To get it listed on your PAGE, yes you have to be subscribed. HOWEVER, if you just link to yourname.deviantart.com/friends (manually add the /friends on the end), you get the text list.

Just to warn ya'll, DA doesn't want you to have more than 64 icons (8x8 square) in your journal. They may yell at you. Just a head's up

Another thing you can do is link to your 'Friends' page like http://rowrsie.deviantart.com/friends/

The only downside is that is just your friends, not everyone you watch.
