I only read the first few replies, not the whole thread, but wanted to chime in that the OP is most definitely not alone. I've teamed with some pretty awesome Khelds over the years. In particular I did an ITF a while back with a real kick-*** WS so I finally decided to try one out. I rolled up a WS, grabbed some nifty binds so that I wouldn't lose my sanity changing power trays, and started leveling up.
I stuck with him until the mid-30s, but he's shelved. I constantly felt like I was the proverbial "jack of all trades, master of none." I could do lots of stuff but nothing particularly well. It just wasn't fun for me. This is in stark contrast to my experience with my Widow, which was fun from 1-50.
I most definitely am not saying that Khelds suck! I've teamed with lots of them over the years that were great teammates, and reading the Kheld forums I can see there's a lot of folks who love theirs.
Unlike the OP, I wouldn't say that Khelds "feel like fail," I'd just say they are ATs that don't appeal to everyone. -
Quote:You noted the boss setting, but if you look carefully at the wording it says "no bosses when solo". So in other words even with a virtual team size of 8 you can turn off bosses when you're solo. But once you add even a single real teammate, the spawning system looks at your total effective team size to decide whether or not to add bosses.Don't think it works like that, I was farm (yes, farming) set for +4/x6, solo, no bosses spawned.
I invited a friend to join and bosses started showing up, even though I had bosses turned off, I then turned the difficulty down to +2/x6 and again to +0/x6 and finally realized I had to put the team size down, I put it to +4/x5 and no bosses spawned for me.
Spitting_Trashcan was right in that the effective team size is either actual team size or your virtual team size setting, whichever is larger. The system doesn't add them both together. If it did, then if you were running a full team when set to +0/x8 you'd see spawns set for 16! (Which would be awesome).

Quote:Quote:Interesting. I looked this up on Merriam-Webster and got the following:
Main Entry: bought·en
Pronunciation: \ˈbȯ-tən\
Function: adjective
Etymology: bought + -en (as in forgotten)
Date: 1738
chiefly dialect : bought <the only boughten carpet in the region H. W. Thompson>
Is that for real? I did not know 'boughten' was a word?!Boughten is certainly a real word but that doesn't make it standard English (hence the "chiefly dialect" annotation, above). Perhaps some people don't understand that dictionaries fulfill a descriptive rather than prescriptive role. There are lots of words that are in the dictionary that are not standard English. For example "dis" meaning "disrespect" is in Merriam-Webster but is most certainly not standard English. So while the mere fact that a dictionary documents that a word exists makes it fine to use in Scrabble, it doesn't automatically make it part of standard English.
Of course, just as some words like "boughten" fall out of standard use, other words eventually work their way in. The word "genocide" dates back only to the 1940's yet is absolutely standard English. Other words can take decades to make the transition. Merriam-Webster recently added the word "ginormous" (2007 edition). This neologism was coined only a few years after "genocide" and is widely used but most editors would still say the word isn't yet part of standard English (although it may eventually get there).
All that is to say, feel free to use the word "boughten" in your guest op-ed for the NY Times, but don't be surprised when the editor strikes it. -
Quote:This will indeed be cool, but I'm saving my "best QoL feature of all time" kudos for when they implement a "team looking for more" function.I've enjoyed virtually everything done to this game on some level (save for Day Jobs... blech!)...
And this, I have to say, is the best QOL feature that has ever been or will likely ever be added to the game.
Enemies on the minimap FTW!
Oh, and for those of you curious how news of the "enemies/glowies on the minimap" enhancement found its way into the forums, I believe Mandu was the first to post it, in the PAX discussion thread. -
4: Fire/SR scrapper, Nightwidow, Ice Tanker (softcapped only to Lethal/Smashing, but that works well enough), and my SS/Shield Brute. Widow was easiest, Brute was toughest, but he's a beast as long as his def doesn't get debuffed. Not much resist to that.
Quote:How many of your other toons do you plan to soft cap?
Quote:Do the terms soft cap and hard cap make you giggle? -
I believe NCsoft stopped publishing sub numbers 2-3 quarters ago. I was just looking at their quarterly reports, and CoH is contributing more revenue than Guild Wars, but far less than Lineage 1 or 2 or Aion.
-
I've heard that too, although the number of folks actually logging in seems to be dramatically down the llast couple of weeks. I'm chalking it up mostly to CO and Aion. Hopefully it's just a temporary dip, and COH will actually be the "new shiny" for folks to check out when GR goes live.

Quote:I didn't give him any neg rep, mainly because of the following comment:I love how you neg rep him for defending his wife.
You people are class acts for real.
Quote:No one should have a negative reaction to a thread like this. You dont have the right, and your responce frankly breaks the rules of this forum. Why? Because your always wordy when you say rude things to her.
Also, I think both he and you are missing a very basic point. If you label a thread *Going Rogue Update* most folks who see that and have a basic understanding of punctuation will open the thread expecting that you have information you intend to share. If you just would've given it the title Going Rogue Update? people would have known to not waste their time on it.
Even though multiple people have pointed it out, both he and you apparently still didn't quite get it, hence this (probably futile) attempt to lay it out a little more explicitly. -
I don't like the OP's suggestion, but I do wish the game offered more options for visible stuff that reflected accomplishments. I like things like the Rularuu and Vanguard weapons and the Cimeroran armor. Some folks dislike unlockable costume bits because they have a character concept that they want to start with at level 1, to which I reply: *shrug*. I like the idea of having visible stuff that implies "I did something to get this." I'd like to have glowing costume pieces in GR for doing the new end game content. I'd like to have special auras only available if you have 500 badges. Etc.

If you can handle the bosses, you might want to think about leaving them. They have a chance of dropping Pool C/D recipes. I got a LotG 7.5% recharge today off a Paragon Protector!

Quote:You're not doing anything wrong. You're just having a run of bad luck with the Random Number Generator.I have by now under the same settings cleared the map 4 times, and had the results shown above as an average, sometimes I get a few more drops, others I just get less; but in all cases, I get no Invention drops; so what am I doing wrong?
I suppose one could argue if you really want to optimize your settings for drops, you should run at +0/x8 not your current +2/x8. That will make it faster to defeat mobs and thus the drops will flow faster. You could even run at -1/x8 but be warned that any invention recipes you get will be 49s and even though the difference between those and 50s is negligable, they go for substantially less inf. -
Quote:I believe the current expectations are that they'll talk more about it at Hero Con.I know there has been rumblings here and there. Crazy talk about graphical updates. New Powersets! New places to go and people to see. ETC. I checked the Dev Digest. I didn't see any new rumblings from the "Almighty Developers"!
So... I was wondering when the advertising people and/or lawyers, are going to let Positron or some other Famous Dev tell us more about the upcoming expansion to City of Heroes and Villains! -
Quote:I don't know how you think that comparison is at all relevant to my post. "Game balance" doesn't mean all enhancements are equal. It has to do with the developers' vision of what should be easy, possible with a lot of effort, or flat out impossible with enhancements. For example, if you slot a power with purples to get the hefty recharge and accuracy bonuses you typically end up suboptimal enhancing of other aspects of that particular power; i.e. by frankenslotting you could get a better combination of acc/recharge/damage/endreduc/etc, at the expense of the juicy bonuses. That tradeoff is part of game balance. To the extent that new slotting options allow us to optimally enhance more aspects of a power AND get the nice set bonuses, that's just moving the balance towards "I win" and thus away from the (dev subjective) balance equilibrium point.Do you really think you won't notice such an ungodly drastic difference between especially the first and last?
Quote:Do you really think that this suggestion would be more "broken" than purples? Especially since what he's posing is already in IO sets, but not quite to the way he's suggesting. We already have +acc/+dam, but we don't have +heal/+res -
Quote:I wonder. We know the dev team at one time was the "Freem Fifteen" but they now number over 60. They're currently hard at work building GR and all its zones and missions. But when they're done with that they're still going to have a TON more resources than they had one or two years ago.Faultline-style revamps all 'round would be a tremendous addition to the game. Failing that (considering the resources such a project would consume) ....
My hope is that once GR is released, they'll have two or three people dedicated to freshening up existing zones. I'm not holding my breath because they've shown a marked preference for new content over revised content. But one can still hope. -

I don't think a chat channel is a good solution to the problem of people who want to team not being able to find one. You'll note that usually the complaint is "I can't find a team" not "I can't form a team." The fact is that many players are allergic to having the star. They'll broadcast that they're looking for a team, they might even send tells to folks asking to join their team, but they won't form their own. Just telling people, "get over it, learn to form your own teams" only goes so far. Yes, some people will learn to form their own teams. But many people are just shy or lacking confidence to the point where they'll never do it.
I have a different problem: I often find myself having enough time to run only one or two missions. I hate assembling a team then leaving it after only one mission. I feel like it's bait-and-switch, because so often the team falls apart after the original leader leaves. So in that situation I'll generally solo. But if there was an easy way for me to find and join an existing team for a mission or two, I'd take it in a heartbeat.
The game needs the oft-suggested "Team Looking for More" function. The team lead would be able to turn on such a function and set options much like we can with the current Search feature. You could leave it wide open or select certain ATs and level ranges. People who fall within the filter settings would see the team in the "Search for team" screen and be able to join; people who fall outside the filter wouldn't see the team. -

Quote:That could explain it. I had no idea this type of "select from different mob types" situation even existed! It might be because that map spawns a random set of Possessed Scientists. I have it on Live, and I always get the Stone Armor lackies, and the Kinetics Lts. My friend, Shadow Ravenwolf, usually gets that, but occasionally, he'll get the FF mobs instead. When he does, he'll exit and reset the mission. Sometimes it takes him a few tries before he doesn't get the FF spawns.
Maybe Ouro isn't randomizing, and is just grabbing the first entry in the list, and that's it?
I do know that for my Live version of the mission, I've ALWAYS had the exact same mobs, but I have teamed with others who have the mission, and have different mobs...
I haven't reset this a large number of times; I've only grabbed the Ouro mission twice. So perhaps it does the same random mob types as live but I just happened to get the nasty ones both times. -
Just checked Paragonwiki, the demon ship is the 2nd in that same arc. You should see right away what I'm talking about if you start the Ouro version of the arc. Quite different powersets than the live version. And in the case of my defense-based character, just about the worst possible powers!
-
I decided to try some Ouro arcs. I unwittingly chose an arc in Ouro that I also had on live, Tavish Bell's The Code Merlin (lvl 50, set for +0/x8). I entered the mission, saw all the Possessed Scientists and Burn Protectors and went "oops, I have this identical live mission." But hey, I was there so I got to work. One thing I noticed immediately was that every spawn had a Dispersion Bubble toggle on as I got near, and then they dropped two Earthquakes close by each other. Overlapping Earthquakes are bad news for a Shield Defense brute! I saw my defense drop from a soft-capped 46% to -50% in seconds. I attempted to complete that mission but it was the same story with every spawn. At least two overlapping Earthquakes that debuffed my defense to negative numbers quickly. It was way tougher than its live equivalent.
Out of curiosity after I'd completed it I went back to the (supposedly) identical mission on live. No Earthquakes at all. Spawn after spawn, not one Earthquake (not that I'm complaining!). No Dispersion Bubbles either. Went back to Ouro, got the arc again, Earthquake city, Dispersion Bubbles in every spawn.
So this is really two questions:
1) Are multiple Earthquakes from a single spawn working as intended? I know once upon a time the CoT Earth Thorn Casters used to drop multiple overlapping Quicksands and Castle (or someone) fixed that. Are the Earthquakes supposed to be like Quicksand and have only 1 per spawn?
2) Aren't Flashbacks supposed to be identical with live arcs? Why does the Flashback version of this mission turn into Earthquake hell yet the live mission has NO Earthquake at all? The Ouro mission is apparently populated with Possessed Scientists with radically different powersets.
If anyone wants to see this for themselves I'd be happy to show them on Freedom since I have the live mission saved and it's easy to get the Flashback version. -
Quote:I didn't take it as being condescending, you made a reasonable point.I don't know what to tell you, then. I'm at work, so I can't test this now.
I wasn't trying to be condescending, I apologize if that's how it came across. The only reason I brought it up was the reply to MechaCrash. He asked if bosses were turned on and you only said "I saw bosses in CoT missions."
When I get home tonight, provided I remember, I'll test this.Sorry if I came across as snippy in my reply--I just wanted to be much more explicit and get all the details I could out there in case anyone was willing to test things.
-
Yes.
Quote:Yes, I read your post, you've seen bosses in CoT, Longbow, and Arachnos missions. The reason I'm asking is because CoT, Longbow, and Arachnos bosses stand out in a crowd, even if they are downgraded to LTs.
But since this has come up in a couple of replies I'll try to be more clear: I have "Bosses are OK when solo" turned on. I'm going by rank, not just visual ID of mobs. I was very careful scanning multiple Council spawns for bosses and not a single one was to be found, in multiple missions.
Easy way to test: start the (redside) level 45-50 Ouroboros arc Vigilante Justice. The first mission is Steal the Tapes from the Council. Set at +0/x8, bosses OK, for me the mission is packed with spawn after spawn of minions/LTs only. No bosses.
