  2. i've been having a slight issue with the client locking up after a couple hours of playing.
Generally no error message, it just freezes and then i have to kill it in the task manager when i get bored of waiting for it to do something.

Currently running Win7 64 bit with 4 gigs of RAM and an ATI EAH4870.

The last couple of times it indicated that CoH was using about 1,833,068K. (At least the last time when i wrote it down. The other times i know it was somewhere around 1,800,000K.)
  3. Agh, forgot Connecticon was this weekend. i probably won't be around at all Saturday, but we'll see.

Its a waste of time primarily because the devs don't technically follow anything called "the cottage rule." The cottage rule is a term made up by the players, and it persists because its catchy. As used by the devs, it means only one thing: the devs will not replace Build Up with a power that summons a cottage instead of what it does now. Anyone who wants to rescind that rule literally wants build up to summon a cottage instead of what it does not.

The cottage rule example was intended to be an exemplar for a whole list of design rules the devs obey. I actually posted them almost a year before Castle's cottage post but people keep forgetting them because they are less catchy. Within the context of the cottage rule, *some of* the design rules the devs follow that are the basis for the cottage rule pronouncement are:

    1. A power will not lose a primary function without a critical balance reason for that change that can only be solved by eliminating that feature.

    2. A power will not alter its gameplay mechanics without a significant balance requirement that can only be solved by altering its mechanics. For the most part, this refers to the power being a click, toggle, passive, or location targeted power.

    3. A power will not change its availability within a powerset without a significant balance requirement that can only be solved by such a change in powerset structure. In other words, powers won't change tier.

I should point out I posted those rules above, with more or less the same wording, with permission from Castle, the same developer that made the "cottage rule" post itself.

Everyone saying "the cottage rule" should be eliminated is saying essentially that the devs should not need a balance reason to change an already established power: they can do so for essentially any reason at all. Arguing for the abolishment of the cottage rule is essentially asking for chaos. Without it, no one is protected from any changes for any reason. The rule encapsulates one of the fundamental ways in which the powers design rules care about existing players at all.

Moreover, the devs aren't seriously going to entertain the suggestion to eliminate the cottage rule, because that's just a colloquial umbrella for a large set of interconnected design priorities. There's no way to "abolish" it, because there's no it. "It" is a term to represent a set of priorities.

So the reason why the thread is mostly a waste of time is that its debating a rule the devs don't follow, that refers to a set of priorities the devs won't change, that have almost nothing to do with any actual limitation on what the devs can do to address problems in the game.
Quoted again for those with short memories, those with the tendency to not bother reading more than the last page, and the hard of thinking.

The "cottage rule" is not something that needs to be rescinded. It's simply a set of guidelines stipulating that powers and powersets should only be significantly changed in how they function as a last resort. The "cottage rule" is not why you're not getting that 10k damage blast with a 5 second recharge as your tier 1 power. It's not why that power you loathe so much hasn't been replaced with fondue. It's also not why your favorite power hasn't been replaced with a power that gives you a 10% regen boost and a random dance emote. It's a simplification of a set of guidelines that should seem pretty sensible to anyone who isn't standing there with their eyes squeezed shut and stamping their feet demanding to know why the Devs haven't already implemented their favorite vision of How Things Should Be. (An approach that, thankfully, doesn't work better here than in real life.)

Whether it's an alley toggle or a boulevard toggle, being able to use it on allies would be nice.

The first i usually know about getting into a closed beta is when i see the forums appear in the main list. Not that i get into every closed beta, but the ones that i have gotten into i usually didn't know until i saw the forum section appear.

    *Ahem* It's spelled "ghoti".

Welcome to the forums and the game, Dantia.
One thing to keep in mind is that even on the lower population servers there are global channels that make it fairly easy to find other players, it's just that you're less likely to random tells asking you if you want to team up.
i also have to agree that overall CoH has the friendliest and most helpful community of any MMOP i've ever seen. That said there are of course some posterior headgarments here. i think they're here mostly to remind of us what other MMO communities are generally like. (Although i'm mostly here because i like playing the game.)

    No.

At least that's not how my (non-IOd out) Stalkers play. None of my friends do that either. We tend to stay until all enemies are down.

This. Overall the new launcher works far better for me than the old one did.

When j_s posts it's useful to bear in mind that j_s hates anything that uses anything from Microsoft with the burning fury of thousand suns and will endlessly disparage it with nary a pause for breath. j_s will happily misuse terminology as well as distort and misrepresent facts in order to further denigrate M$. Considering that MS products are usually mediocre enough on their own merits it's a wee bit obsessive. That said, i'm not exactly a fan of Microsoft, but improved functionality is improved functionality even if it uses MS resources.

    Emjoy your Tabasco.
Well, having run several today i have noticed the iXP gain is much lower now, so you're right that it has been nerfed. i strongly suspect that this an error rather than a deliberate reduction in rewards.

i think it was bringing in the whole irrelevancy about the Warworks team that threw me off. It made it sound like you were only talking about diminished rewards for that team, not the trial as a whole.
  16. *meh* Not worth bothering.

"Incarnate XP being divided equally across the entire league is a nerf!"

Some posters i take what they post with a grain of salt; other posters require a whole bottle of hot sauce.

Well, if you don't think about it, at all, it makes sense to post this thread in the Archetypes & Powers General Discussion section. See, base portals are environmental graphics, and graphics in general, apparently, are the same as powers. Somehow.

(All i need to know about the powers system i learned from EvilRyu and Pacur.)

I never cared about any possible Warworks-team increased rewards; what it looked like to me was that the people on that team had less of a chance to score the very rare reward table. I have no idea how true that was, nor does anyone outside the development team... but had no plans to continue trying to find out.
    *facepalm*

Wait for sb to pull Nightwing, defeat her.
Defeat waves of non-attacking runners for 5 mins.
    Go back to tennis court.
Wait for sb to pull Seige, defeat him.
He rezzes, Nightwing arrives. Attack them both so they eventually fall within seconds of each other.

All of this happens in a very small area of one map.

I haven't noticed any specific ATs being required. I'm doing this on an en/en/fire Blaster, so I'm there for damage obviously.

Maybe I'm missing sth important being done by other ATs? I heard some talk of 'rings', possibly there's turrets involved?

I haven't been dying more than once per run.

It's all over in half hour, easy. It's extremely repetitive and simplistic, and appears basically unfailaible as long as the teams not made of morons.

I don't understand why anyone would do it more than once ot twice if it wasn't for the Incarnate rewards.

are there any fans of the BAF out there who like it for any reason other than it's an easy way to get threads etc in half an hour?

    Eco
Wait, wait... you mean your computer doesn't pop a freshly-baked chocolate chip cookie out of the optical drive whenever you complete a BAF? It's the *only* reason i run them. (Well, that and the Incarnate rewards.)

Yeah, i agree Starscream works best when he has the competence to validate his arrogance and overconfidence.

Edit: My theory is that Bay's Transformer movies seem to be based on the original 80s cartoon and pay little attention to anything in the later series. Some of the later series had much greater character depth and more sophisticated storytelling. Bay's largely in it to make movies where robots smash the crap out of each other and everything else around them while stuff blows up in the background. Everything else is largely there to supply justification and transitions for the robot fight scenes. Of course i could be misinterpreting his intent.

i'm only making it worse by offering friends trial invites. Upgrading to a subscription from a trial doesn't count as a box sale either.
