Smart. We've got a ton of airline miles just sitting around waiting to be used. Problem is life just hasn't afforded the time to really put those to use.

Meanwhile, I can guarantee that I'll be using my PP points. Couldn't resist most booster packs. Now that I can use quasi-play money while in game to unlock all sorts of costume goodies that will hopefully be released in a more steady stream? You bet I'll keep spending them points. And if the extra $$$ I throw at my account to buy out the store of all cosmetic whoosawhatsits ends up being about the same $30 or so a year I'd spend on boosters, it's all the same in my book. Even better if I get more whoosawhatsits per year over the older booster model.

I like the idea of not having to wait anymore for them to get enough similar content together to actually put out say an "animal pack 2" or some stuff. Frog head, feet and hands with a nice spotty amphibian texture ready for release? Sweet! Put it up on the market. Opera Gloves with no other related costumes? Oh well, put it up on the market. etc.

This argument is always frustrating to me. Not everyone's character is a mask-and-cape superhero. For some characters, it's their daily job and there's no secret identity involved. Some characters are just magical beings who are out doing good. Some characters are undercover Resistance or Loyalist characters, signing up as "Heroes" in order to spy on the works in Primal Earth. Some characters are villains and don't need a super-hero moniker.

Whatever the case, it is absolutely false to say that you HAVE to have <Adjective> <Noun> Silver-Age superhero names. You can run a random string of syllables together and be a djinn whose master ordered her out to fight crime so he can stay home and watch TV. It's up to you who your character is.
That's fine if that floats your boat. But some of us quite enjoy those Silver Age conventions. The OP was simply and clearly stating that this is what they too enjoy and prefer about super hero identities.

By far I personally prefer those spandex <adjective> <noun> names over the <common name> <surname> convention or the <random-syllables-of-made-up-alien-demon-name> convention or the <not-so-clever-pun-derivative> convention or the <pvp-name-as-threat> convention. In fact, some of those other methods for arriving at names are so opposite what I enjoy that I'd never go that route, including some of them you champion in your post.

Anyways, as to the OP, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of more open naming scheme is in the works at Paragon Studios. Not saying it is coming, but the F2P and i21 stuff already sounds so very thorough (and is contrary to several public statements made regarding stuff like zone and content revamps) that I wouldn't be surprised at all if next week they came out and said, "Oh, by the way, with CoH:F, we'll be introducing a whole new localized naming scheme. Here's how it will work..."

  4. If you bought GR, my understanding is you still have access to Praetoria then as a premium player. So even if your sub lapses, you do have a perk that those who did not buy the expansion now have.

What's weird is that it's an emphasis on quick strikes which I assume less damage. Most games handle two handed wielding as higher damage per hit.
IMO, this reinforces speculation that it will be a staff style set as opposed to two-handed-giganto-anime weapons.

Something about a bo-staff stalker intrigues me.
  6. From this post http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...postcount=2204 regarding today's uStream highlights:

More content per issue in the last year than any other year so far.

More stuff in i21 than was in i18

Redone atlas park and mercy island. Buildings are distinct according to Beastyle, and Atlas park in particular is apparently very pretty.

Mercy has optimization pass but not the same level of awesomeness done to it yet

Villians won't spawn in fort darwin anymore. Much more impressive starting area in city is cited, apparently has a 'mind-blowing' vista.

New story: retake fort darwin from longbow

Beastyle: We are leaving the snakes alone

    Coming storm starts with i21

There will be a lot more reasons to make more alts

    VIP server is -optional-

20% of content not free to play is going to be compelling enough to keep you subscribed.

New powersets! LOTS OF POWERSETS:O (one might rhyme with orange?)

Next Ustream Black pebble wants a water gun.

If you have an alt on the VIP server and stop subscribing, you can use a server transfer token to move it to a server so you can continue playing premium

A LOT more content in game, but if what you want is more costume pieces or more powers only, you will be able to get those with free points.

Entire feature to come about Paragon rewards program.

When you drop from VIP to Premium, you get everything locked. When you relog in, you will get at least TWO tokens to unlock character slots to use for premium access, PLUS any you already have that aren't the twelve you get standard for subscribing(Vet reward and bought slots will be open)

No store info today - 400 points will be able to buy stuff. You'll be able to buy things and not feel gipped. To get everything immediately you could spend monies.(Zwil)

Incarnate is VIP ONLY, even if you own GR.

There are a LOT of things shiny-wise they can't talk about

Why is freedom good for VIP players?:

'literal Metric butt-ton of content', most of it for no more cost to VIP players.

Lots of new players - Hopefully exposed to GOOD shinyness of CoH community.

Yes there will be new advertising.

Tomorrow will have Positron and War Witch on the Ustream. Clockwork Oh-1 is scared of war witch canadian hockey anger issues.
So far, looks pretty good to me.

Edit: And sounds like that overall revamp of legacy content to bring it in line with GR that some of us have been encouraging is happening.
  7. Title of first story arc was already leaked:

    "Fusionette's Laundry"

Can't wait to see what the redside perspective of that one's gonna be.

Nah... just massive power customization for sonic that includes "weapon" customization and an audio suite of different sound effects to choose from, from acoustic to funk to metal power chords.

Edit: Of course then the forums will be filled with "Oh noes! City of Wyld Stallions!!!1!"

I included them there simply because I've heard on several occasions people misremember them as a very early 90s thing as opposed to '87. Same with Jane's Addiction. Anyways, results will vary depending upon the cultural memory of your local.

Also forgot the Pixies in that list...

You also highlight a number of key trends of the transition from the 70's to the 80's. Can't believe I forgot the Talking Heads. I think time creates a strange schizophrenia, with decadal dismorphia on one hand and blind nostalgia on the other. When one starts to comb through the details, not just an episode of "MTV's I love the xx's", it's hard not to notice that every decade and every year has all sorts of treasures in amongst the garbage.

The synth pop stuff like what you posted was pretty much done by the mid 80s. The hot trend was then hair metal bands and then rap and club music. By the late 80s it was pretty much a free-for-all, with no one style dominating the public's attention. One might argue in favor of the pre-packaged boy bands, because they got their start then, but it didn't seem to be a true musical fad until the early 90s.
As you point out, like any decade, it was highly varied. The heavily marketed stuff for the most part stank. But a lot of good stuff did come out of the 80's that folks don't necessarily associate with that decade:

A few examples of bands that came out of the 80's but people forget came from the 80's:
    Fishbone
    NWA
    Front 242
    Ministry
    Jane's Addiction
    Stone Roses
    Operation Ivy
    Fugazi

As well as some acts that very much represent the decade, but still have something to offer:
    Madonna
    Cyndi Lauper
    Metallica
    Michael Jackson
    Van Halen
    Public Enemy
    Smiths
    New Order
    Big Audio Dynamite
    Duran Duran
    LL Cool J
    Bow Wow Wow
    Sugarcubes
    Minor Threat

and those that worked before, through and after the decade:
    Siouxsie & the Banshees
    the Cure
    the Clash
    the Cramps
    Motorhead

So yeah, despite being the decade that gave us yacht rock, Huey Lewis and late career Dolly Parton duets, there was some decent stuff on the airwaves if you knew where to point your analogue radio dial.

Edit to add: and the Dead Kennedys fit somewhere into that mix. But they formed in '78 and broke up mid 80's--so not sure which list. And none of this touches the truly oddball stuff that was underground then and has remained underground since. From the De La Soul to the Dwarves, the decade did have a lot to offer.

Could be right. My interest and knowledge in the flow of contemporary comics (outside of some exceptional graphic novels and true life comics) has really waned in the past couple decades. Like heroes season 2 and beyond did for heroes season 1 for me--the 1990's pretty much destroyed everything I enjoyed about superhero comics.

I briefly dipped back in to check out some things like civil war and the marvel ultimate reboot. But the prices they are asking for books these days could not be justified. And as a much older grown up, all the cross overs and tie ins felt like blatant manipulations and money grabs. (They may have been back in the day as well, but I was too naive and hungry for the material to notice or care I suppose!)

  19. Funny thing is, here in NYC, the 1980's as inspiration for new fashion has pretty much already come and gone. Did so midway through last decade.

And now you have people like, IIRC, Keshia Knight Pulliam singing the praises of the transitional years of the early 1990s. In my 'hood, starting to see afro-punk give way to "daisy age" revival. And that's just a hop-skip-and-jump away from Deee Lite... (which in itself was all a twist on stuff from a particular part of the 1960's)

  21. Another FX heavy powerset suggestion for you. (yes, powers people would need to invent it, but FX dept would obviously play a big roll in realizing the awesomeness to make this set worth it):

Vermin Corruptors and Dominators Flies, bees, mosquitoes, bats, ravens, sparrows, jays, beetles, etc. All these creatures have distinct and unique enough swarming patterns. Obviously, character customization would need to be limited down to maybe a half dozen types of creatures, first for unique body types (bats vs. birds vs. bees). But it would be important that when someone selects bats for a particular swarming power, that the bats fly in and feel like bats, and that the birds feel not like bird models flying in the same path as the bats but instead flocking like birds would, etc. etc.

I've stuck to flying creatures for my suggestion.

Not sure how ants, roaches or rats would be made to work in terms of "believability" (if that even matters any more in a game like this!), but perhaps someone on your team could work out a way to make them work as well.

Similarly, I *guess* there might be room in a set like this if building from scratch to include a weird left field option of something like the pixels from the new pixel aura as another customization option.

Silver age is mostly 60's 70's. Reasonable arguments could say it starts sometime in the 50's. But either way, the silver age occurred when superheroes re-emerged as a focal genre for comics after crime, war, horror, western and romance comics had grown to dominate the medium in post war America. There was also a very distinct limited color palette throughout the silver age and offset plates were printed at a lower LPI resolution to limit spoilage. These factors could be credited as much as the era's fashion and mainstream culture for the distinct bold style of silver age hero and villain costumes.

This changed in the 80's as color separation technologies advanced, making photo separation increasingly affordable for the medium which was eventually replaced by photo-digital and 100% digital separation during the 90's. At the time, the 1980's was considered to harbor the second golden age of comics when these more detailed graphic styles, broader color palettes (heavy with subtle earth tones) became coupled with grittier revisionings of classic silver and golden age characters. The second golden age is more commonly referred to now as the diamond age and if I'm not mistaken also includes most of the 1990's.

The history is obviously more complex than this when one includes the rolling influence of underground comics that always seems to lag the mainstream comics by at least a decade. i.e. themes in underground comics in the 1960's not making their way into mainstream books till the 1970's. But that's a horse of a different color.

Short of it: silver age is definitely 1960's & 1970's.

I WILL say, however, that she should only use that aura every 28 days.
You're not alone. I tested the pack with a particular villain character I have--a survivor of horrible experiments with misguided cures for hemorrhagic fevers that left her with the ability to control and direct hemoglobin at will--both her own and others. So the drippy trail aura was a delight.

But when you see the heavy bleeding in action and the three points of emanation--not just the path it leaves behind, it's rather hard IMO for any adult with an informed knowledge of human biology to not "go there" even if momentarily.

To top it all off, this long existing villain of mine for whom the blood trail application seems made, is called Bloodlust.

    I know.

On topic: I'll finally be getting access back to my game later this weekend or early next week. I've got some tweaks to several characters--none really steampunk per se--but all using bits from the new pack. I'll post a few montages when I can.
  24. A certain upcoming movie about a corps of cosmic guardians lent a little inspiration. Not fully sure what it would look like or how it would function, but the game does lack any sort of "energy control"

I could see this overlapping with Tunnel Rat's expressed desire to work on a "light based set" with "angelic" features. As long as the powers accepted tinting as well as energy blast currently does, could be a quite adaptable set concept-wise.
