1. some great stuff in there! Looking forward to lots of it.

Hopefully there's not a top-secret 'nerf' list to counter all the goodness coming our way.

Wings? oh yes please! Hope you can set the colours!

In fairness, more cossie options is always a good thing

So, what IS the ETA for i8?

Probably the best advice one can give: Don't rush into stylised art before knowing, practicing and breathing the fine and classic art.

You've hit the nail on the head there Swissy. I for one have no ability whatsoever to produce Manga figures. i think Manga often 'suckers' people into thinking it's very simple to create, but without an understanding of form, it just won't look right.
3. Ok, hope this helps you get started if nothing else.

I apologise for the crudeness of the pics, but they're just to show you how to start it off.

First of all, let's assume you want to draw a heroic (or villainous - I'm not judging! ) man, clenching his fists like he's ready to start (or finish) a fight.

First of all, you could draw a stickman, like this:

Figure 1

But frankly, it's a bit pants, and you can't really tell what he's doing. Also, it's not a great starting point, because he's lacking certain anatomical references. For instance - people have shoulders (I'm kinda hoping this isn't news! :P ) and a pelvis, and they have a neck between the head and the body. Also, heads aren't round like a ball, they're more of an oval shape.

So, starting with a stickman again, this time, it's a little different just to take the above factors into account.

figure 2

so, you still don't need to be an artistic legend to create figure 2, but it's a better starting point for your figure.

My biggest hint at this point is practise doing these, cos you can knock them up in seconds and you'll soon get to a place where you're tweaking them because they don't look quite right - it's a great way (and IMHO an essential way) of planning out a pose before you start your drawing proper.

Once you're happy with your pose, you can make it more dynamic- as you are drawing superheroes after all - this is something I got from the marvel book, and have used it ever since.

I've decided to get a bit closer to the action so I can show the expression on my character's face. I also want to put a bit of depth in, so I've made the pose a bit more dynamic...

figure 3

and then I'm going to flesh it out.

This is where you really need to use your eyes. look at what people look like. I find one of the best references is athletes, so do a google image search for sprinters, or hurdlers (sp? - people that jump hurdles, anyway!) and look at how the muscles fit over the skeleton.

I've done a VERY quick sketch to flesh out this character, and it's rubbish, in honesty, but I guess that gives another key message - you're not always going to get it right first time, but by keeping your lines loose and referring to reference images, you're be able to pick out the lines you want and refine your drawing until it's looking great.

figure 4

I hope that helps. I know it's very basic, but it will pay dividends if you practise. Even though I can produce figures I'm really happy with now, I ALWAYS start with these steps.

Everything that I've posted on my thread started this way, so give it a go, and let us know how you get on!
4. really good Jon. you've got a real talent with the written word.

Looking forward to the next chapter

heh, any space in DaVS for a 50 EM/EA brute and a 47 Ice/Kin corrupter?

Of course - we have a rehab program for Villain who thought they could live without being in DVS
8. tell you what, no wonder you EVIL guys come on to the DVS thread. yours is RUBBISH!
9. pah, you clearly don't realise you're talking to someone with a twin-monitor set-up - your puny resolution doesn't phase me BJB!! :P

The image is 2000 tall, so i can meet your requirements. The treasure map background will need resizing, but that's what you get for random google images
10. love it! looks really good.
11. btw, I've launched a SAAL sister thread today.
It's on Union Heroes - do pop in and say 'hi'
12. You know what Max, I've been thinking about offering my artistic talents out, and obviously would be swamped if I offered them for free....

But then again, people may not have physical cash to buy one...

So maybe if there was something they used thier skills for which they could exchange for my skills, such as...oh, I don't know, say if someone used thier skills to gain an HO, they could exchange it for a use of my skills...

Just a thought
13. Hi and welcome to the SAAL Official Thread,

The purpose of the thread is to allow us to:

Organise Events & Raids
Communicate ideas (eg: the base)
Make SAAL great again!

Pre-CoV, SAAL was one of the most active Supergroups out there. It supported a lot of us to our first 50, and was a force to be reckoned with on Union.

So, time to dust off the cobwebs and get things moving.
First of all, we need to get the SG active again. There were some toons that hadn't logged in for over 6 months.

Right now I'd love for us to be creaking at the seams, but we're not (although I am working on it), but we have space to recruit at the moment, so recruit recruit recruit!!

We're only going to find a good mix of people by having people in place, so invite people you team with, invite people that have rolled new alts - those that like it will stay and build the SG, but the thing that will make most people want to stick around is having an active player base.

ORGANISATION:
I've renamed the ranks, and propose a structure for promotion - although this assumes that a toon joins us at level 1. For higher level people that join us, it'll depend on how active they are in thier first couple of weeks.

Apprentice - New recruits to the SG - levels 1-20
Experienced - Your hero is gaining a reputation as you climb to level 30
Hero - A force to be reckoned with as your hero's career takes them to level 50
SAAL Legend - Once you hit 50, you've earned your place as a legend within the SG
Superhero - The leaders, limited in numbers (unlikely to be more than 5, depending on the size of the SG) who have taken up the mantle to drive the SG forward.

It's similar to the structure we have in place for SAAL's alter-ego SG - Demons and Vengeful Spirits (DVS) and has worked well in practice.

I remember a time when SAAL had about 30 level 50's who were all leaders to reflect thier status in the SG. The SAAL legend is created for those people, who have earned thier status but don't want the responsibility of leadership.

EVENTS:
Strike Forces and Respecs: Use this forum to request a team to run a TF. There's loads of content in CoH and sometimes the only thing that stops you runnnig it is getting a team- I hope that together we can remove that obstacle.

Raids: Now we have a raid-capable base we should look for as many opportunities to raid and be raided as possible.

Any group fancying a raid please let us know here or in game (@S C A R L E T / @Cold Spark)

THE BASE:
Cold Spark has done a sterling job of base mainentance in DVS and puts real effort into making the base as fuctional and defendable as possible. The only thing I ask is that everyone stay in SG mode as long as possible.

There are NO disadvantages to being in SG mode if you're under level 25, then it's on a sliding scale until level 30/35 (iirc?) when you earn only prestige and no inf.

I hope that as the SG builds, the legends will be able to support the lower level players financially, allowing peeps to stay in SG mode longer and earn prestige for the SG and for Sparky to work his magic.

So, calling all Heroes & Spirits, old and new, the SG is moving up, will you be a part of it?

Any suggestions, comments, ideas etc, see me in game, or /tell me.

thankyou!!
14. I created a 1280x800 image for Lady to use as a desktop. Want me to do the same for you? What resolution do you use?
15. I don't at the moment, as I have a specific reason for creating these.

Once that's done however, I'm sure I could come to some agreement
16. Thanks Blaze.

It's been a while since i tried it in fairness, so I might download the new trial. I've seen there's loads of tips and stuff online, so I might take a look and see if i can get to grips with it - at least enough to stick with it!
17. Oh Helioss, I could, if only i could remember that your cossie is red and black armoured pads, with skull belt, bone hands and boots, not to mention your skull head and tattered cape, but sadly I can't remember what that cossie looked like :P
18. yeah, it's really good. I've tried a trial of photoshop and don't really see it doing things any differently - just not as user-friendly IMO
19. what program? Paint shop pro 9
20. stick me down for any
