  2. Rangle M. Down

    Phantom Enigma

Progress, however great or small, is great to hear. It's nice to hear he's well enough to leave the hospital.
  3. Sorry I've missed the last couple of TTs. Work's been keeping me busy. Looks like I should make the next.
  4. Finduilas' build is very well done, as is pretty much all her builds. I'm too tired at the moment to pull together one from scratch myself, and I doubt it would be much different than hers. (I'll admit my SD/SS tank takes a much different approach, but I like his build for the left field approach I took. )

Should you choose to do so you could garnish a tiny bit more Resistance if you swapped out the LotG Def. IO in CJ for the Shield Wall +Res IO.

When I'm more awake, and actually have time to look at things again I'll try and put a few more of my two cents worth out. I may even throw my unconventional SD/SS build to the wolves... I mean forumites.

  7. As an alt-o-holic I've got lots of toon names I like:

Rangle M. Down (IE. Wrangle them Down), is currently a Grav/Storm controller. The original was deleted a long time ago on a server far, far away....

Taek M. Down (IE. Take them Down) is an ill/ff controller.

Dr. Phylum Down (IE. File them Down) is a Plant/Thermal controller. Phylum definition.

Ko Oni, and Ko Oni II (Ko Oni roughly translates into Little Devil/Demon or Imp), are both Fire tanks. Oni is a Fire/SS while Oni II is a Fire/Fire.

Interruption is a Dark/Dark tank. (got the idea for the name from NPC dialog in the game) She's always interrupting the bad guys plans.

Severance Package is a SD/Axe tank.

Virophage is a Spines/Dark scrapper. A Virophage in real life is a class of viruses that infect other viruses.

Comrade Polar Bear is an Inv/Dark/Ice tank. The toon started out as a way of poking fun at a different player in the game, but has grown beyond that.

    One last one before I take up way more space then I already have;

Alamogordo Glass is an Earth/Radiation controller. The name Alamogordo Glass (more commonly known as Trinitite) comes from the glassy residue that was left on the desert floor after the explosion of the plutonium based Trinity bomb test in July of 1946 by Alamogordo, New Mexico. I thought it fit an Earth/Rad well.

    I'll stop here for now...

How you read the "if" in that sentence could change its meaning, I guess. Consider this clarification). Ideas for expansion of the game are worth looking at more deeply, rather than dismissing with an /unsigned (not to say some ideas need a lot of discussion, some are more simple). I do not discuss it just to argue, but because I find it an interesting topic. The ability to perfectly tailor a character to my imagination would be fabulous. The variety that it could produce in game would be great. The potential pitfalls are real, which mean discussion and research are vital during any planning stage. Throwing your hands up in the air without seriously thinking about how to overcome the problems is repulsive.

One can argue both the pros and cons of an idea. I do not have to just argue the benefits of the freeform system and feel that it must be placed into the game and those who disagree are just reactionary. Nor do I just need to discuss just the negatives and say the idea could never be workable and insult those who desire change. Just because I like the current system, doesn't mean I would not like a new system. Just because a new system has real benefits, doesn't mean the drawbacks are worth those benefits.

Finally, whose time am I wasting? We are on a discussion forum about a game. Specifically we are in the Suggestion forum in a topic whose sole purpose is to discuss the idea of potential freeform character creation. So I discuss the concept of freeform character creation and advancement systems. But I am somehow wrong because I do not clearly park myself in one camp or the other and instead discuss the idea neutrally?

Indeed. And it is possible that continuing down the line of creating new powersets is the correct choice. But in the past new powersets have been slow in coming, because they take a lot of developer time (yes, I realize they were holding a lot back for this fall, but that also indicates that most forum-goers do not really have any idea what the studio is actually capable of producing, looking at what we are likely going to be getting in a few months on top of what we got the last year, I think some people underestimate their potential just a bit). It is possible that in the long run a freeform system of some kind could save developer time, freeing them to create more powers than they currently are able to. A freeform system would also allow them to create powers without feeling pressure to make sure they have enough to fill an entire powerset. the fact that they only have 3 Whip powers would not prevent dominators or blasters (if ATs were maintained) from getting access to those attacks.

Very true. This one of the reasons I would strongly lean towards freeform as an additional method of creation/advancement instead of a replacement. It is one of the reasons I keep saying I would have the goal that a freeform character and a current character would be able to exist side-by-side in the game without either feeling more or less than the other. They did not remove SOs, when IOs were added to the game, as an example.
Too long; done reading your responses.

Let's just say that we agree to disagree. Nothing you've said has changed my opinion, and I'm sure nothing I've said has changed yours. At this point I doubt anything else you repeat or espouse will change my opinion, and vice-verse as we both are circling around the same points, and have been for a few posts. Should someone bring a compelling enough argument, which I don't feel you have to date, I'd be willing to listen again.

As I said before; feasible or not, I don't think it fits the game at this point. I believe the idea has no added value, and has a greater chance of causing more harm then good.

    Yeah.

    I'll pass.
  11. I will highly recommend finding a way to purchase the Theft of Essence: Chance for +endurance IO and dropping into Dark Regeneration. It's cheaper to get the recipe and craft it, usually. The nice thing about the IO is you have a chance of getting +10 endurance for every target you heal off of. In a large enough crowd it's not unusual to get more endurance back then you've used for the heal. I get it asap on all my dark armor toons.

Chances are it will be easier just to start them in the starting zone under the presumption that people playing them should know enough without the tutorial.
    Doh. I guess it's been a while since I've made a VEAT.

    Yeah, you're probably correct.
  13. Considering Galaxy city is going to be the new Hero/Villain tutorial I doubt they would exclude VEATs and HEATs from it. They may limit the ability to allow VEATs to go Hero, and HEATs to go Villain right off the bat, but leave them out of the new tutorial? Very doubtfully.

Why discuss something that's not worth doing? Personally that sounds like just a lot of hot air, and a waste of everyone's time.

I think Aura's idea of an AT that has some free form to it is viable, beyond the VEATs. They are a slightly free-form AT. I don't know if it would be worth it, but that is viable under the current game structure, and probably worth discussing.

For every example that's been given for what some folks would "like to be able to do", I would think that creating new epic sets could possibly cover their needs or even new combo power sets.

Think about it. Pistol Mastery, Axe Mastery, a Mace mastery that doesn't include the Villain side Maces, etc.

Maybe new power Sets: another dual wield set, like dual blades, but instead of two blades we get a mace/blade set! That would cover even more "wants". Instead of mace/blade, a dual wield set of Blade/Pistol. Very Pirate. Again, this cover's some player's wants and could be balanced against itself.

Those ideas I can see arguing for, within the confines of what CoH is. Customization of power sets, to create different looks, works within what CoH is. Free form power selection isn't what CoH is.

IF you wanted to go that direction, free-form, I believe you'd have more dissension then even the i13 PvP changes created. It may, in some peoples minds, create added value, but as you pointed out this would create a higher level of complexity. A level of complexity that I think the average player would balk at.

The entire logistics of it frightens me much more than the very real and terrifying balance concerns. The level of complication it adds to the UI is nearly incomprehensible, not to mention that the level of detail would be overwhelming and overwhelming is often not fun, especially when it is essentially just bookkeeping that is overwhelming (ever play a PnP game with people who were obsessively organized and thorough with their character records, this idea would be very appealing to them (maybe us, although I always thought my levels were high, but not excessive )). The simplicity of the AT system was always appealing to me. The fact that I can play a character with just SOs and/or cheap easy frankenslotting is very appealing (but I do also delve deeper into the inventions on many characters, so I obviously like complex sometimes too). The nightmare PR of people who can't get exactly what they want (because they want something way out of balance) after paying X bucks is mind-boggling. The level of haves vs. have nots it would introduce is at least of some concern. The system to catalog and store any approved concept and allow them to be browsed conveniently by potential buyers would be difficult to create (think how delightful it is to go through some of the long lists of costume options we have).
So, you were spending time playing "devil's advocate". Gotcha.

    Have a nice day.
  16. I would also be a fan of a Dark Armor/Fire tank. You won't be able to do as much dmg as the Brute, but you'll have higher resistance numbers, higher hit points, and Fire for a tank gets one more AoE attack. If you choose to go down the IOing direction it would be easier (less expensive) to get the tank to the defensive soft cap then the Brute.

    Bad news

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. http://www.fhcrc.org/
  19. This would probably be a pretty nice 3 person team: Bane Spider, Crab Spider, and a Fortunata.
  20. I was also going to suggest three Shield Defense toons.

I think having an elec, fire, and dark aura tank/brute/scrapper combination would also be entertaining. You could make them all tanks, brutes or scrappers, or just mix and match. Lots of dmg auras taking down minions.

You could go themed; One such example would be electric. Electric armor tank/brute/scrapper paired with an electric control dom/controller and the third being an electric blast defender/corruptor/blaster. Talk about your recovery debuffing.

All Fire/Rad teams are entertaining as are all corrupter teams.
  21. Wait! I thought VEATs were TankMages!?!?!?!

I must be doing it wrong.

    Mah bad.
  22. A lvl 25 Impervium set bonus will be the same as a lvl 50 Impervium set bonus. The enhancement values on the lvl 50 will be higher then the lvl 25. (Ie higher resistance, end reduction, and recharge percentages)

With the level 50 Imperviums, once you exemp below lvl 47 you will lose the set bonuses. The enhancement values will scale down as you exemp down from lvl 50.

With the level 25 Imperviums, once you exemp down below lvl 22 you will lose the set bonuses. The enhancement values will scale down once you get below lvl 25.

I think there needs to be a small clarification here: You can't slot more then one Acc/Dam from A single set.

For example: You could 3 slot a Melee power with an ACC/Dam IO from the following sets; Crushing Impact set, the Touch of Death Set and the Mako's bite set (generally referred to as Frankenslotting). That is allowed by the game.

You can't slot two Crushing Impact: Acc/Dam IOs into one power.

    I hope that is clearer.
