The theological problem with defence and resistence comes from the different way they work, and what they represent. Once you're hit, you resist each type of damage seperately with the coresponding resistence type, if any. However, if you're trying to dodge an attack, you dodge it all at once, not damage type by damage type. An attack is considered one item, so it is dodged all at once, while a hit is considered a multi-event, which is resisted in parts.
Here's the following graphical example:
I set you on fire, club you over the head, stab you in the chest and spray you with acid. You would probably resist the club on the head and probably survive the stabbing, but you'll burn and disolve, because human beings have no resistence agains fire and acid. If I threw a cluster-bomb at you, which throws shrapnel, fire and acid, you'd still probably survive the shrapnel, but still burn and disolve. The same would happen if I threw 3 seperate bombs - shrapnel, iceniary and acid.
However, if I attacked you with a Burning Club of Acid Dagger, all you'd need to do is move to the side and punch me in the gut. That's what all you need to do if I just attacked you with a noremal club. However, if I had a flaming club in one hand and a acid-edge knife in the other, you'd be in rahter more trouble, because even if the club missed, I could still stab you, so you'll need to be quicker to dodge it.
This is not a flame, it's just a graphic example of how I see the difference between defence and resistence. -
No, there's still a gap in your logic, because you're trying to write an essay on 2 statements. How you read those statements is subjective, therefore you cannot base a conclusion on them. If you do, then that conclusion is subjective, and therefore has no bearing on the matter at hand.
So, what were we talking about again? -

I just cant believe that there wont be anything that is going to trip your trigger when the new costume stuff comes out ...people are ragging on new free stuff just because someone put the word anime in it ... good lord maybe if this is how we re going to react everytime they try to implement something they should stop putting things like that in the game ...(would be counterproductive though) and I realize its only a few people on the message boards and the great majority of people who dont even come here will probably love / not even care one way or the other about the new costume options .... ah screw it ... i cant believe ive typed this much on it.... you all enjoy your pity party im going to enjoy the new content.
[/ QUOTE ]
Absolutely agree. Just, what does this have to do with me? I'm absolutely for it, anime or not. I've been making an [censored] out of myself to drive that point home
But really, it's the same with EVERY expansion. For I2 it was capes, for I3 it was the boss changes and Invulnerability. For I4 it will be costume options. People just need to complain. Better that they stay on the boards complaining than coplaining in-game over broadcast. -
[ QUOTE ]
I hate anime, but I'm looking forward to the "Eastern" style costumes that were lacking in the game before. However, I don't think that all the new costume options will be entirely anime inspired. I'm hoping to see some non-anime costume options thrown into the mix as well.

They did say something about "world fashion". Personally, I'd like nemesis and council uniforms. Now that they're not nazi, there's no shame in dressing like them. Also, I like the backpacks of Crey and Malta, and I hope we get something like this if they're revamping the ceator as it appears. -
I won't lie to you, I don't have any red name post to prove it. But unless you call me a liar, I'm teling you that I've seen red names say that thing on at least 2 separate occasions, and I don't come to the boards that often, nor do I read long threads.
You can believe me if you like. I have nothing to gain or lose by covinving you or not. I'm perfectly calm myself, because I KNOW CoV will not steal from CoH's developement. Maybe just Statesman's post would somewhat decreas.
Honestly, I was expecting that was something everybody knew. -
OK, what would you like added that wouldn't fit under anime-inspired?
-
What a load of crap. Exuse me, but it is.
How many times must it be stated in large golden capital letters that THE TEAM THAT'S MAKING COH IS NOT THE TEAM MAKING COV AND THE LAUNCH OF COV WILL NOT MEAN LESS ATTENTION FOR COH
There, it's been said YET AGAIN.
A bunch of stuff you won't use? Gee, I don't like Kheldians. Does that mean "teh ski is falling" because in almost a year I have not gotten one extra AT I can use? No, it means I'm picky and I don't like it. Tough for me. You don't like costume choices you haven't even seen? Tough for you. If you care to explain to the general public exactly what you don't like in anime-inspired costume options, that would be very helpful. Personally, I'd love to have some more armoured options, some better looking boots, some more types of glasses, more shoulder pads, some kimonos and tunics and such. What's so bad about that? Oh, right, you wanted trenchcoats. Well, I wanted trenchcoats, and full capes, and backpacks, and jetpacks and wings, and helmets with opaque glass, and tails that move, and extra arms, or even some shin-high boots. Well, we're getting something which we haven't seen yet. I for one am happy. And if I have to choose between getting anime-costumes and getting zilch, I choose anime. -
Nice. I like your journals, but it seems you took about the opposite roadfrom me. I picked a scrapper, simply because that's what I do, yet I will always team when the chance presents itself.
My only gripe is stamina. To call not taking stamna ASAP a newbie mistake is offensive to me. I've had the game for 7 months and have one charater level 42 (Katana/SR) and one 36 (AR/Dev) and I STILL don't have stamina on ANY of my character. Simply put, it works either way, but stamina eats up 3 powers.
Other than that, I'd advise you to team more. I guy in his mid 30s was playing with me and didn't stop cheering about how fun teaming was and how much he had been missing out. -

Which will be reaplaced by group of alien doppelgangers, who keep ET's glowing finger alive in bio container in another dimention.
Barring my sarcastic comments, THAT would rock. We need as many politically incorrect villains as we can cram into CoH, because the game's too politically correct for my liking, bordering on the "Hug-hug" channel Jonny Bravo's mother made him watch one time. And to my knowlege, we really don't have almost any mad scientists, let alone mad scientists with a grudge -
I think there was an interview with Statesman somewhere (people always lik to those) where he said he'd give a graphic representation of a power's influence. Kind of like chart for each power. No particular numbers, just so you can see that "this" power thusly slotted deals roughly double the magae of "that" power thusly slotted, but it takes around twice as long to recharge and costs nearly tripple the endurance. Just a rough idea of how good each power is. I think that was promised for the future, not a particular Issue.

Aye, that's a good question. Do we finally get to have our comic books, or do we need to purchase the Eropean version on top of our USA verison?
I'd really like to have the comic books, but I wouldn't repurchase the game for them. -
Well said, but there will always be people who will read a post to have a specific meaning and insist that what they thing the author said and nothing else is what the author meant. Which is actually how the whole thread started.
-
Hell, the way it is now, they'd have to gut the game and sew it back together inside-out to make even level (though still orange con) bosses unsoloable. I think what Statesman was referring to was the fact that he never meant for controllers and defenders to solo bosses and he tried make it so blasters have a hard time. That's what I believe he meant.
I'm not even going to talk about that other guy continually twisting words to sqeeze out a desired meaning. -
Now, a good question would be exactly what do I, as a European, get for playing the European version of CoH? I've looked and looked and I can't find anything beyond "local language", "local time zones", "local servers".
I'm a Bulgarian, and no one will ever make a translation of a game in Bulgarian, unless it's a Bulgarian game, so the language point is moot.
The time zone difference never bothered me the least. I've never had problems finding people and the downtime was a pain only on day one. So, the time zone point is moot.
I have zero to no problems with servers, and when I do have problems, that's usually my provider screwing around with me. So, the local servers point is moot.
OK, I get a moot benefit, but as a CoH player already, I get quite a number of disadvantages:
The localised servers will have mainly German and French speaking people - both languages I don't understand. Some English will be present, but that'll definitely put a limitation on the servers I can use.
All my characters are still on victory. I have no desire to replay them, and I doubt I'd bother copying them, since they're just fine where they are.
I won't be allowed to play on the US servers. Of course, living in Europe, I'm a lesser man than the North Americans, so I have to be segregated in European servers. Well, as soon as I speak with my money at least.
No, I'm sorry, but there's absolutely nothing in the European version of CoH for me, regardless of my currently active US account. It's more of a British-German-French version of CoH, than it is a European version as far as I can tell. -
All I want for this Christmas is to know what that latest NERF cry is aboot. For some reason, I've been hearing about nerfs left and right for, oh... 6 months, and in that time I haven't noticed any single one of them (barring the Smoke Grenade FIX, but only because I exploited that). So, please, enlighten me what is it about Regeneration that got NERFed, I'd really like to know.
And my Statesman Clause list goes something like:
1. A brand new trenchcoat.
2. A cloak (not a cape, a cloak).
3. A cosmetic jetpack (pretty please)
4. New holsters for my rifle and my sword.
5. A pot belly (I'm serious). -
[ QUOTE ]
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
[/ QUOTE ]
Exactly. What did they fix that wasn't broken? Smoke grenade? Or was it the fire imps? -
This does not bode well for us, my friends. Dark clouds are gathering, of that I am certain, but I fear a deepr danger loom. You must be ever-vigilant and prepared for the fight of your lives. If this turns out as I fear it might, it may indeed endanger us all and you will all have to real heroes.
You'll all need to stop crying about nerfs and content, too. -
I'd give my right arm to fight another Archvillain, so bite your tongue.

Gang,
Sorry about the confusion regarding the Patriot badge. Quite simply, I had wanted to shift the badge to something a little more universal so that everyone, regardless of nationality, could feel like a Patriot.
What hasnt been posted is that we had planned to replace it with the new one the Freedom badge. No term better fits the ideals of America and all it stands for. In the future, standing proudly beside the American flag grants a hero this badge.
In games, some times some fixes get made quicker than others. In this case, we needed new art for the Freedom badge and so it takes longer than shifting the current Patriot badge to the statue inside City Hall.
[/ QUOTE ]
Seriously, guys. I have no idea how this guy can keep his cool after all the flame-spitting mutants vomitted so much bile over the subject. Not only that, but it seems he's come up with a solution that I at least see no loopholes in, and I'm not even American.
Statesman, if you're at the helm of this ship, then I'm willing to go wherever you sail to and I'm throwing my map and compass overboard. That's how much this means to me. -

I'm going to say Sept 29th, because that is my Birthday, and is what I want!
[/ QUOTE ]
Cool, mine too. But I'm leaning towards Tuseday, because I want it to be then. -
I don't get it. You mean riddles like "First it walks on 4 legs, then it walks on 2 legs, then it walk on 3 legs. Guess what it its."? Otherwise I don't see how we can fit riddles into CoH.

I used to support ApollosWill] on the level cap, but since my last post, I don't. Getting carried away into doing missions and hunting street gangs should be a perk of the game, not a deterant, so with the right storyline excues (and Lord knows, I have MANY of those) that should turn into a fun-built experience. We have a game set up already with built in game mechanics, so let's try to work with those, rather than against it. Even more so, characters of vastly superiour level could be treated like legendary heroes, bearing wisdom and great power - not cast out for playing too much. And since XP will not be a focal point, we can have a legendary hero (read: 20+ levels higher) help a group of young heroes out, much like when Cable went back in time to help the X-Men.
In short, I think the lack of a level cap will actually make the RP aspect of the game even MORE fun. And those that really want to role-play will be expected to put the story before the levels. You can't assume they don't have enogh self-control to resist powerleveling and use that as an excuse for a level cap. If I were you, I'd assume they do, since we're looking for volunteers. And if they turn out to be not as eager when time passes, I'm confident that they will leave on their own. -
That's actually a very good point. Someone once said "Who says controllers shouldn't be able to solo? Magneto solos perfectly". The reply to that was something along the lines of "Yeah, that's because Magneto is a lvl 40 gravity controller with full enhancements in holds, fighting gray con mobs". If that's the case, then all of the X-Men would be around 20-ish, with Charles Xaviour a lvl 40 mind controller with full enhancements on immobilize. That alone should tell you how level should not be an issue, but rather would bring a little colour to the role-playing. Having someone someone of much higher level will actually be a benefit to a role-playing group, more so than just as extra muscule. He could be the father/mother figure everybody goes to for advice, or the odl veteran or whatever. And if you're worried about the quest for XP taking centre stage, then let me assure you that I have a character especially for you and I have already given up on leveling up that character. If I want levels, I have plenty of other characterts to play. So for me at least, even if you remove the level restriction, I stillwon't go level crazy. But removing it will free me of the worries that I may pass the level restriction and have to stop playing.
Think about it. -
OK, it appears I'll have to agree to a trial, if you'll accept that. You give me the specifics of what I'm supposed to be doing and I'll write you a short (read: several pages) of story and you'll tell me what you think and how much of that you'll expect from me and at what intervals. Is that acceptable?
-
Well, what worries me mostly is the amount of work and the commitment required. Anything else, such as story limitations and characters I can work around. If the work isn't TOO much, and if you can accept long describtions of places, characters and events, then definately, I'm in. Still, some more concrete inormation would be nice.
