I picked up on this too. Yes, there's remote classes, but there's also the university set-up where you can go and be educated about how wonderfrul Emperor Cole is.

Religion... lot of people actually seem to swear by Cole.

The assumption that Praetoria fits into the schema of typical Dystopian or real-world dictatorships is faulty. There's a lot of evidence that it doesn't.

If anything, it's a mixture of a vast number of fictional societies. No one's yet mentioned Brave New World (I think); the Praetorian populace are drugged to keep them happy after all.
  2. Probably the best canned history of Praetoria is Tyrant's Bio. A fair number of the bios on the GR site are written IC-ish and so tend to be a bit biased, but this one seems to be fairly OOC, just giving history.

If you dig through the other bits of the site you'll get a fair view of Praetorian recent history.

There's your problem. You've made two specific choices about your character and assumed that they are compatible.

Unfortunately, Loyalists aren't heroes, so picking the Loyalist option will result in you erforming an action which is "not heroic." I'm not actually sure any of the factions in Praetoria are 'heroic' in the Paragon City sense of the word.

Anyway, the way to deal with it is probably to aim to be heroic while staying Loyalist. You'll fail, but then you can finally move over to Paragon City content in the knowledge that this is a world without all that grey, messy, morally ambiguous, realistic garbabge you've had to deal with in Praetoria.
  4. Evening news, Paragon TV channels, 18:00

‘Reports of someone jumping to their death from the Bell-wave Bridge this morning, which brought rush hour traffic to a standstill, have been declared a hoax or a sick joke this evening as police divers failed to find any evidence of the apparent suicide.

‘Several drivers crossing the bridge reported seeing the body of a woman falling past the bridge at around eighty-thirty. Despite the rapid response of police patrol units to the scene, and the early deployment of divers beneath the bridge, no body has been found. Police added that no note or other evidence was found on the bridge, despite a thorough search and have closed the case.’
  5. Early morning traffic reports, Paragon TV channels, August 23rd, 2010, 08:50

‘If you’re planning a trip through Independence Port this morning, better go the long way. The Bell-wave Bridge has been closed to traffic for the last ten minutes, and looks as if it will stay that way while police investigate a disturbance near the south pier.’

Mid-morning news, Paragon TV channels, 10:00

‘Police say that the blockage of the Bell-wave Bridge for over an hour this morning was the result of reports that someone had jumped from the southern pier. Motorists reported seeing a woman falling past the roadway at around eight-thirty, and the PPD responded quickly to close off the bridge and begin searches. At this time no body has been found and no one has identified the apparent suicide.’

    Gunwitch Stories

Okay then, the second part of Gunwitch's 'Origin Story.'

    Beware of adult themes.

    Fear and Death

Or you can read it on Unionverse

    Magic Control

The problem with it is that it's far too specific.

You're a magician: you achieve this through a clever mutation which allows you to do some clever tricks, but you're a magician. It's very hard to get very many character concepts out of that and it would need a lot of work for something which would be FTM for 5 seconds.

    You're wrong, I'm afraid.

For starters, I've had tips from Peregrine give me missions in Brickstown. There's no guarantee that a mission will be in the zone you're in, though they seem to be biased toward it.

Second, when you change sides you lose any tips you've gained. You can't take 'Hero' tips to the Isles.

    So Praetorians!

Gunwitch, Annette Louise Barrington, is the Praetorian version of Nitoichi, but she won't be around Praetoria for long.

    To come, maybe:

Cranfield, KM/Inv brute. Bit of a thug and in it for the glory, but fiercely loyal to his friends.

Baltry tosses electricity about. he's a sort of more responsible version of Cranfield.

Kenya is a transgenics experiment; cat-like, stealthy, nasty claws, and in the Resistance.

Love and Loss is now up for reading on the Unionverse wiki.

    And the PDF version.

Adult themes in places, people, be wary.
  11. My typical tactic for my DP/Traps Cor is to drop an acid mortar, with the beacon a little behind, then go out and pull mobs in. I stand in the beacon area and the mobs get acid bombs chucked at them before they even get to me.

A floating beacon would be nice, and I'd love a +Rec element, but I don't think it's needed.
  12. I17 had more 'content' for villains than heroes.

Dual Pistols is available on both sides, but Demon Summoning is only available to MMs.

The OP needs to return to hiding under his bridge.

You make it sound like a good thing. They handle any form of conflicted activity badly. Generally, the hybrid systems work out better: Fudge, say. Or you use a standard, dice-based system and have a good GM.

Where does your character get his or her laundry done?
That depends. At her flat in Galaxy she washes her own. At the Unity Vigil HQ, BODICIA does it (with complaints). Her house in France has a maid.

In a philosophical discussion of death, how would your character describe the perfect death?
    No such thing.

What is your character's favorite food or drink? What food or drink do they absolutely hate?
Doesn't really have a favourite, but he hates fast food.

    Quote:
Describe your character's personal bedroom. Is it in your supergroup's base or somewhere else?
The one in France doesn't get used enough. In the UV base and Galaxy the most descriptive term would be 'cluttered order.'

    Quote:
How would your character's father describe him or her?
He's dead, but when he was alive he would not have bothered describing her. He didn't care enough.

    Quote:
]Would the description be any different coming from his or her mother?
    Yes, her mother isn't dead.

If you (the player) were to meet the character, what would you most DISLIKE about the character, from a personality standpoint. (Do NOT think of what you don't like about limitations on pwoersets...think personality)
She's over-confident, a bit more extreme in her actions than I am.

Frankly, I'd be too busy staring at her chest to dislike anything.

  15. (( The following appears in the evening editions of the several Paragon City newspapers with additional details in the morning editions tomorrow. ))

    (( Early editions. ))
    Local Businessman Killed in Assassination
Dateline: Steel Canyon, August 3rd 2010
Well known businessman Earnest Vano was killed this afternoon when an assassin's bullet penetrated the side of his limousine. Police have sealed off the area, including a hotel about two-thirds of a mile from the site where Mr Vano was killed.

Earnest Vano came from humble roots, but rapidly built up a reputation as a well-liked business tycoon with his finger in a number of lucrative pies. While there were rumours of an FBI investigation into his dealings five years ago, nothing was ever uncovered and Vano's large charity dealings have made him popular with the local community.

(( Morning editions, 4th August, added notes. ))

A police spokesman had this to say: "There are currently no suspects in this case, however we believe that this was a professional hit. Mr Vano was killed by a high calibre bullet from over a thousand yards away. Anyone having any information on this case should contact the Steel Canyone precinct.'

Inside sources have stated that the bullet penetrated armoured glass to punch through Mr Vano's chest. He died almost instantly. At this time, no indications have come from the family regarding a change in management of his company, which is family owned.
  16. Rolling Rock magazine, August 2010 edition, Band News section

The Burning Sons, up and coming Brummy metal band have announced their plans to break into the American market with a new video to be released in late September. This will be the fourth single off their debut album 'Into the Divide,' and for this US intro they are going with 'Shades of Grey,' a rock ballad fairly heavily influenced by some of Linkin' Park's work, especially 'Crawling.'

Band leader Eddy Blake announced that the band would start filming the video on location in Poland on August the 16th, along with American superheroine Annette 'Nitoichi' Barrington who recently appeared on the cover of the 'NUTTY' men's magazine. Blake said, "We're really keen to work with Annette because we really think she can bring a bit of a spark to the two rolls she'll be playing; two sides of the same coin characterwise, so to speak. Besides, man, have you seen her? She's gorgeous!"

  19. Fire Destroys Warehouse
    Paragon Post, august 30th, 2010

A fire claimed the main warehouse of Garibaldi Imports in Independence Port last night. Fire fighters tried for four hours to put out the blaze, but the building is thought to be a complete loss.

Investigators' preliminary findings suggest that the fire was the result of arson. Winesses have reported hearing three small explosions before the fire was noticed at 3am.

Security guards evacuated the building once the fire took hold, but one fire fighter was wounded when a section of roof collapsed.
  20. Annette: Will be dressed in a fairly figure-hugging, low-backed, floor-length white gown with a split up the side all the way up to the hip, and six-inch heeled platform shoes with transparent soles. (The latter being so that she gets anywhere close to Jacob's height.) She will get Jacob to dance, even if it involves dragging him. I see her as a drummer at the Rock Band stand, she definately will not be singing (she has a singing voice like stripped gears).

Leannan: It's her first prom, so she'll over do it a bit. Dressed in a floor-length, sky blue gown, fitted at he top with a wide skirt. It somehow manages to look semi-transparent to some people, and quite solid to everyone else, and it sparkles whenever the light hits it. She'll dance with anyone who asks, and sing at Rock Band, her voice apparently adapting to any kind of song that comes along. Yes, she's tossing the Glamour around like confetti.

Tabby: Has been provided with her very own climbing frame with perches and 'mice in parcels,' so she'll be in seventh heaven.

Depends upon the proactive, but we're looking at a Minority Report type thing if you are willing to actively 'prosecute' based on the idea that someone may commit a crime.

The entire reason why I don't believe in terminal punishment mechanisms is that 'justice' is fallible and we can't bring people back from the dead. Of course, that's retroactive, but if you make a mistake...

In Praetoria, we have thought crime, which has the same potential for messing up. People think a lot of nasty things they have no intention of acting on.

I'm moderately sure that Superman exists to sell comic books. He's too inhuman to be a useful metaphor. There is more or less nothing he can't overcome with simple brute force. To use your own term, Achilles was a superhuman, but Superman isn't just a superhuman, he's a god.

    Quote:
I'm not sure what it is about the abilities and powers that makes these stories more compelling than simple drama. But given our historical proclivity for deifying war heroes and wise men--that is, making reality more memorable by adding superhuman aspects--I'd have to theorize that the abilities do add something.
Deep philosophical thought ahead. Please note, your correspondent got very little sleep last night and has a headache, deep philosphical thought may actually be total rubbish.

I'd theorise that what the powers do is act as a buffer for our own inadequacies. A 'hero,' whether superpowered or just extra-brave or whatever, is something a bit extra. Because of that, we can all turn around and justify our own lack of action; we aren't lacking, they have that bit extra. To put it another way, we aren't strange, they are.

This likely explains the tendency to be happy when a hero falls: "they had that bit extra, bit they aren't really any better than we are. In fact, we're better than hey are, because they were better and still messed up!" Suddenly, the common man can feel great about himself while portraying one of his worst character traits. Aren't we all wonderful?

    Quote:
Putting a hero on a higher pedestal just so we can watch them get pushed from it seems rude to me.
I agree, but it's also something that popular culture does. I can't really believe the CoH earth is any different (though Praetoria appears to be).

We build our heroes up, whether they be sports stars, singers, film stars, and then we just love reading about it as their world goes to Hell. (That's a generic 'we.' I, personally, hate it and it sounds like you do too.)

    --
Having got a bit tired of mega-heroes, mine tend to be fairly human (even the inhuman ones) and their problems tend to be personal, rather than world shattering. My main is currently getting over a failure which resulted in the death of a girl she was looking after. There was no way she could have saved her, but she feels guilty about it. She's not a famous hero, so the world doesn't know about her guilt. It's just her, sorting out her own problem.
  24. Explosion Rocks galaxy City
Minor headline: Galaxy City Herald, 26 July 2010
An explosion on the roof of a building on the north side of Gemini park was heard by citizens across Galaxy. The explosion, which happened around 2am last night, appears to have been the result of vigilante action against a group of terrorists who had established a lookout post on the building.

Investigating officers stated that, "Three bodies were recovered, believed to belong to the mercenary organisation known as the Knives of Artemis. We do not know, at this time, why the base had been established. We are investigating the bombing with intention to arrest the murderer."
