    Part 4: Builds?

    Intro:
The Various Dark/ /Dark 's in this game hold a special place in my heart, my very first charactor I made after purchasing City of Villains nearly 4 years ago was a Dark/Dark Miasma Corruptor. Ever since I have been in love with the various dark sets and the twists the AT's put on them. There has not been very many Dark guides writen, its never been a real FoTM (I'm actually sort of happy about that...) so I decided to write as best of a comprehensive guide to all the Dark Primaries and secondaries along with a few extra things tossed in. Lets jump right into it!
    How to read:
The guide is broken up into 6 Parts, one for each of the Primaries and secondaries.
Each Section has a overview that lists out the powers, the order the come in, what effects they have, values, recommended sets and slotting, etc. After that is a break down on how that particilar Primary or secondary works in the AT. The only exception is Necromancy which can only be found in Masterminds.
The guide itself is based on my personal experience and accumilated knowledge gained by participating in discussions on the sets. This is no set in stone end all "YOU MUST DO IT THIS WAY OR UR DOIN IT RONG" type guide as I beleive that is for space nazi's. Take everything said here however you like. If I make a mistake regarding numbers just let me know or if you have something to add on feel free!

It doesn't really matter to me what the "point" of Sk'ing is, because that's just how I feel about it.
    >_> well...Sorry man, the system works well the way it does and when i16 hits you WILL be sk'd wether you like it or not ((unless you're the team leader/mission owner)). Also AE farms are going to be cut down drasticly come i16

Now there is alway a huge thing with tar patch and tentacles, some people love love love tar patch, but honestly if you have tentacles(the biggest aoe hold in the game unless they recently nerfed it) you don't really need tar patch. Yeah its great but a d4 should have a fear and have tentacles so u dont need neccessarily tar patch.

also when using tentacles target the far back center because it is a cone attack
You are DEAD wrong sir. Placing a tar patch before TT makes mobs far easier to bunch up if used properly (like I previously mentioned, puting it at the far edge of a mob, it will litterally make them line up to be shot to death especially by TT)). The -resistance in Tar patch makes up for the fairly ((lets be honest)) meh damage of /dark blast. Another thing is you can't safely corner pull with tenticles.

As for putting heal on auto...Thats just a bad idea. You might accidently draw agro on yourself while placing your cones, etc. Also, even with good slotting your looking at it chewing up 5 end when it goes off and it will take a solid 4-5 Seconds to recharge. If you are doing your job well with a dark/ then you should NOT need to be constantly healing, saving it for only when your fighting a nasty boss ((it does have a regen and damage debuff )) or when a lucky shot takes a bite out of your or someone elses hp, otherwise wasting it will not help your end bar or the survival of anyone else.

D:< You are a fruit salad, not a heal bot! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

    *edit*

Also, if you really are facing a stupid challege...like...I unno... Juggling multiple AV's/Giant monsters (you bet you **** I did that) Xyzyx is right, use fluffy to absorb the alpha strike, as soon as possible heal fluffy, douse whatever you're fighting with Fearsome stare and turn on Darkest Night. Fluffy is a pretty smart pet actually and will dump his own version of Darkest night (which is EXACTLY the same as yours, 10 targets AOE up to 25ft from the anchor) this will pretty much put a end to whatever it smacking on you.

Okay, I just want to say something before I help you. A pure Darkness Defender is one of the best defenders out there lol. Okay I'll give you some key powers you need-
    -Dark Servant
    -Tentacles
    -Your AoE heal
    -Your AoE rez
    -Your fear power
-Your sniper power(can't remember the name of it.)
-Tar patch(this is recommended to be one of the last powers you get because tentacles does a way better job.)
-there are two powers you should get in you mastery set:
--The endurance power(can't remember the name of it)
    --Oppressive gloom

Also this is not needed but highly recommended: get hover & flight and get fitness

    Technique while playing a darkness:
keep your Aoe heal on auto. If your going against an av or a huge mob throw your res off even if people are alive so the enemies are debuffed and you can actually effect them. After that throw off tentacles. If you have a very good tank and the groups are held togather throw down tar patch. Also always have Dark Servant out at all times. ***Know when to use those two mastery powers, this is key and will help you.

I have been playing my fire fire tank since 2005 and My uncle has played his Pure darkness since 05 aswell. We are a superior match against any enemies and these are his secrets to playing his d3. If you can get in a team with a kin, a fire fire tank and a stone, you four will be able to take on what 12 man teams can't.

I hope this helps you and if you need any other help feel free to pm me. It's hard to find anyone who plays pure darkness right anymore.
Withs a well build D4 you can take on what 8 man teams have trouble doing solo...watching TV.

The Real secret of Darkness is its To-hit Debuffs which although not obvious = Defense. You really can not really go wrong with anything with Dark but a few things to keep in mind; If you skip Fluffy (dark servant) hang yourself now. He is pure awesome in a can, he will destroy anything he touches, including chuck norris. Another thing, every power in dark/ is useful....except Black hole. It is a rather massive aoe PHASE SHIFT. Teams will hate you and it eats up a slot that can be put to much beter use elsewhere.

Some basic tactics while using a D4:

    1) Open up with Fearsome stare, it is a MASSIVE to-hit debuff that will get you enough time to figure out what to do without worrying about being shot to death from ranged badies. Also anything in a active fear state is pretty much held untill its attacked.

2)Use tar pit often. When you place tar pit put it around a choke point where they HAVETO run through it to get to you, another thing is to not place it at the center of a mob. Put it at the very edge and stay on the far side, they will need to run ALL the way through it to get to you. That will buy you enough time to blast em with Tenticles untill even the most anal of boss's will be rooted firmly to the ground.

    3) Fluffy is a tank. Dont be affraid to resummon him in the middle of a mob, even if hes allready out. The more things around him the more things that being hit by chill of the night, a big -to-hit debuff and a minor damage aura.

There is alot of other neat tactics that can be used with D4, such as hearding with Darkest night but it takes some practice and a confident team to avoid being killed.

Anywho you can find my dark/dark corrupter build here http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=188270 , just replace the mu-master powers with Darkness mastery ((especially the End restore power)) It is a absolute tank, basicly unkillable and fairly cheap at around 150million infs to put together.

It was like 2am when I put it together, I rethunk it abit as I was putting it togeter ingame, Im falling at 43% ranged def. Once I can get a set of Numina for Twilight grasp I can take a set out of one of TT for abit of a damage boost.

The first tasty candy highlights a general overview of "Costume Creator 2.0", as well as a few powersets, especially Super Strength (alt animations!), Spines (alt spines!), Martial Arts (alt animations!), and several others.

Next up, is a wonderful 1765 Bordeaux, such a wonderful year! This masterpiece, direct from a wonderful vineyard, is chock full of rich Stalker preview goodness! It presents all the alternative animations available for the Martial Arts Stalker variant, as well as another demonstration of spines (including a fabulous color match, if I say so myself!) along with a few new touches on the "pom poms of doom", and to top it off, a preview of the newly proliferated Broadsword powerset for Stalkers! Wasn't 1765 a fabulous year?

Also on the menu tonight is a lovely serving of caviar. This caviar is often considered the 5th wonder of the world, starting to make a come back to what was rightfully theirs. Also on display, is an example of a multi-colored EM/ in action... I must say I am quite fond of the bright green TF, if I say so myself!

Next on the menu is a wonderful- yeah, screw it. Next is a video showing the new difficulty system called 'SRSLY'.

Lastly, we have a video of the dual pistol set from Going Rogue! It's pretty freaking sick!
;_; ?!?! What the heck is wrong with you, my god, I have never been so confused in my life!
  8. I rather love dark/dark myself, have one for every AT.
You can make it into a truely unstoppable killing machine if you wish to throw enough inf at it.
    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...63&postcount=2
That build was designed for scrappers but will very very easily fit into the brute mold. It will net you near-soft capped melee defense and 20-30% defense for everything else, combine that with Darkest night from soul mastery and you will have soft cap in all defenses (or at least very very close).
  9. So I managed to get this put together for only about 130ish mil. inf , minus the Num/lotg/-kb, which are fairly optional but I am getting the -kb asap. Anyway its working pretty well actually totally chewing up farms and regular content alike, perhaps abit slower then I would like but the Ranged defense cap is totally worth it. A few things id note however, this is a absolute end-eater. You need to get as many sources of end as you can, teh mu mastery pool is a must along with a fair amount of pacing and maybe blue pills just incase of a "OSHI-" moment.
  10. Moreeee!
This is Renzro, my defender counterpart to Renzer a dark/dark corr.

  11. I believe the pictures will say it all. I am pleased.

I really want to move my villains to heroes because I prefer the Hero side but I also prefer the villain archetypes. (I just feel they are more fun) We already "know" a few things about Going Rogue:

    1) Beta will probably start around Oct-Nov

    2) Interesting enough, I think it could release this year. City of Villains entered beta either in late August or early September. -- It was then released on Oct 31st...

2A) Going Rogue could see a December release. If GR went into beta in Oct or Nov it would follow the same time frame of the COV beta and be released just in time for Christmas. (Which a business would try to shoot for)

    3) We know Going Rogue is adding at least two new powersets: Demon Summoning, Dual Pistols. I believe ALL the ATs may see a new powerset. Remember that old powerset poll from a while back? (When we got WP and Dual Blades), Perhaps we may see some of those.

    4) I also hope we see COMPLETE proliferation. Since there are no new ATs being added more focus could be on porting all the sets to each side. Super Strength Scrappers, Regen Brutes, etc.

    5) Alternate Animations -- I really think Issue 16 is the tip of the iceberg. I believe Going Rogue is going to give us a LOT more customization and copy Champion Online. In Champion Online you can take a power and choose the animation, IE a blast can come from the chest, hand, fist, head, etc. We've already seen this with MA and Super Strength, I think we'll see even more so in Going Rogue.

    6) New Missions -- I think Praetorian Earth is going to revamp missions. We're going to see a balance of the door missions we currently have but also see outdoor missions similar to Champion Online. I also believe Praetorian Earth will be co-op due to this factor. I really believe the outdoor missions and certain door missions you perform set your alignment. (good or bad) -- An example could be: There is an attack in part of the city, do you rescue the citizens or do you go and rob the bank during the chaos?

    7) Post level 50 progression -- I think they are going to take the idea from World of Warcraft (And Everquest did this before this) and do post level 50 progression without a level system. The way Everquest did it was a system called Alternate Advance. Basically, at max level you could set your experience gain to go toward earning points. These points could be spent to increase various aspects of a character such as strength, agi, crit chance, etc. As you got more points you could buy abilities like Flurry (A passive ability that sometimes gave you an extra attack when you swing), an AOE taunt (with a 10 min cooldown), etc.

World of Warcraft is doing a similar system in their expansion called the Titan's path. From what it sounds like, via questing you can unlock extra abilities for your character and passive bonuses. There are several paths to take and a character can respec them.

    8) End game content -- I also think we will see varied end game content. More difficult material geared toward the maxed out players.
okay, time to tear this up!
    1) "All City of Heroes® and City of Villains® players who maintain an active account for the time period beginning August 15, 2009 and ending November 15, 2009 will receive a set of special rewards for their loyalty to Paragon City™ and The Rogue Isles™:

    • Closed Beta access* for City of Heroes Going Rogue™" That means GR beta will begin at the EARLIEST Mid-late november

    2) See #1, 1 month of beta for a major boxed expansion is unlikely at best.

    3) *shrug* Honestly this one is up in the air, wouldn't hold

    4) More likely then #3 though I imagine it will just be part of GR's companion issue if it has one. >_> you beter be joking about /regen brutes...seriously? That would be like a /regen tank, /jranger.

5)Now I like customization as much as the next person but the problem with CO's customization is that its VERY poorly done. All the animations are very very similar, there is no variety, sure you can shoot from your crotch but its generic. You trade off blandness for volume.

6)I only partially agree with you there. Public missions would be cool but we really should stick to instances, it works very well for individual player missions.

7)Pure speculation. The devs have stated they are looking at the early game and ways for futhure advancment post-50 but nothing else.

Now if I was to add something....

A revamp of how AE rewards work. Probably some kind of system that combats PLing (and probably by extention farming). Infact I can allmost assure it as they will need to, to motivate the players to really go out and play the expansions content.
  13. Was playing around with mids managed to create some sort of corruptank so far got teh ranged soft-cap (44.99%), im not too happy with the fact that there is no +range def set bonus for Range AOE attacks...roar...
Right now id like to slot up DS for hitdebuff and nightfall as a ranged aoe but this will knock me off the cap...but the tohit debuffs should make it fine... Thoughts, suggestions?
*edit* Looking at it I think I actually should be quite abit over the soft cap...is mids counting SF/Weave/hover in totals?

  14. Perhaps a bit crude but this HAS to be the coolest tech room in the game.

    |D; oh dear, how would I find a buried door..
  16. xP Ive been having no luck with the half burried doors...
  17. <.< at the moment I have only 2 active accounts with 4 total....I actually got a silly idea and made 4 additional trial accounts and ran 5 instances of CoH on my main right and 3 on my laptop, all at min setting and my internet connection was screaming bloody murder. It was awesome... had em all on follow running around atlas as a color cordinated army of Defenders.
  18. Market is across all servers, I managed to slot the ENTIRE build just for just over a billion (1.020?), but instead of the HO's I frankensloted Res/end IO's and yeah I couldnt fit the +recovery in there either but I really dont think it will make a signifigant difference as Conserve power/other end power are up often enough. I think there is a way to slot another 3.5% melee defense in but I cant remember where I saw it but it would require taking a few slots out of travel powers.

xD actually a few lucky hits with LoTG, someone overbid methinks, but it hardly matters now because I spent it all. \o/ Made my Old Dark/Dark Scrapper into a Defense capped indestructo-tank

  21. Ho-shi, yeah thats a really impressive build! Thanks so much!...I seriously had no idea you could softcap defense like that...sheesh.
*edit* WOW, you were not joking that build really does tear it up, im running aggro caped 52's and not hurting too bad.
=D thanks for all the help! Dark ftw!
  22. D: I gotta say chaos, you're a real ***-hat.
  23. =_= holy heck my hands hurt, curse you polygon laso! Curse you to hell!
Was going to do more angles but...it was too hard on my poor hands...
    And I'm lazy.
  24. Title says it all. Im not very sure what bonus I should be going for or what set would be best for her resistance toggles...they all seem pretty meh. The sets that is.
