  1. Isn't it currently possible to turn on "Suppress VFX When Close" and then change the value of "close" to something pretty far out? I thought people already did this for performance reasons (as well as people who have a few powers with really ugly VFX).

Having a more granular and non-hacky "what do I render" menu would be great, though. "I do / do not want to see" and then like, shields, as an example. Perhaps even "on myself" and "on others". Some people might like VFX on themselves, but turn it off for others because they don't buff others and don't want their graphics card to bother rendering them; others might like it off on themselves because they like to admire their own costume, but don't care what others look like and have plenty of GPU power.

Rejoining a trial is supposed to work, but is finicky. Sometimes you can get back in, sometimes you can't.

A minimum number to start is sufficient to communicate to normal people that something is meant to be done on a team of a particular size. If crazy people want to fill to start, they're aware of the difficulty. Creating limits to discourage them won't work - they can just find people willing to door-sit. They're already thinking about ways to get around the rules.

The only people hurt by this are normal players.
  3. A time limit should be sufficient to say "you gave it a shot and couldn't do it, goodbye!" A specific check on the number of players still in the league is terrible, especially since there can be extenuating circumstances such as disconnects or a griefer that needed kicking; neither of which necessarily means the team is incapable of completing the task at hand!
  4. There are badges for different tasks, such as defeating Siege and Nightstar at their spawn points (instead of pulling), which is much more difficult.

There's also a badge for defeating all of the adds before dealing the final blow to the AVs; sometimes you can just get lucky in an AOE-heavy league and not even have to think about it.

The towers fire deadly lasers unless disabled, but you get an extra Astral Merit for not disabling them (and a badge the first time you complete a run without disabling them). On a team with enough healing, or pulling behind the wall, it doesn't matter, but fighting the AVs at their spawns has, in my experience, required someone on the turret controls.

I think getting a Master of the BAF badge awards an extra Empyrean Merit for that run.

Characters that get enough aggro are targeted by Siege and/or Nightstar, a ring VFX and a warning will pop up over them. If they have two rings then they need to stop building aggro and get away from other people, as they can be Sequestered, which is an unresistable hold on the target and everyone nearby.

There's a lot going on, and rewards for doing things differently, although as any playerbase we've discovered the easiest way to power through it, and so that's what we do most of the time.

BAF's not great, but it's good; and I think it really shines when you run it with 12 to 16 players.

Even though it's just one conversation and an alignment choice, talking to Kang after finishing Anti-Matter's arc is probably one of the most hope-filled moments, due to it being Kang and what he's asking you to do. If Kang of all people can make a decision like that, well... Link to: spoilers!

He may not be a "good guy", but I like to think he's starting on a path of redemption.

    Rogue Magazine

    Such a great issue!

The pictures of Equinox Consultants blew my mind. I had no idea you could do that with bases!

The writing was great throughout. I loved it all, even the belt tip that I don't quite agree with, and look forward to the next issue.

(edit: lol, looked at my garish avatar after posting and immediately remembered all that stuff about saturation; my costumes are better colored, don't worry!)
  9. I find something incredibly endearing about Scirocco, especially any time he talks about Ghost Widow. It's awesome how in each of their arcs you can see how one feels about the other (or in Ghost Widow's case, how she doesn't; although after her initial distrust/confusion about his willingness to help, she figures she can talk him down after sending you to raid one of his bases).

The "He Drives Me Crazy!" souvenir (Ice Mistral complaining about Scirocco's lectures on honor) is great, too.

"The last light of hope is gone from me, save for the cold glow of my Pale Light in the Darkness." Aww.

I managed to get into a few open leagues using the LFG queue recently. But I knew there were a few "last calls" for forming trials, and I was lucky that they didn't fill. They didn't have a problem with me sneaking in, either.

I agree that the queue needs to show how many other people are queued. If you see it growing, you're more likely to stay in it. Otherwise you end up leaving, because you'd still be waiting around for at least as long as it takes a league to fill - and of course, if a league is full for its intended trial, it doesn't matter how long you've been in the queue. They'll be queued for all of 5 seconds while you're still waiting for a trial with room to form.

I'm very surprised that you can make an "open league" join the queue even if it's at the maximum for a trial, meaning it's still a handpicked league, while getting the "open league" credit. I could have sworn that was brought up multiple times during beta as an obvious way to abuse the stated intention of the system. It's disappointing to find out it's still around.

    Slower is fine
    Solo is divine.
I'm still doing trials because I enjoy large-team content, not because there's anything left to earn. (It's also why I join at least one Hamidon raid a week.) I'd rather spend my time in a group even if I don't earn anything useful, than do stuff alone even if I can get a decent reward. In fact, before 20.5 it would have been more advantageous for me to spend my time soloing tips than continuing to run trials.

    The more the merrier.

    I enjoyed that!

I just finished a Keyes trial with a group that didn't know what it was doing, and the league leader didn't even know he had the star until halfway through. (At which point he promptly gave it away.)

We managed to get organized and turn things around, even completing the trial successfully!

I think we'll have a rough time, until enough people (1) learn how to lead it, and (2) enough people can figure out their roles without having to be told in the first place. Then we'll be doing it like clockwork.
  13. Thanks for the fast response! I love your guide. I'm not very good with mechanics, so I really appreciate the extra set of eyes on my numbers.

What is there to nitpick? I certainly don't see a grammatical error or an edit timestamp.

Thanks again! As long as I'm not posting at 4AM I'll get the apostrophe right.
  14. A lot of what I've read about Warshades, particularly keeping Mires and Eclipse up, involves Hasten. I was thinking, the T4 Alpha Spiritual (45% recharge with 2/3 EDR bypass, which I'm guessing is like 30% + ~2%) and enough global bonuses (say, five 10% bonuses, 5 LotGs for 37.5%, and at least 30% more bonuses from a mix of 5%, 6.whatever%, and 7.5%) should total about 150%.

Dechs' MFing Warshade guide says you need 234% for perma Eclipse, which is 95% from enhancements and a further 139% in bonuses. Do I not know what I'm talking about (likely ) or is Alpha Spiritual a way to drop Hasten from a build and still achieve perma (or really-close-to-perma) Eclipse?

    Free Going Rogue

I think game time cards ($20 for 1 month + expiring jetpack) were able to open accounts or upgrade trials.

I had City of Villains very briefly after it came out, but can't remember any of the account details. Then in '08 when I heard about the CoH/V merge I wanted to get back into the game, and I think I just bought a pile of time cards at Best Buy.

Sadly, the account details only say "Retail". I can't even tell which one is Going Rogue.

Those of us who had already purchased CoH and CoV were given the privilege of paying $10 for the extra in-game powers and costume pieces that came with the GvE edition. No one was given anything for free.
    For ultimate clarification:
    • City of Villains released as an "expanshalone" in October 2005. At this time, you needed City of Heroes purchased separately to play a hero.
    • In September 2006 the Good Versus Evil Edition was released. The code for this edition activated both heroes and villains simultaneously (or whichever side was missing, if used on an existing account).
    • In July 2008, players who still only had Heroes or Villains without access to the other side gained that access without having to buy anything extra.

Players who already had Going Rogue and remain subscribers aren't getting anything extra (compared to players who currently don't have it, but will by virtue of continuing to sub), but the time we've had to use the GR content, I think counts as enough advantage. (Plus if we lapse and become Premium, we've still got it.)

    Powerset Respecs

I'm in the "I'd pay money for this" category, and up to a $50 value at that.

I disagree that just because some people will choose sets they're not familiar with that no one should be able to choose new sets. But if you really don't think a warning about adjusting to a new build will work, how about this:

The ability to swap two characters' builds (powersets, enhancements, ATs, and all). So your main, sitting in the first slot because she's the first character you ever made, gets to keep her position, her badges, her name, and appearance, and gets the build of another character of yours. For simplicity's sake, they have to be the same level.

I don't care about the badges themselves, but the things the badges unlocked. I really hate non-account-wide badges, but that's getting off-topic.

I think that shows a flaw in your experiment: value for money isn't about how much is in the store, it's about whether or not you place a value on something equal to the value of your money.

Will you buy the components of the Party Pack when they become purchasable with points? Your experiment proposes buying all non-consumables, after all. If you won't, why not? What if a new set of social emotes comes out and seems similarly worthless to you? Do you buy it for the sake of the experiment? If you don't, then someone might question why you bought X but not Y when they place more value on Y than X.

I think there will be a large amount of content available with the hope that everyone will buy some things, and that VIPs will be able to use their points on the things they want most (but still have to buy points if they want moar nao). There's no easy way to factor in whether or not a player values a particular item, but that's the kind of player the new system will favor by letting players cherry-pick the parts they want and ignoring the rest until they have a use for it, or until the next billing cycle gives them more points.

By the way, a timeline of all packs except GvE (the only item pack available prior to 2008):

Feb 2008 to Aug 2009: Cyborg, Magic, Science, Wedding*, Mac [Pack] (6 gbp each, according to the wiki) = 30 gbp
    * Wedding Pack was in February, everything else (24 gbp worth) was August to August.

Aug 2009 to Aug 2010: Science, Martial Arts, Mutant (6 each) = 18 gbp
I don't know what GR's cost is in gbp, but expansions don't come out often. It also came with a lot of content that can't be compared with costume/emote packs. If you go by just the costume/emotes/[inherent]power, then the GR item pack (not necessary if you bought a physical GR box; not sure about online order?) is 5 gbp, bringing the year's total up to 23 gbp.

Aug 2010 to present: Party (5) + Origins, Animal and Steampunk (6 each) = 23 gbp

I've gotten, and will continue to get, good value-for-money for the Going Rogue content that I've been able to enjoy for... almost a year now, isn't it? And I will be happy to see more subscribers able to create Praetorians and Incarnates when the Freedom change occurs - I'll be ready to help them out and show them the ropes!

Plus, if I lapse into being a Premium account before Freedom starts, I'm assured of still having Going Rogue since I purchased it.
  21. I freed up a couple of names earlier. Nothing I think was zomg-in-demand, but here they are, I liked them... a few years ago when I first made them:

    Obsidia Thorn
    Soul Pyre

  23. Techbot's Valkyrie is amazing. (And you used the Valkyrie boots, but why not the Valkyrie belt? Did it end up looking bad?) Also, don't change the shoulders to Valkyrie "just because" (re:LittleDavid/Valkyrie set) - I like what you chose! Only change it if it actually looks better.

I'm not sure changing the gloves really does anything for Ms. Liberty. She may need a more extensive redesign.

Techbot's Luminary is better, but still falls short of the new Nightstar. I'm not sure she should use a proper human-looking face. Maybe the cyborg faceplate and jaw would be better, if it can work with that helmet?

Love Hercules' Sister Psyche. She doesn't need to be showing off skin to look good! And using a metallic base made it awesome.

Every time I think I know what the costume creator is capable of, someone takes it to the next level!
  24. Technically some kind of "float" power for RP shouldn't need to be a real flight power, just a version of the walk power with the hover animation, or a hover-like animation. (So you're still grounded - can't use the power to float up buildings; in case anyone cares about that. Although considering how many ways there are to get account-wide jump packs now [meaning "who cares if everyone has a free way to get those badges before travel powers"], the real problem might be how cluttered the inherent power section is.)

I suppose an alternative might be to enable power animation customization in the tailor, so you can choose a different walk animation. But if they did that (assuming it's possible - it might be harder than the alternate cast VFX options we have currently) then there'd be a ton of alternate walk animation requests:

    "I want a march!"
"I want a normal, non-sexy walk for women!"
"I want a strut animation that includes a boom box on my shoulder."
"I want that embarrassing shimmy Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd would do on SNL as those Czech brothers in awful 70s clothes. The one they'd use when walking everywhere."

I'd like to see this kind of functionality from walk (and a "hover" would be a very good addition to it!) Sorry if I kind of went on a tangent, but I prefer to think of it as a different way to approach the same problem.
  25. Whew! Thank you to everyone who came out! It was an honor to get the ball rolling, and to see us defeat Hamidon in the Abyss!

And special thanks to the raid vets who got things sorted! I was a bit scared when we needed to regroup after getting just one mito down. But we got things going right in spite of me.

I've got a bit more learning to do, but I will see this done again! After some contemplation beneath the waterfalls of the beautiful, beautiful Abyss...
