  1. The advantage of Backspace is that it actually creates a /tell to the last person to send you tell themselves. This means that if you it Backspace immediately, it will create a tell to that person.

/r sends a reply to the most recent person to send you a tell at the instant you hit the Return key. This means that if someone else sends you a tell while you are typing your reply, you will send it to the wrong person.

I'm inclined to agree - I just wanted to point out that sometimes when people say they can't commit to TF's, there can be a good reason.

So, having told my own sob-story, I have to say that I think 19.5 is fantastic. I love it. I suspect that it will revitalise (again) interest in running TF's, teaming in general, and get people once again interested in pulling their 50s out of retirement to grab the new shinies.

    It's looking good.

I guess it would require you to be able to stay logged in and enter missions etc but that could be worked around.
Squire that is one SERIOUSLY generous offer, and one that a) I appreciate no end and b) will CERTAINLY take you up on.

I'm certain that a workaround can be achieved regarding moving mission-to-mission and whatnot, if necessary (advantages: a truly understanding wife; a laptop that I can cart around the house; a solid wifi connection). I have never wanted to be dead-weight on a team, particularly for something as important (to me, let alone others) as the commitment to a TF - my rule so far has always been "if I put my name down, I'm doing it, 100%"

I really can't thank you enough for the offer.

In sympathy for the people who claim to not be able to find the time to do a TF - until 6 weeks ago, I could spend several hours a day in-game, and was able to commit to a TF at the drop of a hat. Now, I have a 6-week-old baby to look after in the evenings, so that his mother can get some sleep, and at weekends we share as much of the time with him as possible, so right now, just when the Incarnate stuff is kicking into second gear, I absolutely cannot commit to more than five minutes (sure, sometimes longer, but I don't make that decision, my son does) at a single task. While I know this will change as time goes on and he settles, his birth has effectively removed me from TFing or playing the game in any way that's not entirely at my own pace. Translation: I need to solo to get things done.

I don't care about it taking more work in the long run, I don't care if it takes five times as long, but I want to be able to access Rare and Very Rare levels of power on my main toon, and until or unless there is a solo option for achieving this, I simply cannot do it. No ifs, no buts. Cannot.

To put this in perspective - my main toon has managed to squeeze out three Uncommon Alpha Boosts, two of them since my son was born. Mostly by soloing.
  5. *bows*

Thank you, seebs, for that absolutely spot-on representation of a guide for normal people playing this game.

I doff my hat to you, sir.
  6. Must admit, I really hate people posting incorrect info on the tech boards. I run CoH on a desktop running Win7-64 and on a laptop running Win7-64 and I have experienced no problems whatsoever with either of them.
  7. Welcome to Onion!

Many, many, many RPers about. As mentioned, join the Union Roleplayers chat channel (in-game command /chan_join "Union Roleplayers"), and take a look at the Roleplaying forum.

There are public RP meets (notably 9pm at the Galaxy Girl statue in Galaxy City and almost any time in Pocket D, but it picks up from about 8pm), and new people are always welcome, but I would VERY strongly suggest taking a look at the Hints, Tips and Tricks for New Roleplayers thread, even if you've RP'd (online or not) before.

As well as those regular (nightly) meets, there are a large number of RP groups that you can find elsewhere in-game - the best suggestion I can make is to introduce yourself on Union RPers and ask what people are up to.

I'm an unrepentant Galaxy Girl regular (though my time there has been severely curtailed recently, due to Real Life), on most nights (except Wednesdays), and can be contacted on my global @Shadowe if you have any questions, want to curse me out, want some advice, or just can't seem to find me, and please, please, please, remember the following:

The regular RP meets can sometimes seem very cliquish and unwelcoming. This is NOT true. IC, the characters have lives and may be continuing a conversation that they've been having for 3 weeks, and it can be hard to introduce a new character into that sort of situation. I would suggest two things: Persevere and tell people.

Persevere: Don't give up. We do, in fact, love new RPers and characters. Don't let the first apparent hurdle put you off.

Tell People: If your toon is standing off to one side saying nothing, none of us know that you want to get involved. Mention it OOC on Union Roleplayers, or using OOC tags in local chat. We will work with you to get your toon involved, if we can.
  8. Wow. Awesomesauce.

In case anyone doesn't guess, I'm not in EERC, and right now my out-of-game commitments would prevent me from taking an active role, anyway, but I just wanted to applaud the posters above me for taking such a positive step, and to the CoH Community Coordinators for paying attention to this little sub-continent on the other side of the Atlantic.

I look forward to seeing and hearing about events (I'm afraid I have no thoughts right now, so this is pretty much a mild threadjack) and participating as and when I am able.

Interesting point, here, and hotly discussed on the RP board a while ago:

There is actually no such thing as a "Hero license", according to the lore of the game.

There is registration under the CCFA, whereby a civilian informs the state of an intention to undertake state-sanctioned police actions against criminals, following law-enforcement procedures, and thus unable to be personally held responsible by the criminals for those lawful actions, and the hero gets a little card that says "I registered, My Name is Underpants Man" or whatever, but there is no testing, no licensing process. Presumably, any civilian may choose to thus register.

Edit: (I will point out now that I was one of the crowd who thought there actually was a license, and tried to argue it. We failed, because the lore is remarkably clear, never using the term "Hero License" but clearly using "Hero Registration" or "FBSA Registration".)
  10. Important note: The O-portal is tagged as a Temporary Power for some utterly unknown reason (it really should be inherent, if you ask me, but I'm sure there's a good reason), so it might not be where you're expecting it to be in your power listings.
  11. To quote Coupling (UK tv series, not the American version which I've never seen):

"It's the four pillars of the male heterosexual psyche: Stockings, naked women, lesbians, and Sean Connery best as James Bond."

Thank you the words of wisdom, Steven Moffatt.
  12. Kindly excuse the mild snark in this reply:

How many slots do you gain at level 2?
  13. WAI.

Essentially what Diggis said, but here's another way to look at it:

You respec a toon, it says "Ooh, a Level 0 toon. Please select your level 1 powers. Thanks. Ooh, a level 1 toon with enough XP to be level 2, you are currently level 1, please select your level 2 power. Thanks. Ooh, a level 3 toon with enough XP to be level 4, you are currently level 3, please select your level 4 power." And it carries on until you are no longer a Level X toon with enough XP to be level X+1.

Then it lets you set your slots.
  14. Speaking of open doors, don't I vaguely remember them fixing the trains so that you could click on the doors while they are open? That alteration seems to have vanished in an intermediate build somewhere.

As for opinions. It's generally a lost cause to persuade someone else that your opinion should be their opinion, so why even bother? To each his own.
Because it's a mainstay of relationship RP? I think it'd be quite boring if everyone either agreed with one another or didn't attempt to sway the feelings of others.

As long as it isn't taken overboard, that is. [Guilty as charged]

    X2 XP weekend

Fear not AJ. There will be more. Oh, yes. There will be more. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon...

    Okay, I'll shut up, now.
  17. Last Christmas ('09) I was hanging out RPing in the ski chalet on Union one night, and someone randomly dropped a Pangean Soil on my main as a Christmas gift. Now, my main doesn't exactly need inf (though if anyone wants to give me some, feel free!) and I had no need of that salvage at that time (my standing policy is to only hang onto salvage if I have a recipe that needs it), so I made myself a promise:

"I'm going to hang onto this Pangean Soil until I next meet a newbie that's not on a trial account. That newbie gets it."

(The trial account thing was because, let's be honest, that salvage would be totally wasted on one).

Over the next month, I met a fair number of newbies, but it seemed that all of them were on trials, so I just topped off their inf reserves to the trial account limit. And then, finally, I met a newbie who had the full game. So I gave it to him, with a brief explanation that it was worth a few million inf if he sold it at the AH, or he could save it for when he got to a higher level and needed to use it for a recipe.

He offered me inf in return, and I just said "That piece of salvage cost me nothing. Not even time. I didn't earn it. I don't need it. So I'm giving it to you, just to say hi, and welcome to City of Heroes."
  18. I have two accounts and... I don't use either for storage at all.

On any given character, I keep up to X+1 pieces of a given type of salvage where X = the number of recipes in my inventory that use it. I sell unwanted recipes first, for 5 inf (even purples), then clear down my salvage. Common and Uncommon at 300, Rare at 5,555. Failure to sell results in something becoming vendor bait when I run out of room on the AH.

  20. Not really a lot for me to add, other than good luck in all your future endeavours, I hope your next job is as rewarding as I hope this one has been, and yeah, we're really going to miss you on these boards.

    Take care.

  21. The most powerful weapons RPers have against tools are "ignore as spammer" for whatever rubbish they're spouting in chat and /petition for power griefing, collision-box griefing and whatever else they manage to come up with this year to try and annoy us.

On your other points, Floaty, I'd tend to agree, in general, though the "groupies" one is the price we pay to be inclusive. Irritating, but welcome, to me. Now, I'd love it if there were something like an RP-instance of Pocket D during the winter event, with some sort of "three-strikes" rule, but that would be highly open to abuse any which way, so we just have to make do, welcome the "casual-good" RPers, wince at the "casual-bad" and try to educate them a little on 'realism' (more correctly 'suitable levels of unrealism'), ignore the tools, and attempt a bit of cross-group RP - that's the great strength of the chalet as a venue, IMO. A lot of people are drawn there for RP, and it allows interaction in a controlled environment between characters who wouldn't normally ever cross paths.

    A New Sidekick

Oh, he has a name, but he's already let it be known that he wants to maintain a secret identity, so for now the world shall know him as Baby Shad (at least until, like Dick Grayson, he decides on a proper superhero name for himself).

    A New Sidekick

Just wanted to let people know that at 3.51 GMT today, Pix and I had a baby boy.

Unfortunately, Pix said I wasn't allowed to get him his own CoH account from birth, so it'll be a little while before anybody meets him.
  24. Here's the question I tend to ask myself if I'm struggling between the Tech/Science/Mutant/Natural Origins:

What do you have to remove from the character to stop them having powers?

Is it a gadget of some kind? Start thinking Tech.
Is it their spontaneously altered DNA? Well, sir, we have probably have a mutant.
Is it something that has been artificially added to their body by an irreversible process? Could be science.
Or is the only way to remove their powers or prevent their powers from ever having manifested to have never had them "born"? I'm probably looking at a Natural toon.

So, for me, the answer to your question is this: Natural or Science.
