Quote:It doesnt really phase me either, yet I enjoy the trials. Go figure. In the 7 years I have been playing, I have had three purple recipes drop on me. I make my own luck. I play the game to try out different powersets, and find things that synergize well. People farm for influence. I pl a new toon, any infl. I get while doing so just adds to the bank. This is B. F. Skinner at his finest. The theory goes that if you give people a definite goal with defined requirements, say "run 50 Trials," then people will not be motivate towards the beginning, because they'll know the first or second or third Trial will not give them the reward. They'll become very motivated and increase their playtime when they're near the goal, say on Trials 47, 48 and 49, but then once they have that reward and they're looking at the next one another, say, 50 Trials away, they'll pause because they'll be satiated with the reward and disincentivised by knowing that the next one is far away.
Heartless game developers fear these pauses, because YOU MAY NOT COME BACK!!! So they don't want you to stop playing ever ever, for which they need a different design, one which gives you incentive to try hard ALL the time. Enter random drops. With a random drop, players are motivated to try hard ALL the time, because you don't know when the next drop will happen. It might well be on this very Trial, even if it's the first one you do. It won't be, of course, but it won't stop players thinking that, who knows? It might drop on the second one. And so on and so forth.
At least that's the expected reaction. As someone told me earlier in the thread "[I'm] not responding." And I'm not, because when I look at this kind of random drop system, my thought isn't "Holy addiction, Batman! I might get my reward on this very run!" but rather "I have to run how many of this thing? And I may still get bupkis at the end? Sod this, I have better things to do with my life."
If I want to take it further, and slot the toon for set bonuses, or purples, I produce and sell items to the market. No depending on drops.
Even with the incarnate content, The first goal is the level shifts and tier 3's. If I can tier 4 anything, great, but I am not going to gripe that I cant complete a toon without my tier 4's. The toon is complete already, everything else is gravy. Actually, that is not true. The toon is never complete. The toon evolves with the game. I just honestly enjoy having a toon that is capable enough to solo a container spawn, or take care of a escapee door mostly on its own. Or hand trapdoor his *** even with his bifranubs out. -
Quote:If this isn't already in the rude tells thread, it should be. A good story to remember when people pine for the "good ol' days"That's not the funniest part of the story.
The team I was kicked from had THREE Empathy defenders on it......
The leader was a tank and was demanding that ALL THREE Empaths do NOTHING but spam Heal Other on him.
Before he booted me he booted one of his precious healers for attacking ONCE.
I warned everyone I knew not to team with that jacktard. As far as I'm aware he ragequit once the majority of the regulars on the server refused to team with him anymore. He didn't view other players as actually being other players, everyone existed for the sole purpose of buffing HIM.
I still shake my head when I think about that guy.
It's also amazing how often your sarcasm fails to register when you tell the Empath who is following the tank rockin' the aura: "Nice heals". -

It would have taken me awhile to be in any sort of shape to play again for the amount of laughing I would have done.

Quote:I hear you. For years I refused to team because my playtime was so erratic, I never knew if I was on for half an hour, or sometimes even less. Subjecting a team to that was not fair imo.Yeah, I'm not worried about my friends. I have a rather erratic on-off status, especially when I'm solo, since I tend to sometimes post on the forums while playing, walk away to have dinner or swivel my chair to watch TV, and quite often, too. I rarely need justifications with friends.
I'm more concerned with large teams with strangers, especially on larger commitments. I recall starting a TF years ago just 15 minutes before Van Helsing started on free TV. I couldn't well bail on the guys, but I wanted to watch the movie, so I spent my time with attention split about half-and-half. I did pretty well in terms of performance, but I managed to enjoy neither the TF nor the movie. That's kind of what I mean.
Thats one thing about these trials I enjoy so much. They can be completed in less than 45 mins, sometimes less than 30. That kind of time frame I can commit to, even with two kids under 3 years old. And if the kids need me? See you folks.
I really wish the turnstile system would give you the option of pulling you out of an instance or whatever. I would be much more willing to use it then. As of now, it is useless. Even with the carrots added to it. -
Quote:If its a good friend, they will probably understand and have been bailed on in that manner anyway. A good friend would probably realize the time and remind you. An aquaintance doesn't need an explanation imo. "Sorry, RL, Gotta bail mate" should cover it.The problem is that real life trumps a Trial only when the real-life activity in question is important. Yesterday, I had to bail on a friend of mine not because I had work in the morning or because I was late for dinner or anything even remotely justifiable, but because I wanted to watch the new episode of IRT Deadliest Roads. The History Channel only really show this once in the time slot that's comfortable for me, and if I miss it I need to wait for next Monday. If I miss it THEN, I don't get to see it at all.
How many people do you believe will show understanding if I bailed on a Trial with that excuse? -
-
One of the reasons why I love the trials is that they can be done easily in less that 45 mins. Right around the time it takes my sons to nap. Fancy that.

Quote:The precedent was set in the game long before incarnates were concieved. Pretty sure it was Geko that said the reason for increasing mission xp bonus was because the dev team wanted the players to play the missions they had created, and stop street sweeping.True story: A dev told me in beta they were afraid people wouldn't run the trials they put so much work into if there was an alternative (even if the alternative was slower).
Instead of just making sure the trials are fun and stand on their own merits, they decided to force play of them by making them the only way to advance.
Not saying its right. I have never enjoyed being told by the dev team what to play. -

Quote:One that also gives some resistance to Smashing and Energy, and the only one that provides KB protection, and already had half the duration of SB anyway? Yes, please. So much more worthwhile now.
Even if it isnt an aoe mez protection, the resistance is gives is nearly 40% when slotted for it. I am pretty sure that is the highest resistance protection you can get in the game from a single application. Taking 60% of the damage from the new clockwork? I'm your huckleberry. -
That person clearly hasnt used it on a spread out spawn. Pyronic reminds me of the time I watched my buddy get enveloped by a fireball while trying to light a deep fryer(just singed, but really funny). I see the look on his face everytime I fire it off.

The game is spitting out $5 bills and people are complaining they are not sequential. Same old story.
Quote:Now about that END issue! -
Quote:No scaling. End, recharge, everything the same, just a 30' buff bubble that catches everyone inside your target. besides you of course.I'm hoping they went thru the trouble of making it so it scales depending on how many targets you hit, maybe base 1 end for each extra target, but who knows if thats even possible. If not I'm likely going to be playing more ill/cold even less now, the idea of spending some +10 end to buff one god damn person, i duo or do smaller teams with him mostly, would be awful.

Quote:I honestly dont know. I do know that it is intended to be used with league members at least. I would hope pets as well, otherwise mm's get a wee bit of the shaft. Of course, watching 3 sets of mm pets on sb is popcorn worthy.Any idea yet who "eligible" targets are? Is it just team members, team members including only your pets, just league members, league members including pets, every living thing in the general area, etc?
Also, will the power change for critters? The Rikti might have just gotten a LOT more interesting. -
Combat Jumping will let you "walk" up most high walls as long as they are not perfectly vertical.

Quote:If you are relying on drops? I promise it takes less time to get the reactive componants you need to tier 4 it than it takes to have the 4 purple damage procs drop on you.and you must be kidding about purples taking longer to get than tier 4 Reactive Radial...
I have had 3 purples drop on me since they were introduced, and none of them were the damage procs. My reactive was teir 4 less than 2 weeks after it was released. Its nice to be able to choose exactly what gets dropped on you isnt it? (besides the random tables of course)
Of course, if you are saying you can just hit the market to grab your purps, well, you can get your VR's with 400m and a some easier to obtain components. Might take more time than buying the specific purps, but not by much... The 4 purp recipe's will cost much more than 400m btw. -
Quote:Isnt gloom a DOT? I thought there was a chance to proc for every tohit check, and thats why it was insane in rains and aura's. There should just be one tohit check for gloom afaik.Interface powers in general were broken in the sense that for each "tic" of damage the debuff would apply. I've been hit with gloom and saw each tic of damage stack up an interface debuff.
It procing for every application of a dot would be extra broken. -
Quote:Zwill has specifically stated that the recharge and end costs won't change. Seeing as he is not actually a powers guy and combine that with the recent its WAI, no wait, its a bug with reactive, I wouldn't get my hopes up too high yet.Now that they make it AoE, I wonder if the recharge/endurance/value are changed as well?
Of course, I am pretty sure he would confirm that before he would speak on it with authority, cause that would be either insane, or dense considering how recent the reactive kerfuffle was.
He also explicitly stated that it would not buff the caster. -
Really, you already have the option of excluding people. You are forgeting they are giving extra rewards to those that actually use the LFG Turnstile, and Open Leagues. Subtle way to get the playerbase to use content it has decided is subpar.
-
I suspect this thread is going to change direction very shortly.
-
It will be interesting to see if this changes how teams interact. I can't wait to see what kind of content is on the horizon where the devs are pushing us to huddle together.

Tsk Tsk. Chintzing out on your toxic resist. Poor show.
