But even if we were talking about NCSoft the instead of Perfect World the US copyright laws still can't be enforced outside US borders without the cooperation of the foreign government where the copyright violations are occuring.
The Perfect World EULA does specify that the laws of California are the ones that apply, which is curious since, as Arcanaville pointed out, US copyright laws make the clauses unenforceable.

i thought there were no aggro limits in the early days. You could herd most of a zone with one debuff toggle to the point that the client was only drawing a few of the mobs that were there and kept cycling through them so that different enemies were flickering in and out of view.

They may provide options, but if you demand monetary credit back to a bank/credit card then they can be found libel for that refund. If they provide credits for other games you can choose that option waiving right to monetary refunds.

At this point in time you can contact your financial institution and stop payment/request reversal of payment, then it's a matter for them to address with NCsoft. This stop payment should not require terminating your account as it would be just like your account dropping back to either VIP or F2P by the NCsoft system.

A class action would be valid in this case since they are in breach of their part of the agreement by suspending support of the game. However CAs are notoriously slow and monetarily you may never see much of your money returned depending on the size of the suit.
Just so you know (since it was confusing me for the first couple of sentences), i think the term you're looking for is not libel, but liable. i kept wondering why you were claiming that NCsoft was defaming you and how that was a breach of contract. Then it clicked. i can be bizarrely literal sometimes.

My bio is the only other genuinely creative contribution I've made to the character within the game itself that NCSoft could claim license to, and that's something you would have difficulty arguing that you had to fill in just to "try the game."

Everything else about the character, what I've discussed on the forums, what I've dreamed up, what I've sketched on paper, none of that are things NCSoft can assert ownership of or license to (or rather, they can, but if the law had anything to do with English they wouldn't have the right to do).

If you don't want NCSoft to be able to use it, just don't put it in the actual game. There's no specific reason to do so.
On a vaguely related note i was reading the Perfect World terms the other day and they actually state that by agreeing to use their services anything you create in their games or post on any of their forums becomes their property. Not that they reserve the rights to use it, it's actually their exclusive property as soon as it's posted in their games or forums. Obviously that might not hold up in court, but unless i drastically misread the agreement that's what it claims.

That's funny. A few years back i discovered the pylons around the Hamidon could also be Wormholed. In my case i first Wormholed them into Hamidon. Where they stuck.

Then again, for a while my hobby was experimenting with figuring out what sorts of objects and critters could be Wormholed. When i wasn't finding new and unexpected locations that mobs could also be Wormholed into. Turns out a number of store interiors are close enough to spawn points to... i'm sure you get the idea. Turns out it's also possible to embed mobs in the AE windows with Wormhole.

*shrug* i don't expect you to believe me since i'm not a lawyer, but i have seen this attempted in similar contexts with actual lawyers involved and it didn't work that way. Still, it's worth trying as long as you have money to spare. Lawyers love money.

For now, I can't do anything but advise you to wait until NCsoft has communicated that information.

FWIW, I'm very sorry that they haven't communicated this information and have passed along your frustrations.
To me the suddenness and timing of the closure (what with a major update nearly completed, new products in the works or even ready for release, and the way NCsoft appears to have not prepared for the closing in advance) it seems that it was prompted more by corporate politics and infighting than anything else. i wouldn't be surprised if an executive who was a major supporter of NCsoft's Western gaming initiatives happened to be on vacation that week, or some of the recent investors started leaning on the board to prove they were really committed to "refocusing their core business". The whole thing seems poorly planned and executed, almost like it was a spur of the moment decision.

Maybe that's just me, but i've known of major corporate decisions that were based on jockeying between the executives and management infighting rather than any calculated business plan in other industries.

i haven't received any direct communications from NCsoft since the closure was announced, so they haven't done any pushing of Guild Wars 2 to me yet.

i'll have to go check, but i'm pretty sure my six month plan was renewed/charged a week or two before the announcement, so i'm wondering what sort of credit i'll be getting.

i probably would have purchased GW2 by now if not for the announcement. Now i'm reluctant to do so. Tried out CO last night and still didn't care much for the look, but i'll give it a chance for a bit. Turned off the cel-shading right off, but still have to sort out the other settings and stuff before i can really judge it as it is now.

Well i read the comic before reading anything about it online, and in the first issue she did come across as being a disconnected and nearly emotionless sex doll who could double as an antitank weapon. That was just in the first issue and the writer may have moved the character on to be more than that, but that first issue convinced me not to buy any issues after that. First impressions can be important.

In my personal opinion the new version of Starfire was so horrible, especially compared to the previous versions of the character, that i didn't want to see more of the comic. Why would you start a series by seeming to affirm every negative stereotype about females in superhero comics anyway? Especially if you're actually going to write a fleshed out character in later issues. "Hey, we got rid of all the people who find vulgar sexist stereotypes of women in comics offensive. Now we can start to tell the sort of nuanced character story they'd enjoy if they hadn't all gotten disgusted and stopped reading. Go us!"

i kind of liked having the issues on hand, but admittedly the boxes do take up a fair bit of space.

i'm also one of those people who find reading physical comics and books a different experience than reading them as digital files. i do a lot of both, but there are certain aspects that don't translate well to digital.

Still i may try the digital version some time soon. Then i won't have to worry about the useless dead weight* added by whatever Yugi-Oh story is running in the back.

*This is of course only in my somewhat tactless opinion.

Sadly, it seems that, at least by some, CO here is being treated with much less respect by the forum community than CoX is over in our neck of the woods...

I seem to remember a little while ago when I came back to check out CoX F2P and I mentioned in game that I preferred CO. I believe the term another poster used here was "dog pile". Yeah, that. But it was no big deal; quite common if F2P games. I didn't and don't judge your community by that...

I tend to judge the heart of a gaming community by its forum community. And currently I'm a little disappointed...

And for those of you who think I just created this account to troll, I played CoX back for 6 months back in 2004. I've returned off and on. I've accumulated 3 years of subscription perks whatever you call them. CoX just isn't the game for me. And no, I'm not going into some long diatribe as to why. It isn't and that should suffice. CO is, again no diatribe, it should just suffice...

If you don't like CO, fine. I fully understand. It's not your cup of tea. But we're trying to extend a hand here and some of you folks are spitting in it...
i'm sorry to hear that. i think most of the resentment dates back to comments Jack Emmert made when he was promoting CO, which is a somewhat silly reason to hold a grudge this far along since he's no longer helming the game, and it's been a long time since he actually said less than kind things about his first MMO. That and there were plenty of CO players around launch trash talking CoH both here and in other forums. The thing is that that is also well in the past at this point and every post i've seen from CO players recently has been friendly and supportive. Unfortunately some people hold grudges for a long time, sometimes well past when those who instigated the grudge have left the group they resent. It's just human nature.

That said, i'm going to give CO a try at least. i remember years ago thinking that the look of the character designs was more clunky and plastic toy looking than i enjoyed. As long as the current game's storylines and setting don't have a similar campy, cartoony style i may even enjoy playing it. i have nothing against the occasional silly story.

Edit: Oh, hey! i was just looking for my old CO login and i found my old beta key tucked away in the same note. Wow, it's been a while...

Unless i'm mistaken, in CoH it's not automated process and a GM has to do it. Whereas in CO it's automated with no oversight by a human.

  17. Ooh, tough call. First i have to decide who to focus on.
Considering reviving and incarnating out my first 50 on Virtue, Navigator FoTa.
Then again there are all my other alts i could play.
And i just created Mender Akemi Homura as an Archery/Time Corruptor because at this point, hey, why not? The entire game world may be on the brink of annihilation or rebirth, so it seems fitting.

    Driven to drink

While i've been a bit more more melancholic than usual the only thing i've been over or under doing that i could attribute to the news of the game's closing is getting even less sleep than usual. Which really isn't that good since i'm generally right on the edge of sleep deprivation since i am not by nature a morning person, or even really a day person, and i typically work 9 to 5. My sleep cycle when not on a set schedule is sleeping from around 5 or 6 in the morning to noon or 2.

Really that's about it. i'm not a heavy drinker by nature or inclination, caffeine aside haven't found any other drugs besides alcohol worth the investment, and generally eat a good diet even if i don't get enough aerobic exercise.

However, i do occasionally drive friends to drink. Mostly to clubs or bars where we hang out.

i think it's partially that i have a lot of other stuff going on without much spare time that 'helps' me not get too worked up over the game. i'm too busy dealing with a fsckton of real life deadlines and projects to even play much right now anyway. Hopefully after the art show in October i'll have more time.
  21. It seems like every time another PS member posts one of these threads i get dust in my eyes again.

i thought that bug was around for quite a while. The first time i saw it was when some Championites ran a series of Ouro portals from the city hall roof over to the Atlas statue and created what was called "The Burning Golden Penor of Doom".

Some time later there was the dropship raid in Steel Canyon, and while we were waiting for a Rikti assault we start building Ouro bridges between a couple of the skyscrapers in the Northern end. One of the best "bugs" ever.
