I personally go for ranged defense on my doms. The problem I find with s/l is if you run into any other kind of damage you tend to splat, however you can (almost always if your paying attention) keep the damage just ranged/aoe by kiting, immobing, or just generally running around like a spaz. I also think Def shouldn't take such a backseat to recharge. once you have perma def is better then recharge in most cases. You'll miss mobs with your aoe sometimes you'll get ambushed so while the controls are awesome they won't always keep you alive.
