I don't consider a large portion of what is in the packs as a "prize". I consider it "stuff I will not use", and therefore unneeded clutter.

They are worth more to you or the developers than a dollar, but a lot of us disagree.

    Worth buying in my opinion:
    • ATOs
    • Catalysts
    • Costume Parts
    On the fence about:
    • Black Wolf
Not worth buying in my opinion:
    • Reward Merits (I do Task Forces/trials far more than regular missions. I have plenty of these.)
    • Inspirations of any type (yet to use a single one from the Paragon Rewards Program.)
    • Enhancement Boosters (yet to use a single one from the Paragon Rewards Program.)
    • Enhancement Unslotters (yet to use a single one from the Paragon Rewards Program)
    • Windfalls (okay, I've actually used a couple of these from my Paragon Rewards.)
    • Prestige Boosters (don't even get me started about these.)
    • Revive temp power (I carry wakies.)
    • Restore temp power (Day Jobs and I tend to play healers...)
    • Experienced temp powers. (I already get 20 per character, and that is enough to last me from 1-50.)

The problem is that me not getting what I like is a huge negative to me. That means I lose value for every item I get that I don't like. They don't have any merit to them in my perspective, so I lose money. Money that I would normally use to buy a costume set or a power set. The same goes for the Paragon Rewards Tokens, which I use for the VIP costume sets.

Nibbled To Death. A buck here, a couple bucks there, and 0.75 another place. It all adds up. There comes a point where it becomes too much. However because of the nature of these purchases, it is easy to lose track and overspend. The developers are actually betting on that with these packs. The number of early adopters plunking down $100 (or more) today would very likely be considered a huge success by business management and marketing. However the other side of that coin is the number of people upset over these packs.

As my art history teacher once told me, cultural movements are either a positive or negative reaction to an event. Right now, the developers are seeing both, but are favoring the people buying the packs as they directly benefit from the sales.
  3. Oh, and the reason that the main building isn't a 3D cube is to show what is behind the main building (hospital and a safer from Visicorp to TPN Today behind the main building).

  4. I thought this might be of some help for players.

Either way, when the card is common, the game rolls vs the table and then produces a result.

For example, the odds of getting a rare XP Booster temp power award (two uses) is 9%. But if all three costume items are taken, those odds shift to 9.28%.
    Actually 14.06%.

Because the shift is small, the odds can be approximated as if the costume pieces didn't change anything. But if you actually wanted to know with absolute precision how the costume pieces shift the odds, that can be computed in theory. I leave that to people with more free time than I (says the player that opened 2000 super packs to collect the odds).
Here is a Google Spreadsheet with the packs with and without the account unlocks:

For those interested, I've updated this spreadsheet with extra columns showing what would happen to the tables if you got a single account item.

In a way, yes they need this.

    Think of it this way:
    • One of 8 types of Medium Dual Inspirations.
    • One of 6 types of Medium Team Inspirations.
    • One of 4 types of Medium Team Dual Inspirations.
    • One of 7 types of Large Dual Inspirations.
    • One of 5 types of Large Team Inspirations.
    • One of 3 types of Large Team Dual Inspirations.
    • Five chances at Enhancement Unslotters.
    • Six chances at Enhancement Boosters.
    • Eight chances at Revive Temp Powers.
    • Eight chances at Restore Temp Powers.
    • Five chances at Experienced Powers.
    • Three chances at Prestige Boosters.
    • Twelve chances at Reward Merits.
    • Ten chances at the Elemental Order Belt.
    • Ten chances at the Elemental Order Sleeves.
Now, they could have given the costumes an even higher chance at appearing, but what they are doing is saying is that you have:
    • A 33% chance to get inspirations in the common table.
    • A 35% chance to get temp powers or boosts in the common table.
    • A 12% chance to get Reward Merits in the common table.
    • A 20% chance to get costumes in the common table.

I'm not interested in applying any legal definition of gambling to these packs. Paragon Studios, and likely NCsoft, vetted these with their legal department.

That being said, they are gambling because they fit the term. Calling it anything else is just an abuse of the language.

You're paying to play a game, but it's not gambling; there's no situation in which you can end up with more real money than what you started with.
There is no need, in the dictionary usage, for the item being "won" to have a monetary value. That is a legal definition that doesn't apply to these packs.

Again, it isn't gambling by the legal definition, but it is by the dictionary definition. That is what is called in real life, "close enough".

And I'm not going to take anyone seriously that is either unwilling or unable to call something exactly what it is. You want to pretend that these packs are something other than what they are. At best, that is self-delusional. At worst, that is downright dishonest.

Same here. I had an uncle die of alcohol addiction, one of my friend's parents is also an alcoholic, and I have a family member that is addicted to gambling.

And I'm getting a laugh over YOUR butthurt that you can't even call these packs exactly what they are: gambling.

For the record, the items I want the most from these packs are the ATOs and I'm going to get them with in-game actions.

Like if you already have the gloves, and then you get another costume card that would have been the gloves again, the game won't switch the costume card for another drop type - it'll give you another costume part instead - which means that the more parts you have, the more likely you are to get the missing parts.
Wrong. If you had the gloves, and the game "rolls" the gloves again, it will re-roll on that rarity until such time as it doesn't pick an account unlock you already have.

    Edit:
Apparently, it actually removes the item from the tables completely.

I don't know why they just didn't say every pack was C-C-U-R-V. Why is there even a chance at C-C-C-U-R?

And get the reward merits OUT of the Very Rare and Rare categories.

And every single consumable in those packs was, in my opinion, a waste of my time, effort, and potential money.

I don't need or use the same consumables that are a part of my veteran rewards, so why would I want to pay for them?

I'm not fooling myself: people will buy these packs. Heck, people will plunk down hundreds of dollars on these packs. These people are predisposed to dismissing my opinion of these packs.

I know I'm not going to change anyone's opinion of these packs. However, I do have the freedom to make my opinion about these packs known.

Yes, each item in the paragon market has an 8-digit alphanumeric "product code" that is applied to your account. Each of the costume pieces in this pack has their own product code and you can't get permanent account-wide unlocks multiple times with this system, with a few exceptions like the invention system unlock or character slots.

On beta, it took 13 packs for me to get the costume set: $13. It took to the 32 pack for the black wolf pet. Then again, those numbers are about as meaningful as trying to count sand grains on a beach.

The morally bankrupt people I was referring to was Business Management and Marketing divisions of Paragon Studios. Though I do reserve to say that people spending hundreds of dollars on these packs have more money than brains. I use the same term for those that get involved with CCG games now.

When combined with Z's post on The Numbers we should be able to put together some better estimation tools.

Quickly, an average pack has 2.21 Common, 1 Uncommon, 1 Rare, and 0.79 Very Rare.

Does it look like a duck? Pay money for a random chance at something you want.

Odds are, it is a duck: It fits the definition of gambling, so I don't see the need to avoid the term.
