Quote:With that in mind I expect the next companions will be 4 teens and their great dane.
It amazes me how many episodes the whole series has gotten out of the concept of "Run down a hallway".
The alien mole-like guy reminded me of the pacifist in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Allegiance
I'm a little surprised that in the speech the Doctor gave about standing "over your grave" he didn't say "I've done that one time too many". Not that Adric had any grave. But I guess that goes to show how much the current production team hates to work with the old show. It feels like Amy and Rory are just coming into their own. I wouldn't care for them just to make guest appearances from now on. -
Quote:I was going to say, before I saw your quote, that it looks more like a beetle than a bat.If they ever made a (Ted Kord) Blue Beetle movie, I could see him in a vehicle like that. But it doesn't look very Batman-like to me. The Tumbler suffered from that as well. They could use some Bat-stylistic touches, at the least.
I wonder if that is some sort of folded-wing design, using more jet thrust in urban areas and a fold-out wing for distance. It should definitely function like a Harrier. -
Quote:is Epic Scores the same as Unmasked? I rarely follow radio shows (no offense) but for this I'll gladly make an exception (assuming it does not conflict with tomorrow's RSVP office party). In light of this news, I'll be doing two things in LoT memory.
1) An hour of my weekly Split Infinity Radio show Epic Scores will be dedicated to him, during which I will play nothing but Doctor Who music.
And if I can know how to find it? Thank you! -
certain defensive abilities that took quite a while to distribute to each member of the team (force fields, for example) have been changed to AoE (or is it PBAoE, I forget) abilities for rapid distribution.

not only did he play the inspiring uncle of a superhero, but he also played a supervillain. Anyone remember Shame from the '60s Batman?

Just got done watching. Was thinking it'd be either the double Rory idea or the merged Amy idea. Actually the latter could have been interesting. Older Amy had a lot of baggage and hostility toward the Doctor. Had that been imbued in younger Amy, it might have been several interesting episodes watching her work through her jaded emotions trying to jettison them. Rory, of course, would have been by her "constant as the North Star".
Also, I'm very impressed with the makeup crew's efforts in creating older Amy. Usually, when I see a TV actor play an older character, there's some minor visibilty in what is latex and makeup, and a suspension of belief is in order. With Karen, it appeared authentic. I did think the hair should have greyed or whitened due to age and stress.
With the exception of Sarah Jane Smith, I can't think of any other companions I've liked as much as the current trio of companions (River included). Rory is amazing. That's 3 times now he's put the Doctor in his place. (the original being the you're-dangerous-because-you-make-companions-want-to-take-risks speech) Not an easy thing to do, considering the Time Lord is considered by a large part of the universe as the most dangerous being in it. I am saddened though that as soon as young Amy awoke they wrote Rory as if his two sharp comments to the Doctor never happened. Something as dramatic as this episode was for the companions should have lasting effects seen in future episodes. Especially regarding trust. -
Quote:I understand why it had to change, but boy do I miss the fun of the dumpster diving map herding. Street targets still had some meat on their XP, too.
Dumpster Diving: Back when we use to herd a map into a dumpster, small space and let the blasters kill to PL alts.
Map Herding: Herding the hold map. On my desktop I got a some screen caps of the hollows being herded to the parking lot by the AP gate.
Caps? What Caps!: Before we got a aggro/target caps...good old days of Full Autoing a herded map. -
Quote:The last episode: the one with the body swap with Janet Lister? Not exactly a strong story to go out on, though I get that they were trying to teach '60's folk about the evils of glass ceilings and all.I recently re-watched the entire series on Netflix. Good stuff. Found out that after all the numerous viewings of the series I've had over the years, I still hadn't seen the very last episode (and it was the only episode I hadn't seen, the rest having been seen by me at least twice each).
Actually I just saw the complete, restored-color "The Cage", the original pilot with Captain Pike. I'd seen portions, but never the whole until now. What struck me, almost like a slap in the face, was Pike's heavily chauvinistic attitude toward the women of his crew. Clearly Roddenberry intended to teach right from the start. It was probably much more eye-popping nowadays, when we've grown to understand more. Curious that the series begins and ends with episodes expressing how inappropriate it is to hold back a person based on gender. -
They have watchdogs! You heard it here first...watchdogs for 5th Column in I22!
(seriously, I knew these guys wouldn't hurt the golden goose, as did lots of the rest of you, I see. So why not have a bit of fun rather than adding to the mayhem! Sorry Zwill!)

And it's not just the accent or the mumbling... it's the darned background music being too loud. And way too many shows are doing that.
Joshing aside, you're dead-on ZM (um, no pun intended when I wrote that) regarding the background music being too loud. I've wondered for a couple of years now how the editors forgot that the speech is more important. -
Quote:Aww, common, the death run to Serge was fun. I've done it straight out of Outbreak to change a part I didn't like. And there's the other fun part: the "uphill, both ways, in a snow-storm" type bragging rights that come with such a run. There oughta be a badge! If I'm feeling like adjusting my costume, I hate the fact that I'd have to do a decent chunk of traveling to one of the crappy Icon/Facemaker stores (which always seem to be horribly out of the way).

I grew up with a neighbor that sounds very similar to Gary. Alex has worked at the fast food restaurants for more than two decades, has been taught to live on his own, in a plain, no drama way. (Which I can assure you amazed all his neighbors) But he'd be terribly confused if someone with an ounce of cunning came along. Chances are he might mention something special without the ability to understand the consequences. So I can see this poor chap's predicament pretty well because of Alex. -
Have long been in favor of a elevated station at south IP. About a year ago or so, I'd suggested on one of Nobel Savage's threads that ethnic neighborhoods be included as part of a facelift. One of those I suggested was making the area around the tech shop in IP into a Little Italy for the Family. I could see these concept going hand in hand with any update.
I'm fine with the speed boats idea, though both they, and the smuggler ship are a bit weird when you consider the lore stating no one wants to be around the water with the Luscas showing up.
There used to be a door/tunnel in the side of the cliffs of Terra Volta that we used to use for rapid access to South IP. Maybe they could reopen that? I forget where the other end was. The Paragon Dance Studio? -
could it be done by modifying the spider framework? I've often wonder (having no real clue how this all works) if four-legged critters could be worked off of the spider wires by "pinching" (for lack of a better word) the legs together in tight pairs, so they are seen and act as a single limb. I had thought something like this might have been done to the humanoid wire legs to get the Snakes.

Interesting. For some reason, possibly old age and faulty memory, I remember starting CoH on Oct. 16, 2004, and thought I'd started in the middle of the Halloween event with Eochai's first appearance.
On that note, I guess you're focusing only on the Issue changes? As you note under Issue 5 Eochai was no longer just for Halloween. But there's also no mention of Winter Lord's first appearance at that incredible power-leveling of a Winter Event in January 2005. Its not a problem, just a passing thought. -
Quote:The special commercial embedded on that page was a lot of fun, right down to the Lone Pine Mall sign and the Biff Tannon quote. Nike's made 1500 pairs of Nike Air Mags (sorry, they don't auto-lace, but they DO light up).
They're being auctioned on eBay and cannot be directly purchased. The reason? All proceeds are going towards The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which is definitely cool.
If you have some disposable income, you might be able to snag a pair for around (currently) $5000.

Mind you, I'm not a fan of merging the people-donut around trainers with the people-donut around tailors. But I'm sure the first time someone gets ganked by a dropship, they'll learn to play dress-up indoors. -
The second PM from Patrick I'd like to share, was on Dr. Who and was dated 09-25-2009, 02:26 AM. Several of you have commented that you liked his Dr. Who posts. I know he could be controversial, but see here he was kind and considerate enough to PM to help the poorly informed, namely me.
Enjoy!

Last I knew she had settled down on a future earth, but if she's Gallifreyan, wouldn't she outlast her husband and regenerate? It might be amusing to see the youngest Doctor yet travelling with a middle-aged granddaughter.
[Editorial note: there was no link in the PM. I don't know why - Rodoan]
The Doctor's history has been actually one of the most consistent throughout the series in the sense he basically has none lol We get glimpses and whispers of familial ties and clues to his identity but even his real name is shrouded in complete mystery. It's one of the qualities which make his character so endearing and makes you come back for more.
You are right though about Susan. However there is a big distinction in what you just said you have to consider. Susan was indeed the Doctor's granddaughter however was she a Gallifreyan or a Time Lady? That is the question. Not all Gallifreyans are Time Lords/Ladies and it's entirely possible neither was Susan. Gallifreyans are taken as we know from their families at the age of 8 and enter the 'Academy'. There they are indoctrinated into Gallifreyan learning and if accepted as candidates for potential Time Lords/Ladies they are separated into chapters.
To lift a bit from Wikipedia to save on time the Academies are separated thus
Quote:Each Time Lord belongs to one of a number of various colleges or chapters, such as the Patrexes, Arcalian, and the Prydonian chapters, which have ceremonial and possibly political significance. In the episode The Deadly Assassin,it is explained that each chapter has its own colours; the Prydonians wear scarlet and orange, the Arcalians wear green, and the Patrexeans wear heliotrope. However, in that same serial, Cardinal Borusa, described as "the leader of the Prydonian chapter" wears heliotrope. Other Prydonians wear orange headdresses with orange-brown (not scarlet) robes. The Prydonian chapter has a reputation for being devious, and tends to produce renegades; the Doctor, the Master and the Rani are all Prydonians. The colleges of the Academy are led by the Cardinals. Ushers, who provide security and assistance at official Time Lord functions, may belong to any chapter, and wear all-gold uniforms. Also mentioned in the Deadly Assassin are 'plebeian classes'.
But even in the Time Lord society there were those Time Lords/Ladies who had either completed the graduation process or stopped short of who 'dropped' out of the entire civilization to return to nature. These outsiders were known as the Shobogans and were even featured in the episode The Invasion of Time.
I think in the end the Doctor did the most responsible thing he could do and the most selfless act. He gave her a life that he could never have. She could live a life with a man she loved and perhaps have children (not sure if Gallifreyan women and human men are genetically compatible) and finally grow old and die. That's the greatest gift he could ever bestow on someone in his family that he loved and wish to spare the pain he endures of slogging through the centuries always alone.
Oh and before I wrap this up I'll take this quick opportunity to bestow a bit of knowledge most people don't know yet is always the most asked question I get from new fans of the show. Just how is it possible that the Doctor knows not only every piece of technology out there but also how they all work and nearly every mathematical equation, form of energy, how things work and are put together, etc. Well you could put forth the supposition that it's just the collected wisdom of 900 years of living and encountering hundreds if not thousands of different cultures and technologies. But even 900 years wouldn't prepare someone with ALL that information or how to implement it.
Well in addition of course to a Time Lord having a brain about a million time mores complex and efficient than anything else in the cosmos. The Time Lords are the oldest race in the known Universe. They were the first species to gain sentience and have been exploring and gathering information from every corner of the Universe and other Universes since creation. The Doctor himself explained in his own words his almost magical way of knowing everything and how it works or when faced with something new never seen before the ability to within minutes to analyze it and figure out it's component parts without being taught.
Time Lords who graduate the Academy and are granted the ability to regenerate are also given the Rassilon Imprimatur which is a symbiotic nucleus of a Time Lord's cell structure which allows them to withstand the molecular stresses of time travel and grant them a link to their TARDIS. This is what makes a TARDIS 'recognize' it's master and forms the close almost familial bond a Time Lord/Lady has with their TARDIS. The TARDIS has on more than one occasion responded instinctively to either protect the Doctor or his companions and even in the first Doctor's incarnation induced him to regenerate since he had waited long past the time that a Time Lord should remain in their original body before regenerating into their first life. In fact in Turn Left when the Doctor had died and been unable to regenerate the TARDIS itself knew immediately it's master was dead and was slowly dying as well. The lights were dimming and the console nearly spent. It had no reason to go on living either because it's symbiotic partner was dead and as such it had nothing more to live for.
This link also completed the circuit which established the telepathic field which TARDISes and by default the Time Lord/Lady generate that allows anyone around them to understand what everyone is saying even though they are speaking in their native tongue. In the Doctor's case he would almost undoubtedly in most cases be speaking Gallifreyian yet his companions hear English or whatever their native language is. This link to the TARDIS also is vital because it's what maintains and sustains a Time Lord's mental link with the Matrix which is/was a massive computer system on the planet Gallifrey that acted as the repository of the combined knowledge of the Time Lords.
The Matrix is part of the Amplified Panatropic Computer Network, or APC Net, which contains the biological imprints (or bio-data extracts) of all Time Lords as well as the memories of dead Time Lords, storing them in an extra-dimensional framework of trillions of electrochemical cells. It also receives input from sensors contained in the TARDIS time machines piloted by Time Lords. All Time Lords have a link to the Matrix subconsciously and is what also allows them to almost know everything about anything. They are accessing this vast knowledge at will and it is most likely telepathically relayed through the Time Lords TARDIS through the link already shared. -
This was Patrick?!
Aww, man, like everyone else, I thought he'd moved on. I was away 10 months, March being one of those.
I see his facebook page, with picture, is still up. He has one Activity and Interest visible to the general public. City of Heroes.
Hmm...He and I kept up a minor correspondence on PM. I think to remember him, I'll share two.
The first was over a year and a half ago, and includes his signature lines for you to remember. Note the date, January 12, 2010. When Patrick wrote this bit of humor, he didn't know it was my birthday, and his little revelation was my surprise for the day. Also the obit I found listed him as 32. Here he states he's 32 a year before. (sorry if the image is fuzzy)

I would personally have preferred a tailor to be added near the trainer (such as those in the RWZ), not the trainer become the tailor, but its not a game breaker.

my eyes are bleeding. I think Dillo may be easier to understand.
Ok, now that I have bandages over both eyes, let me answer that.First, a question: is she insisting that you stay away from any melee for the time being? In other words, range fighter only?
Hopefully not. The easy answer is build a brute, which is sort of a tank, but more aggressive and a little squishier. I found my war mace/willpower brute to be a lot of fun, though I had to slot for strong endurance reduction at first.
scrappers can tank a little, but they are best as melee with damage. I have several. My personal favorites are martial arts/super reflexes and martial arts/shield.
If you are high enough ranked to unlock the epics, some of them have abilities to tank (some of the time), but are more like a swiss army knife, very versatile. That may make a good compromise between what you like and what she wants. NOTE: a potential drawback may be your computer. Some of the epics are effects heavy, so they may not be good for your situation.
If you still want a touch of slugfest, but she's suggesting more range, there's always a blaster acting like a scrapper, a "blapper". Take the energy secondary powerset in blasters, it has punching attacks for those who get too close. Keep in mind this set has built in knockback, so be certain to use some strategy when lining up the shot. Bank the flying opponent off nearby walls so the real tank doesn't have to chase far. Then pick your favorite primary blaster powerset. Fire, for example, is very effective, and when it gets their attention, (notice I said when not if) you have your secondary to push them away.
My favorite blaster is Fire/ice. I use the ice to contain or knock down the enemy while the fire destroys them. For a blaster, its a pretty survivable set. Just don't forget the ice and go all fire on them. You'd quickly learn why ice makes it survivable.
I'd probably not recommend controllers, only for the reason that your computer is probably unable to handle some of the effects well. -

I was recently thinking that I cannot recall a complete core show cast from the 60s, possibly even from the 50s (maybe Your Show of Shows?), that has enjoyed such continued success since the end of their signature performance.
Nimoy, Shatner, and Doohan all had successful other series (okay, Doohan's was a kid's space series, but it was fun) all of them have had many and notable guest appearances on other shows, some have had significant reoccurring guest appearances (Koenig on B5, Takei on Heroes). And that does not include their conventions, voice acting, books, audio books, documentary narration, etc. Nor does it include their additional Star Trek work, which was significant for Majel Barrett.
Also..."The Squire of Gothos" was a first season show. Its premier date was also mine.
