Paragon News Roundup 11:00 PM Friday 24th September 2010
Port Noble, Striga Isle , .this often crime ridden area seem to have a new problem, Locals have reported a number of bloody corpses of both Family goons and Council troopers being spotted floating in the docks, both sides seemingly the victims of a third unknown party.
Our PPD sources confirm that recovery of at least five bodies, all bearing a range of savage bite wounds, burns, and large slashes.
The identities of the individuals are not known but at least two are said to have been wearing Council uniforms. -
Quote:Well, y'know Chuck, that's just plain old wrong.
I have a villain that commits no major crimes, doesn't kill people, doesn't kidnap them, doesn't blow things up, or anything like that.
What she DOES do, is sell information, any information, to the highest bidder. Then she'll sell it again if she can. She'll also sell people out too.
She's after just one thing, lots and lots of personal wealth.
yep i agree with Ravenswing she sounds much much more like a Rogue, however we dont know HOW she obtains the Infomation in the first place, but given the list of what she doesnt do i am guessing she doesnt eat peoples brains to steal the info.
TBH i can see many people will not bother to do the missions to make their Villains into Rogues or heroes into Vigi's. -
Quote:Yes Wolf that was a great post , in fact a Super postWell, bear in mind that IC our characters' alignments are as invisible as their names.
OOC, it's necessary to be flexible, as each alignment contains a range of possibilities.
and yes IC our characters' alignments are invisible, up to the point that the toon become know, and there is some public history of the toons actions, after all we are talking RP toons, most of whom spend much of their RP chatting about their exploits, the CoXverse has news reports, a level 50 vigilante is likely to be renown, and just as their name may be well known, so may their alignment. -

Quote:TBH i dont think it is a 4 point CoH system , as many toons still fall outside the HVRV alignments, as i said i think now ((hindsight is such a great superpower)) using the LNCEG as tags is a bad idea. The problem here is that some people are trying to fit CoH's 4 point alignment system in to a larger 9 point alignment system, and 4 in to 9 just doesn't go.
Part of my reason for starting the thread was to avoid those RP conflicts where a Vigi or Rogue or Hero or Villain turns up as say i am a Vigi because i do X, you also do X why are you not a Vigi.
(( 4 does go into 9 ..its 0.4444444444444444...))

i am rapidly moving to the view of not using the L N C E G tags, people seem to have too wider range of opinions on what they mean for them to be useful.
I agree with Fans , any person may have a mix of traits, some order, some chaos. -
-
yaa, i sort of agree Fans , the L C G E N tags are just handy short cuts , any individual is way to complex to be reduceable to such a tag.
I am using a very broad brush to paint the picture. I veiw the Vigilante as wanting order not chaos, but accepting that the socities current structure fail deal with the "crimes", and so steps outside the norm to deal with the crime, in the hope of preserving the structure. They want to remove the bad while retaining the good.
Those that want to tear down the current structure and replace it with thier own vision i would label as Villain , may be Rogue. -
lawful in the sense of order , not breaking the Law CB.

Huge thanks to all who posted, lots of material to work with ..
Here is my take on it, after reading all the good stuff above
Hero ..tend to be reactive , works to preserve the current society they are in, doing what is considered good , just, and right by those social norms , seeks to maintain the status quo , is self-sacrificing in all senses of the phrase, acts this way even if it is at some difference from their personal views. LG NG may be CG LN or even N, as N is a pure reactor to events, is a lifesaver rather than a crime fighter.
Villain.. proactive, a unredeemable baddy , self-centred, a fanatic to some creed or cause, does not feel bound by any moral or legal code, unconcerned about fallout from their actions. NE, CE, maybe LE.
Rogue ..often reactive , only acts when they feel in the mood , willing to bend or brake any moral or legal code if they have to, often is a social parasite, an exploiter of peoples and situations. May be mercenary, will always be looking for the best pay off, for themselves from a situation. May have one or two lines they will not cross. Tend to take the smoothest path to avoid trouble. CN, maybe NE but NOT CG..
Vigilante .. very proactive, a hunter of wrong doers, will go beyond what is the societies normal bounds to deal with those they see as bad, is willing to except casualties in the struggle for right, is self-sacrificing in the sense they will give up their normal life to pursue the bad guys, may be so focused as to lose sight of the wider picture. LN , maybe LE in extreme cases .
Anyone with any more thought please post away .. -
With the new GR moral stance options I have found myself moving a number of my characters to the new categories, while others have reaffirmed their Hero or Villain statues. Now I know why I have made these changes, but in the wider RP realm I have started to wonder how close my opinion of what makes a character a Rogue rather than a Villain or a Vigilante.
What I would like to do is to take a small opinion poll of RPers
What, in a simple short phrase, makes and/or define a character as a Vigilante/Rogue rather than a Hero/Villain, in YOUR opinion, I know what the in-game missions say, what I want is to see what other RPers think. -
Quote:yes , but beyond what your toon does in its mind , it is still in uniform working for Recluse , meeting all the named NPCs .Technically the canon for a VEAT is that you are a 'rogue' Arachnos agent.
You know sneakily putting yourself on to the Project Destiny list, only to discover you are actually supposed to be on the list?
and no the boards randomly log me out too CB .

Well VEATs dont get much of an option they all work for Recluse, and so have to interact.. or we end up with a huge army of rogue Arachnos, which give the canon covering them doesnt really work.
Also Villains have Patron powers, they do have a real relationship with the named NPCs, ok i dont think they get invited over for dinner or even coffee, but they will be interacting with them.
Also Vanguard , you work directly with the named NPCs.
Longbow , PPD FC, FP et al are different in that you make up your conection to them and the named NPCs -
Excellent , the last one was great fun ..i will go and sort out my villains , which have become a bit neglected by all the GR shinnyness..

Quote:i am sure as a super cat Ellie could tell one fish from another .. i am also sure Ellie would not like to be a dog no matter how good its smellopowers was.I think I balanced that quite well actually. Ellie's sense of smell is very good (as good as a cats), but not as good as a dogs, especially a bloodhounds. A bear is better, but a bear is impractical and would scare people. An anteater is better yet, but would alarm people. Plus, Ellie knows a dog's sense of smell is better than a cats,b ut doesn't know about the others.
Then, of course, there's the Rogues; which are apparently "full of far too many varied scents to find anything, let alone Annette". She tried and it was just overwhelming. As a sea port, fishing would likely be a major industry, and the smell of fish overpowers much! Not to mention all the bodies...
It would be fun to have drug sniffer bears at airports ..that would really make people think twice ...however not anteaters as they would think they where on the drugs. -
i have no problem with Special Effects and powers that the game doesnt cover, up to the point where they are used to efect in-game powers and effects, the very simple example when some one say they know some one is stealth / invis because they can super- smelling, hearing, see energy fields, have x ray sight etc. Here i feel game powers must the winner.
As Shadowe said the PnP champoins was excellent for these little enhancments that flesh out and make a character unique, in Cox its a bit harder to make the powers fit, on a most basic level how Super is Supersmelling ?.. there was a nice example of this in the Find Annette chat about FFM's Ellie trying to track, which had the best smelling power a dog or a bear. Getting the level of the in game powers balanced takes the Devs vast amounts of testing (( well i hope they test )) were as us RPer c\ant do that we have to try it and see, each time we drop in what seems a reasonable power and hope. -
gosh this thread has wandered wide and far.
i see what your saying about VEATs as armoured blasters, but no one like the pre lvl24 wolf spider guy, or plays a Huntsman version at higher level.
As for balance how much armour is enough to make the concept work, while at the same time keeping the damage out put in line ? take for example the Defender level of damage , would that be higher or lower than your example of a DP/SR ? what about compared to a Corr ? to fit a DP/SR into the exsisting AT structure would be tricky to do in such a way as to make the DP/SR a viable AT. -
if you want to see a MM's weakness drop a AoE confuse over the pets and giggle, or any of those powers that "Phase out" the pets.

Quote:i have to fully agree with FFM here , if you make a plot that means your toon is a criminal, you have to agree to be arrested and be out of the RP portion of the game for a suitable amount of time, not two days and "oh i escaped from the Zig ", and in the case of of the orginal version of the CB Tomb plot killed. For 2 reasons.
1) That requires the player involved to go along with the actions of the heroes, and remove Tomb from RP permanently. I'm not saying anything about CB here, but far too often in the past, heroes at GG have TRIED to take action against villains there, but the player hasn't gone along with it and just godmodded their way out of it.
2) OOC knowledge != IC knowledge. They can't arrest her if they don't know what she's been doing, and AFAIK, they don't. My characters certainly don't. -
Quote:no, sorry Wolfram , you would need to scroll back a few more posts to follow the debate.Sorry, but this doesn't make sense to me. Am I allowed to create a character and say that he's the ruler of the Rogue Isles, because Lord Recluse was put in place by the devs and thus doesn't count?
what was being said was that RP events can still be significant, even if the Devs have already set in place something similar..in this case comparing a Vangaurd moon base to a SG owned and run Spacestation.
In your example it would be like you taking ownership of some other ((made up )) group of islands.
EDIT and as to the Tomb issue ..what Crazy D said. -
yes , given up , so it is ok to ignore ? (( and yes i know as a Dev plot there is naff all game mechanics wise we can do , but we are talking RP are we not ? ))

Quote:Z i am not attacking your station as a RP event , merely using it as an example of an event that is on the global scale , heck the fact you could get DATA, NASA and DoD to agree to work together must be a big event in its own right ..)There's a moon base run by the US government, and an undersea research facility IIRC. The former is out from Eastgate, the latter... Armstrong Lunar Base. It crops up in badges and minor story arc details IIRC. Technology jumped up by leaps and bounds when the Rikti invaded and their tech was reverse engineered.
Zortel went to Washington to have a chat. D.C, not the state. The terms and conditions of Unity Station are as follows:
1: No Earthward facing offensive weapon systems. This means no orbital cannons, no lasers, no missiles, so forth. All that's on the underside of the station is the shields that protect it from the mundane (Radiation, debris, so forth) and can be bolstered to protect against the non-mundane.
2: It has spaceward pointing scanning equipment and shares data with various scientific bodies, and the military. Its purpose is both civilian (to monitor the stars) and military (To watch out for alien invaders. Several Rikti Motherships did leave Earth's atmosphere after all. Any unexplained/unannounced invasions from deep space can be explained by various means.)
3: It has regular, if unannounced inspections by a team of DATA, NASA and DoD scientists to check things are all above board.
4: It shares research done inside the station with other scientific bodies.
5: That it houses a system that, in times of emergencies, could be used to aid communication between relevant organizations.
The station's main purposes are for research, training, habitation and to provide a non-Paragon based command center, so that if a strike say, took out Unity Tower (Which will soon be sold off as the group downsizes their earthbased presence to a smaller building), that the group would not be left headless.
Also, Zorielle had to turn over some of her private research data to the government as well to get the go-ahead. They went for the eye-teeth in getting the best deal for them.
(Interestingly, the comms system was supposed to be 'Herolink', an IC way of facilitating communication between superheroes and quickly sharing locations and arranging back up to arrive. I just kind of forgot about it.)
Secondly i am trying , and clearly failing, to point out that there is often more than one view point.
