Brute Mu Mastery: Static Discharge vs Ball Lightning. I'm planning a respec. Can someone give some input as to which of these powers is better (IYO), incl. Aesthetics?

Quote:Yeah, Coldstar, Moonbow... These PB's sided with the Councel and you have to fight Coldstar as a mish-end boss. Yeah, they explained what they did as the 'right thing' in light of the bigger picture, but don't the best 'bad guys' do that well...?Considering that more than one of the early storylines for PBs (and WSs too?) involved PB fanatics who had chosen to start working with the Council against Sunstorm and/or Shadowstar for various (misguided?) reasons ... and you have to go out and defeat them ... considering that, it's not that far fetched to have player characters who have "strayed from the path" too into becoming vigilantes or villains themselves.
The bottom line question with these things is ... "What's my motivation?"
That covers a whole lot of grey area, in addition to the starker blacks and whites.
Yes, PBs and WSs need to be able to Go Rogue. There's no valid in-game reason why they shouldn't. Remember, any being that's 'locked' into being good isn't really a good being - more like an robot following it's programming. -

Quote:I've seens hints that others, such as Lady Grey, might also be Incarnates.Lord Recluse and Stateman are the only Incarnates in CoX at the moment. The term Incarnate is I think used to mean 'Of godly origin', since LR and States got their power from the Well of the Furies, which is something to do with the Greek gods.
Perhaps there will be a third one somewhere (Or they may be talking about Tyrant), or it could be a new origin. But I would think for it to be a playable character it would have to be VERY powerful.
As for Peacebringers not being able to 'Go Rogue' because they're so goody-goody, or entrenched with the PPD - I've fought plenty of Bright Novas and White Dwarfs as Baddies in missions, so to hades with that notion...
If they don't allow it, they'll have to come up with a different 'wallbanger' reason than that.
Oh, and I was certainly planning to go rogue with my PB, but now I'm wavering. I might just have her go vigilante... Sheesh...I'm as confused as she is... -
I play a Peacebringer alot, so...I hear you.
Lots of People say KB isn't a problem on teams, and will disagree if someone suggest it be turned to KD.
Those same people then suggest using Walls, Corners, Positioning, Hover, etc. to control your KB...or in other words to use such tactics to turn your KB into ... *gasps* ...Knockdown! O_o
Yeah, other players could be more tolerant, but truthfully, KB pretty much is NEVER beneficial to Large Teams. With practice, you can make KB to be not too burdensome...but actually beneficial to larger teams? Maybe 1% of the time. The other 99%... Unh Uh. -
Quote:Base AT/Builds not appealing to you is one thing, because there's almost certainly one that is amongst all the other options. However, getting a HEAT *is* a reward that all Heroes, of all personality types, get when reaching 50. I'm of the opinion that HEATs should have something to offer all playstyles, not just Leaders of Teams (and I know you don't have be a big leader to play them, but you do suggest that they're at their most optimal when you are...and I think you're right). You would be right if the assumption was that everyone is supposed to enjoy every AT in the game. I pay $15 a month to be able to play CoH/V and yet, most of the character AT's that CoH/V offers, specifically the melee-centric AT's have never appealed to me, and most likely never will. Is that bad design? No, not really. Games designers who work on class-based games must take it for granted that not every player will like every class, so naturally Kheldians may seem a wasted effort as far as some of the player-base is concerned. Heck, VEATs are a wasted effort as far as I'm concerned...
Should all those player personality options be bound together in a Single HEAT, or should there be a second HEAT, One designed to be equally effective soloing or teaming, as a leader or a leiutentant? I think that the one HEAT we have should be the latter, and if not modified in that direction, a second HEAT should be introduced that is. -

Well, the power certainly is awesome - a bit too awesome for a purchasable power IMO, and there's no way this could ever be considered something a 'Normal' superhero can do; no, you can jump so far and run so fast you'd have to use magic, chi, tech, whatever, as justification.
But it is good - I'm considering dropping a travel power on a few characters because this gives travel o' plenty. Several I won't because of the for Aesthetics, the jumping looks rather cool for a Ninja, Catgirl, Spiderman theme. The running animation...Ugh...so that's what 'Real Ultimate Power' looks like. Oh well, for toons of mine that have it, I'll jump most of the time. -
Quote:Was just wondering that... HmmmmWas there ever any official word from the devs, or from Marketing, or whoever that the Ninja Pack is actually the Natural Pack? Or is it possible that the Ninja Pack is simply the Ninja Pack (like the Wedding Pack is the Wedding Pack and the Valkyrie Pack is the Valkyrie Pack), and there will still be a more generic Natural Booster pack forthcoming soon?

Quote:Have you ever been welcomed or invited to a team because you provide KB Mitigation? Have you ever been praised because your awesome KB 'saved' the team by keeping those nasty mobs away? Please provide your evidence to support your claim. I have used Explosive Blast and Energy Torrent quite a few times to help mitigate incoming fire from a second group or an ambush. Claiming otherwise is dishonest at the very least.
(I've got the feeling you're probably going to say yes, and I suspect you'll be referring to a specific test-tube incident as opposed to the whole issue - seems like a pattern for most KB defenders...)
Provide Evidence, eh: my evidence is anecdotal, and it's called Annoyance: mine and many others. Mine because I can't always perfectly control my KB (even though I'm darn good at it). Also Mine because I'm even required to control it. Finally, my Teamates, who just don't want it period...
So how in Hades do you provide numerical evidence for the annoyance factor? No one is saying that KB can't controlled, nor that there isn't isolated moments where it's sorta beneficial. But by and large, it's not welcome on teams. That's the only evidence I have and need. A KBer is welcome on a team if they can control their KB, or in other words, if they don't cause any.
And there's no need to keep bolding 'ME' in posts, as if I'm the only one who feels this way. I've been on too many teams and seen too many threads where KB was brought up to know that isn't true. Start a poll if you don't believe me. Ask this: when teaming with 4 or more, do you generally prefer there be KB Activity, or very little to none? I'd be curious as to those results. If over half say they prefer KB, I'll say you're right and KB is not a problem. -
Quote:You bring this up numerous times, LX, and you may be right. Nevertheless, if its true - its about as borked a reason behind AT design as I've come across. And here's the real problem: I think the Devs meant for Kheldians to be the ones starting teams and leading their teams to victory. Everything in Kheldian design leads me to this conclusion and while Warshades lead the charge by blowing stuff up, leaving scraps for the team to clean up, Peacebringers are more focused on protecting their charges while the team works together to kick butt.
The thing is, a lazy Kheldian is a dead or lonely Kheldian, and a lot of people simply don't like to have to invest that kind of commitment in a class they already spent 50 previous levels of gameplay on another class to unlock!
To use HEATs properly, we all have to be mini-Napoleans or Pattons - Leaders.
I know that some ATs & Builds cator to certain personalities (support, stealthy, thoughtless smashing...) but there's so many choices that you can find what fits your style. But when you get to 50 and get your 'reward' AT, it's only good if your a 'Leader' personality? Bad design... Bad...
I enjoy being on teams, but I don't like forming teams, nor leading teams. Should I have stuck with Scrappers then? -
Quote:We're not talking about just us, though. This is an MMO - we play with other peeps. Now, of you're KBing half of every spawn all over the mapm is the rest of the team having 75% fun like you because of your actions? Is your 25% mitigation helping the team so much that it outweighs any annoyance they feel. A better question, one of personal character: does your 75% fun outweigh any annoyance the rest of the team feels? It's not that simple. To me, I love KB because I find it fun AND useful. If I were to break it down, I'd say...75% fun and 25% mitigation.
Quote:I get your fun is max exp/min, but mine is not.
Quote:Your playstyle does not supersede anyone elses, and vice versa. I am an intelligent player which is why I use Hover on my Energy blaster or why I find corners/walls before I use powers like Shockwave on my Claws Brute.
Quote:Speaking of which, has you ever use SW on a claws brute? That's almost as fun as Power Thrust!
I swear I don't know why these debates continue. With the way the current game is set up, KB annoys teams more than it helps. A player can work to minimize it, but can never stop it completely, and while doing so, effetiveness is lowered (you will lose an attack or two here and there while positioning). How does that help teams? Easy answer - it doesn't. -
It's really simple folks: When teaming, if the Mitigation that KB provides is at least as helpful to the team when measured against any potential disruption or slowdown it causes, then there's no problem. It really is that simple.
Now, is that true? -
Walk power is currently disabled, as most now know - I wants it back Nao!
I do wish most Attack/Defense powers would work while walking - there's something way cool about walking calmly down a hall, casually blasting foes (think Robocop, Terminator, or Clint Eastwood)
Then, other travel powers could detoggle Walk in the same way Toggling On Super Jump/Flight toggles off Combat Jump/Hover. -
Boosting PB Human Damage to VEAT levels: that seems the most likely possibility to help even the playing field. /signed

Quote:Not even close to a valid comparison...I find this to be an opinion (and there is nothing wrong with that) but it seems to be thrown around as a fact rather than an opinion.
If I build a scrapper and massively deviate from the norm of how scrappers are played and built the only poor design is mine. I cannot deviate from the AT masively and then claim the AT is poorly designed.
"IF" Tri-Forming is the design intent I guess my question would be "who exactly is it badly designed for?"
(Although even I will admit the shape shifting could be streamlined and tray switching improved and built into the AT.)
If you build any scrapper with a least a nod towards how it's intended, you won't be shortchanging a couple dozen powers.
Read Closely... A Tri-Forming PB, to be effective, has to omit or scimp-slot most of the 24 other powers in its Primary/Secondary. And you're telling us that's how it's intended to be?
If Tri-Forming is the only non-gimp way to go, why in hades are we given a dumptruck load of other powers that are basically unusable if we, as intended, go Tri-Form?
Please, explain that to me, someone, anyone...
(going to read Billz new thead...) -
It's live (didn't know for certain if all knew that)
I'm walking...I'm walking...!! Sashaying and Strutting!
Way Cool! Only had time to try it with a female, and I noted that I walked considerably faster than a male. We walked side by side to compare. His slowness is pretty drastic...not sure if that's intended but don't think it should be. -
I've got a Human Only PB with 5 complete Purple sets. Do they make her more powerful? Absolutely! Was that extra power worth the time (about 4 months) and Inf (not sure, couple Billion at least)? No, the power alone wasn't. I decided to Purp Out (and Accolade out) because that was the only real challenge left for that toon. I *really* liked playing her, so...why not, eh?
Purpling out is expensive in Time and Money, and if you're not having fun during that time, I'd say it's not worth it. If you like playing a single toon alot though, it certainly is. -
Quote:Thanks, I figured as much...Not really.
Dark Obliteration and Gloom are thick and shadowy (and Gloom has a skull head). Although with some coloring and a bit of imagination you could pretend Dark Obliteration is Napalm (neither really looks like a beam of energy or blast of fire).
You might want to go into the character creator, and try a Darkblast corr or defender. You can play around with the powers and their colors in the creator, and get a feel for what you'll be getting with the brute, at least with Gloom.
Do you have any input on my first question: the Aesthetics of 'Static Discharge'? I'd sure like to know what that looks like.
Thanks -
Quote:KB looks way cool, but it causes grief too often. I'll bring up this particular 'tired complaint' over and over on threads like this because this is one of those complaints that happens to be true. And maybe, just maybe, someone with the power to do so might do something about it, and hopefully they'll do it in such a way that Those-who-love-KB-as-is can keep it.There are untold numbers of people unsatisfied with any subject you can conceive of. It doesn't mean they're right. It also doesn't necessarily mean they're wrong but subscribing to the notion of "squeaky wheel gets the oil" demeans the argument further.
But when people keep bringing up the same tired complaint over and over despite being given the same counterarguments each and every time, refusing to see that no, they haven't come up with the suggestion of the century, you're bound to start getting more and more flippant responses.
It's kind of like the "Merge the servers!" threads getting repeated on a predictable cycle (anti-KB is roughly 1 thread/month, sometimes more, sometimes less) and Memphis_Bill taking the time to build a summary canned response for them.
The 'Tired Complaint' once more:
I play a heavy KB toon (a Peacebringer) regularly. Yes, when on teams, I have learned how to control my KB via maneuvering, using walls, etc, so as not to be disruptive.
Nevertheless, maneuvering takes some time (small, but enough that I don't get off an AoE attack or two just about every spawn), and I also find myself not using Solar Flare (a very damaging power) and Luminous Detonation fairly often because I'm unable to position properly (open maps, not enough spawns out on the edges to 'knockback' towards the melee types).
I can successfully control my KB, but it just gets danged annoying that I have to so much. A PB (a Team AT) not being able to use half its AoE powers because they annoy the team *rolls eyes*
I want to Blast the Bejeezus out of Stuff, but no, I have to flit and flutter around finding the least likely scatter-spot, make sure I'm facing a wall and play mob-handball.
Team with more tolerant players, perhaps? I play randomly and at odd hours, thus I PuG alot. I don't always have time to find tolerant players - and frankly, it's annoying and patronizing that I should even have to.
But whatever, I'm playing my SS Brute lately, so everybody's happy... -
Only have one high level Villain, a Brute, so don't really have much exposure to the PPPs...
Essentially, I love the 'prototype' super: flying, super strong, super tough, tireless... So I rolled an SS/WP Brute and drove it to 50. I decided to forego any PPPs initially, because 1) the Powers really didn't appeal to me thematically and 2) I've seen myself as a Rogue from the beginning, not really kowtowwing to anyone just to get Powers; ergo, no Patron.
However, my perfect flying brick prototype usually has some energy like ranged attack thrown in there with smashing stuff, so I gave in and did Scirroco's arc, respecced, and picked up Lightning Bolt and Ball Lightning. (I feel so tainted...)
Anyway, I'm an immerser, and the appearance and theme of powers matter to me. What I'd really prefer is a couple of Energy/Force type ranged attacks, but none of the Brute PPPs really seem to offer anything like that. Mu Mastery seemed the closest, and while I'm 'okay' with Lightning Bolt, I'm not really happy with Ball Lightning (flipping an energy ball in a nice leisurely arc...Nah, I wanna blast stuff in a cooler way), so thinking about respeccing.
Questions: 1) What does Static Discharge look like? What's the animation? Does the 'cone' of lighting bolts travel directly to the targets instead of in some arc? Does anybody have a link to videos of said power(s)?
2) Soul Mastery: is there anything resembling Fire/Energy there? I suspect the powers are dark themed (which won't work), but maybe with Customization coming, they could be colored to resemble it, perhaps?
Heck, hopefully Brute's will get something a an Energy/Fire/Force PPP someday... -
-
One thing, eh? I suppose it must be within the realm of potential-stuff-we-could-have...
Hmmm... Environmental Interaction of the superheroey kinds, I suppose: chunking cars and foes, damaging buildings and terrain, being able to save and carry (or smack) civilians
And also...*slap*... oh yeah, only one... -
Quote:You guys can be vehemently opposed and think 'that is all' all you want.^ This
If it's not broken;
For the love of PETE don't mess around with it!
That is all.
Ever heard of the phrase 'Where there's smoke there's fire?'
I'm of the opinion that when the same subject keeps coming over, and over, and over... by many different people, then there's likely a problem that *should* be looked at.
So many threads and posts about KB... Why? You'd think that something that works 'just fine' wouldn't get so much discussion time. I think it's indicative of a real issue, but I guess I'm just a whiner like the rest
I'd still prefer global KB, but knowing that's about as likely as my female toons being able to run around nude, I'm for alternatives: I believe there should be a toggle that an AT could use that would turn its (and only its) KB to KD (by lowering the mag, whatever...). Then you could have your KB when you wanted it, and turn it off if needed (or requested by team leaders). Win/Win. If any KB lovers have a problem with that, you're just being argumentative.
When I'm sololing my PB, I really do like my KB, but I'd sure like to be able to turn it off when teaming.
Now, that is all -
Yes, the Kheldian AT was designed to be a shapeshifter, but I fail to see how that was meant to be the only path intended. A Kheldian has 24 (that's Twenty-Four!) other powers in their primary/secondary beyond the shapeshift toggles. The VAST Majority of these will not work when Shapeshifted, noR can these be slotted to a good level of effectiveness if one chooses to go the Tri-Form route. There won't be enough slots left over.
So many Powers and Slots that are mutually exclusive to shapeshifting... In light of this, *IF* Shapeshifting is intended to be the path Kheldians should take (and it's considered gimping if you don't), then as Billz says, it's Bad Design... Very Bad.
