What's the difference? That you pay for a pre-purchase up front but pay for a pre-order when the goods are actually delivered?

That's my number one desire for enhanced AI, some aggro chaining: have some percent chance that a runner will dash off and if he finds another group, will aggro them. It'd add a little bit of extra tactical fun to the game without radically changing it.
  3. First, I strongly suggest to check this out. It's updated every month and pretty much shows ATI kicking nVidia's butt at every price point.

Second, here's what Posi wrote; note that he mentions not having tested the ATI 58xx series cards, but they provide better performance for the $$:
    Quote:
After demoing the Ultra-mode at HeroCon, one of the most frequently asked questions we have been receiving is “what are the video cards you recommend to get the most out of Ultra-mode?” With the holiday season coming up, we asked the programmers in charge of implementing the features of Ultra-mode what they would recommend. We would like to forward this information on to you so you can better work on your holiday shopping lists.

If you are looking to spend under US$100, then an NVidia 9800 GT is your best bet. For AMD (ATI/Radeon), we don’t have enough of these cards at this price point to get you good data. This would be the minimum card for enabling all the features, only at reduced quality settings.

If you are looking to spend between $100 and $200, the Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 260 will do you well. We don’t have numbers from the Radeon 57xx series yet to verify if that is better or worse though. This would end up somewhere in the middle of Ultra-mode quality.

Finally if you are going to spend over $200, the GeForce GTX 285 is an excellent choice. We don’t have numbers from the Radeon 58xx series yet. This would be able to run Ultra-mode with the quality maxed out (except we have no data on Anti-aliasing, so caveat emptor when it comes to that specific feature).

Note: This is based on our current internal testing and might change by the time Going Rogue is released. Also, a video card is not the ONLY thing you should take into consideration. Your PC having a decent processor and memory will also enhance your performance. As we continue to test and get more information available we will update you. I hope this helps, and happy holidays!

UPDATE 2-10-2010: Spoke with our engineer today, and he said we were seeing excellent performance from the Radeon 5770 card, which is a mid-range card. We have not tested the 5870, but expect the performance on that card to be one of the fastest for Ultra mode. Also noteworthy is that Ultra Mode does not currently support SLI configured cards. We’re working with NVidia and ATI about this, but you all can speed up the process by contacting NVidia and ATI about updating things on their end to get it to work.

I agree. This is TOTALLY not an attempt to arm-twist them into giving us more info. True fact: I have 100,000 close friends and we've decided that if they do a detailed GR reveal this week, we'll all buy it. BUT if they wait, the deal's off and we're all just going to play Maple Story.

I'm not normally one for doom posts, but I think that if a market merge doesn't happen this situation will get worse, not better. With GR, villains will switch sides so they can participate in the blueside market.

It doesn't have to be a mass exodus to have a noticeable impact. While it's true that only a small percentage of characters ever seriously get into the "purpling out" stage, I am betting that many of those players will look at prices and availability blueside and make the switch. As those same players are probably among the the more intensive TFers and farmers, they'd also be taking their disproportionate capacity for recipe and salvage production blueside too.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but due to this effect I expect the redside market situation to worsen when GR goes live.

I too can't provide a link to an authoritative red name post, but in one of the zillions of Herocon threads, I posted a comment about Posi saying we'd be able to act as gun runners, and someone who had been there replied saying that shortly after that (not on the video?) another dev qualified the statement with that "you won't have any reputation after you switch sides" line, which as much as says that inf won't transfer.

However, I've asserted in other threads that while infamy and influence are tightly coupled to factions, salvage/recipes/IOs aren't. Since we can expect to earn all those while doing side-switching arcs, it makes no sense to think that at some point we'd have to empty our inventory of those items. So if you want to take your riches with you when you switch sides, you can invest your billions in expensive goods like purples, then switch sides and sell. Let me emphasize this is all speculation on my part but it seems reasonable.

I'm not a hardware guru but I've been following this issue with some interest and here's my impression: for a given price point, you'll get better performance with ATI right now. The current scuttlebutt concerning the soon to be released next generation nVidia cards is that they won't change that situation.

I'm going to wait a month or two, since I understand that nVidia's new cards are going to be released soon and it's rumored that ATI may be doing a refresh on its product line. But ATI looks like the card to buy for CoH at the moment. Check out this summary from Tom's Hardware; it shows that at every price point, ATI is the card to get right now.

Right, makes sense. My guess is that they'll wait to put the prepurchase in the store until after the patch goes live to avoid a flood of "hey, I paid my money, where're my pistols?" support requests.

To play the straight man for a minute in case anyone reading this gets a bit worried: when the Magic booster came out and some folks accidentally racked up multiple orders (see Dumple's simple advice for how to avoid doing that, above), NCsoft reps worked with them to reverse the extra charges.

Hey, is anyone else a Car Talk listener? In their January 16th episode they had a story about a pregnant Madagascar Hissing Cockroach that accidentally got loose in a car, then did what pregnant roaches do. Hilarity ensued.

I could see beginning farming with SOs, but honestly if this is something you're going to be doing for a while, you'll soon have enough inf to IO up. So I think that objection is a red herring because it's just about initial conditions.

If you honestly think tanker damage is 'lol', you're doing it wrong.
I wouldn't call it "lol" but when the topic is farming, it's all about kill speed. A brute on a farm will for all practical purposes be maxed on Fury and will be doing far more damage than a tanker.
  16. Overall I agree with the OP's contention that it's all about XP per unit of time, not just what has the biggest bag of XP. I think your best bet is to get HeroStats. It's easy to install and use and takes the guesswork out of the whole XP over time question.

I hate to muddy the waters, but there's also more to consider than just +3 vs +4. For example, if you've got big AoEs maybe your optimum setting would include lower level foes but more of 'em? Thus the optimum setting might be different for a fire blaster vs. a broadsword scrapper.

I don't think it's a big risk. How would a wannabe SG spammer get names of offline characters? It's easier to do what they do today, stand in Mercy/Atlas and spam invites to new lowbie characters.

In another thread this came up and I wrote:

    Quote:
Retailers are very sensitive about vendors that create channel conflict. That's where a product is offered via retail but the producer offers a deal that undercuts the retailers. The retailers' sales are then hurt and they're pissed because when you're dealing with brick and mortar stores, every product sitting on the shelf is taking space that could have gone to another (potentially better selling) product.

Typically the result of that type of situation is retaliation. So if the COH GR box was available at a juicy discounted price direct from NCsoft, they'd find that Gamestop would suddenly be unwilling to give catalog space to NCsoft titles, charged more for end cap promos, ordered less, and put product in less prominent shelving than they did in the past. And not just for CoH, but all NCsoft titles. There are lots of ways to retaliate and the repercussions can last for years.

So NCsoft has to tread carefully by offering a preorder that has enough appeal to generate substantial revenue but not sabotage retail sales.

This is not an easy decision for NCsoft because they make a LOT more on a $30 direct sale than a $40 retail sale. You typically give up about 40% to retailers on wholesale, then there's the cost of shipping and manufacturing. So NCSoft can easily make 50% more on a $30 direct sale than a $40 retail sale. Do you think they want to leave that money on the table? Eventually they'll offer the full GR via direct order, but not so soon that it could jeopardize their retail partner relationships.
This may or may not be accurate, but it's my best guess.

I remember that too, although someone on the forums said that it apparently was (partially?) retracted later when another dev said something like "what makes you think you'd take your notariety with you when you crossed over? You're starting anew."

I take that to mean that they're serious about keeping influence and infamy separate. So your inf will be reset to zero when you cross over.

On the other hand, recipes/salvage/enhancements aren't associated with a faction, and of course you'll earn those as drops while you're doing the crossing-over arcs. I don't see them being taken away. So my guess is that you won't lose any items, only inf. So it'll become standard procedure to invest in expensive goods when planning to cross over, then selling them after the process is done.

This is all speculation/supposition, of course.

First, they didn't say an attachment could only have one item in it. So presumably you could send a bunch of items in a single email, eliminating the "one by one" part of your objection.

Second, this mechanism isn't just to send stuff to your own alts. You can send things to other accounts too, so it's more flexible than a vault could be.

For a while I was into farming so I have a pretty good understanding of the typical pace through that map, and this guy was just tearing it up. The only thing I can think of was that he was PLing an alt on a second account so he didn't care about drops and just wanted to max out kill speed. There were no doorsitters, everyone was helping.
