    S.
Correct. It's a police box - not the TARDIS.

Zwill confirmed that personally for me on the very first day I23 hit beta. But its definitely cool to think they're inspired by the TARDIS.

That said, I know some folks associated with the official Doctor Who franchise (we've connected over the years through various writing opportunities) and they say that although showrunner Steven Moffattis not personally aware of their inclusion in game, its very likely he'd appreciate the clever wink. So I think its fine...

Besides, its been done before (and more blatantly) in Fallout 2...
  3. Meh. Seriously disappointed that the Sci-Fi Costume set wasn't out today. Hera knows there's *plenty* of I23 content to play through without having SSA2 to contend with. Then again, count me in the camp that thinks its too soon to have another SSA series after the first arc just wrapped. I know Marvel loves to cram epic summer blockbuster story arcs down readers throats (which I hate) but that almost always it comes at the cost of barring the readers from settling in to the post-epic swept world left in the wake of the previous year's events and getting to know the survivors who still occupy that space.

Once SSA2 is done, I wouldn't mind if the Devs took a break and focused on Hero Signature arcs that just spotlighted each member of the new Freedom Phalanx (and their villainous counterparts). Get to know our mentors one to one for awhile before we journey back to SSA3...

Ah well, that's another week's worth of points saved.

EDIT: The background images *WERE* fixed/properly resized on my phone with both heads in full view for a split second and then reverted back to the headless version. The forum itself resizes just fine, and the old Statesman/clockwork image always worked fine. Not sure why this background is having issues.

  7. Finally, a practical use for gladiators!

....wait, do people know/remember or still play gladiators in-game...?

...which is why you automate the process per regional server so *everyone* gets the same 24hr window of opportunity regardless of country or timezone. We are dealing with IT engineers here, so this shouldn't be rocket science...

By the same token, I agree with White Hot Flash; just because you don't have time to play during Freebie Friday doesn't necessarily mean that you can't just log in really quick and grab the shiny. If they ditch the idiotically inaccurate name then yeah, there would be no reason to have the event disabled at a later time.
    Two things:

    1) Automate the scheduling process, don't manually operate it.
    2) Its advertised as Freebie Friday - not Freebie Friday on Thursday Nights and Friday Morning Coffee Break. People expect the event to be available as advertised. Its not the customer's fault if the advertised timeline doesn't match the actual timeframe.

If they can't manage their own marketing promo, then don't bother doing it.

However, before anyone complains too much, let's all remember that Freebie Friday requires someone at Paragon to log in and manually enable/disable it -- that it begins at 4pm Thursday and ends at 4pm Friday in the Pacific time zone where Paragon Studios is located means they can do it while they're already at work instead of staying late.
Ah! That explains it. I logged in a little after 9pm EDT Friday so they must've taken it down already. I'm not able to play during the week due to a hefty workday/commute so the earliest I can get on is Friday nights (and I'm guessing its always gonna be right after they take it down).

There go all my Freebie Fridays! Oh well, I'll live.

... just out of curiosity, what was the freebie this week?
  13. So I logged in to the Paragon market last (Friday, May 18th) and checked the Featured tab...

    - No freebie listed.

So I did a search on the term Friday and...

    - No freebie listed.

My last resort was to try the New tab and see if I could find it THAT way - and...

    - No freebie listed.

So was there really a freebie available on the market yesterday or was my account the only one that got superfudged?
  14. Fun bit of conjecture, but this article is way off the mark, and for a couple of good reasons:

    1) Going Rogue launched before it was finished. By all accounts, the game was pitched to include Incarnate content from the very early stages. As they got closer to launch, it was announced that pieces of the Incarnate System would come later but that GR would still be a hard requirement to play that content. Regardless of how the actual product looked upon release, the fact remains that it was an incomplete product at launch. I'm sure that didn't sit well with leadership.

    2) As games roll out, and production slows, companies reassess their needs. GR was no exception. At the time however, I was suspicious that the Incarnate content was being slowly piece-mealed out to ensure people still had a job developing new content (and it would help boost retail expansion sales and quarterly metrics over the long term). An admirable gesture but again that probably didn't sit well with the leadership. As someone who has hired, fired and laid off many staffers in my years, I can honestly say that BABs was most likely cut because he was too expensive for an IP this small despite being extremely talented. No more hassle, drama or interoffice politics than that.

    3) The free to play model was fast becoming a standard industry practice. From a leadership perspective, this HAD to happen if there was any chance of NCsoft reviving new life/interest/subscriber dollars in their ailing IPs while ensuring that they were getting the most income dollars in exchange for re-investing in dated technology. CoH for a variety of reasons was chosen as the litmus test for the F2P model - and it worked better than anyone thought possible (hence why Aion has since gone F2P as well).

    4) I will now put on my fortune teller's hat (no badge here, sorry) and say that there are enough clues in recent and upcoming content to suggest that leadership/marketing is going to try and re-launch and uber-promote CoH:Freedom in Korea at some point in the future. That alone should tell you the game is doing well (certainly much better than it was) in NCsoft's eyes.

At this point, I say let's keep our eyes focused on the game's future and stop worrying about its troubled past.
  15. Here are some *very* random suggestions. I tried to go for a mix of things - some whole sets, others just individual items and a couple of patterns that could already complement what we have in game. Hope this helps!

I don't think there is enough resources or will to do the type of Rogue Isles revamp that you envision that would bring up the population of redside to the point where you think it will. It would require an expansion type effort, which I don't think we'll be seeing anything soon.

The best they can do is try to play with the rewards and change the content of those zones one zone at a time. I don't seriously think any of that will make much a difference, especially since you can play any of the villain ATs from level 1 on ANY side, you can be a hero and still run villain missions by becoming a vigilante, and the highest content of the game--Incarnates--is co-op.

In addition they just tired another new "side" with Praetoria. How much is that area of the game being used today?
Funny you mention Praetoria because both it and the Rogue Isles have the same discouraging flaws that blue side completely lacks:

    1) They both contain a closed-environment system with a singular story to tell (dictator rises to power; player fights to keep dictator in check or possibly overthrow)
    2) They both are centered around an exclusive, one-man dictatorship.

Once you overthrow the dictator, the stories for those worlds are over. No reason to go back unless you want to relive the glory of overthrowing the dictator again (via alt or Ouroborous).

As a result, red/gold side gameplay ends when the dictator is overthrown - and the players move on to blue side. Granted, red side is BIGGER and has a more diverse choice of enemies to fight (albeit they're all villains already available on blue side which is a significant design mistake - cause why are you going to fight the same villains in a depressing, slummy environment when you can engage them in a cheery, more upscale, bright and modern setting?).

Praetoria is a dystopean society but design-wise it might as well be a zone in Paragon City. And when the player realizes that, coupled with the fact that Praetoria requires them to make a hard decision at lvl 20 (ie, hero or villain") then what's the point of playing in Praetoria at all if you're only going to be there for only 20 levels?

    Blue side works differently:

    1) It's an open-environment system with no mainstream story arc
    2) There is no one exclusive enemy figure/one-man dictatorship to fight against

As a result, blue side gameplay is a completely open-ended story that the player makes up as they go along - and they never have to leave or end it. Fight Crey, fight Hellions, fight the Cabal, fight whoever you want - its entirely up to you. There's no "one" overarcing story, and society teaches us that heroes *always* have a role to play -- so why should we believe there's an end to the blue side storyline? Villains however always end up in jail... Or do they?! As for the oppressed - well, they are always looking to escape from their oppressor... Or are they?!

Regardless of whether one believes in heroes or villains, the fact remains that only one of these three systems employs open-ended gameplay that keeps the story going forever and that's blue side - which is why blue side is still so very popular with the player base. If the Devs want to reinvigorate the gameplay experience in the Rogue Isles and Praetoria, then they need to topple the current one-man dicatorships that exist (which they're doing) and avoid introducing future one-man dictatorships because they're muting/interfering with the player's personal story as it continually unfolds in CoH.

Me personally, I'd rather see open-environments for all three worlds (Paragon City, Praetoria and the Rogue Isles) with tons of unique, side exclusive enemy groups for the player to engage -- but with certain caveats:

    1) Blue side is for PvE/Team XP bonuses with blue side-exclusive drops/craftable items
    2) Red side is for PvE/Team Inf bonuses with red side-exclusive drops/craftable items
    3) Gold side becomes an open-world PvPvE realm with Team merit/prestige bonuses and gold side-exclusive drops/craftable items

These realms should complement each other and provide an exclusive gameplay experience rather than overlap each other and provide the same or lesser gameplay experience as they do now (which is another reason why most folks always play/stay on blue side; there is absolutely no incentive to go play in those other worlds for achievements and rewards that you can't already get on blue side).

But I digress... Red side rules!

A competitor to this game has the same issue, the hero pop is three times as large as the villain one.
You say that and then I point to chain mail, leather armor and post apocalyptic costume sets that are coming inbound. People love those games and they want to play them and have those amoral experiences HERE.

The other thing to keep in mind is that morality plays work the same in any genre. And Darth Vader should be a singing testament that mainstream audiences can and do love the bad guys.

At this point, I don't think Jack Emmert and Zeb Cook were thinking outside the box when they helped conceptualize the Rogue Isles. There's still time and ways to improve the design for cheap and attract more players (both current and new) to red side - and CoH:F but it does require thinking outside the box...

I don't say that as an insult to the devs who used to work on CoV from conceptual development to final implementation but as a challenge to War Witch and the current team of Devs to be innovative and flip red side in such a way that this old hideout looks new again.

That's sooooo not true. Games like Skyrim, Fallout and more reward the player that's willing to explore their virtual dark side - IF there's good incentive to do so. Red side will definitely draw more players if the reward mechanics become exclusive/more enriching.

I always maintained that red side fails because the design was based on blue side morality (ie. crime doesn't pay). When red side starts rewarding players for being villainous, the whole "players prefer the heroic moral code" will go right out the window. Otherwise its still just a slummy blue side crime-fighting zone (like KR and Skyway) that's not worth exploring.
  20. Red side rocks.

Playing a villain now is way better than it was when CoV launched. My SG mates prefer blue side but they'll explore red side if I'm around. That said, red side is still a hard sell sometimes for a few reasons:

    1) The zones are depressing to look at.
    2) All the Arachnos contacts and their missions are uninspired (TV is a rare exception).
    3) Red side rewards are same as blue side (where they're easier/faster to get)
    4) Strike forces outside of the WST and mayhem missions are very difficult.

If the devs want to revive red side, I'd suggest:

    1) "Dubai-ify"or glitz up red side zones. Villains don't steal from the rich just to live in slums.
    2) Overthrow Arachnos. New opportunities for villains to make a name for themselves will arise now once Recluse is out of the way.
    3) Introduce red zone exclusive drops/rewards.
    4) Improve red side team inf/drop rate bonuses (the more looters, the more cash/drops to go around, and it would counterbalance blue side team XP bonuses)

These fixes won't solve everything but they will help.

But again, vBulletin allows for multiple/alternate forum skins. You, as the admin, can choose Option #1 as the default skin but it'd be reaaaaaaaaaaally nice to have Option #2 available as an alternate. My vBulletin site has 4 customized skins to choose from (some folks like text against light background, others like text against a dark background).

Definitely something you guys should think about down the road (ie a hero skin, a villain skin and then a "Current Issue" skin that you can rotate out).
  23. If Option #1 wins and they don't allow Option #2 to serve as an alternate skin choice, I swear I will not come back to this forum until the images change for I24. Its such an eyesore that I honestly can't look at the site for very long.

  24. Why not both as an option? vBulletin does allow for multiple skins to be available to users.
