I've recently got back into the game after a very long abscence for most of my characters, so I am dusting off some of the older ones. One of them I used to play alot is an AR/Dev blaster which is sitting at level 32.
Things are way different now than when I last played this character( which was pre ED and pre CoV, really, though I did play villains for a while when COV came out) I've respecced to a more updated spec but I've not been very impressed. Maybe I am spoiled a bit by playing mostly melee based characters, but I do not recall blasters being quite so squishy.
In any case, I've been interested in an ice blaster for a long time so I am wondering, how much difference is there between the survivability of a AR/Dev blaster and an ice/ice blaster?
I've also noticed how I am not too happy with the 'set up' time Devices requires, setting up a trip mine or two, laying out caltrops, pulling, etc.
I'm leaning towards ice because it seems much more controller is and you can control the flow much more reactively than having to set up before hand and hope for the best.
So I guess my question is how big of a difference is there in survivability between these two and how different is the playstyle? How safe do you feel as a ice blaster and is it very controller-ish?

Ice is a control heavy set that at times can cut into your DPS but it has very high survivability rates. -

you should 6 slot the 3 end recov lines with efficiency adaptor.
and slotting combat jump is useless. If you have the doe, put 1 +7,5 lotg, enough.
as for the epic, consider this: you can do in AE the same map as in Warrior clan, but there, you built ur opponents, so i strongly recommend fire.
I mean, if you dont want ur AE farm cleared, just make it hard enough for anyone else but you to die.
baddies such as fire blasters are good enough.

I'd say Archery/Energy, because ranged boosted Rain of Arrows is second to none.

Some people just can't handle the shear awesomeness that is Archery, you should be fortunate you became bored with it. People's heads have been known to implode at the sight of Rain of Arrows' full potential. -

You could probably get to around 200% global recharge bonus but not without making some huge sacrifices to your build.

Okay so I respec'd into the build above and decided to test it out on an AV. I had Nightstar come up from the Maria Jenkins' arc. At first everything was going very well up until I got to envolved in the clicking of my powers and before I knew it, dead.
Second time around I tried to be fancy and not use reconstruction or instant healing and dead again!
Third time around I decided to just smash stuff and use everything except moment of glory. Turns out my fire/regeneration is quite the little bad [censored]! Took alittle while but she died -
DM/SR because DM's secondary effect is to hit debuff which goes nicely with SR and it is cheap to soft cap.

Not particularly, but Chilblain's spamability, damage, and - speed are the true benefits when chopping down the big tree (AV).

How does 3.44% defense translate to chance of being attacked as well?

Here is an updated version of my build, I found out that by slotting Numina's Convalescences:Chance for + Regeneration/Recovery into Fast healing it increased my regeneration by 8% verses slotting it into health. Please if you can find any where in the build where I can add more recharge, defense, regeneration, or hp please do so. In tough I have the Gladiator's Armor: +Defense slotted as well.
