Quote:I figured as much, which is why I mentioned that I had made a KM/WP scrapper and had also created a SD/KM Tank. It's not that the set doesn't work, it's more the pairing of WP and KM on a tank that didn't work for me. I still want to see if it works better as a KM/WP which is why I'm giving that a shot. For what it's worth, I'm just discussing KM (though I think it probably would sync up decently with most sets pretty well). I'm also trying to say if you know the numbers add up... you should try to let that affect your perception, right?
Hate to see you not liking a set that you think doesn't do good damage when the numbers say otherwise.
But hey, I can understand not liking a set on a feeling. I like Warmace more than Battle Axe even though they're not very different, for instance. And though I do like Dual Blades, I enjoy Fire Melee, War Mace, and SS more, even though it balances out by the numbers.
I also agree with the Gauntlet stuff... think the proc just works on what the attack is hitting, not Gauntlet itself. From what I remember, anyway.
Unfortunately I'm not the only one who has a perception, right or wrong, that KM is a little on the lighter side when it comes to damage. Even my wife, who isn't into game number crunching by any means, feels that way about her KM scrapper. I'm happy to try it out with other combinations to find something that works for me. We'll see how it goes with those two toons. -
Uhm... My understanding of gauntlet is that procs will NOT fire off the gauntlet effect. You use a single target attack and the proc will only check against the single target. I'll look around and see if I can find a definitive answer on this just to make sure.

This is a repeat of something I said in another thread.
Let's say you've got 44% s/l defense, 35% f/c defense and 36% ranged defense. You get attacked by a fire blast (typed fire, ranged). The ranged defense would be applied since it's the higher number, with the fire defensive number being ignored.
So you can see how typed defense vs. positional defense is looked at. So yes, if you're capped to all positions you don't need to worry about getting more typed defense. But going back to what Aett Thorn mentioned, you want to focus on the set's strength and build on top of that.
You get attacked by a fireball (typed Smashing/Fire, ranged). The s/l defense would apply as it's the higher number with the fire and ranged defensive numbers being ignored.
-
Hey Pilgrim, if I could quantify it, I would. I have numerous tanks floating around with most of the secondaries, the exception being Dual Blades and Energy Melee. (Can't get behind the mechanics of DB.) So I do have a range of experiences to draw from, not the widest, but a range still. For me the pairing of Willpower and Kinetics just didn't work.
Personally I wouldn't get into a debate with the number crunchers knowing their history and accuracy concerning how much damage a set may, or may not be doing. I'd lose that one and I have no doubt that they are correct in their analysis. It just doesn't change my perception.
I'm still going to give Kinetic Melee a try on a tank. I've already created a Praetorian SD/KM. I suspect the pairing of AAO -dmg and KM's -dmg will be helpful. We shall see.
At some point I may go back and work with the WP/KM tank on test and see if I can make it work better for me, but for now I have other new toys to play with. -
I've been planning on making a WP/Kin tank on live since the news of the Kin Melee set was announced. So when I got the opportunity to try it out on C/Beta I jumped at the chance.
With the tank lvl bumped to 41 I tried it out and went...... damn... this really doesn't work for a tank, at least not for a WP one. I wanted to like it, really I did. But it just didn't grab me in any significant way that made me want to make a WP/Kin tank on live.
I like the animations. The audio, for me, leaves something to be desired. The damage doesn't feel like it's all that great compared to other sets available to tanks. I know the number crunchers will say differently, but that's how it feels. As someone who has a lot of fun playing an nrg/nrg blaster, the kb on Repulsing Torrent is just too inconcistent to provide the mitigation I'd want it for.
In the end I changed the plan from a WP/Kin tank to a Kin/WP scrapper and I'm happier with that choice so far. I think Heraclea's explanation covers it pretty well for why it doesn't work with a WP tank. Yes you can throw all the numbers out you want, but for me it just didn't work either. I may try it on a different Primary at some point and see if I change my mind or not. As always YMMV. -
An IO'd Invulnerability tank can be built close to Stone tank's survivability without the Stone's drawbacks. Who wouldn't want that?
-
Can you re-export your third build with both the data chunk and data link? It makes it easer to see what your totals are etc.
-
I think you've got it, but I'll add even more to what you've stated.
Let's say you've got 44% s/l defense, 35% f/c defense and 36% ranged defense. You get attacked by a fire blast (typed fire, ranged). The ranged defense would be applied since it's the higher number, with the fire defensive number being ignored.
Now this is how the damage types are generally believed to be broken down in the game:
You get attacked by a fireball (typed Smashing/Fire, ranged). The s/l defense would apply as it's the higher number with the fire and ranged defensive numbers being ignored.
Code:Since s/l make up such a high proportion most people focus on s/l first, followed by e/n, then f/c and if possible Psi. Unfortunately some higher end content tends to skew more towards the Psi so that can sometimes be an achilles heal. Fortunately in Stone Armor's case that can be helped with dropping into Minerals, or getting good regen in Rooted, and Earth's Embrace for +hp/ heal.69.68% Smashing/Lethal 16.45% Energy/Negative 7.23% Fire/Cold 4.60% Toxic 2.04% Psionic
-
If you're already starting with a bunch of typed defense it's easier to build on that instead of starting to build from the lower positional defensive numbers to the soft cap. On top of that you can typically get typed defensive set bonuses with less slots then most positional defense set bonuses. That gives you more flexibility in your build.
-
Most of my tanks have ended up getting Tough. I didn't bother on my Stone tank.
I debated about adding Weave on my Fire/Fire tank so I took it over to test and tried doing missions with and without Weave in the build. Even without additional set bonuses, Weave slowed down the damage enough to make me feel it was worth while on the tank. -
I typically put in one SO or IO's worth of End Redux in my shields unless I'm going for set bonuses.
If it's resistance/defense IO set I'll typically grab the following IO's, for example:
Resistance
Resistance/End Redux
Resistance/Recharge
Resistance/End Redux/Recharge
Going with a level 35 set would net you around 41.29% end redux compared to 36.7% for a level 35 end redux IO, or 42.4% for a level 50 end redux IO. All of the above would drop a toggle using .21 end/sec down to .15 end/sec.
Typically your biggest end user will be your attacks. Make sure you've got them adequately slotted for end redux. -
Reactive Armor's last two bonuses:
5th slot: 1.25% AoE Defense, 0.63 Fire/Cold Defense
6th slot: 1.25% Toxic Resistance
If the 5th slot was 1.25% Fire/Cold and 0.63% AoE I could see it being valuable for a Typed defense bonus, but for now I typically find the 5th and 6th slotting of Reactive Armors not worth using.
The level 20 set Dechs mentioned is Rectifying Recticle: 2nd slot: 1.88% S/L defense, .94% Melee. -
I'll go back to what was mentioned several times in the Bruising threads: I think adding bruising to the Tier 2 power, and allowing a minor stack from other tanks would go a long way towards making 2+ tanks on a team more viable, especially against harder targets.
-
Quote:+movement bonuses are also helpful. For a Stone tank I think the general advice is:
1) +Runspeed set bonuses and Teleport for moving around while in Granite
2) +Recharge bonuses and Hasten to counter the -Rech in Granite
3) Rock Armour and Minerals to use against enemies with heavier Psi damage
4) Possibly some Defense bonuses
Disclaimer: I've never played a Stone tank past level 7. -
Stuff in this list here: All Things Art: Animation Edition that relate to powers.
-
Oh, Force Fields: Agree on the less "soap bubble" animation. Possibly one that would surround both you and the target in a fashion similar to what Ice Armor does, but with more rounded/smooth edges.
-
One of the animation/fx that I really like is the trail of color you get when running with the Blackwand.
Should sets like Dark/Electric/Fire etc. get a wand variation on the animations something akin to the Blackwand would be a nice touch. -
Ionization
Commander Ion
Capt. Ion
Ionic Darkety Darkness.
Red Ion or Ion Rouge, or Rot Ion, or Ion Rojo (Pseudo French, German or Spanish variations)
Le Ion Noir aka The Black Ion (Pseudo French variation)
Just some ideas.... -
First of all, thanks for the reply Texas. I put the new network back together to day to take a look at the suggestions you made.... and the &^%^$!! thing worked just fine! I didn't make any changes to the router, the cable modem or the rest of the network/computer settings.... yet it wouldn't connect properly yesterday no matter what I tried.
Figures.
As for the same IP addresses, none of the items in the network had conflicting IPs yesterday and they were getting the correct submasking as well. I always leave the settings in the dynamic IP mode. As far as I could tell, they were all getting the proper DNS information as well, but it's possible I missed something. -
As most folks will tell you, take a look at Call Me Awesome's Invulnerability guides to start with.
The First 20 Levels
Invulnerable Tanks and the Defense Soft Cap
Once you've taken a look there put together a build using the Mid's Hero Planner and post it here showing either what your current build is, or what you would like to build towards. That will give us a starting point to give more advice. -
This was the build I was working towards until the newest changes to FA happened. I'll need to find a way to work Burn back into the build. I'll probably swap out Breath of Fire for Burn and fill it with four Erads. If nothing else it might give you some ideas.

I recently tried to change over my home network from a Linksys WRT54G v5 wireless router to a Belkin N+ (Model F5D8235-4 v2) router. The Belkin router has been upgraded to the current firmware. (I prefer Linksys, but the Belkin has a usb connection for hard drive storage that I thought would be nice)
The system consists of varying computers and OS's:
The Wired portion includes a Win XP computer, Win Vista Home Premium computer, and an HP Photosmart Premium printer.
The Wireless portion is a Macbook Pro laptop and an Apple iPhone 3G.
Now at this point you're more then likely going to think I'm having wireless issues, but that would be incorrect. For whatever reason, the Win Vista system cannot connect to the internet. The local networking works just fine. The systems can communicate with each other, they can all see the printer. The Vista system can access the router's set up page. Everything else on the network that should be able to get to the internet, can. According to the Vista system it's "seeing" the internet, but I can't access it.
I've made sure that I've got the latest drivers for the computer's network card. I've tried releasing and renewing the DHCP. There are no network IP conflicts. I've unplugged the cable modem and router several times waiting at least 30 seconds before firing up the modem, then the router... etc, etc, etc. The settings on the router are exactly the same for both the Win XP and Vista systems. I've traded out network cables to eliminate that as a possibility. I've tried different ports on the new router. It's not like I haven't set up multiple, albeit simple, networks before and made them work.
I will admit I haven't attempted to ping any websites and will try that later when I get around to feeling like beating my head against this wall again. I just remembered I hadn't tried that.
Any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks. -
I have to figure out how to squeeze Burn back into my Fire/Fire. I kept it on my Fire/SS and used the Fear for mitigation. I do like the changes so far.
-
When Rage is up on my Fire/SS tank, the damage done by Burn is higher then without Rage.
With Rage the damage done by FE is higher on Burn's up front damage then without Rage.
FE doesn't add to Burn's DoT.
