You can always tell when one side has taken a position they can't defend.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Pretty much. So why do you continue to take that side?

    [/ QUOTE ]

What we have here is an example of what's known as "quotemining." It's a well known tactic used by dishonest people who know their argument is false.

Quite telling of just how bad of a time the side using it is having and that the person using it knows they don't have a leg to stand on with their argument.

So, explain this to me then:

Why is okay to hand out things like exclusive bumper stickers, T-Shirts, and other items, but not in-game options like badges, costume options, or non-game affecting temp powers?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Because NCsoft customers pay a monthly fee for access to COX badges, costumes, and temp-powers. If this was a T-Shirt of the Month club, then customers may be upset at being excluded from an available T-Shirt.

    [/ QUOTE ]

They are paying 15 dollars to play the game. That doesen't, however, mean that they will have access to anything and everything.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Didn't you get the memo? It also includes a strong sense of entitlement to every product that the game spawns... For free.

I just can't even understand why, if it's something that they want to reward those who *show up live*.... The thing isn't giving out a glowing golden aura that says, "this is for everyone who went to X place oh and the people who cried the loudest on the forums". It's a simple toggle goodie as a treat for those who DO spend the time, money and effort to get to the meets. If you don't spend the time, money or effort, why exactly do you deserve something that others DID? They're not FOR everyone, that's why they're "special".

    [/ QUOTE ]

You can always tell when one side has taken a position they can't defend.

The fact of the matter is, NC wants to do this because they think it'll foster community relations.

As we've seen, it doesn't do that.

The usual suspects pop up, get hostile and insult people with blanket statements all the while not really listening to the other side, the conversation degrades, the community gets a bit more hostile. Then the whole thing blows over and we wait the next misstep by NC marketing to see if it's the straw that breaks the camel's back. Then the usual suspects show up, get hostile, insult people with blanket statements all the while not listening to the other side, the conversation degrades, the community gets a little more hostile, and we wait for it to blow over again.

There's actually 5 "sides" to this, not that many in the the "pro" camp have noticed. There's the people for it, the people against it entirely, the people who just want a fair shake at it, the people who could care less and the people who are simply ignorant of the whole thing. The "no" camp and the "fair shake" camp realize this, the "pro" camp is thus far mostly oblivious and lumping them all together. That's how one knows that much of the "pro" camp isn't listening and doesn't have a leg to stand on, they're just recycling flames with any actual points they have getting lost in their hostility.

The same happened in the discussion of the Freak Tank SDCC discussion. The same will happen when they give away the next costume power.

I generally have a lot of respect for your opinions, but implying that anyone who dislikes the decision made by marketing in this instance is somehow being unreasonable is simply something I can't agree with.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I never said that. I said I believe (and still believe) that the majority of reasonable players don't begrudge NC for creating exclusive marketing giveaways.

There are lots of decisions that either the dev team or NCsoft in general make that I either disagree with, or which go against my personal preferences (which are two different things). But thats not the same thing as saying I believe they are idiotic, incompetent, ignorant, unresponsive, or poor decision-makers every time they make a decision I disagree with.

I'm disappointed I missed the last double XP weekend. I do not believe NCsoft had an obligation to check with my schedule first. I can be disappointed in something without thinking that that fact alone makes the source of my disappointment deficient.

I also stand by my assertion that it is unreasonable to presume that being disappointed in a circumstance carries with it the presumption that someone made an error to create that circumstance. If I end up not getting the costume option, I'll be disappointed. It won't change my mind that NCsoft is being completely reasonable in its approach to marketing exclusives. I'm saying that with the full knowledge that there is very little probability of NCsoft being at a public venue anywhere within two thousand miles of me.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Alright, lets run with your example. Let's say, for the sake of argument, NCSoft decides for marketing reasons to only have Double XP Weekends for logins from the states of California, Oregon and Washington.

So, if you want to experience a Double XP Weekend, from here on out you have to either live in one of those three states or plan a vacation around being in one of those three (along with all the associated expenses) during the Double XP Weekend. And for extra fun, they'll only announce them a few weeks in advance.

If you don't like it, tough. Life's not fair and you have no reasonable reason to complain because it rewards people who are helping the economy close to their HQ (which is good for the HQ) and shows "love" for the people who choose to live close by. You have just as much opportunity to move to one of those three states or make sure you're in one at the exact right time as anyone else so, by the definaition of those for these con giveaways, it's completely an utterly fair.

Should NC actually make such a marketing decision, I predict widespread fallout, which is why they won't do it. It would anger to many people. However, the costume/temp power crowd, we'll they're expendable, too small to matter. NC knows this move angers and disappoints part of their population, they just flat out don't care, that part is too small to worry over.

Is that how things should be? Who knows. NC is a business. They do what they do to make money (preferably lots of it). They don't care if what they do is fair until enough people decide it isn't and it starts to hurt their bottom line. Then they care, but only then. Everything else is just background noise they can ignore. That's not evil, it's just business as usual.

Nah. This sucks. Some of us on the east coast that can't squeeze in a trip to the west coast for Pax are getting shafted. I would have preferred a temp power reward that expires after N uses that something more permanent like a costume set.

While I still think PA, PAX and CoX rock, this move is the fail.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I'm not beating this dead horse again. People will either agree that having an incentive for visiting NCNC is cool, or they're going to lament not being able to get ever item in the game.

    [/ QUOTE ]
... and why can't the in-game item be something as innocuous as a badge?

Or, here's a thought: why does it have to be something in-game, at all?

    [/ QUOTE ]

If it was a badge the call to arms would be FAR greater than this, IMHO. Remember Isolator (I know Liquid does), the current-ish discussions over not fixing the broken Empath Badge, Anniversary badges, and the (now defunct) discussions of old Halloween/Winter Badges, the addition of a new way to get Isolator and the outcry it causes because VIllians didn't have another way to get Jailbird, the inherent "Dev Whim" feel of Bug Hunter?

No, a badge is a very bad idea if the goal is to keep some semblance of peace. And, again, entirely my opinion, you would see people get not only angry over a badge, but some would pack it up since badging is THE thing they enjoy in the game and many feel they've already been "dissed" a bit. They didn't put a badge in the Wedding Pack because of the possible outcry and everyone had a chance to get it, imagine the outcry if only a VERY limited number (say 1% of the games population) could get the badge no matter what they did, and then compound that by doing it at every con they attend with a different badge at each.

The Devs know there's a number of people that stay mostly for the badging, and know not to rock that particular boat.
  5. [ QUOTE ]
    <QR>

Wow, what a pile of dog crap did NC step into by announcing this lol.

Hopefully by seeing the amount of negativity it's caused, they will reverse their decision to make it ONLY available to attendees of PAX and make it available to all via purchase in the NC store.

I see that as the only logical outcome here where NC can save face with their customers.

    [/ QUOTE ]

They stepped in the same mess with the SDCC Freak Tank costume giveaway, and didn't bat an eye. From the evidence, they frankly don't care if some people are upset over this and won't care until a large enough portion of the population decides "well if I can't get it all, I won't have any" and votes with their wallets. That's is the only way to get NC (or any company) to change its direction on something like this.

There's a good number of "completionists" playing the game but I don't think there would be enough to force their attention by exiting even if they all got together and bailed at once.

So, get accustomed to it. It ain't changing until NC is good and ready to change it and a few voices in the wilderness aren't going to sway them even if you have an airtight argument backed with the most sterling logic ever presented on Earth and a signed letter from the gods themselves.
  6. [ QUOTE ]
I want to know how many people actually show up and get this.

Then I want to know how many of your paying subscribers do NOT get this.

Then I want to figure out the percentage of players that you just blew-off.

I'm betting it's somewhere above five nines...

    [/ QUOTE ]

There is something like 125,000 subscribers, but let's call it 100,000 since the 125K number has a little age on it. If they do this one like they did at SDCC, there are 1,000 codes. That means there is one code for every 100 players or 1% of the games population can potentially get one of the codes.

Naturally, that assumes they have the same number for both cons (the one in the US and the one in Germany) as they did for the SDCC (if they have 1,000 per con, then 2% can potentially get a code). There's no guarantee they will have only 1,000 or even as many as 1,000 codes to give away this time around since PAX draws a much smaller number of people compared to SDCC.
  7. [ QUOTE ]
    [ QUOTE ]
I think it's pretty crappy that they're giving out a permanent in-game item that everyone isn't reasonably able to get.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Read my lips: its a marketing hook.

Its a great way to bridge awareness of the game in non-gaming communities - plus it is a cool incentive to offer potential new subscribers that've never played the game before. I mean, hey - look how much you guys are going gaga all over it. If its making you druel, just think how well it'll work to snag new subscribers.

So yeah, I agree with the Marketing gimmick - however, I think its a bad idea to advertise this on the front page. Yeah it raises visibility of the event for a select few that are willing and/or able to go, but it alienates the larger population who have been wanting some kind of access to this costume option for years.

Hey ho, life goes on. Come back at Halloween and be pleasantly suprised at what you earn from trick-or-treating (at least that's my guess).

    [/ QUOTE ]

From what I've heard of SDCC, unless they changed tacts, this isn't exactly a Market Hook for getting new players since several people I know tried to get one and were told "no" since they weren't already subscribers. They were only giving away the codes to current players (or people who said they were currently playing).

EDIT: However, it's made someone on E-bay a goodly amount of cash, he's thus far put up two that rolled in at $200 or more. So, if you REALLY want one, someone will be kind enough to gouge you on E-bay for it.
  8. [ QUOTE ]
Edit: By the way, did anyone else have a problem with the bombs disappearing and re-appearing? This happened to every bomb we attacked last night in Cap Au, usually when the bombs were at about half-health, requiring them to be re-targeted when they came back.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I've had it happen several times today, it seems to have something to do with a Stalker ASing the bomb. The times it happened to mem, a Stalker had ASed the bomb directly prior to it happening. I think the stalker's AS had some oddball effect on the bomb target.

Can anyone verify a Stalker AS prior to the bomb vanishing (and it appears to drop back down from the top of the screen when it reappears).
  9. Lighthouse, any chance of you clarifying something?

Ive read that the in-game jet pack lasts on 30 days.

    Is it:

The 30 days is for the global account; someone buys the card, applies it and for 30 days all their characters have the jet pack. At the end of 30 days, it vanishes and never returns even on newly created characters made after the 30 days lapses.

    Or

Is the jet pack on each character individually for 30 days; someone buys the card applys it, likes the game, pays for a few months. Three months from applying the card they make a new character and that new character has the jet pack for 30 days.

I currently assume it's the first one (30 days global for the ingame item).

I ask because this is a really good way to get friends who aren't in the game into it and I'd like to be able to give them good information on the item as a selling point.
  10. [ QUOTE ]
    [ QUOTE ]
You seem to be forgetting that people ALWAYS complain. People are complaining now because of the lack of information being given. And people will complain when the information is released. And people will complain when the next issue is released. There will always be disputes. Here are the options:

Release the information and have people complain about it.

    or

Keep it a secret and have people complain about the pace of the issues and lack of new content.

    I'd choose the former.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The two choices are release advance information that may be incorrect about things that haven't been finalized yet and have lots of people complain about being given incorrect information, or release information only when its set in stone, and have very few people complain about the lack of continuous and immediate access to information.

I'd choose the latter. So does practically everyone else on Planet Earth that is in a position to make that decision.

    [/ QUOTE ]

As the saying goes: "It's better to be quiet and thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it."

The Devs keeping fairly quiet on upcomming changes is a sound decision. There are still people who mention the Skills and Legacy systems that died aeons ago but were mentioned by the devs and never completed. Even the City Vault is a good example, the devs showed it off, it developed major problems and here, months later, people are still asking about it, it may never go live (they want it to, they're working on it, but who knows, it could easily fall through at the last possible moment). Someone has already brought up the CoP, IoPs and base raids. Had none of those ever been mentioned the devs wouldn't hear a peep about them outside of someone suggesting something similar on the suggestion forums.
  11. [ QUOTE ]
Aside from the two glaring errors (1- CoV launched with issue #6 not issue #12, and let's face it, 99% of the fanbase has had both games, so the ability to create cross faction characters is not exactly a new thing and, 2- if this is the last issue for the year, then we're not getting THREE issues this year) in this article, the article really doesn't say anything.

Kinda reminds me of that guy, "Hollywood From the Outside" who does the movie coverage for "The Onion"...not very credible, even if he DOES have new information.

    [/ QUOTE ]

There may onely be one error and it's a very minor one. They didn't say CoV released with I12, that said that both sides were unoocked for everyone with issue 12 (so if you own one you now own both). The error is that came AFTER I12 not with I12.

The second error may not be an error at all. The Devs have said they want 3 issues per year, that is a fact IGN got correct. I13 may also be the last one for this year, so that could also be factual. Basically, the Devs could be breaking with thier "three issues a year" statement in this case (for reasons unknown likely related to I12 hitting in May and I13 being rather large so it will be filled with bugs that need hammering out before it hit live taking up more time).

There's also the fact they didn't demo it at a massive Con. That could be because it doesn't work yet (meaning there's still a while before closed beta) or they simply don't want to show it yet.

..."/signed" posts are a version of bumping and likewise are not permitted.

    [/ QUOTE ]

When the OP has made a clear, logical coherent statement of "whatever" /signed is not a bump, it is a means of demonstrating community support without wasting everyone's time by restating.

These forums *are* supposed to be a place to express our agreement/disagreement/wishes to the rest of the community and the development team. Brevity isn't bad.

    Or said another way,

Where would we be if Marvel suppressed Stan Lee?

    'nuff said....

    [/ QUOTE ]

This was actually discussed as one of the hot topics, quite a bit, in some of our planning meetings. Having an idea to improve things, like, saying "Giant Robo Triceratops that spawn in Steel Canyon, especially if the "destructible environment" toggle switched on when it spawned, would be awesome" is fantastic and a good representation of your personal desire to see the game improve.

By doing just a /signed, you are saying "hey, great idea i like it" which is great to show positive sentiment towards the idea, but it's not constructive to the discussion of WHY it should be implemented.

/unsigned is even worse because a lot of the time /unsigned is like saying "no, this is a horrible idea" without providing justification as to why, which degenerates into arguments and flaming.

By providing feedback into the either agreement or disagreement helps engender discussion but also provides us with a better evaluation of what the community wants in a constructive fashion. However as this is a hot topic I will once again bring it up for evaluation.

    [/ QUOTE ]

However, many things have been changed by a large number of replies, not so much the content to those replies. If Arcanaville (as an example) presents a well placed arguement for pack hunting velociraptors with super speed in a new jungle zone. Odds are there won't be a heck of a lot many others could contribute to the idea as presented, thus /signed shows support for the idea and indicates I don't have anything to add that's not already been said by the first dozen or so people on this thread, but ido want my voice to be heard.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think what they're trying to get at here is: it's not about "voting" but discussion. You want your voice to be heard, and that's well and good, we all do; but for the powers that be, "yeah" is useless, it's merely a positive "vote" and "no way" is just as useless, it's merely a negative "vote." Without any added data/ideas/details both are just background noise that gets in the way of information.

In the Raptor example above, "/signed" shows assent but carries no information, "Woah, that's a great idea. I would love seeing that happen because..." carries loads more useful infromation because even if the Raptor idea isn't possible, you've provided data why it (or something like it) would be enjoyable to you (and/or other users like you) AND you've registered your assent.
  13. The only two things I can see that woudl require ownig both (and this announcement seems to indicate that to move forward with the IP they need people to own both) are bases and related content (Raids, mission computer missions, base updates, IoP, possibly the missions from the upcomming mission designer) and side-swapping. If you wanted to have heroic misison in the Rogue Islands, that wouldn't require you to own CoV and the reverse is true; all they'd need was a way to get to and from those zones that wa slimited by a mission-door like entry system, but to properly use side switching, you would have to own both.

As for having paid for both and refunds and such. If they decided, since I bought both, to send me a refund or credit me 3 or 4 free months, I most definately wouldn't turn them down, but neither do I expect it. CoH is over 4 years old, CoV almost three. They're older games, and this is just a way to retain subs and perhaps generate a few more (especially if they're gearing up for a boxed expansion to both). Besides, they already let that dog out in October when they gave the "missing" side away to all the current subscribers (an action I was against at the time for several reasons). Yes, I can see this effecting some people's decisions to buy future expansions (and I bet it effected soem people's decisions to return and buy the missing side after the October giveaway) and fostering an "I'll wait it'll be free later" attitude, and that's a danger they're willing to face and decided it's mild enough to basically ignore.

Three issues per year. If they're going to miss that goal it will be this year. They got a bit of a late start with I12 in May, so it might throw them off a bit (can't release in late October and can't release in Late December effectively tying up another month of time) but they definately have time to get two more out the door, assuming they're not having training/"gettign up to speed" problems with the new people, which could hinder them more than help for a while.
  14. [ QUOTE ]
Here is a question that maybe I missed. If I only go to the con on sunday, I am active military and cannot go any other days, will I still get the in game badge even tho the "special event" is saturday night?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Whike Zek's answer is most likely correct, it wouldn't hurt to PM Ex with your situation, it MIGHT help (doubtful, but possible). Although, Ex is likely already snowed under and digging out slowly from the storm of PMs on that very subject.
  15. [ QUOTE ]
I said it before and I'll say it again - I just don't understand why someone would deprive themselves of the enjoyment they get from playing an awesome game just because they can't get one dinky little item that would most likely not enhance their gaming experience in the least anyway.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Principle, for one. If a company does something (or a seires of somethings) you don't like for whatever reason, the most reasonable reactions are: 1) Forget it because it's inconvenient to do something about it, 2) Cease to do business with that company, even if it does cause you some inconvenience, 3) Find like minded individuals and call a boycott.

This is the only power the consumer has over a corporation. If enough people do it, the comporation suffers (possibly to the point of dying off) or changes it's tact. One person leavign over something isn't much, 10,000 is, and 1000 leaving over each of 150 "small things" is the entire population of the game.

The poster in question has done a partial "3" by posting an intention to leave, it's also a call to like minded individuals that the same can be done by them for a unified front. The hope is enough will do the same and the Devs will get the message and change their tact before anyone has to do something "drastic" like leaving.

So, if someone wants to vote with their money, let them, it's their right, just as it's everyone's right to continue their subs if they still like how the game is run. I even encourage such, in fact.

Please tell us what this special item is.

And please consider making this item available to those people who could not attend Comic Con. Perhaps for a small fee? This makes everyone happy. NCSoft makes money, and those people that want this item can have it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well... that would defeat the purpose of the "for this show only" part.

Having said that, I very strongly suspect that eventually, perhaps a year or so down the road, whatever it is will be opened up to the general gaming population. That's what they did with the sandals and laurel (sp?) costume options.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Agreed, but then again, the "for this show only" is likely already defeated by the secondary market and by people having friends pick one up for them at the Con that they can't attend.

Wow, that's a very exclusive item, less about .6% of the game population (and that's assuming the Con Salesmen don't suck up a few hundred of them the way they like to do).

It's also a pretty exclusive party given that there's 2,000 seats (minus whatever is taken by the Salesmen to sell online). That's about 1.2-1.5% of the attendance of Comic Con.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Unless this is included on the list of SDCC convention exclusives, which it isn't at this time, I doubt many attendees, let alone scalpers, will know about it or be after it. I think the scalpers will be too busy trying to get as many He-Man stautes, Yoda animation cels, Dwight Schrute bobbleheads, Veronic Mars minibusts, etc. to bother with this item.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not to derail too far, but you'd be surprised. I have an associate who pays for his Con visits with exclusives (and he's known to drop thousands per Con). He checks the sites and product sites of any vendors/presenters fairly regularly and plans his acquisitions accordingly and the "unadvertised exclusives" are where he makes most of his money since there's fewer sellers who will acquire the items and he can almost name his price later on. He never would let me on on whatever his secret was for acquiring dozens (if not 100+) of a give-away item though, much less his technique for getting his hands on dozens of "limited purchase" items for sell. I just wish he was going to SDCC this year.

Don't worry, folks, they'll start showing up on E-bay in the dozens within 5 minutes of the start of the passes being handed out. Back on topic, yes take off that extra zero. I don't see the logic in keeping the requirements literally impossible through normal play.

I agree, on a related note, the Devs have no trouble removing the "extra zero" on the end of the tohit buff on the accolades they altered in Issue 12, even though many people have earned those (especially for the STF to hit Mako when he eludes) and now "expect" that kind of tohit buff on it. Those os us on the boards know it was an error that's been around for a long time, and expected it to change. I don't see why Posi has such a hard line on this one error they made on a badge. Admit the error (done), change it and the whole problem vanishes.

I also know several of the Empath badge holders have publically stated, on these boards several times they wouldn't be one bit upset if the requirement was changed to something that actually made sense, and at least one has apologized for earning it since the Devs used him (and others like him) as an excuse not to change it.

I'm a tolerant guy. I understand the nature of waiting in line to get into an event. However, I have to say that I'm not entirely satisfied by the manner the wedding event has been handled.

    1) If you wanted us to line up in lines to enter the event then put in controls to direct the people. Rope lines, funnels, any sort of crowd control would be nice. I laughed like most when Castle KO'd people close to the Usher in Atlas. I even got him to laugh when I said it was like "Look! It's the WHO!" [that's an old person joke for all the folks under 30 based on a crowd stampede at a WHO concern years ago ]. You need better crowd control for events like the wedding.

    2) The equity of the access to the event was lacking. Making it "whoever can click on the Usher through the effect of the Force Bubble" lacked balance. Why did this happnen? Not thinking through the methodology of accessing the event is why. Plan for orderly entry next time. The shotgun approach is a poor substitute for proper planning.

    QFT.

I'm standing, right now, on the first stair - where I've been since we were told to "Form a line," what, over an hour ago.

    Haven't moved.

    How is this being handled?

    - Watch for Castle to start a force bubble, shoving everyone (everyone the client can draw, at least) back.

    - Pray you see it in local when he yells "Go!"

    - Make mad rush to the usher, hope you can click on him before it fills.

So, the folks doign what we're *asked* are getting penalized. The people being a mob are getting in.

Very, VERY poorly planned and handled.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Completely agree. The mob rules the entry to the event. If you do as you're told, forget it, the Devs didnt' set up a way to actually control the crowd in a way that doing as instructed is actually meaningful.

Ideally (and I seriously doubt the tech exists for it) these events would work off a random lottery. 15 minutes before the event opens for "seating" you can go click the contact. He assigns you a "number." When the event seatign start,s the system randomly pulls 100 numbers, those people get in. No mobs, no pushing, no shoving. Once you click the contact, you're done and can go about your business until the next seating is announced (if you didn't get in).

Failing that, a forced line. A single, narrow corridor with a low celing with the contact at the end. No pushing or bumping (course, it would have to be able to accomidate about 150 people in a line, so logistical troubles are still a concern).

Failing that, iron fisted "watchers" who look for people not doing as instructed and server boot them (or a 24 hour server ban from test). It's extreme, but it will do the trick.

Basically, we all knew this event was going to be "dog eat dog" and "right of way goes to the biggest [censored]." The Devs should have as well (it's not like they don't see the zone numbers shoot up when just one shows up in the D on a live server). Sadly, they failed to plan accordingly.

I assume it's been mentioned. What's up with the bridal train/hair color issue. Seems the outside train color is the same as the hair color (i.e you want a white train you get white hair) and you cannot even set the inside color of the train.

According to the patch notes, the current patch on test solves that issue.
