  4. I'm an official artist on the Lord of the Rings Masterpieces II Sketchcards!

So what, exactly, does this mean? It means I've signed on to do 200 individual drawings on awesome blank trading cards to be inserted into the trading card packs!

I get to draw Gollum, Arwen, Eowyn, whomever I want Ideas and suggestions are MORE than welcome! At the end of the whole deal, I get to keep 6 for myself. What I do with these? I've no idea...auction most likely.

As to CoX commissions, this does not affect those listed, and this weekend shall be my commission only weekend to get that backlog cut in half!
  5. Introduction of new artists and styles is a great way to combat artist's block.

I've found that sometimes, the best way to combat a lack of inspiration from art, is to get away from the art itself. Take long walks, get outside, see friends, socialize.

The doldrums can really put a cramp in creating art, and sometimes life situations get in the way. Just remember, that it'll pass and you've got a pretty big cheerin section for ya here on the forums

    If you want to be an artist, I'd HIGHLY recommend that you learn another skill that will make you money and have the art be a sideline. Two main reasons;

1 - It's very, very hard to make a comfortable living doing art. There's always someone else willing to draw it better for less.

2 - Should you be lucky enough to get your art to pay for your living, it becomes a 'must do' process and isn't that fun anymore. I gave up freelance because I was forced to draw what paid the bills and not what fed my soul. Now, when I leave my day job, I can come home and comfortably draw whatever I want.

    Echoing Doug on this...

Learning art is tough.... working full time? Whew. A company asked me to jump onboard for a project a few months ago. They wanted 180 pages of artwork in three months. Now, the asking price was right, but you have to understand... 180 pages in three months... sixty pages a month... Sixty...finished...pages.

Say goodbye to your social life

Now, the various industries of art have different standards, and once you're in, you can USUALLY find your way back in should you leave for awhile.

Art is like an extension of your body, you must keep exercising it, or your skills will diminish over time.

It's a lifelong commitment that only the passionate and crazy stick with A good chunk of the time, clients don't pay, leaving you frustrated and bills unpaid, a lot of times you'll put in that extra effort and get no appreciation for it... But I wouldn't trade it for the world.
  12. I shall now invoke the spirit of Lou, my wonderful drawing teacher.

    Shape...shape shape shape....silhooooouette.....

Okay. So you want to paint? Really, all good painters started with solid drawing skills. So try this. Get charcoal, compressed blocks, vine charcoal, etc. Next, set up a variety of objects (Try an egg shape, a box, something like a creamer or a vase) under one focused light, a regular lamp does fine really. Noooow draw them!

When you're finished with this nice study, you should do about 30 more varieties of such. This should help you get a grasp on volumes, light and shadow, composition, etc.

Charcoal is your FRIEND. It's cheap, it's readily available, and you can do a mess of things with it. It is the building block of a good painter.

Once your arm has fallen off, you can move to paints. I would suggest when you start, to only start with black and white. I hate acrylics, so you could use acrylics, but I do advocate trying oils. I also suggest before buying oil paints, that you read up on them. Because oil paints deal with so many toxic substances, you want to keep yourself safe.

I would not try watercolors unless you have a handle on oils first. It was a lot harder for me having done watercolor first, to get the hang of oils...

Juggy, what happened to Juggertha's comic

I liked that one a lot and wanted moar.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Wow, you mean you actually remember it? I'm impressed.

I actually plan to revisit it soon. I've been working on my backgrounds a bit, and hope that'll bump Juggy's panels up a notch (like historic backgrounds for each era).

The question is, who called him? BAH! Well either the Goat... or Smersh... judging by the strength of that BAH!

Are you sketching in illustrator? If you have photoshop, I can point you in a few directions as to how to set up for sketching there

You know LJ, I like the volume and solidity of the first one, I think the second one is missing that... I mean, you can feel how tense he is in the first piece... I dunno what it is :/ I still love the first one...

    So.....

Nope.... Internet's frazzled with all the fires around me.

    So.....

So, Thor, are you commissioning other artists again?
  18. Another lil tip: Make sure no one's around you when you take screenies. Make sure you've got a nice clean silhouette and you're not standing on top of anything.

    It's helpful
  19. Very cool Alex! I actually have a bit of a proposition for ya. If you ever feel like colloborating, I'd love to ink over and color one of your pieces at some point As a thank you for including my guy in your sapper chicks piece
  20. Testing out a new way of sketching...

They forgot the ball and chain!

Very nice palette on that piece.
  22. I can tell you this much... for a logo, it will be more busy than necessary, especially since most logos appear in small format, all that detail you want will be lost sadly.
