Humbly, PvP is more suited to the more FPS-style system we see in the video. PvP in a game with the gameplay style we see here in the live system is never going to satisfy real PvPers because there's no real player skill in the combat. The best the player can do is make up for deficiencies in his build by knowing when to do X, or how to move well in combat.
On the other hand, it is an excellent environment for PKers since it's quite possible to have a toon or team of toons which can gank just about anything without having any real skill.
You can always change the design of software to reflect changes in what it is required to do. However, some things are best if they are taken into account in the core design. I honestly believe that PvP could have been a huge amount better, if it had been designed into the core functionality. As it is, I don't think that's the case, and the video does not prove in any way that I'm wrong. It simply states that PvP was on a very, very big feature list, most of which got left on the shelf. -

I think the Dev's chose to work on PvE first but always intended putting PvP in. Probably due to limited resources they couldn't do both at the same time without delaying the release of the game.
[/ QUOTE ]
Two ways of looking at it:
1. Yes, the 'intended to put it in', but that isn't the same as 'it was designed in'. That's what I said in my last post.
2. Actually, considering what they say about the game in the video, the whole design philosophy changed between then and the game's release. The game in that video was massively more complex than CoH was on release, and even more complex than CoX now is, or will be after I9. The original design may have had PvP in it, but that isn't the game they implemented, so saying it was 'intended to be there from the start' isn't relevent. -

As something going on in the background, I appreciate the effort being gone to, as it shows that people are interested in moving the plot of the city forward, which is a good thing as long as it's not taken too far.
[/ QUOTE ]
Could I ask that we keep this thread away from discussion of why the plot is good or bad or indifferent? I do not want someone involved in said plot to start discussing why I (or anyone else) is wrong to think we can't be involved. I just want some idea of wether there's a community out there I could actually get involved with. -

I remember the thread about that vid. It was interesting. The conclusion was that PvP had been planned for since the start of CoH.
[/ QUOTE ]
Okay, I watched it.
I wish I was playing that instead of what we have. Wow that looks like a really stunning game! Unfortunately most of the really amazing ideas got chucked out before implementation, and saying that PvP 'was designed for' based on that is failing to understand either the software industry or marketing. You'll notice there isn't actually a demo of PvP in there? PvP was on the features list, the very way it has been implemented suggests it wasn't designed into the game.
Another way of looking at it is, yes, PvP was designed in from scratch. However, it was designed into an RPG with FPS elements which had gadgets, seven origins, etc. PvP was actually implemented in a totally different game so it might as well not have been thought of in the original version. -
Last time I was at PD, the only people there were involved in it, or were villains.

The Search system on these forums sucks big time. I tried finding it, but I think I'll be happier if someone knows which thread it was in and I can go hunt it down, or the original guy can give me a link on YouTube.

Check the post above you.

This is kind of a straw poll. I couldn't think of a title which would say what the thread was about and not put people's backs up before they started reading...
I'd like to know how many people out there do not intend to take part in the Heroes Among Us (or whatever) plot? If it's as few as I think it is, I'll be quitting the game in all likelyhood.
I have an entirely OOC objection to plots like this, and this one in particular, and being forced to take part in it or do no roleplaying leaves me with little option.
Please note, I'm not trying to persuade people to not take part in that plot. I'm not asking that the plot be shut down (partially because I wouldn't be listened to, and partially because I have no right to). I'm not saying what objection I have so that this becomes another flame war. I'd just like to know whether anyone else would rather not take part in it. That gives me the option of roleplaying with other people should I decide to continue playing.
Thank you. -
So, basically, a totally different game had PvP in it?
Would this be the same one with no AT system which was scrapped because everyone made tank/mages?
Be an interesting video to see though. -

PVP was here in CoH back in the Alpha stages, there is a video on youtube somewhere
[/ QUOTE ]
Could you back that up with a link, please? I can't find anything.
I'm not going to reply to the OP. It's such an obvious straw man rant that there's no valid reply. -
Probably only a year, maybe less. Game has only been out for 2 years and I don't think Aisla started Shadow's Grace within the first 6 months of that time.
Could be wrong, but I don't think so. -

Tower of Power used to wear "Secret Admirer", but changed it to "Risk Taker" when he started dating Sara Aegis.
[/ QUOTE ]
Dark horse that one. Wasn't he after Shadow's Grace at one point? And now he's dating her 'sister'... tut, tut. -
Lilith proudly wears Heart of Darkness, which, I think fits her perfectly.
-
Yeah, Crow is currently using 'Regenerator', I think Poly (the mad scientist) or Seven (the android) is using 'Upgraded'.
I live for the day I can get 'Undying' or even 'Immortal' on Jason Caine... who is supposed to be undying and immortal. -
Does anyone actually roleplay anything about the badges?
I mean things like the Freedom Phalanx Reserve Accolade. The Vanguard Accolade. These could, or should, have associated IC consequences (and wouldn't it be nice if they did?), but does anyone play with them?
We've used the Omega Level Clearance Souvenir before at the old GG, and I've just given War Crow a special uniform for wearing on Freedom Phalanx business since he has the Accolade. Anyone else done anything? -
Hmm... here's an interesting one. So, your hero gets his action figure (or figures, one with the kung-fu punch, another with realistic hair, and then there's the wedding set...), but what is a hero without villains to fight.
So, now the company has to go after getting the IPR for the villain identities. Will Dr Madasabagofspanners (and I'm copyrighting that) agree to having his name splashed over the TV networks as he appears in adverts where Captain Totally Brave beats him up repeatedly at the hands of children? Or is he going to say "hang my reputation, give me the cash!" -

When War Witch says she has a secret admirer..*points to the badge info that says something along the lines of her secret admirer*
[/ QUOTE ]
Yes, but the badge is a reference to the comic books, where she does, indeed, have a secret admirer. The in-game character, or for that matter the person telling her she has a secret admirer, shouldn't know about the comic books.
Now, technically, War Witch didn't actually become an in-game character until her ghost appeared over in Croatoa.
I can work around her dialogue in my head quite happily since this is supposed to be an alternative timeline version of WW and maybe the comics came out in 'our' Paragon City, but not hers.
[ QUOTE ]
But to get down to it,could you REALLY see every single hero getting into the magazines and action figures?
[/ QUOTE ]
I'd expect most heroes over, say, level 35 getting into the newspapers regularly. The real high-level heroes might manage merchandising deals if they would accept them, and not all of them will. If a lower level hero were to actively push it, they could probably attract deals earlier. See the Miss Teen stories in the IC Story thread. -
Too self-referential. She also makes comments like "I have a secret admirer?". Pocket D is kind of pseudo OOC, the logic of an environment where you can't simply punch someone is dubious (i.e. almost all zones), take that to a zone where heroes and villains are in close proximity and it's stretching it a whole huge amount.
Actually, no, now I think about it, the Halloween thing annoyed the hell out of me because the action figures were 'raiding for Hami-O's' a concept which has no meaning to children in Paragon City.
So, no, they're just jokes and if I don't treat them as 'just jokes' I get this urge to rant that rises uncontrollably in my gut like an enormous surge of bile and...
*breath*
So, yeah... jokes. -
The GG Roleplay group always assumed there were action figures and comic books. Grav Mistress had her own comic book series. So did War Crow (though it was fairly short run since Crow himself didn't think much of the story lines and he thought they were a bit too cheesecake when it came to pictures of Stargazer). Jessica Kade was noted for her various action figures (which she played with), purchased at the Wizard's Well. There is the Wizard's Well, which sells RP stuff and comics, so comics obviously exist. (As GI Joe and other such things indicate, just because superheroes do exist, doesn't mean there won't be comics about them.)
[ QUOTE ]
Whether that's an in-game reference or a joke on the part of the devs (or maybe both) can be left to speculation.

One of the less intrusive 4th Wall Breakers we've seen appear over the past year. This one can, at least, be taken IC. -
I have to think myself into being Lilith. She's evil. She's so evil, she'll do nice things for people if she can see that, in a hundred years, it'll turn out as evil.
Enherezza isn't evil at all. She's just odd. -
I'm just imagining a scene:
"Hi, I'm Wendy, they call me SuperWendy. I like kittens and saving people from bank robberies. How about you?"
"MORGO SMASH!!!!" -
Um... no, that was Enny telling Cassidy all about the things she hunts for Arachnos Man and Red Hair Man. It resulted in the story fragment about Enny collecting soap for the Lost.
Of course, Enny tells you about gutting people with such style that you hardly notice. -
Actually, I've found so far that heroes in Pocket D have a very calm reaction to villains discussing their misdeads. It's kind of like "well, that's happening in the Rogue Isles, so it's not something to get worked up about."
