Most of my villains are on Virtue partially because redside on any server has a much lower average population than blueside. Guardian is a fun server, but when playing redside on any server joining a global channel or two for that server pretty much a must for teaming.

i've found that at least the half the teams i'm on with my Dark/Ice have no kin, but then i don't ever insist on looking for one. i currently have Assault, Tactics and Vengeance and i am considering dropping my nuke since i also run Shadow Fall, Mind Over Body, Hover, Combat Jumping and Darkest Night in addition to the leadership toggles. Awesome as the nuke is, in my opinion it interferes somewhat with the rest of my team support when i have to spend several seconds popping blues and putting toggles back up.

Still, i suppose my build is sub-par by Rigel Kent's standards for taking leadership at all, much less planning to drop the nuke. *shrug*

Well, if you add rows of short spines it's almost like having ridged structures, just place them close together. Assuming the spines are firmly anchored enough to be rigid. Otherwise the waving will make them unconvincing.

  8. i currently run CoX in Windows XP Home and it's the only program that really requires Windows. i have been considering reinstalling Windows with all the latest drivers, but if switching to Ubuntu will give equal or greater performance than my current system i will drop Windows entirely.

    My current system specs are:
    BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz (2 CPUs)
    Memory: 2046MB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS
    Driver Version: 6.14.0010.9424 (English)
    Monitor: SyncMaster 226BW
    Description: SoundMAX HD Audio O
    Hardware ID: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_1986&SUBSYS_1043818F& REV_1005
    Manufacturer ID: 65535
    Product ID: 65535

i haven't upgraded the video drivers in about a year since the last i had the game performance had decreased significantly and i reverted to the old drivers.
What sort of performance would i get using Ubuntu and Wine compared to XP Home?

The word "Cosmic" is like "Magic" or "Technology". It's an idea, better suited to an origin than an archetype or powerset. Make a Kheldian, or an Energy blaster, or a Radiation defender, and name yourself "Cosmic Lad" (add "X" until the name is untaken on your server), and poof. You're cosmic. There's no need for a new powerset for every adjective in the world. We have plenty of powersets that fit many concepts.

Seriously, what would "cosmic" powers be? What specific powers do "cosmic" characters have that others do not, other than metallic surf boards?
Generally "Cosmic" powered usually means much more powerful than a normal hero. Tankmages unimpressed by spawns of all AV's or basically anything less than Hamidon and his posse are usually the sort of thing i'd guess is meant by "Cosmic".
Sort of like how Johnny Butane thinks Tankers should be able to endure and deal more damage than everyone else, but with extra glowing added.

Otherwise i'd say that Kheldians already pretty much fit the usual description of a cosmically powered character in most comics, except that they aren't more powerful than any normal character:
    • Empowered by a being of pure energy from beyond the stars. Check.
    • Able to do things no normal character can do. Like, for example, turning into alien energy creatures. Check.
    • Big, flashy power visuals and sounds. Check.
    • Regularly battles alien enemies that normal characters will not encounter unless a Kheldian is around. Check.

Well, crap. i currently have no ITF-level alts on Triumph. Actually i'm not sure what my highest level alt on Triumph is right now. Probably a Defender or Scrapper.

Edit: Nope, the two highest are a Blaster and a Controlller. Both quite low. The Controller has a horrible, horrible name that implies i was drunk and feeling a bit absurdist when i made him. If i actually started playing him regularly he'd probably get genericed before level 20 and it would serve me right.
  12. At 50 my Defender is speed-capped with 1 flight speed in Swift and 2 in Fly. Also a couple movement speed bonuses from sets.

When i do my next respec i'm going with 1 slot of flight speed in each and use the GvE pack when i want to hit the speed cap.
i never slot Fly for endurance reduction since i always use Hover in combat, and Fly doesn't use much endurance anyway. For the first few years of the game Fly's unslotted enfurance usage was greater than base recovery. Now, it's barely noticeable.

Well, Angry_Citizen just posted a goodbye message because he's leaving for college and won't have time for CoX anymore. He joined in 2004 (making him old school) and is 18 years old. So i'm guessing new school means just starting to notice gender differences and dreaming of getting a driver's license some day?

So, you new schoolers may have noticed hair growing in places it never did before, skin blemishes appearing, mood swings and urges you never had before. It's called Chronic AE Poisoning, and the only cure is to avoid the AE buildings and give all your inf and set IO's to someone with 36 month or higher veteran badges.

If you don't do this very soon you will gradually become the Angry German Kid from Youtube.

  16. i disagree with a number of your statements Rraven, but i can understand that you feel insulted and defensive, so i'm not going to waste both your time and mine with an argument. Also, paragraphs/line breaks improve readability.

Actually, i think i'd be willing to team with both you and Pine, as i'd be interested in comparing playstyles. What server was all this?

Wait, the original creator is still alive? Wouldn't he be at least in his late eighties by now? That's pretty impressive. (Can't recall offhand if GI Joe dates back to WWI or WWII.)

i'll probably give the movie a miss for now and see it when it comes out on DVD.
  19. Welcome to the forums, Red Skeleton. i'm ignoring for the moment that you probably are already familiar with the forums, just not as red name.

(BTW Avatea it's "canon" not "cannon". Unless, of course, you're planning to launch him into space at some point. Moon zone, ho! )

The movie is also being discussed on slashdot. One of my favorite posts because it sums up much of what i liked about the film is:
    Quote:
The fact that they produced the best looking special effects you've EVER SEEN on a budget less than 1/10 that of a normal summer blockbuster didn't phase you as something groundbreaking or revolutionary ?

There were plenty more elements to the plot than apartheid. Personally, I felt the bigger parts of the plot were the interactions between the main character and his wife -- who is rarely shown but constantly mentioned throughout the movie. Despite everything that Wikus is undergoing, he is actually gaining humanity throughout the movie rather than losing it -- and his connection to his wife is the greatest force driving him... not some apartheid or megacorporation. Yes, those are shallow devices to setup the situation and they certainly have some flaws, but in the end, this is a uniquely personal and human journey of fear and loss that Wikus takes us through.
Edit: *heh* And a bit later on:
    Quote:
The third act is where the movie devolved into traditional Hollywood tropes.
The long-awaited shootout with the ******* who has been hounding the protagonist since the first act. Pitting two factions, MNU + Nigerians, against each other. The hero being saved by the downtrodden prawns at the very last minute.
The little alien Wesley Crusher who's in the downed alien craft and after 20 years discovers how he can wake up the mothership to save the day.
How the love for an adult and his child can make anything happen.
Finally two adversaries become friends much like Dragonball Z.
Everything leading up to the end was good but it's like they ran out of ideas.
Okay, they ran out of good ideas.

Well, i don't recall Chris being there when it happened. Not to mention the Prawns might have a different view regarding child rearing. Especially when you consider the vast majority seemed to not be especially intelligent or motivated.

With the apparent levels of technology available to the Prawn species, biological included, it's quite possible that different castes and capabilities are created through diet and other cues/triggers. The prawns were also obviously reproducing at an astounding rate given the conditions they were in and the efforts by the MNU to prevent breeding implied by the one scene, and yet their population had basically doubled in twenty years. It's quite possible the young are considered no more than animals/pets until they develop to the point of speaking, thinking and looking like the "adults". i suspect the creatures that were in the pit fighting scene may have been Prawn juveniles before they develop into the adult Prawn form. They breed masses of young and the ones who survive to maturity are accepted as actual members of the Prawn society.

Chris' son was even more intelligent than his father, who seemed far more intelligent than the average Prawn, which is why i'm guessing that Prawn intelligence and motivation is set by caste and mediated through some sort of biochemical or genetic regulation. Possibly Chris and the other Prawn that was killed fairly early on were formerly of a mediator/middle manager caste somewhere between the leaders and workers. At least that's a definitely possibility implied by much of the incidental dialogue and events/visuals seen in the background.
  24. Though i never met him i'm sorry to hear of his passing.
    My condolences.
