To be honest, I think the intent here was to say "Seperate but connected".

They are connected by the PvP zones, RWZ, and Pocket D. But, game play wise, they are otherwise separate.

This includes the things you appear to find objectionable. I personally fail to see where any intelligent villain wouldn't take advantage of the vanguard offer to steal advance tech and learn various heroes weaknesses.

FFXI seemed to look at everything every MMO previously did wrong, and either a) forgot about it, or b) "improved" that to make it worse.

From what I recall - randomized server placement (not good for a group of friends just starting wanting to play together) if you don't have a world pass - and a long cut scene before you know which one your character has been placed on? And the pass cost ingame money, and let you start a NEW character on the server. From what I heard, by the time you could afford to buy one for a friend, you would be quite a bit ahead of start.

Cheapest monthly price, last I looked, of it's "generation" - but each character slot beyond the first (and no, not one per server) costs extra money?

A character race that is incapable of running straight?

Makes SWG sound downright friendly to me.

This is quite common actually. You know that free Windows Media Player you get with windows? MS has to pay to license the MP3 technology. All movie studios have to pay to use the MPEG2 technology to release DVD's. And the list goes on and on and on. Incidentally, this is also why different companies want to have their technology as the standard. Since they'll be getting paid for it by everybody who uses it.
