With the temporary loss of a fully-functional dev digest, some folks got the idea that the devs are spending more time tweeting than posting. To re-assure the worry warts and catch the occasional tweet that DOES enlighten our corner of the world, this thread will have copies of the dev tweets posted to it.
Note that I make no claims to know the Twitter accounts of all of our red-names or to be following them all. If anyone wants to contribute, feel free. This thread is being launched as an honest effort to help out the non-Twitterers on the forums, so while it's not all "tweetin' is srs bsns", posting fake tweets as a joke should be frowned upon. We want to provide actual nuggets of information here.
A key to the personalities we're following (Sorry, I don't know everyone's real name):
Positron_CoH = Matt Miller, aka Positron, Head Honcho
CoHBaBs = Christopher Bruce, aka Back Alley Brawler, Lead Animator
MelissaBianco = Melissa Bianco, aka War Witch, Senior Game Designer
CoH_OCR = City of Heroes Online Community Relations
BruceHH = Bruce Harlick, Game Designer
Niviene_CoH = Niviene, Community Specialist
Avatea = Avatea, Community Specialist
TheDarkWatcher = Vince D'Amelio, Senior Programmer
_EMpulse_ = Empulse, Community Specialist
plaync = NCSoft announcements
Note that I have no intention of posting every tweet ever made by these people. If you're THAT interested in what they have to say, you can darn well learn how to Twitter yourself!
A posting beginning with "RT" indicates a "retweet". That is, the poster is reposting a message they got from another source. A post beginning with an @ sign followed by a Twitter ID is a reply to previous posting by that other person. -
While I am not privy to the inner working of the NCSoft cabal, I'd be inclined to believe that the marketing of the game is actually done out of Austin at NCSoft rather than out of Mountainview at Paragon Studios.
If true, you may be preaching to the wrong choir. -
Quote:This. Anyone who is afraid that Twitter is stealing our devs away from the forums is someone who hasn't been following the stuff that they're actually tweeting.Twitter update:
Bruce Harlick: Bacon of Hope: the tastiest cleric spell in 4e.
If it's really an issue, someone could always create a "RedTweet" thread and re-post all of the tweets to the forums for discussion. Kinda silly thing to do but you'd be certain you weren't missing out on learning that Positron just made his 100th tweet or that he's leery of catching a cold from BruceHH...
Besides, most of the devs who post on Twitter originally got there because they were trying to fill the gap left in their souls by the absence of the forums during the merge. They're as addicted to the community here as we are... -
Quote:No it wouldn't. If you'll pardon me saying so, that's a rather silly idea, primarily because it's way too open-ended on the one hand, and it doesn't actually generate extra revenue on the other. In fact, it takes extra revenue away!If this hypothetical NCSoft Game Pass would not cover the cost of multiple CoX accounts that would piss off all those people with multiple accounts.
The point of the Station Pass or any similar arrangement is that it encourages the players who would normally have a single subscription to go ahead and agree to send you more money than they otherwise would. The point for players is to get a variety of games that you ordinarily wouldn't experience, not to go wild and get a bunch of new accounts in your primary game for free. I've never met any EQ player who felt cheated that his Station Pass account only covered one of this six EQ accounts.
I agree that an umbrella account psychologically needs a lower price point than two individual subscriptions. It was certainly true for me. I had considered re-opening my Station Pass account when Pirates of the Burning Sea opened because I enjoyed the beta and Matrix Online was just coming under the umbrella around that time. That was also the time the price increased to $29.95 and, psychologically speaking, my thought processes went like "If I'm going to pay the full price of two subscriptions, then I'm going to make the second subscription one that I really want to pay full price for, like CoH or WoW." They lost me because, despite the value-adds of the new games, they rose past my "this is a bargain" barrier.
Since they've never lowered the price again, they must be getting enough people to justify keeping it at that price. Like I mentioned earlier, as a Free Realms player, and having a passing interest in DCUO it might become a bargain again, but probably not, especially since the umbrella shrank just recently.
Re: The Matrix Online - SOE only took it on in the first place as part of a larger deal to get the rights to DCUO and bring it under the Station Pass. I'd speculate that they ran it for as long as Warner Bros. was originally contracted to run it and then shut it down as soon as the contract expired. -
Quote:This should tell you something about how successful Sony and LucasArts believed the open class system was.Champions online is open Archtype.
As was SWG before they destroyed it by closing the classes
*hint* They believed it was a failure because it was too complex and too flexible. They changed to the current system because their research showed that players preferred "classes" as opposed to choice.
Whether their research was flawed or not is open to debate, but the fact remains that in their eyes the open archetype system was driving players away instead of attracting them. -
Actually, the biggest problem is that players would LOSE to the AI. Gamers play these games in order to feel powerful. The worst thing you could do from a marketing standpoint is to make an AI that actually behaves intelligently. You'd have most of your players quitting because the game was "too hard".

As a one-time Station Pass subscriber, I've said all along that NCSoft missed a trick when they canned Auto Assault and then Tabula Rasa instead of using them as a value-add for their own umbrella account along with CoH, Lineage and Lineage 2.
Toss in a premium membership for Dungeon Runners and something like an allowance of 100 NCCoin or some such for Exteel and you'd have a package worth paying $25 a month. If Aion went under the umbrella and it was "all that", then it might be worth $30 a month. It's too early to tell that right now. If Guild Wars 2 ever becomes something more than vaporware and IT went under the umbrella, then I'd be signing up for the umbrella on launch day, probably.
If DCUO was looking at all attractive, I might still consider re-upping a Station Access pass to play DCUO and Pirates of the Burning Sea. The Station Pass includes premium membership in Free Realms and I'm already a member there at $5 a month, so it'd be a win for me even without also being able to revisit the various EQ games and Star Wars Galaxies when I took a hankering to do so. Not to mention free cards and stuff in their online TCG's also.
Yes, I'd even consider an Atari umbrella account if they bought a couple of smaller games and added them as a bundle to Star Trek and Champions.
It all boils down to value for the dollar. -
History teaches that if you target your game at a niche audience that you will usually fail when your audience fails to grow beyond its niche. Eve Online is the one glaring exception, though it's more a case of proving over time that the niche was bigger than anybody realized.
In this case, the niche appears to be people who value story over achievement.
I think that game would probably fail in the long term, unless it had a constant steady stream of new and compelling story content such that the other types of players would eventually see how happy the story-types were and decide they wanted a piece of that action.
The reason that so many games have a "leveling" concept is that it's an easily understood metric for measuring advancement. It makes comparing e-peens easier (I mean that nicer than it sounds) and it gives the achievers a feeling that they are achieving something tangible.
When you start at the top, you have to come up with some other kind of metric that gives the achievers something to work towards or you'll never pull them into the fold and your game will die from lack of players.
Horizons and Shadowbane are proof of the folly of targeting your game tightly at a single niche in the belief that everyone who likes that niche will sign up just because of your tight focus. -
I'll be 60-month in November if not before. Got some irregularities on my plaync account that I'm having investigated. There seem to be quite a few people like myself that have been around since launch and either taken short breaks occasionally or been subscribed the entire time. I'm sure they could field several hundred if they wanted or needed to. Compared to 100k+ that may sound small, but you want the initial wave to be smallish anyway, usually.

Quote:Are you sure you aren't confusing PP with someone else? She's never made any bones about her farming activities as far as I can remember.She trolls farmers for "how they play the game wrong" and she does it herself. What's next? Does she actually really love CO?
The most you can really say is that she was one of the many folks who thought that the farmers ought to get out of Atlas Park (primarily because they were only recruiting high-levels who are typically not the intended audience of Atlas Park), but otherwise she hasn't condemned farming as evil that I can recall, let alone "trolled" the farmers. -
I'm going on 57 months so I don't typically worry about this stuff. As a result of reading this thread, I logged into my plaync account and I was surprised to see that my last vet reward and my upcoming vet reward both have an elapsed time of four months instead of three months.
I'll see what CS says about it. I'm glad this got brought to my attention if it turns out that I should actually be most of the way to 60 months at this point. -
I'm just going to be glad when CO finally launches and it stops being news.
Now, getting back to the real topic - What kind of bribe is Paragon Studios going to offer me that's superior to a badge? -
The EU game launched a year or so after the original game launched. Given that we don't know when the actual closed beta will be, it's possible that there'll be a general opportunity for the long-term EU players to hig 60+ months, realistically it's unlikely unless they're one of the much smaller number who started out on the NA game and stayed there instead of switching when the EU servers went online.
It doesn't matter, though. Tier 2 is basically everybody with a subscription in September. As long as every EU subscriber on the books today stays a subscriber for the next three months, they'll get into the closed beta (along with everyone else who keeps their subscription active during those months). -
Quote:Okay, let's address what you're posting: Dude, take a chill pill.Or are we going to continue to mock the way in which I'm posting, and the place in which I'm posting, instead of actually addressing what I'm posting.
When Niviene starts rounding up the Europeans and telling them not to come out of the "EU Lounge" ghetto, then you can get angry.
It's not our fault that your English-speaking board got merged into our English-speaking board while the French and Germans got to keep their own boards. We had nothing to do with it. We're just players, the same as you.
Whoever created the "EU Lounge" was trying to soften the blow by giving you a little piece of home. They weren't out to segregate you and point out how "different" you are.
As for the passive-aggressive hate, maybe you need to take a look around at the whole forum. In the Roleplaying forum we embraced each other and said "Yay, more RP and more fiction to read!" I'm guessing they did pretty similarly in the art and media forums.
I haven't even really noticed much a difference in "Hero and Villain Culture" aka "Effectively, Off-topic".
You're getting your panties in a knot about the fact that here in this forum we're all just acknowledging that we've got new neighbors. Big smegging deal. Guess what? We've had Euros in this forum from the beginning. It's not REALLY that novel an experience.
As for me calling it "this forum", I can't help that it feels like you were moved into ours as opposed to both neighborhoods being bulldozed and a new joint neighborhood being built. When I look around, I see the trappings of our NA website surrounding it. When I browse the merged forum, I see mostly the threads that were in our forums before the merges. We were more prolific posters than you because there are more of us.
Hate on it if you want, but to most NA forumites, this is going to feel like you were transplanted into our forums. Sorry that offends you or that we have our own American or Canadian ways of expressing the jostling as we all shift and make room for the new neighbors. When you've contributed around here the way that LadySadako has or developed the annoying-yet-strangely-lovable rep of GoldenGirl or earned a rep for thoughtful commentary like SamuelTow or just become a regular and positive participant like any of the other Brits, Aussies, and other non-NA forumites who have lived here for years, then we'll consider you family and ease off on the razzing.
Don't like? Tough. You're in America now, cowboy! Put on your big girl pants and deal! -
-
I just want a better bribe. If I was wavering about canceling CoX to try CO then that's partly a financial decision. Especially in these tough economic times, I'm going to want some extra value for my money if I have two subscriptions going at once. A badge is like a free cookie at the grocery store bakery. If I'm supposed to keep shopping at the grocery instead of switching to the new market that just opened up the street, then I'd better get a bag of groceries, or at least some good coupons.
