Soloing AVs back then wasn't quite unheard of, and even today the "pics or it didn't happen" mentality persists. It just wasn't as widespread as it currently is on the "Archetypes and Powers" section
Yeah.. ultimus was my original insperation. My first AV was sometime earlier in the mid-summer of '08, but I had no documentation. I killed a pylon before making my run, too. I didn't start my run until my build was completed and that took me 4-5 months of making money. (Ironically, my market-fu has improved to the point where that kind of money takes me about 2 weeks instead of 4-5 months).

I recall last August I put my planned build together, then started running my "ultimate chain" which was empower>sweeping strikes... unexplicably it wasn't acting the way it should... powers weren't recharging when they should... I began investigating and discovered something. I emailed Arcanaville asking if she knew about it (of course she did), and she explained to me she'd been putting together a guide describing the phenominon, and about a week later we were given "Arcanatime." At first I was upset because the build I'd planned 4-5 months earlier was incapable of the DPS I wanted.... But then I realized how Arcanatime could be 'abused' to get me an attack chain I would have never used without that information (BF>AS>SS>AS)... and the set that benifitted most from that principle was in fact Dual Blades... and lucky me, I already had the set and build I needed... just tweak it a bit and start killing.

PL'ing is pointless... but no more so then playing a computer game is pointless.

To some people the "game" is to find a way to get to max level as fast as possible. They go through great lenghths developing toons and arcs and plans to do so. That's fun for them. They deserve to play the game, too.

I do agree that finding a guy with a level 50 who doesn't know anything about enhancements makes me a little sad and upset because it should be a respectable accomplishment. Making level 50 a task that only involves showing up and joining the right team for one afternoon cheapens this game and that's something Dev's and the Long-term community caresabout. But you can say that without saying someone else's playstyle is wrong.
  5. Today, I'm sitting at a PC that I used to post a series of videos showing a scrapper named Shred Monkey soloing a most of the AVs in the game. By today's standard that's impressive and I try to congratulate anyone who achieves such a feat. But at that time it was almost unheard of. The majority of people I ran into both in game, and in the forums had a "video, or it didn't happen" attitude toward soloing AVs. This is why I made videos in the first place. I really don't want to bring attention to myself. Many others have since done things far more impressive. So much so that this forum has become the Mecca for anyone looking for good solid numbers advice on any AT.

But the reason for this post and what really amazed me is this. The file creation date on the first video I posted is 8/30/08! Just shy of a year ago!

Has it really only been 1 year since all this AV soloing craziness started!?!?

Only a community of hardcore scrappers could achieve so much in so little time. Hat's off. And thanks for the good times. I can't wait to see how far we raise the bar in the next year.

The links above can get you started on hunting down the details of attack mechanics and slotting.

By "soft cap" they're refering to 45% defense. This is a critical number because of the way the tohit calculation works. Essentually with no defense a minion will hit you with 50% of it's attacks. If you have 30% defense, it's (50-30)=20% of it's attacks. at 45% you hit a 'soft cap.' This is because the game won't let the base tohit of any attack go below 5%. (50% tohit -45% defense) = 5%.

There's an accuracy modifier that gets applied after the tohit is calculated. For bosses it's 1.5. So at the soft cap they actually hit at 5% x 1.5= 7.5% chance. Some attacks also get a bonus to accuracy also that could boost the lowest possible tohit chance, but regardless of the accuacy modifier, 45% defense will put you at the minimum chance to hit from any target. This is why it's called the soft cap. It's not a hard cap, because you can boost defense to I believe 200%. It's just not doing anything.

  8. Slax helped me out last night. Thanks man.
  9. if you click on your combat tab and scroll back to see the attacks, it shows the hitrolls... shows what they rolled and what they needed to roll to hit. That'll tell you the % chance they have of hitting on each attack. Many AVs have over 7.5% with thier attacks due to increased accuracy on certain or all attacks. If I remember right, Battle Maiden is 9% on all her sword attacks.
  10. I was going to make a claws/wp brute in I16... but then i couldn't wait and made a scrapper... and then I realized I really wanted to do a brute because the red side content is still new to me... (despite my 5 year vet badge)... so I made an energy/wp brute (with GIANT MECHANICAL ARMS.)

um... let see.. you're questions was... uh... yeah, the brute has more hp and more damage potential then the scrapper.

Kahn TF isn't bad. Almost every mission can be done "the fAst way." I've tanked for one run with only 6 people (on my scrapper) and we still finished in 55 min. I'm pretty sure some of the runs I've done with slax tanking were in the 30s. The last fight is long, but I've done stupider things that took a lot longer... it's a matter of perspective.

I wish they wouldn't put so many caves in these TFs. My steering skills are weak.

Rieze: I went Mu Mastery because CP is awesome for protracted fights, even with AM up most of the time. I'll be burning a lot of endurance running my toggles and attacking. Soul Drain is awesome, but with the corr/dom/defender recharge on it you're at best gonna have it up half the time because of its 30sec duration and 240sec recharge. It's also a PBAoE buff, a place I have no intention of being fighting AVs and GMs
But if you're soft cap'd.. you don't need that expensive toggle running.

yeah.. what you need to do is drop mutation for superspeed and add 2 more zephyrs there... slot out boxing with a full mako's set.

steal from stamina, conserve power and charged armor.

I'm working on a softcapped /WP brute atm. (energy for attack... was going claws, but I couldn't wait). The thing that has him holding my interest is his GIANT MECHANICAL ARMS... RAWR.

He'll easily be the most survivable toon I have when done... more tank then scrapper... but still GIANT MECHANICAL ARMS are fun.

Anyhow on my teams I just get whoever's available. Last Synapse I ran we had 1 tanker and 5 scrappers, and I don't recall anybody dying a lot.

Don't start making me sound like a nice guy. This is the scrapper forum. *punches a wall*
  17. that's odd... the first thing I do with a build after hitting the soft cap is figure out how to get over 200 DPS (blasters I aim a bit higher)... if I can't... I try something else.

BTW Billz, I don't have my spreadsheet up yet.... but if I remember right I believe FU, Slash, Focus, strike, slash, Focus does better DPS then FU Slash Focus Evicerate when procs are added... and it doesn't need hasten.

Another AV killing scrapper on infinity... by now you'd think they'd know to just lay down when a scrapper shows up. Nice work.

Actually, I'd argue that you can add enough damage to beat the defense build... *IF* your test is the "normal" playstyle of teaming and playing normal content. This is because the blaster without the defense wins every efficiency comparison every time that he isn't laying on the floor or running back from the hostpital. As long as he has 1 hit point, he's more effective then the guy with all the defense and less offense. On most teams, I don't see people laying on the floor for even 5% of thier playtime.

It is the fact that we (the scrapper forum) prefer to test our builds to failure that gives the guy built for mitigation the advantage. If you measure time to complete a TF or even inf/hour (both things that are commonly maximized in this game) you don't always choose the +defense build... in fact you may not even pick a scrapper.

But yes... defense wins our scrapper forum stress tests everytime given the current IOs, which leaves /SR behind due to the ability to hit the soft cap with other builds.

I agree, but again, that same blaster is not doing as much damage as the blaster with the same powersets who when with full recharge instead of ranged defense.

Yes... that is a problem. I like that we can make sacrifices to our build to max out defense. I wish we had other alternatives besides defense (and recharge to some extent) to "uberize" our toons, but currently the IOs don't exist or they are underperforming. For example if there were more ways to boost, regen, resists, status effects, hitpoints, procs (wouldn't that be fun)... etc, you could take an /SR and crank up his resists and hp to make him equal to the IO'd shield toon in stats.
  22. Welcome to the game.... DM/Fire is a fine choice... you can go as far as you want with great success. Some of the discussions we have here in this forums that comparing powersets and builds at high high end scenarios are very unrepresentative of the game in general. Frequently, we're literally talking about the difference between being able to solo or not solo less then 10 NPCs in the whole game.

Good luck and have fun. Come back and share your expriences. We love hearing about someone else falling in love with the game for the first time.

While I too share this concern, keep in mind.. if I sacrifice AoE damage and ST damage to become unkillable... the guy with the same 2 powersets standing next to me who didn't make those sacrifices is out performing my toon anytime he's not face down.
