Quote:I think you're once again setting the bar too high. If you look at a game like WoW and how they do their end game, people play that for years because they periodically raise the level cap and create new carrots to chase after. It takes so much grinding to get all the epic gear you need that by definition you'll be chasing after the loot for months. Once you have your gear you keep grinding to get the gear for your guildmates. Once you all have it you buy the dandy new expansion and you start the treadmill over again, right?GR has end game. I know people in other games that have been happily playing their end game for years. I expect the same atleast from this game, if not better.
Our devs have already said repeatedly there will be no level cap increases for CoH. Our power and enhancement system aren't conducive to that. They're going to create a means of powering up our characters that is as of now unannounced (although my money is on the Universal Enhancement Slots idea from the old August '08 marketing survey). Unless they create new "bind on pickup" tech that will make people grind content repeatedly for rare drops, it's hard to imagine an end game that will last for months, let alone years.
I'll be overjoyed to be proven wrong, of course. -
Nope!
Look, some things can be proven numerically and some things are more subjective. If you like the particular mix of survivability and performance of a tank more than a scrapper, more power to you. That comes down to personal taste. Anyone who tries to convince you that you ought to like scrappers more is wasting their breath.
But when you make claims that tankers are close to scrappers in damage output, that's something that can be proven right or wrong with careful analysis. (Unless your definition of "close" is completely different from everyone else's?) Players like Bill have been carefully crunching the numbers on this stuff for years and their numbers hold up in actual game play. It's not some kind of magical arm waving where the numbers look good on paper but reality doesn't match up.
No one is saying you shouldn't enjoy tankers and play the crap out of 'em. Just don't make overreaching claims that end up destroying your credibility.
To use an analogy, you could own a Miata and claim that it was a great sports car and no one would gainsay you. But if you went further and claimed it was as good as a Ferrari in absolute performance, well, that'd be like saying a tank puts out the same damage as a scrapper: an easily disproved falsehood. -
Quote:No, I think you had the right understanding. I seem to recall reading a dev once who said they planned on TFs being very long, and expected groups of friends to tackle them a little at a time over the course of several days. That's why TF mode is persistent even if you log off.It was my first time, and I thought it was meant to be rough. Took me a long time to realize that Task Forces are intended to be 1-2 hours with a tight-knit group of friends.
It's only over time they realized that almost no one was doing it the way they intended and eventually they started planning TFs that could be tackled in the 2 hour range. -
Quote:Yes, content was mentioned somewhere. And IIRC correctly, you went "am I the only one that thinks this means all new arcs from 20-50?" And the reply was "yes, you're literally the only one."I cant find it atm, but I will... It said content update somewhere in one of these 90 million threads... Will find it later.
You're disappointed because somehow you got it in your head that i17 would be a massive update. However, other folks with more reasonable expectations are quite excited. -

Quote:I don't see it as a big deal because surely you'll be able to carry recipes & enhancements. It'll just become standard procedure to take all your liquid wealth and invest it in pricey stuff before switching over. You'll take a hit switching from red to blue as stuff is generally cheaper blueside, but you'll still easily be able to carry enough unslotted items to go well above the inf cap if you so desire.According to this interview with war witch, it looks like we won't be taking our inf with us when we change sides. It's not completely spelled out, but seems pretty clear.

Gotta agree with Techbot. The Posi TF is the first one; it's a horrible introduction to TFs for new players, and especially deserving of a revamp. Here's hoping the Shadow Shard TFs get the same treatment!
-
I'm guessing we'll be able to email items too, because the disclaimer about not going from hero to villain specifically mentions non-inf items. If we could only email inf, that'd be a strange way to state it.

Thanks for following up on this je_saist!
Along with upcoming fixes like having proper ATI support and the Ultra Mode enhancements, having proper field of view for wide resolutions will be another small way the game will continue to feel fresh and contemporary instead of old and creaky. -
Quote:As a general rule what you want to do for farming is to find a mission that is ideal for whatever character you're using, and repeat it. This is why so many Fire/Kins run the same Battle Maiden map. The enemies on that map don't have very strong ranged damage, have no mez resistance, and don't mez. So they play to the Fire/Kin's strengths. The only real bugaboo is my Toons that can't handle the serious mez that they would get hit with. Case in point when they go against Carnies, or some Malta with their stun grenades. I would guess I would need to load-up on some "break frees" to help them out. As for my MM bots/traps, I plan on dropping down to -1x8 and let the sparks fly. Get ready with the body bags!
I would guess almost no one farms Malta for that reason. I had an Elec Armor brute that enjoyed farming Carnies because the end drain had no effect on him, but again most folks don't farm them due to the end drain and mezzing. -
Which by itself is not a sin; we've all been wrong. The problem that I've seen is that when someone attempts to correct his misinformation he gets defensive and accusatory, and that's where it typically starts to spiral downward.

Quote:Wow, I'm guessing you didn't exactly score Mensa level in your your reading comprehension tests in school, did you?Ya I'm nitpicking. The title suggests GOING ROGUE EXPANSION, not access to two power sets.
Unless in your infinite wisdom & intellect all GOING ROGUE EXPANSION is consists of two powersets.
Sry, but I don't think you brain bashed me as well as you thought when you typed that response to me.
What do you think you're buying when you pay your money for this stuff? You're buying the Going Rogue Expansion. As a nice bonus for doing the prebuy of the expansion, you get early access to two power sets. Are you seriously asserting that when you spend your $30 you're not prebuying GR? -
I'm glad you mentioned this. How exactly do we make ourselves heard on this issue? Do we just use the generic "contact us" forms from both vendors? Or is there a better way? If Posi had given a specific link for each vendor, he'd likely have gotten thousands of people helping to raise the issue. As it stands, I'm guessing hardly anyone took action.

Quote:You think this stuff didn't occur to NCsoft Marketing? There's more going on here than meets the eye:The pricing model doesn't especially bother me - it's a value decision - what is more important - early access to powers or a free month? That said - clearly some folks are upset.
Retailers are very sensitive about vendors that create channel conflict. That's where a product is offered via retail but the producer offers a deal that undercuts the retailers. The retailers' sales are then hurt and they're pissed because when you're dealing with brick and mortar stores, every product sitting on the shelf is taking space that could have gone to another (potentially better selling) product.
Typically the result of that type of situation is retaliation. So if the COH GR box was available at a juicy discounted price direct from NCsoft, they'd find that Gamestop would suddenly be unwilling to give catalog space to NCsoft titles, charged more for end cap promos, ordered less, and put product in less prominent shelving than they did in the past. And not just for CoH, but all NCsoft titles. There are lots of ways to retaliate and the repercussions can last for years.
So NCsoft has to tread carefully by offering a preorder that has enough appeal to generate substantial revenue but not sabotage retail sales.
This is not an easy decision for NCsoft because they make a LOT more on a $30 direct sale than a $40 retail sale. You typically give up about 40% to retailers on wholesale, then there's the cost of shipping and manufacturing. So NCSoft can easily make 50% more on a $30 direct sale than a $40 retail sale. Do you think they want to leave that money on the table? Eventually they'll offer the full GR via direct order, but not so soon that it could jeapardize their retail partner relationships. -
Quote:You only get early access to the powersets, not Praetoria.Logic tells me if it was not stated, then it must not be.
So riddle me this my fellow nerdlings: will those of us who choose to pre-purchase the digital version of GR only have access to the power sets or are we able to explore the whole GR experience, which would mean access to the new zones on Praetoria (but not the item pack)?
Again, logic tells me since the redname only mentioned "access to powersets", I should take that as the ability to create new Pistol & demon alts in march & april respectively but still play in either Paragon or Rogue.
Quote:My confusion comes from the title of this thread: Two ways to get going rogue.
Quote:And this topic seems kinda important....one initial post from a redname....then no follow up from anyone???......not even the our friendly-neighborhood BABs???
If you're still confused, Memphis_Bill really summarized it well:

Quote:Nice writeup , je_saist. The last couple of times I purchased graphics cards I went with nVidia because of the problematic ATI support in CoH. But given that the devs are developing Ultra Mode on ATI cards and demo'd it on ATI cards, given that the 57xx and 58xx lines support DirectX 11 but nVidia doesn't, and given that in terms of performance per dollar ATI seems to have the edge right now, I'm planning on ATI for my next purchase.Short answer: we don't have official numbers on how the 57xx or 58xx series stacks up. We do know that the performance of the 57xx cards in ultra-mode was described as excellent.
As I said earlier, I'd have a hard time suggesting you buy an Nvidia card.
[...snip...]
Developers targeting these new features are using RadeonHD 57xx and RadeonHD 58xx cards as the reference platforms. -
You'll be able to take stuff with you. In one of the Herocon videos one of the devs talked about a new opportunity to be a "gun runner" by carrying expensive goodies with you while you switch sides.
-
I'd be fascinated to see any lag change at all due to ultra mode. My understanding is that UM is purely a client side rendering issue. Certainly framerate will change with UM, but I don't see why server lag would. The server doesn't care about the number of polygons your video card is rendering, or what resolution you're running at.

Quote:My impression is that Shields isn't the powerhouse you describe, for most characters. It's certainly possible to turn Shields into a beast, but I would bet real money that if we had access to the devs' data mining tools we'd see that it's not done much.I really don't have anything against Shields per se, I just dislike it when a new powerset is so souped-up it completely outclasses all previous powersets. Ideally, it should take its place as their peer in functionality, and the shininess of being new would still make it popular.
It's true that the HO trick is known among the folks who min/max builds on the forums, but only a minority of players ever read the forums to begin with. A still smaller percentage actually follows through on optimized builds.
I just don't see shields characters outperforming, as a rule. But maybe I'm just hanging around with the wrong crowd. -
-
Quote:I don't have any performance drops ANYPLACE in this game.
I will re-read your OP.
But, is it possible this is on your end?
I could have 900 foes on top of me in a Bugged Rikti Raid with 900 players with me, and I don't think I will get choked up.Quote:What would actually be easiest is to remove the hordes of Immunes that are sat on top of the viaduct, that next to no one ever kills. Immunes ALL have capes. That alone must chuck out a HUGE ammount of lag.Quote:I'm inclined to believe that the lag comes from the capes.
So P_P's new shiny comp can render zillions of f/x and capes and not suffer noticeably. But I'm pretty sure that the ITF suffers from true server lag, having to do with things like buff auras of hundreds of Cimeroran Traitors all interacting with one another.
So P_P, the way to test this is to get on an ITF and instead of pulling the Generals to the bridge, go out and fight them in the valley. I'm pretty sure you'll experience significant lag. -
Quote:I normally grimace when I see someone quote a long post then just add a couple of new lines, but look, now I'm that guy!Couple ideas to move things gradually down:
1) Ability to buy merits at a ridiculous rate- I suggest 2 million per merit or more. Something that people will complain about and not use. . . except for people who need just a merit or two more. Or people like me who are looking for juicy ways to burn inf. I think a million per merit is just not ENOUGH. Make it part of an April Fool's event. I dunno.
2) The "stop paying for the game, lose your Wentworth stuff after 2 months" option. This is a more conservative version of the old 60-day rule.
3) Lower the inf-to-prestige ratio to, say, 333 to 1. I think people will use it MORE if they get more out of it- perhaps as a blip until people adjust but I think the effect is there.
4) Lower the sellback price of level 50 common recipes. (Already mentioned but worth repeating.)
5) Expensive 1-shot goodies; consider a once-per-half-hour craftable item that recharges all your other powers instantly. How much would you pay for that? A million? Ten million? How much would someone having trouble with Lord Recluse pay for that? How about million-inf Tier 3 IO's, available for emergencies? One LRSF teamwipe could burn a hundred million inf on the spot.
6) 12.5% Wentfee (5% before, 7.5% after) on anything over 10 million inf. If you flip or crap something for double the price now- say, buy item + ingredients for 20 million and sell for 40- you're generating a total of 6 million of Wentfees. Under the new system you'd generate 7.5 million (the item and ingredients, individually, are under the limit) so, in theory, you'd only be able to spend inf 8 times instead of 10. Inf in the system should drop by 20% as a result. And people who are buying low are unaffected.
EDIT:
7) Guaranteed server transfer of inf at a 10% fee. Like using the market to do it, but without the possibility of screwing up and buying the wrong Level 29 Training Enhancement.
Those are all superb ideas, Fulmens. Even the price points you suggest for things like purchasable tier 3 insps and merits. I especially like the "stop paying and lose your auction stuff" idea. I hated the old 60 rule because I often let alts go for a very long time without playing them. But it's a different situation when someone lets their account go idle. I also think they should free up names for any account that's gone dormant for a year or more, but that's a different issue. -
Quote:Sorry, but that's a very naive way of looking at the problem. The devs on this game know that this is a small, niche game that is profitable but hardly a juggernaut. They know that if they blow it and alienate too many players, they're out of a job. I always shake my head when I see posts that portray the devs as arrogant sadists who somehow take pleasure in tormenting players. Why does the staff of this game think that this is acceptable? Do they really think they are the only game in town?
They know about the lag in the ITF. If there was an easy way to fix it, they would. Hopefully it'll get fixed some day. If it doesn't, well, players have been working around it for a very long time now by not fighting in "the valley of lag." It's annoying to have to use special tactics to work around the problem, but even given that it's my favorite TF. -
Welcome back. Lots of good changes while you've been gone. A few that can affect you as a blaster:
Many squishies used to avoid grabbing powers that were toggles like Tactics because it was such a pain retoggling everything after being mezzed. But now as long as a power isn't offensive (like a damage aura) it stays on while you're mezzed.
You can now also combine any 3 of the same type of inspiration to create one you want by right-clicking on them. Need an Awaken? Make one!
Another easy to overlook ability is you can now have more than 3 power trays up, and right-click them to choose their shape. You can even squish them against the side of your screen and they'll adjust their shapes.
You can catch up on the other game updates here.
