Epic. Especially not if I've already kicked its butt several times over on both Red and Blue sides.
Now, if we were to have still more Epics in addition to Longbow/Villainous Khelds, great, but I like for things to be in sync first -
Quote:Very true, but for completeness' sake I do wish another completely different Epic AT was availaible on each side to compliment what's already there. On the Red Side, it's easy: Khelds should be available as villains. I've run into too many Nova and Dwarf bosses trying to slap my hero down to believe that all Khelds are good guysOh, and wanting a different unlocked AT doesn't make sense: the devs can NEVER satisfy everyone with an AT (some people love Defenders, I don't, etc.). VEATs are popular, but not everyone likes them. Does that mean the devs need to make another VEAT? No. It just means you go with one of the other many AT options, heroside or blueside. Just because an AT is unlocked at 50 doesn't mean it's going to suddenly be liked by everyone.
For Blueside: Longbow should be available as a near Mirror Image of the SoAs. Somewhat different powersets and looks (can't have those Arachnos backpacks, now can we...) but basically starting off very soldiery (guns, weapons, and such) before diverting into niche areas. Many people don't like how Longbow uniforms look... Well, other the the red and white colorations, they can actually look pretty cool. Like SoAs, you can be stuck with a uniform at first, but can color it as you see fit.
Vanguard can't really be a new AT at this point. Everyone can already join them and get their uniforms. Vanguard NPCs do have some nifty powers/looks that aren't available to PCs however, so some Epic Pools (perhaps requiring vanguard merits) that emulate these would be cool. -
I find myself agreeing with DocBuzzard that 'fun' really shouldn't be used when comparing ATs and Builds. Apparently, many people in the past found 'man-builds' fun - that doesn't mean they're as effective as other builds are in best doing what this game entails: defeating enemies and completing missions. I'm not saying that fun doesn't matter, but it is entirely subjective. I don't play Masterminds, even though they can beat GMs, because they don't seem fun to me. But it's quite easy to see they're an extremely effective AT when it comes to what this game requires. I also don't find Tri-Form 'dancing' Khelds fun either *shrug*
Do Khelds defeat enemies and help complete missions (or help do so) as efficiently as other ATs, either solo or on teams? I don't really know, but that is something that could be quantified. -
I've noted that a lot of those on the Khelds-aren't-Fail side of this debate play High End Warshades. What if PBs were the only Khelds? What would your argument on this thread be then?
Note: my main is a Human Only PB. I've never played a Warshade past lvl 14, but I hear over and over how Warshades are much better at high levels. So...flip it? If PBs were the only HEAT, are they 'Fail' then? -
1) Will lvl 50 toons be upgradeable? And if so, how? Universal Enhancements? More Normal Slots to fill out powers?
2) End Game Content: will there be be things that 50's can do beyond repeating TFs, Raids, Flashbacks, and Repeatable Missions? (besides AE)

Quote:Very true, LX. Additionally, when one seriously talks about Evolution, one must always at least try to see things from the Gene's 'Point of View'. In your example, the trait of 'Willingness to Surrender Will to the Strong Leader and be part of His Group' is, from the Gene's viewpoint, a very good strategy for ITS (not the groups) survival. A Gene's likelihood of of passing along its 'stuff' goes way down if its parent organism is all alone and gets killed and eatenVery true, however, and this is a HUGE For a group to function as a group, the individual group members must surrender their free will in certain situation and act as one under the leadership of the pack leader.

Quote:I tend to agree with you and have argued such. I don't think the current playstyle of Khelds was the original Dev intent and design at all.I agree that these are the results of Kheldian design, but I am not convinced (and indeed, I probably cannot be convinced) that the people who designed Kheldians did so with this result in mind. When the same result could be achieved by accident, and the preponderance of the evidence suggests that the developers at the time did not have the necessary knowledge to deliberately accomplish these results, good old Occam's razor leads me to believe that the accident is the more likely explanation.
One thing I am quite certain of: the current dev team would never create powers like Eclipse, Gravitic Emanation, Gravity Well, or Dark Extraction. On the other hand, they'd also never create powers like Ebon Eye, Gravimetric Snare, or Essence Drain. Take that as you will.
However, they've had plenty of time and oppurtunity to change things if they so desired, and while they have changed many things about Khelds, the base AT structure has remained intact, despite how the playstyle it allowd has deviated from the original vision.
Ergo, current Kheld Design IS the design the Devs want. -
Quote:It was Herbert Spencer who originally coined the phrase 'Survival of the Fittest', and I think it's safe to say he meant it in a fairly racist way. However, as history does to things, the context of the phrase has shifted, and most people these days think it applies to Evolution in general (and honestly they're not entirely incorrect), and many even attribute the statement to Darwin himself.Words cannot be racist, they can however be used in a racist way and I don't think anyone in this thread has meant anything in a racist way.
Bottom Line: You are right. One is not a racist just for saying it, despite its origins, because most don't know that. -
Quote:While saying 'Survival of the Fittest' is a bit outdated and colloquial, I fail to see how the statement is automatically racist. Certainly, Herbert Spencer touted it when he mouthed off his Social Darwinism BS, but everyone who uses the phrase isn't automatically thinking only of Human Races. When it comes to Genes and Evolution as a whole, the phrase isn't completely out of whack...My problem with people continuing to say it, is that it's a racist thing to say. I wouldn't get away with saying the n-word for black people and then when people came to me angry get away with it by saying "woah, let's not get bogged down by semantics".
For all those reading: stop saying it. It's a racist thing to say, and offensive to anyone who does understand what you're saying.
Lets be honest. Genes don't play nice and they are NOT anybody's friend. Their goal is to pass along their genetic material (ie. Survive) in the most efficient way (ie. Fittest) possible and they do not care what else lives or dies while they go about it.
(aside: sorry for the Gene Personification, but such is sometimes necessary to get points across. Genes do not actively think and plan this way. Rather, they're very deterministic and mechanical... or so they seem muahahaha)
Nature, in many ways, exhibits this property of genes in an emergent sort of way. Nature in general is not nice. Go take a picnic in the Serengeti if you think otherwise -
On the evolution side topic that's started, let's don't get bogged down in semantics.
Yes, there is Cooperation in Nature, but that doesn't mean it can't also be a part of Competition. The Genes of any organism strive to survive, yet there are not enough resources around for all of them to, thus competition. The Gene wants to survive and reproduce however it can, and doesn't give a Rat's Behind about the Genes of others. As Richard Dawkins says, they're pretty darn Selfish [sic].
Cooperation can be seen as another tool to aid the Gene in surviving. Gene Strategies: "Big Strong Muscles will help me survive and pass on MY Genetic Material, but so also does hanging out and working with these other Guys."
Analogy: A real Glory Hound Football Player wants to win the Heisman Trophy. What's the best strategy? Making oneself really strong and going it alone, or teaming up with a bunch of other really good players? The latter is the answer, but either way, there's competition involved. Which ever way the Gene goes, rest assured that ITS Goal is to Insure ITS Genetic material survives, even at the expense of the others.
Kinds stark, but that's Genes for ya. Fortunately, I don't believe Genes are the only guiding force out there, 'specially for us Humans. Nevertheless, those greedy little bahstads will do pretty much anything to survive, and they don't really care what our higher level hopes and dreams are, so be wary -
Quote:Funny, my PB is probably close to your in playtime and Purple Sets, but I'm not a min-maxer haha (save that I do prefer sets that give recharge bonuses). Rather, I'm more of a collector, or chroming my car, or pimping out... all that vernacular. My attitude is "What else is out there to get that I don't have?". Don't have this accolade? Go get it! That's sorta how I've been viewing Purple Sets, almost like they're badges. In fact, it's bugging me that I respecced out of Pulsar months ago, and yet I know I could slot the 'Absolute Amazement' Purple set in it... Yet I really don't like Pulsar... but I really want another Purple Set....hahaI am definately a min/maxer and there is no way I would have put 1000 hours and 6 purple sets into a toon if I felt that it wasn't performing as well as another toon would have.
I'm know I have pretty good numbers now with my PB if I bothered to calculate them all, simply because I've collected some awesome sets. But a true min-maxer would be interested in things like soft-capping Defense, and that I'm not... Perfect Efficiency takes backseat to just having stuff and having the powers/concepts that I want... -
My how Kheld threads can turn into Sh!tstorms.
My stance on Kheld design: it could have been better, especially shapeshifting. I agree with some that the Shapeshifting mechanics feels clunky (If they don't to you, fine, but they do to me). Losing access to so many powers when shifted, Slot Starvation, looking to Macros and Binds to make Shifting more smooth... Were I the boss I'd have sent the designer back to the design table.
The Shapeshifting is one of reasons that I, like BZB, prefer Human-only (I also don't like the way the forms look, but that's a whole 'nuther issue).
That said, my PB is, by far, my favorite and most played AT, and I've IOd and Accoladed her to the gills. Luckily, Khelds are diverse enough that I can find the template I want to play and leave off what I find unfun and/or badly designed. -
Quote:Yes, Khelds would have to receive some inate buffage to compensate for the losses they normally get from teammates. Personally, I think increasing their Human Damage Scalars to 1.0 (for both melee and ranged, as opposed to the 0.85 and 0.80 they have now...I think), upping the Resisistance of their Shields to 10% or 15% greater than what it is now when maxxed, plus giving them Mez. Protection of around Mag 2 to compensate for losing Controller bonuses would be about right. They wouldn't be as powerful as they currently are when on a 8-man team, but they buffing the team, so the contribution is there, and moreso they also wouldn't struggle when soloing or on small teams as much either.Nevermind, as I'm typing this, I realize the problem. Your suggestion makes a Kheldian buff players, but would leave the Kheldians significantly nerfed. No one wants that, so you say to buff the Keheldian to compensate. What that's doing is throwing the already powerful Kheldians way over current performance.
Forms would, of course, get a comparable increase.
I don't think most people consider Khelds overpowered at the moment (well, PBs anyway) so this wouldn't add to that. In fact, Khelds who are used to being on large teams alot would feel like they've been Nerfed. Those that Solo or play on smaller teams alot would feel buffed. I still think it'd even out, but best of all, the teams that Khelds on would certainly feel buffed, and appreciate and welcome the Kheld's presence more. IMHO, of course -
Quote:The inherent works...just not the way I want it to hahaAh, well, sorry if I took it too far. You did suggest flipping the inherent, which suggests it doesn't work as is, though.
People have a lot of weird anti-kheld bias built up over the years that I usually try to argue against, and the inherent is one of them...
I'll admit that I love pretty much everything about my PB, but I do wish I had a different inherent, preferably one that didn't make soloing more difficult (which I do alot) and also that makes teammates smile when I join their team. Flipping the inherent (and then giving Khelds base stats a small buff to make up for the bonuses they're losing to make up for it) would exactly fit my bill -
Quote:Each AT would only get a single bonus, the same they normally give to a Kheld; they wouldn't get the entire bonus the Kheld normally gets from all teammates. ex: A Scrapper would get a 10% Resistance bonus for teaming with a PB (and nothing else) no matter how many others were on the team.Oh yeah, that sounds balanced. Instead of giving one buff per teammate to one player, let's give the same buff to up to seven players.
But yeah, waaaay overpowered, just like overwhelming advantage the boost from powers like the Leadership Pool or the Magic Booster Pack gives teammates.
Seriously, Do you really think a percentage boost thats around the numbers of a small inspiration (and comparable to Assault and Maneuvers) such a game breaker???
Personally, I think it's right in line with powers like Leadership and the VEAT teambuff toggles, and it would have the wonderful property of giving other ATs something tangeable, and thus make Khelds more welcome and sought after...
Quote:But as Grey Pilgrim said, I find that people welcome Khelds already.
Most people welcome Khelds because most people are simply nice and/or don't really care. But as has been said on this thread, though, most people do prefer a teammate that offers a clear contribution to the team, whether DPS, control, etc., as opposed to the general 2nd best at everything Khelds bring.
I'm not a Kheld basher. Remember, the AT I play most of the time by far is a PB. I'm love the AT in general, but there are things that can make it better (on teams and solo), and I've offered one. But there is a perception problem; one that I think is born of truth.
People like the OP don't start the gazillions of thread about HEATS like this for no reason at all...
Awww forget it - what was I thinking. The AT is perfect as is *shakes head* -
Quote:You're taking things you've heard elsewhere (Khelds are leeches, etc) and erroneously applying a kneejerk response to my post. I'm not complaining about the Inherent being a problem, per se. It was a decent concept, but it fails at helping Khelds get on teams. I'm saying a tweaked inherent like my suggestion would make Khelds more desirable as teamates by other ATs.I've never understood this attitude about the Kheldian inherent. I color it this way to show the problem: "How dare that teammate of mine get buffs, making it possible for him to help me and my team out more!"
Seriously, no one whines about buffs making the Tanker more survivable or the Blaster do more damage, so why the Kheldian? The problem is a perception, not so much how they work. Anything that helps the team helps you: the game doesn't portion more xp to the Kheldian on your team because they're suddenly taking or doing more damage. Instead, your team is rolling along, safer and stronger than they would be otherwise.
And there's no need to rejoin with 'My Khelds never has problems finding teams...'. My PB doesn't either. However, I also know that other ATs rarely go out of their way to search out and get a Kheld on a team. We're not as wanted in the same way Tankers, 'Fenders, DPSers are (I'd like to see someone argue otherwise...)
This inherent tweak would, IMO, change that. -
I played a PB from 1 to 50 Human Only the whole way, then I purpled her out and got most of accolades. Most of my play was solo. So, either I'm a glutton for punishment or there's something about the AT I find appealing haha. Maybe a bit of both...
Nowadays, the AT just doesn't have the problems it used to have. The recent buffs, the 3-1 Insp trade making having a BF all the time pretty easy... It's just no longer the exercize in teethpulling many have groaned about over the years.
I'm not a member of the Kheld Fanboi club, though. There are improvements that could be made to make the AT more appealing and more desireable to have on teams. If there was just one thing that could be done that would make the most different, it'd be to flip the inherent.
Instead of the AT getting buffs when teamed with certain ATs, the inherent instead gives those ATs the exact same buff they currently give the Kheld. A PB's new Cosmic Balance: A Tanker teaming with a PB knows he will get a constant 20% damage buff; a Scrapper will get 10% more Resistance; a 'Troller will get a +1 bonus to her control mag... These buffs would instantly make Khelds more welcome on teams. The Kheld's base stats would have to be enhanced to account for the fact that they won't be getting buffed from teammates anymore; they would no longer reach the highs of teaming with 8, but they also wouldn't have the lows when soloing or on smaller teams. Balances out from the Kheld perspective and would make other ATs welcome khelds. Win/Win... -
Quote:Off topic from OP, attempting a response to this...I'm surprised no one has mentioned Peacebringers yet. As someone who has one of these at level 50 (my second level 50, in fact) I think they're the most useless AT in the whole game. Peacebringers don't have much to bring to the table. They have quite weak damage, a weak single heal, KB in just about every AoE attack which makes their team DPS even less feasible and they don't even get mez protection to compensate. Oh, I forgot, they can have an ok offtanking power, though.
To be honest, though, there's absolutely nothing a Scrapper can't do better than a Peacebringer can. DPS? Scrappers win. Survival? Scrappers win in most cases, it can be a close call with a good PB player, though. Buffs? Neither have any, if it's a /SD Scrapper PBs lose by far. Heals? Ok, PBs have one weak ally heal, it has never, ever saved the day for me because usually in teams there are either enough buffs, debuffs, proper heals or competent players going about the PB heal is only good for topping off people after fights.
I'm not saying here I hate PBs, I quite like their unique playing mechanisms, but their weakness sort of hurts the gaming experience for me. What I hate playing about them is the feeling that they're not actually good at anything... You can correct me on this if you want.
While my main is a PB (and love it!) it seems your logic is sound. The contention is that on Blue Teams everything a Scrapper (a generalist) can do another AT can do better. Blaster damage better (in amount and scale), Trollers and Fenders support better, and Tanks tank better. PBs, also being generalist, are also second fiddle to every other ATs niche, and overall they aren't as good as Scrappers. Ergo: PB=Most Useless AT.
Makes some sense...
However, on large teams with the right mix, a PB can outdamage most ATs, Scrapper included. That, coupled with the fact they have a good bit more AoE potential, means a PB can theoretically bring larger amounts of damage to more foes than a Scrapper can. Of course, KB can mess all this up, but if you know what you're doing it can be controlled so it's not too detrimental to the team.
Very often my Human Only PB is one of higher damage dealers on the team, bringing both good Single Target and AoE damage, along with better survability via Shields and Heals. So, the way I see it, on larger teams anyway, Scrappers edge out PBs in the 'uselessness' category, but they're still Mo' Useless than the other ATs
'Course, I'm being a bit tongue-in-cheek. As everyone says, no AT is really useless unless built that way. This game ain't that hard... -
Well, everybody's speculating on what's canon and how difficult the form tech is... Nobody knows for certain how hard it'll be nor whether the Devs will forego Kheld Customization in the name of canon. My bet is it will happen (and if no customization of any kind is allowed for Khelds, I will be very, very, very dissappointed grrr) so how 'bout some more thoughts/hopes on what form of customization we'd like to see?
Since I prefer Human Only, I didn't give much thought into Form Customization, but here's how I'd like to see that happen (trying to keep to things that are at least remotely possible):
I think 'Nova' and 'Dwarf' should remain the alt forms (that really is Canon) but maybe different kinds of Nova/Dwarf. You have your Legacy (current forms) and maybe two alternates.
For Nova, 1) perhaps a sleeker, edgier Nova, maybe with membranous wings in place of the tentacles and 2) a blocky, thicker Nova, with fewer, thicker tentacles, perhaps ending in hooks.
For Dwarf, 1) a leaner armored form, w. Claws appearing more Blade-like, and 2) a Spiky Dwarf form, maybe with a tail like a Stegosaurus.
All of these, or course, colourable as you see fit.
The option to have a non-Nova/Dwarf form might be valid. Is it Canon that the two templates are the only races Khelds ever mass-bonded with? We're talking millenia here...
A form that's sorta between the blasterish Nova and tankish Dwarf could be interesting, but then we're getting into new powers/sets territory, and beyond customization.
And I do hope they do something custom cool with the Secondary Tier-9s look, least for PBs. -
-
Well, I'm gonna resurrect this thread instead of starting a new one... I know there are similiar ones, but very few Kheld specific. I was told 'Not so fast when I first put this thread out there, but now we have I16 and some ideas of the possibilities, so...onward
I think mosts of us are assuming (hoping) that Khelds will get the Customization treatment. So, assuming the Devs haven't already baked all Khelds possibilities up, and just waiting for release, maybe we can 'influence' them to offer customizations we prefer
So, again, specifically, what customization options do you want for Khelds?
For me (speaking for PBs mostly):
1) The obvious; changing Power color. I do think that Peacebringers should be limited to the Bright pallete and Warshades the Dark one, however.
2) Alt. Animations. I want the Alt Superstrength Footstomp Groundstrike animation for PB's Solarflare and the Alt. Martial Arts Tier 9 Eagle's Claw Animation for Incadescent Strike (or something similiarly cool). An Alt, animation for Radiant Strike would be nice, but it's decent as is.
3) The Human Shields: I just don't love the Bubbles (esp. Quantum Shield's luminous eggbeater): a way to minimize the FX, or color them so they're not so obvious would be welcome.
4) Lightform: I have Photon seekers; I'm tired of looking like one. As we know, Khelds eventually can form energy templates of their host's forms. Well, why can't Lightform be of the same translucent appearance as Dwarf and Nova, but be your Human Form's shape? The rationale is the Kheldian is starting to take on the Human Template like it did Dwarf and Nova long ago. Or something similiar. I just hate losing my humanoid shape and turning into a ball of light.
5) the Forms: Tough one here. The forms are so entrenched in the Lore. However, I don't see why color changes (limited by Bright and Dark palettes) would be so bad.
Speak now, folks, give the Devs some ideas -
Funny. Aside, I do want Palin's 'Updo' hairstyle added to CoH as an option - heck, call it 'Palin'
-
Quote:I argued this exact thing post I13. I don't think a 5% actual recharge bonus per EAT (Count SoAs) on the team would be that overpowering. An all-Kheld team would grant each toon a 35% bonus, which is a pretty potent bonus, but really, only half of what Hasten gives (throw in Speed boost and it reaches the sky), and many toons have Set recharge bonuses much larger than this and it doesn't break the game....I think they should either change the bonus (possibly to actual recharge)...
Mercs
Most Khelds play on reg. teams anyway (where it's rare to have more that 2 or 3 EATs on a team) so the typical recharge bonus won't be large at all, but it'll be substantial enough that you'll feel like you're getting something (as opposed to the near joke (-)slow thing we get now).
When I'm on large teams, I like cycling thru the ATs to see who is giving me bonuses. If I scroll across a Kheld teammate I'm like 'heh, thanks for nuthin', brutha' -
I typically play on Virtue, and I haven't noted a lesser headcount (either when looking for teammembers via search, see the crowds in Wents, etc..). The only thing I have noticed is the server bulbs when logging in. For months, both Virtue and Freedom servers were at least yellow during prime playing times. Post=I16, they're often green, just like the rest of the servers.
So, at least for two servers, this does seem to indicate possible lower populations. Even so, as others say, I've yet to see a noticeable decrease in team invites, etc. -
Villainside, the only ATs I *strongly* think need to undergo a Name Change when switching is Corruptors and Dominators. These are the most 'ebil' sounding names and a Hero using them is just weird. Masterminds are close, but doable. Brute and Stalker doesn't sound any more evil than Scrapper does.
SoA are interesting, but we seem them as Widows and Soldiers, which remains basically neutral. Maybe they could become Longbow (but what to do about those backpacks then...). Nah, Longbow should be it's own Epic AT to balance the SoAs.
Heroside, Peacebringers probably should undergo a name change. 'Stormbringer' is copyrighted, isn't it? Warshades should be called Nictus, since that's already in game. Defenders seem sorta heroic, but really you're 'defending' your teamates mostly - bad guys can do that.
