    Settle down, Beavis.

Yes, that's what they and I take that caveat to mean they've at least considered the idea. From there, I just went on to point out changes that have happened in the meantime that make it more practical to do now and some speculation on what it might look like.

So, what if I RP'd every one of them, and while her back story is the same, the people she is associated with is going to change from server to server. How do those people differentiate between seven different 'Angel Red's now running around?
The wonderful thing about RP is it allows for unlimited creativity. Any corner you can RP yourself into, you can RP yourself out of.

Whether it's just fine or not is a matter of some debate.

I guess that's one way to interpret it. My reading of it is that in adding that caveat they are demonstrating that the idea has at least crossed their minds. No, it's not definitive but then the entire notion has been couched in terms of hints and educated guesses to start with.

Did you miss the part where I said I play on a lower population server intentionally? Intentionally. That means I don't like the atmosphere Freedom has and don't want to play there. If I want to play on Freedom, I can play there anytime, same as you can.

Currently, I have the choice of playing somewhere that ISN'T crowded full of idiots who think I'm obligated to join their team just because they sent a tell. I prefer it that way.

That is what would change. I would be crammed in with a whole bunch of people I don't WANT to be crammed in with.

Stop thinking about what YOU want, and consider that some people don't like the playstyle you seem to prefer. Your desires are not more important than mine. Deal with the fact that I have the right to play how I want, just like you do. You want to see crowded zones that lag out every time someone sneezes, you know where to go. Don't force ME to go there too.

But I keep forgetting the me me me, now now now mentality people seem to have these days. Who gives a crap if someone else is inconvenienced as long as you get YOUR way, right?

I hope you find yourself on the receiving end of that attitude someday. You'll get just as indignant then as you do now when someone tells you that, no, in fact you are NOT more important than everyone else and don't deserve to get what you want just because you threw a hissy fit about it.
Time to cap the rage spill there buddy, it's endangering wildlife.

As players neither of us is in a position to force anything on the other. We just happen to have differing opinions on where the game is likely to go and whether it'd be a bad thing.

I happen to have the view that given the tools we have for managing our visibility to others, the ongoing infrastructure changes they're making to handled increased loads, the fact that most content is instanced and thus free from "crowds" ... there is no doom scenario associated with a serverless game.

I also don't buy the "people on server X are of a different nature than people on server Y" line of reasoning either. I've played on a variety of them and for any decent sample size, players are players regardless of server there's a mix of good, bad and ugly types.

Overall, I view the partitioning of the playerbase into multiple servers not as a feature or a benefit but rather just the side effect of technical limitations six years ago.
  5. I have gone a couple more rounds of back and forth with tech support today. While there has been no solution yet, my confidence that they are taking a serious look at it has gone up a couple notches.

The latest two things they had me try were the somewhat standard go to msconfig and turn off all startups and non microsoft services, followed by uninstalling the hp wireless assistant service.

The first had no effect but it did bring me down to a lean, mean 28 processes after boot. Win 7 looks downright skinny right now.

The second had no effect but this was kind of expected since the hp wireless assistant service was one of the ones disabled in the first step.

Because every story is better with pictures, I also threw in this crudely annotated screenshot of the latest try:

That means my 12 Swellguys are going to all be on my character screens. What differentiates them? Perhaps I really like the name Piratey McPirate and I have 12 of them.
Their AT, level, current location, appearance, position in the list or any other information that could potentially be added or removed from character selection could differentiate them for you. Having created and leveled all these toons yourself, a certain familiarity with them could be taken for granted.

    Quote:
Also we currently max out at 3 screens of 12 characters. Do you think that will go to 33 screens of 12 characters max? Some people have more than 36 characters across the servers.
Lots of ways to approach that. Starting with the assumption that they wouldn't take an approach that forced anyone to give up any existing toon for lack of character slots, I suppose they'd revamp the character interface in some fashion that allowed easy management and selection from a larger number of potential slots. After all, nothing is etched in stone when it comes to interface, many areas of the game have been added, changed or revamped over the years.

Another issue from serverless situation is supergroups which are duplicately named on other servers.
Yes, work would have to be done on how that's handled. There's certainly more than one way it could go, just one of which would be simply allowing duplicate names to exist.

    Quote:
This thing is not the slam dunk no problem you seem to be painting.
No, it's not a slam dunk. If it were that simple it would've happened already. At one point they warned could go serverless one day. Since then they've taken steps that could, for the sake of discussion, be a connect the dots roadmap to that coming to pass and I'm just speculating on what that might look like if it did.

Correct. That is my premise, based on the steps they have taken so far with global names.

    Quote:
All communications will be based on the globalname. Meaning that there would no longer be server friends, only global friends.
This is also an accurate implication of what I'm saying.

    Quote:
Any specific character name would be meaningless.
Yes. This. A toon name is just words floating over your toon's head. Currently there are dependencies on that toon name--chat, email, friends, etc. The absolute need for these dependencies is gradually being chipped away at by expansion of the use of global names. I don't think it's a ridiculous leap of imagination to speculate they could take the final step and make it so that the toon name truly is nothing more than letters over your toon's head with no more requirement for uniqueness than a title, your costume, powers or any other aspect of character data.

    Quote:
This ignores the fact that if they did so, we could have 10000 "Bill Z Bubba"s on at the same time, all filling up teams and making communication a nightmare because the character name would still have to be the one that shows up in team chat.
Here's where we part company. I'm suggesting that while the team display and chat currently display character names only, that could certainly change. See for example, any global chat channel as just one example of how people in the game communicate completely independent of toon names.

See also how some people choose to use binds to display their current toon name in addition to their global name when talking in global chat.

Not saying that this is how it will happen, simply that these examples illustrate how it could happen and that the idea isn't far fetched.

    Quote:
So regardless of the attempt, it fails to correct for the issue at hand by creating more problems.

In other words, it's a crap idea no matter how you look at it.
You can certainly choose to dislike the idea, but there's a real difference between saying "that can't work" and "I don't like it."

[edit] Oh goodie, you added links to your two earlier posts where you mention the global name.

Looks like you still fail then for my example and Bill's.
Of course you have the "same" global name on every server. By definition, that is what a global name is.

In your example, they could chose to... or not to... allow the same name to be used more than once on a single account. That's a design choice and I suppose there are plenty of valid reasons why they might chose one way or the other in a scenario where they cut the cord on using toon names for communication/email.

However, there is nothing about it that dictates they couldn't chose to allow it and having to rename your duplicates is in no way a consequence that absolutely follows from using global names.

  10. AV/anti-malware is definitely a major exception to the rule of getting what you pay for. The major AV suites, in order to justify continual payments and upgrades bloat and bloat until they become huge, resource sucking monsters that cling to windows like an alien facehugger.

Something, introduced in i17, demands much more CPU than it was in i16.
Yes and no. The CPU is pegged at 100% utilization with the game running, however it doesn't drop when the game is in the background. CPU remains at 100% with the focus off the game and the window visible and the connection good. Same with game minimized.
  13. So far, having received all the preceding information, tech support has offered the following:
    • Lower the priority of the coh task

This sounded promising. Unfortunately no lowering (or raising for that matter) of the coh task priority had any effect.
    • Contact the manufacturer of your router for help in optimizing your wireless connection.

    This is a blowoff.

Ok, I'll bite. It *is* wireless but it's *also* specific to CoH where the game is causing a conflict with something in certain environments where CoH ran just fine before i17. Here's an overview of symptoms:
    • Wireless connection and CoH running, the game gets pulses of packet loss every few seconds. These show up in game as "lost connection to mapserver" messages. Using netgraph, you see alternating red-green-red-green stretches.
    • Wireless connection and CoH running, if you switch away from the game, the problem goes away. This is clearly visible when running in windowed mode with netgraph running. Click on the game window and you see the red-green-red-green. Click off the CoH window and netgraph goes clear green. You can still see game activity going on with people running back and forth, autofire powers going off, etc... and the connection is perfectly smooth.
    • Plugged into the router with a network cable, the game works fine, no connection issues.
    • Wireless connection and a different online game, no problems.
    • Wireless connection, anything else (web browsing, video, file transfers, etc), no problems.
    • Wireless connection, different computer, same network, running CoH, no problems.

  16. Update:

The Level 2 tech support AV just one-shotted me with a "Please consult the router's manufacturer for assistance with optimizing your wireless setup" attack.

I respawned, went to my base for inspirations and came back with a recap of all the reasons why that would be fruitless.

    more to come...

Merging would play havoc with those characters and drive *current* players away. Which would also not help the people who insist they can't find a team.
Unless they began allowing duplicate toon names and made all communication based on your unique global. Which, with the latest changes to email, they have the pieces in place to do if they chose to.

  19. I would also add that avira offers a free scanner that you can download and burn as a bootable CD. It's a really good idea to grab it, burn it and set it aside while your system is healthy because by the time you need it your system will probably be too wrecked to get on the internet and get it.

If you do get something nasty like rootkit malware on your system there's a good chance it will prevent you from using any effective cleanup tools while running the infected windows install.

Running a scanner from a bootable CD won't completely clean an infected windows install but what it will do is find and delete enough of the bad files to cripple the infection enough to then boot into windows and use your other tools.

The avira CD can be found here:

    http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html
  20. I use a program called malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org). Over the last couple years it has been extremely reliable on my boxes and other people's machines I've had to clean up, consistently finding and killing stuff that walked right through norton and mcafee. You can get a free version that only does on-demand scans or one that runs in the background for $25 one-time fee.

    Merging servers.

It has taken them a long time and they move in baby steps but an educated guess can be made that server merging, or maybe more accurately, a serverless game is on the horizon.

The most compelling reason to think it's going to happen is that when character transfers were first introduced, they added the specific caveat that the game might one day go serverless so buyer beware when it came to spending the cash to transfer a character.

It hasn't happened yet because they had two problems to overcome, name conflicts and setting up their infrastructure to handle the load.

On the first point, the latest email changes are just the most recent in a series of changes to make everything revolve around unique global names. They've gone far enough now where they could cut the cord on using individual character names for anything other than floating over your toon's head and everything would still work.

On the hardware side, freedom has been an obvious guinea pig with multiple rounds of hardware upgrades. Loads that used to bring it to its knees during special events now barely cause a hiccup.

I'd speculate that free server transfers were a trial baloon to see how people would behave if the game were serverless. A way to gather much more reliable data than just throwing out a survey.

From the outside, not knowing their priorities or what specific snags are left to resolve it's impossible to say what the timeline is. They might spend another year or two fiddling around with it or they could just spring it in the next issue. However, the smart money is on when not if it happens.
  22. Ditto on that. The problem has not magically disappeared for me either.

I started on the tech support ticket task force today. After one gather system data mission and three waves of defeat all form letter email questionnaires I made it to level two and my problem has been escalated.

Another postscript to the story, I got the game patched up and running again on my old (and I do mean ancient) laptop with the lowest end specs that will even run the game at all--and it works fine. Well, as fine as it did before i17 anyway. That should be a useful temp power if they spawn a "buy yourself a new router" AV on me.

So lay off. You don't know what your are talking about, and from what you've posted here, everybody in NCSoft's technical support did everything right.
By what logic does concluding the problem is local somehow mean it can't be caused by a problem in the game itself?

I can tell you, I'm having the same issue as the original poster and every indication so far is that it's a game issue.

    Tankender??????

For me, tankfender means being able to step in and take the alpha from a spawn and maintain an umbrella of basic safety/support where the rest of the team can operate without having to worry about anything ripping their heads off.

My vote would be for dark. You can floor the tohit of most opponents, spam out a big aoe heal, rez, soft control, slow and -res. Then you get a pet that does most of those same things as well.

Add the dark blast secondary and you stack even more -tohit, aoe immob, a little aoe stun and another self heal.
