That is a point, of course. You just implement basically the same thing for all the pools with different special effects.

SS: Hyper-run: You move so fast you just blur away from where you are, vibrate through the war walls, and appear at your target.
Fly: Hypersonic: You take off upward and land at your target.
Jump: Hulk-mode: Same as Fly, but you jump instead of flying.

Still almost certainly too powerful, and the UI would be horrible. Probably not exploitable since the devs would be in control of the target locations.
  2. No one seemed to be demanding the swords. They did, afterall, just appear to be swords. What could swords possibly do against guns?

Annette ran a connection through to the Vigil comms net and made sure she had her communications set up with Bodi, and then Ni and Annette waited, though one thing did pass through Annette's mind as she sat there. "This guy is such a jerk."
  3. I'd have to say Days_ has the overall concept pinned, people hate not knowing what's going to happen.

    However...

Oh, please. This is the Interwebz. If NCSoft came out and said the EU servers would stay as they are for time immemorial, backing it up with a legally binding contract signed by the CEO and the US President, half the population wouldn't believe it, and the other half would start complaining that they want a server/server list merge and keeping the EU servers is wrong.

    They can't win. Face it.
  4. Ni slid quietly into control while Annette shook off the effects of the shock pulse. There was barely a fraction of a second of incapacitation and she watched calmly as the various fake fans took their positions. By the time Annette was growling obsenities in the back of her head and ready to join the fun, Ni had activated their tactical environment and mapped out the layout of the hall with the various combatants marked.

Listening to the Spoiler she thought "What do we do about the swords?"

"Hand them over if they ask for them," Annette replied. "It won't make any difference."

    Ni waited.
  5. MMO database servers are usually custom designs, not SQL. It is not safe to assume that it is 'safe' or easy to expand anything without it having weird repercusions on other parts of the system.

Nope. Flower Knight was a later addition. The Hero tutorial got revamped a few years ago. Nothing major, just pretty much as Sam said: better explanations and the use of an assist NPC to demonstarte the technology.
  7. It would actually be more or less new, and add an extra option to the radio mission list, though it sort of amounts to a 'Go arrest this guy' mission at its base level, just on an open map instead of an interior.

Flavour-wise, it is very good for radio missions.
  8. To reiterate my comments in the Roleplay forum where this was also posted...

No, sorry, I don't think you understand the point of roleplaying, personally, but you definately can't assume that roleplayers are going to agree with you.

In my experience, going back to well before CoH existed, long bio spaces are a terrible idea. If you'd like, I can enumerate various instances where long bios have belonged to some of the most awesomely bad roleplayers I've ever met, but I'd rather not. The only long bios I've ever read which were worth reading were parodies of the lousy ones written by other people.

Roleplaying is about talking to people and finding things out about their characters by interaction. If I can pull up a screen of information about your character which tells me everything I need to know, what's the point in talking to you? Having your character's life story written up there is an ego trip, not a roleplay aid.

The other major abuse of large bios is for power-gaming. The bio is usually a long list of the fake powers someone has and the outlandish justification for them. That's not roleplay either.

The bio we have is long enough for a good physical description. If you want something longer, put it on a web page and put the link in your bio.

Finally, this game has gone for about 6 years with the bio length it has. Increasing it has been suggested so many times it's untrue. WoW still has no official character bio data. It's really not that popular an idea, and it sure isn't as popular as you think with those who roleplay.
  9. I'd accept that as a concept for a revamp of existing hazard zones. There's really no need to do new areas for this. Half the city isn't being used by 90% of the player population.

Admittedly, what you're both proposing wouldn't change that since that kind of zone generally requires a fairly full team just to survive.

    Safety Dance

I could never hope to come up to your level, Z, but I gotta get lucky sometime.

    Safety Dance

I couldn't think of a good title for this really, but Safety Dance works.

In RP, Annette said she would go around to Rauri's place (Rauri who definitely isn't a registered hero, honest) after his wife got a bit scared during a Rikti raid. Well, your husband coming home covere in blood will do that. Anyway, here's the little story of Annette giving her safety lecture to Rauri, Helena and their two tiny demons... um, daughters.

    Safety Dance
  13. First off, read Scarlet Shocker's thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=213380
That way, I don't have to explain who Squirrel Girl is, but just in case here's her Wikipedia Page.

Anyway, Scarlet's thread got me thinking. Have you ever had a joke or parody character turn from parody to serious?

Mine was Velvet Venge(a)nce. Version one was created on the Test server when the body sliders went in. Over six-foot, maxed out legs, maxed out breasts, dressed in a martial arts tunic and thigh boots, all in shades of violet because that's what the random selection came up as. I ran her around on Test for a few minutes and came up with this insane background for her: she was an ex-Playboy model who had retired to raise a family and then her family had been killed, so she was out for revenge. And that was that.

Version two appeared on Union because I needed a character to play while my main was out of play for a couple of weeks. So I recreated Velvet on live and sat her down at Galaxy Girl. After a month, she was mothering half the statue. People actually respected the leggy blond joke character. She ended up with an adopted daughter, and a successful business.

I'm now on version three, dual-blades instead of katana, but mostly she shows up when I fancy a change as an RP character.

Yah. I do like the Rikti Mother Ship idea, but have you noticed that the sewers were the only hazard zones anyone ever went in, and that was before AE. You don't get people plowing through Eden, or street-cleaning in the War Zone. Most people think it's a better idea to 'gentrify' the hazard zones, as they did with Faultline. There are no hazard zones in the Rogue Isles, they'd figured out just how popular they were even then.

I do like the Mothership idea though. That'd be cool. The problem would be getting in.
  16. I have to wonder: what's the difference between a zone like this and, say, a hazard zone?
  17. I play CoH because I like the roleplay environment. If someone can find a way to fit that to rats in little boxes, then I'll be a little surprised.

Not that it'll help you much.

A low level power which cannot be slotted is glorious. It lets you put those valuable enhancement slots in other places. I honestly don't understand what the problem is with having an unslottable power when there's no way to usefully enhance that power.
  22. "I can let Ni out and we can be psychos together," Annette said, and then winced at the mental kick she got. "Or not. Somehow I think a display of fancy sword work in a confined space might be counter-productive."

She looked down at the grinning young man in front of her holding up an autograph book. The look of co-mingled lust and admiration was almost too much. "Don't I remember you from the Wizard's Well? I'm sure I've signed this before. Nevermind, hand it over."

  24. Apparently, measuring the multiverse is harder than you might think. You don't just go down to Portal Corps and say, "just chuck me over that Dark Energy Scanner would you?" In fact, scientists (they don't even realise the word should have an exclamation mark) don't even like the idea of a multiverse, because they couldn't figure out how to measure it and that might have been a problem.

Luckily, some nice person has figured it out:

    http://www.newscientist.com/article/...ultiverse.html

The comment at the top of page two saying that the entire universe could just collapse any time it likes into a lower energy state is a bit of a downer, but there you go, Portal Corps could have a future afterall.

(I'll leave out my rant about scientists disliking theories because they don't agree with how they think things should be. Save that for a later date. )

DP is fun. Freezing someone into a block of ice and then gunning them down is fun.

If you can be bothered to learn how to play it, it's a perfectly good set.
