LORE BASED RP. You do know who Bentley Berkeley is for example right? No not my character, which he isnt, he is my role, when an actor is chosen to play say new kirk for example, he is no more or less then the other actor to portray the character( for the purpose of the anaology)

Sometimes actors can even have interesting insights into thier roles and use them to expand the character further then even the original writer who created it imagined. That is the only reason I have for my characters.

The original post isnt about an RP plot played out by a group, its just like many other theories on how or why we could bring back statesman using the new ritual from the holiday event.

Ill try and point to how I am using in game lore and content to create a viable idea that just like now few others suggested, offers a way to bring back marcus cole who not all are happy to see fall, at least not yet nor so quietly.

With the new holiday event we have a ritual and the requirements pretty clearly spelled out. Some suggest why cant this work for all. Some say well statesman is alot more then just some crazy lady and would take bigger magic.

I replace the generic coins with the 2 used for an ancient incarnate that yes I personally have long imagined Ol **** dates back to cimorea, and yes have long imagined as having some connection to the oracle since I chose for him to bea psi/ment blaster.

I listed a number of lore characters, and a few names of characters I play or know played all based on lore involving the very subjects being used in the comic series quite alot. Its not about my ego when I suggest those names but simple logic. Ive seen others suggest roughly the same using more main stream names, but imo **** is a bigger wiz then younglings like numina, he is just alot more humble and out of the spot light.

Other things I make reference to are the remains of tielekuu, seen in the cim section of the club, I make use of vlamaz because its a simple fact demons deal in the stuff of life that is magical, who else makes more sense to know before mention of the ritual that states own final breath might be handy?

Its not hard to imagine that an immortals blood, and last breath would likely carry some bigger boosts to a ritual then a typical person. Could you imagine a blood mage having a stock pile of Highlanders blood? People go on about how much they wanted a selfless and heroic sacrifice for statesman, why not a really old human who makes states seem young, who knew the last incarnate, maybe even was given a prophecy back then about states and his hour of need. Why not kill off a background character from lore who was always left in the dust anyways like Berkeley and let marcus cole have a chance at a final normal lifetime without power and responsability but who could still act as a NPC in some minor way, perhaps the new city rep in RP? so he wouldnt over shadow our own characters, but niether be removed so casually as to have no few players feeling like the face of thier game just got hit with acid then beat with an ugly stick.

again lore based RP isnt even about just RP its about being an immerssive part of the game even solo, even ona non rp pug, your trying to add an extra layer of depth for those around you.

  2. The thing is.

DR isn't forcing it on us or acting like DV is.

DV is acting like some pompous kid who thinks his fan canon is the best and thinks he has any right to manipulate lore/canon to HIS needs/desires.
  3. Good fan canon that makes sense and is well written.

Like DarkRespite's Nerd Romance story (Positron x her own character)

His (DV's) is bad fan canon.

Not one thing god mode about my concept characters I have seen far more so called original concept characters who border on god mode then my lore based characters based on research of the game and a desire to actually be a part of the game world we love.

A 'valid' version that featured your canon god-moding character as the main centre of attention, you mean? A version that any Dev writer would likely, with good reason, laugh right out of the office?

Really and why would they laugh at a story using all thier own content in an imaginative way? I may be rusty and wasnt there but I seem to recall devs having so much love for us players they even hosted an in game wedding for a pair. Yes I made a character named Bentley Berkeley directly inspired by the npc hostage from two old story arc missions who in game lore has just enough interesting tidbits about him I felt compelled to try and breathe some further life into him. Sorry if that hurts your feelings so much bud.

...How many Canon based NPCs have you 'spiced up' and god-moded, exactly? Do you even have any idea of what you are doing, or are you genuinely convinced what you are doing is somehow 'right'?
Or have I just been very successfully trolled? I would almost rather it were the latter.

I have an entire SG devoted to Crey with every character I and anyone else running in it drawn from game lore based on crey, starting with my character count alphonse crey aka the invisble falcon who many wrongly beleive was murdered by crey. Crey ofcourse in our RP view is the most noble and heroic organization on earth and Statesman a tyrant in the making we have long fought to disrupt the rise of.

Fecking hell, I am NEVER going on Virtue, if that's where you spend your days...

A true shame Id be happy to have you come meet any of my characters so you could at least judge them based on personal knowledge but to each thier own. And yes I am Virtue Forever as most of us who RP there are. Not like we all get along, hell I hate them damn WOD vamps beyond all reason. Maybe thats just what I am to you, your WOD vamp. If so again sorry bud but sometimes thats just the way it is.
You RP on Virtue but you represent the bad roleplayers of Virtue.

Count Alphonse Crey is in a COMA. A FEFFING COMA. He is in NO CONDITION to be running amok the city.

The hosted wedding? Two CANON characters that are NOT played by some 12 year old with some godmodding fantasy to be a big name.

City of Heroes's lore was NOT created just for fething idiots like you to come in and RUIN IT with your horrid fan canon. If you RPed within a close knit circle of friends and kept the fan canon off the forums? This sort of thing wouldn't happen, just saying.

If you want to be a part of the game? BE ORIGINAL.

The Devs love us, yes. But they love the SUBSCRIBERS, not us as Roleplayers. They look to make the PAYING SUBSCRIBERS happy with content. Yes, a number of the subscribers are roleplayers. But the Devs look to keep us in the game with content.

Some of them may like the RPers, but they didn't exactly go about saying 'Hey, go **** with the CoH's lore!'.

It is people like you, DV, that make me lose hope for humanity.

I do love it when the ignorant try to decry my character as a godmod. Let me count how they are not.

T'Keron Valmaz is yes the Lord Of Demons, frankly put when after 3 months in year one of seeing tons of really poorly concieved non canon related demons, devils, fallen angels, and half breeds running around I was like know what I am going to make a proper Demon character to RP just to try and spread some Lore. I did some research, naturally it always circled back to the CoT and Infernal. I came to see the very concept of T'Keron Valmaz as exactly the kind of concept so many where trying....and utterly failing at, creating let alone RPing.

He was the most powerful of his kind, now suddenly shackled with aspects of humanity, morality for example, emotions like guilt and doubt suddenly plagued a mind so ancient and complex it would be a truly worthy challenge to try and RP. I ended up drawing mainly upon inspiration from the Xanth saga by piers anthony and the Demon Xanth. A being who simply put saw our world as a speck of sand in the bigger picture, but wasnt so disconnected as to not recognize the impact Powers from even a single dimension could have. It takes little logic to assume it would of been Valmaz who made the first pacts with Orenbega to arm them with power ancient enough to match Tielekku the God.

I actually see as in IRL view point valmaz and not tielekku as the first and most important hero in COX lore. Had he not stood on our behalf game over right there, tielekku enslaves humanity, nothing left but a world of her zealots. So I try to give such a figure life, to use it to educate my fellow players on the actual game world they are playing in rather then using some generic Im a evil monster cus Im a demon tripe. In my book a demon of the caste of Valmaz is the icon of the moustache twirling to cool to have to kill villain with a secret heart of gold Benevloent dictator type. And really considering what you can guess of my RL personality isnt that the absolutely perfect kind of character for me to RP? I mean come on would you want anyone but an egotistical in game lore junkie to try and play such a character? Someone would have eventually used that name if I hadnt and could of easily been one of those Emo drama queens rather then a guy who just likes to sit at the D talking about moments in game lore history as if they where moments that actually meant something to me.

Really though just know if you truly love the game like me then I am not really any different from you no matter how you want to try and seperate yourself.

Side note: WoWtard more or less means someone whose first MMO is a wow type, or worse wow itself, and that you put more energy into the numbers aspect of building a character then the story concept. Pretty much as long as you always put the concept first, no matter your reason your not a WoWtard.

But it is spreading and rampantly. I meet more and more on virtue, on sarlona in DDO, pretty much every last haven for mmoRPGers is slowly being enroached on by people finally leaving WoW or AoC or very likely soon a mass exodus from ToR once they cap each class once and relize that is the exact depth of the content. Like any natural creature in existance, slowly we lose the enviroment originally made for our kind to those who would steralize it in a realm of perfect min max meta gamed optimal play/build/team composition.

I am a Sith Lord so please keep feeding me all those yummy negative emotions.

Oh and Han didnt shoot first nor 2nd. He was the ONLY shot! Han is also probably the only one bad *** enough to have taken shots at Vader and lived

Since it wasnt an open RP forum story or anything I figured general discussion was as viable a spot to place it as the RP section. Pardon me if that is just so offensive to the non RPers.

The contempt some feel for Lore Based RP is nothing new, nor is Lore RPing. Just about all the good names and concepts where scooped up in year one, least those connected with early content from Dauntless to Atlas with an i for the L. The desire for myself and the vast majority who choose to run characters like this is simply to be more integrated into the games plots. Why some take such offence to this I never really do understand.

Maybe we are arrogent though in that we do hope that Devs really do play this game as fellow players often, we hope they may be among us on occasion and take note of the affection thier players have for the story of the world they have created. Maybe we even hope some of what we do is taken notice enough to inspire the Devs in turn and give them story ideas easy to weave into the current game world.

Sure BB is my character on virtue, I know from attempts others must have used the name on a few other servers at least so its not like its a magically difficult name to get an idea for a character from. I mean he is one of the few immortals in COX lore and a magician who helped to found the midnighters. Outside of a few very old story arcs where he is used as a npc hostage he is a forgotten and oft unsung hero imo. My only intent when running him has ever been to help other newer players to understand simple ways to improve the quality of thier play time or run quick TFs where all are welcomed if of the min lvl range and up for a smooth painless run.

And ofcourse my rp is my little world still I mean is that news that pretty much every RPer has a unique view of how they explain the world. Nothing at all wrong with tieing yourself to an occasional bit of content. Most I know rarely get into an argument about a given moment, most just stay flexible and let whoever mentions one first in a given topic rights to it.

Sure we dont all need to be the guy who ran the posi, or the lgtf etc but some of us had to, if your chatting with a stranger who maybe for the first time ever ran a tf and it was fun and he is just itching to talk about it from an IC perspective, are you going to shout them down for talking like it was them who helped synapse stop the clockwork king?

As always nowhere did I ever attempt to imply I was some end all be all, nor did I only include names of concept characters I run. I simply offered up a view using game lore fueled ideas and characters. Characters that would in the lore be among the most logical to be the actual canon heroes confronting wade. Even the Lord of Demons fused with a human and exiled to primal earth would have great reason and power to intercede on humanities behalf just as he did to save earth from Tielekku so long ago.

If you can look past your needless hate for a fellow fan of the game we all play for a moment just follow the basic plot outline.

A group of midnighters lead by Bentley Berkeley thier oldest living member and almost certainly the teacher to people like Wade, confronts him. Wade is after all clearly following the Path of The Dark, the cult of Rularuu, and in lore the group Berkeley has been keeping earth safe from for who know's how long.

They are allied with one of the most mysterious and shadowy figures of coh lore where magic is concerned to gather the means and knowledge to attempt to stop Wade, but are to late to save statesman.

Using the alignment arcs BB confronts his evil future self, then going red side aquires the flames of prometheus, well known to be able to rekindle power. Combined with a variant of our newly learned ritual of ressurection, and fueled by the selfless sacrifice of an immortal long weary of watching those he has known grow old and die, he gives life to the young icon that is marcus cole, now free of the will of the well, to be the hero the world needs.

Hell ill go delete my characters named that IOs and all if it will chill you sour pusses out and take it for the light hearted fun it was intended to be.

I guess its true what they say, cox is really going to the wowtards these days who can only see numbers, cookie cutter builds, and spew hate on anyone who actually likes the game enough to be a part of it.
    No.

    No.

None of us are WoWTards. We're respectable people who aren't taking this game's lore into our own demented hands. We're adjusting our characters to it, not adjusting it to us.

Your characters are -NOTHING- compared to the big guns (Well, technically? We're now more powerful then the FP and all them). You are just another hero or villain to the plenty out there.

You play canon named characters? Cool. I've seen a Vambrace and a Maiden Justice who could just blow your demented head out of the water with how well they were played and how they adjusted the characters to the lore, not the lore to them.

Statesman is DEAD. D-E-A-D. NO ONE can change that until the Devs say otherwise. You can write whatever twisted story you want, but in all lore rights? Marcus Cole of Primal Earth is dead as ever.

There is NOTHING called Lore RP. Its just a sad excuse for people like you to twist a world that is not yours to some messed up fantasy.

    This.

I can't really say much except that I agree with Ardea.

It is a game about superheroes, aliens, gods, and more.

Accuracy and realism went out the damn window the day they came up with this game.

    You know this how?

As to the rest of your 'tips'.

If you were private with who you roleplayed with, I could see no problems.

Bentley is either a long living man or an immortal -- So he knows Dauntless and Galaxy Girl /shrug.

    But!

Here is my view on where you may be going 'wrong'. (NOTE: I am not trying to shove anything down throats)

The lore is out there for us to immerse ourselves in, yes. But we can't become a part of the lore unless the people behind the lore, Paragon Studios in this case, put us in there. Example: The Freedom Phalanx contest they will be holding soon will put ONE character into official lore/canon.

Taking a known lore/historical character and trying to make it your own goes against being a good roleplayer. A good roleplayer is supposed to be creative and imaginative, being able to create things from scratch...or at least, that is my view. Taking a lore character, and this is an example, like Captain Mako and saying your character is married to him is as bad as trying to play Alphonse Crey who is still in a coma.

Unless the lore actually BELONGS to us, which it doesn't, we have little reign on what we can do with it. Now, a good example of people using the lore right is giving mention or saying that...Manticore is your character's inspiration to be a hero. Using them in an indirect but good manner such as the example given is okay.

Playing them when it makes no sense for them to be around? In my own horrid opinion? That is not exactly something a roleplayer would do unless they were novice or RPed only with a select few people who had their own continuity.

Edit: Crey has been proven MANY times to not be heroes at all. Hero arcs later on and villain arcs too delve into just what Crey really is.
  11. Yeah, I've got a few more in my head and I'll be taking what I learned from this event and apply it to the next ones I run.

As another note, we had some fantastic turn outs for the costume contests. Once I have all the winner's names from my chatlog, I'll post them here.

What I do remember was the Image to the Unseen winners.

    Queen Comet: Star-Witch
    Vambrace: Darenix
    Dream Doctor: American Safeguard
    Maiden Justice: La Baronesa

We had no Elementar or Wavelength, unfortunately.

We had 2 Dream Doctors, 3 Vambraces, and 2 Queen Comets. Was an interesting turn-out to say the least.
  12. I'm sorry, Xzero :/ I had logged to Shade pretty much by then.

I should of stayed on Warlocke to make sure late-comers could join.
  13. Only a hour and a half (1 hour and 30 minutes :P) left until the RP Event begins!
  14. Shush you. Details aren't needed :P. All people need to know is that we fixed the problem.
  15. I'm in.

-- I'm holding something actually that relates to DA >.>

    Links in my sig.
  16. EDIT: Problem fixed after a nice chat.
  17. INTRODUCTIONHello, Virtue! As you may or may not know, I am Shadeknight / Dr. Warlocke and for a while, I've been wanting to do something like this. What is 'this', you ask? A two-part event in which roleplayers can come together in Part 1 and the server can come together in Part II. The first part is a RP event relating, in a tiny manner, to my supergroup's first and current story arc: Imperfect Greed. However, it also relates to Issue 22: Death Incarnate and will tie into it throughout the first part of the event.

The second part of the event is a 2 billion influence give away in Kings Row! The give away is in the fashion of four costume contests, three of them being themed. Each contest will have ten minute breaks in-between so that people can get their themed costume or whip up one within ten minutes. During the ten minute breaks, there will quite possibly be trivia or door prizes, but no promises at this time.

EDIT: Because I am a magnet for trouble -- http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=282623 Please go here to see why I am hosting the first part.
So, without further ado? I present to you the event details.

    IN-CHARACTER

WHO: Heroes / Vigilantes / Rogues (Like they'll care )
    WHAT: Aid to Dark Astoria!
WHEN: Feburary 4th -- This portion begins at 7PM CST / 8 PM EST
WHERE: Dark Astoria -- Meet right inside

Something stirs within Dark Astoria and its effects have begun to seep through to the world. Dark whispers across Paragon are driving numbers of people into hopelessness and also drawing some to Dark Astoria. Meanwhile, there have been some in the mystical community that have felt a great darkness rising in Astoria, one that could threaten the entire world. One mystic is Dr. Warlocke, current leader of Silver Aegis. Together with the Aegis, he has sent a call out to all those willing to join him in delving into the fog of Astoria to find more information about what slumbers there.

A small event just to give some lead into what comes.

    OUT-OF-CHARACTER

WHO: Heroes / Vigilantes / Rogues
    WHAT: Four Costume Contests!
WHEN: The first begins at 8:30PM CST / 9:30PM EST.
WHERE: King's Row -- Police Department area. Be on the look out for Silver Aegis members.

In King's Row, we will be holding four costume contests to give out 2 billion inf and possibly more over that in IOs (No promises, I'm afraid. My luck is **** on Random Recipe Rolls )

    * First Contest: Golden / Silver Age
Two themes that are related are in the same contest. I am looking for the kind of costume you'd see on heroes in the Marvel and DC 'verses. Now, if you copy Marvel/DC? I won't bother. I'm asking for originality here and its quite easy to get this theme done right. But as noted, I want to see YOUR Golden/Silver Age costumes.

    * Second Contest: Giving Image to the Unseen
This is the first time I am willing to try such a thing within the game. In this game's history, there are plenty of names that were big during their time that don't have official costumes that could possibly have them and look pretty cool. So, I would like to see members of this community come out with their own designs for the following heroes / heroines!

    1.) Maiden Justice
    2.) Elementar
3.) Vambrace (The suit of armor, rather.)
    4.) Queen Comet
    5.) Wavelength
6.) Dream Doctor -- For those who have done I22 Beta, I know he has a look on there, but this is live not Beta

Get as original with the pieces you have access to as possible, is all I can end with.

    * Third Contest: Mystical / Supernatural
Wizards, warlocks, demons, and more! If it fits within the right of mystical or supernatural? This is the contest for you! If you are unsure if it will fit to this theme, do know that I will do my best to help figure it out .

    * Fourth Contest: Overall
The general no themed costume contest. Bring your best costume that is original! Simple as that, yes?
  18. *Name: Silver Aegis

*Currently Recruiting: We are on a limited recruitment -- Looking for characters that meet the theme and can fit to a certain archetype of hero (Read more below)

RP Level: Moderate to Heavy RP // SG Chat is IC, Coalition is IC. Global channel for OOC.
    PvP Level: Optional

    *Theme/Concept: Justice League / Avengers-esque Golden/Silver/Bronze Age team of heroes & vigilantes

*Activity: New, so activity has been limited to me so far.

    Requirements for Membership:
    * Golden / Silver / Bronze Age costume
    * Fitting name for the theme (Obviously )
    * Iconic / Fits an 'Archetype'. See http://averagejoeblogger.blogspot.co...rchetypes.html for more information on the current archetypes we're seeking. You may also contact me or use google to get other superhero archetypes that would be acceptable.

    *Leadership: Shadeknight & Dr. Warlocke

    *In-Game Contact(s): @Shadeknight

    *Out-of-Game Contact(s): ShadowWings

    URL: Working on it

    Coalition(s): N/A - Seeking, though!

Other Details: N/A - May be updated later
  19. Its a open channel, so anyone can join without the need for invite. /shrug
  20. Hopefully this channel gets filled and gets used a lot for the intent it was made. It would be sad to see it end up like the other channels.
  21. Ignore this, I derped and read the patch notes wrong.
  22. Then go ahead and fight against Xanatos, Vinnie, and Renegade.

One at a time of course.

Unless your e-peen is so big that you think you can take them all on at once.
