Quote:That's one way of looking at it. I usually say "Scrappers and Blasters are the bullies of COH. Controllers are those nasty guys that hang out with the bullies and hold someone's arms behind his back while the bullies beat on him."Personally I tend to view the combat breakdown of the ATs like this:
Tankers and Controllers are the Anvil concentrating the enemies in one place
Blasters and Defenders are the Hammer smashing them to pieces
Scrappers are the Flankers dealing with runners or darting in to pick off high priority targets -

Quote:Psst -- it's Invulnerability. Before the forum change there was a post on how to soft-cap Invincibility using Reactive armors and other IOs. I cannot seem to find it anymore (my search-fu is weak). Does anyone remember the build for it? Thanks for any help
This is probably what you're looking for. Call Me Awesome's Guide to Soft-Capping Invulnerability -
I agree, with the caveat that "the same place" doesn't mean the same damage per hour, but could mean "made roughly equally desirable by other incentives/usefulness."

Quote:You can rest easy. When Fiery Aura was ported over to Scrappers, the Devs made no mechanical changes in the Tanker set at all. So you don't have to throw away your hard work or anything else -- since NO changes were made to Tanker Fiery Aura, there weren't any nerfs, were there? No Tanks were "killed." Same old set it's been for a long time (since the Healing Flames buff and the improvement to Temp Protection. And those were BUFFS!).I heard that the Devs nerf'd the Fire aura because a spine/fire scrapper was to strong???? So they kill a tank to fix a scrapper, not a very well thought out plan. The best advice anyone can give a 50 fire fire tank is to make a NEW tank, that is stronger. I don't see why I or any fire fire tank should have to throw away all their hard work and hard hours and badges away because they made a character and the game changed that character into something else.
What DID happen in the game was the development of custom bosses in Architect missions. This was a specific response to the many cries that the game was too easy. As such, the intent was to make these enemies...well...harder.
Everyone now finds that custom enemies in AE can be very hard indeed, even for well-built Tankers. It ain't just Fire Tankers, although they will see it more dramatically against some kinds of enemies because they are (rightly) the less-defensive, more-offensive set.
Now whenever I see thread about hard enemies killing players who expected to be tougher, it usually turns out that they're really talking about cutom enemies in AE missions. That's fine -- those guys are the extreme; they're supposed to kick your butt.
So, are you also having this problem outside the AE building? -
I want ten million dollars and a pony, since the Devs seem to be granting wishes today.

Quote:Eagle's Claw is pretty slow. Aside from that, what's slow about Martial Arts? Its best dps attack (one of the best Scrapper attacks period for dps) is Storm Kick, which takes a mere 0.83 seconds. In the PBAoEs, MA's Dragon's Tail is 1.5 seconds to animate, Katana's Lotus Drops is 1.83 seconds. Admittedly the second-hardest hitting attacks in each set (Crane Kick 1.67 sec, Soaring Dragon 1.33 sec) give an advantage to Katana. Overall, though, the speed doesn't seem that different if one is using a dps-focused chain (as many Storm kicks and as few Eagle's Claws as possible).Erm...maybe its just me...but my MA/Regen scrapper is nothing compared to my katana/regen...I find MA is far slower. Its more powerful per attack but i don't find that it outweighs the drop in speed from Katana.
Still, I use EC all the time. It kills things pretty well. -

Wow, so he's the one responsible? That is a tragic bio. -
Quote:LM...you keep using the word Torrent...I note that there's a Dark Blast power (also in Scrapper APP) called "Torrent" with a 30 degree cone, which is a different power from the Energy Blast and Scrapper APP and Controller APP power "Energy Torrent" which has a 45 degree cone (according to City of Data). Is this possibly the source of confusion? Torrent is narrower than Energy Torrent, apparently.Torrent seems to be pretty narrow. I really don't see it being 45 degrees. I don't doubt Frost Breath may be 30 but Torrent is NOT 45. I think it may actually be narrower than Frost Breath.
Here's a question (using Controller APP values): Energy Torrent has a 24-second recharge, and Ice Storm has a 120-second recharge. Does that long recharge bother you, or are you spending the roughly 45-60 seconds (once it's enhanced and you have some other +recharge) setting up the targets with debuffs and controls anyway? -
Is there a new, working Dev Digest somewhere?
-
-
Well, you have more experience with the APPs than I do (my only Controller with an APP so far took Psi), but Red Tomax seems to indicate that Energy Torrent is a 45 degree cone and Frost Breath a 30 degree cone.

Recently I became interested again in one of my Controllers, and unlimbered my parked level 34 Earth/Rad Controller. Rather than worry about set bonuses overmuch, I indulged in some cheap frankenslotting. How cheap? Would you believe some level 37 acc/hold/recharge IO recipes can be had for 25 influence? :P
Took her out for a spin last night and joined up with a global friend who was on a baby Scrapper. I guess I knew this already, but it really hit home how much Earth/Rad can do for a young sidekick! My movement power of choice on ythis character is Teleport, too, so I even had Recall handy.
With Accelerate Metabolism adding to his under-enhanced damage, recharge, and end recovery, and tons of powers debuffing enemy defense, and Enervating Field lowering enemy resistance, the Scrapper really was able to contribute; and with Radiant Aura to patch him up the few times anything shook off my numerous hard controls, and Stony to tank the scary stuff (and EF lowering enemy damage to take the edge off big hits), I didn't have to worry about him getting killed by enemies that were yellow and red to me (and one level higher to my sidekick, of course). And at 35 I plan to take Mutation, at which point he can go ahead and die with confidence!
I know I'm preaching to the choir about /Rad, but I've somehow avoided playing it until now despite my years of experience in the game, so it's new (and eye-opening) to me. It's not that Rad is super-duper -- in fact, it has distinct limitations. I miss /Storm's ability to reposition foes I've got controlled; I find it a bit trickier to coordinate with the team than, say , a bubble-and-go secondary. But /Rad sure does have its hand raised whenever the teacher asks "What would you do in this situation, class?"
I like big area holds; one of my other characters is a frequent user of Ice Control's Glacier. So I'm doubly excited to be able to get EMP Pulse soon, slot the heck out of it, and start alternating it with Volcanic Gasses. I'm assuming that with heavy use of Hasten and AM, and eventually some set bonus slotting for global +recharge, I will be able to abuse having two AoE holds pretty frequently. Is that assumption close to the mark, or not?
As far as ancillary pools go, I have room to take one on this build. I am leaning toward Primal Forces Mastery; maybe the Energy Blast and E-Torrent attacks and Power Boost (to further my abuse of the big AoE holds!), although I might also want Conserve Power for when I drop EMP Pulse (which apparently shuts off recovery for 15 seconds).
Any further thoughts on ancillaries to go with this combo?
The biggest problem I foresee with this build at this point is that I have had fewer SG members online recently, and this build really cries out for a team.
I looked at Local Man's Earth/Rad guide today and my build is substantially similar to his template (substituting TP for Flight, and with a few cases of taking one power just a bit earlier or later). -
You're not getting uber stuff, someone else is getting uber stuff and handing it to you. Credit where credit is due. Apparently the Devs won't stop you from doing this, but don't pretend you've "gotten to" 50 or that it's any kind of achievement to watch TV while someone else creams easy enemies.

Quote:Behold the Law of Fives.Question: Do IO set effects stack? For instance, I would assume that the 9% accuracy bonus I get for having 4 Scirocco's Dervish on my Spin would stack with the 9% Accuracy bonus from having 4 Luck of the Gambler on my Elude. Is this so? What if I have 2 sets of 4 LOTG on dif powers? Do those accuracy bonuses stack?
Here's a more general overview of set IOs.
And this here is the grandaddy of them all for pages to revisit when slotting your character with IOs. -

Quote:"Dump" is a common phrase, especially in regards to information or data.Quote:So common I have never heard it used that way.
I got the meaning based on context, it just struck me as an odd word choice.

IMHO Ice/Sonic is very visually beautiful once one gets the Dispersion bubble equivalent.
Earth/Kin is a well-estabished pairing; Earth/Therm would be a nice jack-of-many-trades. -
Quote:Internet Explorer is also doing it. It seems to be browser independent. It happens whether I am logged in or not -- doesn't seem to be linked to my login name.
I used to have Arial font for years, had it in the new forums too.
I was typing really fats and must have hit some kind of hotkey combination; now all of a sudden the posts, poster names, and thread titles are in Courier; the forum names and descriptions and small help text is still in Arial.
Boy, I'd like to get back to all-Arial. And kick whoever put in that hotkey. -
I notice that it's only switched on this forum, not on the other pages I visit.

I am using Netscape to browse. Somehow I have changed my font on most-but-not-all of the forum pages into Courier. I don't know whther this is a forum issue or a browser issue, and I don't know how I did it.
Is there any way to restore it to...uh...I hope I can remember/recognize the font I am used to seeing.
Thanks! -
Quote:I have to admit that the AoE-damage types do better against scattered foes than Scrappers, all of whom (except possibly Spines) do great single-target damage? I don't see why a Fireball, or Burn, or whatever, is better against a lone "scattered" target than a Headsplitter. It may not be right for the bored scrapper to run off. Regardless, you have to admit is is more efficient for the blasters and defenders and controllers to "mop up" because the mobs tend to scatter at that point.
Quote:You mention that the scrapper leaving the others behind is unfair because he'll still get drops and exp for the "mop up." However, the scrapper is more than likely taking down three bosses and many minions on his own, sharing that exp and those drops. He does this knowingly and doesn't expect more reward for it.
No, but they'll set up the Blasters to do it just as fast or faster than the Scrapper. -
Quote:Maybe so, but in the playstyle described, the Scrapper left the whole team to do the mopping up, not just the Blasters. And many of those teammates (Controllers, Tankers, possibly Defenders) are more useful in setting up a new spawn for the team to pound on than a Scrapper is. If we're talking efficiency, which is the usual claimed reason for "pressing ahead of the team while they mop up," we should definitely get the resistance debuffs from Defenders and Controllers in place -- ideally before any Scrapper has launched an attack at the pre-debuffed enemy values, right, if we're being efficient?Lets see so your saying that the Scrapper should get the left over the one that run away which Range damage is best for and what the Scrapper lacks. How about we let the Blaster who is not great at taking Aggro and has great range damage take care of them.
My point is that the Scrapper running ahead and leaving others to mop up isn't about efficiency nor about better teamwork or speed -- it's about something else. Excitement? Ego? Showing off? -
Quote:You know, sometimes the rest of the team doesn't really find mopping up the dregs exciting either. Scrappers are damage-dealers -- why can't the Controllers run off to control the new spawn, supported of course by the Defenders, and leave the Scrapper(s) to finish off the minions with superior Scrapper DamageĀ? After all, there's no point in Controlling or Tanking a few minions if there's no point in Scrapping them, is there?Alright, I'm with you here. If it's a group of squishies and a scrapper who leaves before the current mob is well within manageable size then there is a problem.
Generally though, if a scrapper goes off into solo "scrapperlock" mode, he's doing it because the spawn the group is currently mopping up is too boring. The group should be able to handle itself when there's only a few minions to deal with while the scrapper tries to get himself killed on the next spawn with three bosses.
I'm just illustrating that leaving the other players to take care of business (from which you will receive exp and drops) because you can't be bothered or you are "too good for it" or you are bored comes across as just a little childish and egotistical. Meanwhile, sure, your Scrapper can engage three bosses in the next spawn, but so can a Controller that's built right, or some Defenders, or ANY Tanker.
And there's a point to controlling or tanking a new spawn, unlike the leftover minions of the old spawn, which the team really only needs to...well, to damage. And damage is a Scrapper thing. So maybe you should be the one to stay behind and mop up, if we're assigning roles to the other players. -
I admit to being uncertain how the strange ways Earth Control's Volcanic Gasses power works -- several "pulsing AoEs", being a "pseudo-pet," and so on, affect the way Inventions work in the power.
Does +hold duration make the holds last longer? Is there much point to enhancing this with the jets pulsing over and over?
How long does the power itself last? Recharge reductions can bring its recharge down pretty well; it's looking like it could almost be made "permanent."
Does the Lockdown +2 Mag proc work in VG? That would increase the chance pf hlding a boss outright...but VG stacks quickly and would temd to render this proc superfluous, wouldn't it?
Do end reduction IOs reduce the casting cost for the player, or do they only affect the pseudo-pet? Does accuracy enhancement affect the jets or merely the player? Do global set bonuses from other sets in other powers have any affect on the pseudo-pet?
Does anyone have suggestions for IOing this power using 30-35 set IOs? I'm partial to frankenslotting this sort of power (high value click offense).
Thanks!
