  1. Congratulations, both to CR for 10k views and to Lady Arete!
  2. Oh my gosh, those are EPIC! I'm especially impressed with the job you did on the Hard Suits. I think I'm going to have to "borrow" those helmets. Any chance we can see more, Alt?
  3. Just something interesting I found on the matter of gambling in MMOs, since it's come up. In an article by Mark Methenitis, from the Texas Tech University School of Law (found at: http://webpages.acs.ttu.edu/mmetheni...#_Toc121217203)

    Quote:
    1. Un-integrated Gambling

Un-integrated gambling is the far more common method available at the present time, however it may not be in the future. Un-integrated gambling means that the developer has not specifically made gambling part of the game, but players have figured out a way to use what is available in the game to gamble regardless. While some games simply assume that they have skirted any connection to gambling by not explicitly providing for it, other games have gone as far as to actively ban and police un-integrated gambling.(53) However, even after these virtual casinos are shut down, newer, more inventive adaptations of gambling to the MMORPG inevitably follow, such as the recent BINGO outbreak in World of Warcraft.(54)

Un-integrated gaming is very limited. Players are constrained to cobble together what the game allows. Moreover, they are required to trust in other players to pay out the prizes or results of bets made. Much like real world illegal gambling, a player who does not receive payout has no recourse within the game as it is a prohibited activity. However, much like real world illegal gambling, it seems that un-integrated gambling will occur whether or not it is permitted by the game.
Link to the article about the bans for in-game gambling, courtesy of IGN: http://pc.ign.com/articles/588/588964p1.html

For what it's worth, I think the idea of betting on arena matches is awesome. I don't personally see anything wrong with it, but it's obvious that some publishes and companies are worried about the Internet Gambling Laws being brought into MMOs. Then again, I remember a case where Sony banned a player after they posted some Fan-Fic with a rather dark subject matter, even though it wasn't on an official website. So some companies are -especially- skittish about laws and potential backlash. *shrugs*

Thank you for the art, Heroid! You did a great job on it! =D
  5. RWZ Challenge is a fight against a group of level 54 Rikti that includes at least 3 (4?) bosses. It's a stress test for Scrapper builds, in essence.

Most powerset combos can solo an AV/Pylon if built and played properly. Some of the best primaries for it are Dark Melee and Fire Melee, while good secondaries are SR and Shields. The "hardest" to use primaries for the task would probably fall to Spines and Electric. I don't know that you could say there's a "least suited" secondary, since they all bring a lot to the table and can be made even better with IOs. You don't even need to be soft capped, though it definitely helps.

The main thing you want in an AV solo is high damage single target attacks. To make a seamless attack chain, thus boosting your damage per second, you generally need a fair bit of recharge. If you don't see the need for a lot of purples then you might consider a combo like Fire/SR, which has a solid attack chain that can be pulled off with just a little bit extra global recharge and will quickly reach the defense soft cap. Relatively cheap, and very effective.

The Spines/Elec might be a little tough, but you could even turn your BS/Regen into a very capable AV soloer. If you want something new, check out the powersets, find some primary/secondaries that interest you, and let us know! It'll be easier to give you specific advice if you narrow down your goals and likes.

    Have fun, and good luck!

    Add:
For some ideas on current performance you can check the "Rikti Pylon Results Thread" here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=130754
I think the current fastest Pylon solo time for a Scrapper belongs to a Fire/Shield, clocking in at just over 4 minutes. There have been several other very impressive times by other builds, too.

    Sent you a PM, Heroid.
  8. That's really interesting! Thank you for pointing that out, I had never thought of it. Also, it sounds like you're spot on about the Numina's/Miracle thing:

    Quote:
    Invention

    * Fixed a bug that would cause Numina's Convalescence: +Regen/+Recovery to have its effects boosted by being slotted in a power with enhancements that would increase regeneration or recovery rates.
No mention of the Miracle +Rec thus far. With fixes to the Numina having finally come it seems like fixes to the other IO oddities may be around the corner, but who knows. Nice benefit of a swapped slot, as it is.

And yeah, I'll get to play patty cake with Recluse. The really hairy part of the encounter has been the very beginning, while the +ToHit tower is still up. Our little crew is designed to drop it pretty fast, but until it goes down it's like fighting Rularru eyeballs... Bad mojo on a Defense-centric char. I can compensate by using insps, but having well slotted Tough+OwtS and the +3 Res PvP IO puts me almost to the Scrapper res cap on S/L for 2 minutes and at/near the HP cap. That's getting pretty close to my Stoney, if only for short periods of time.

I'm mainly looking for a build that can work in as much survivability as possible but still have passable offense, and if the purples can be used to get me where I want to be, I'm all for it! If you have ideas for a more traditional Farm build too I'd be happy to see it, otherwise there's always the 50 million other threads on it that I can (and was planning on) digging through for ideas, so you don't have to repeat yourself here. I love the alt builds feature.

You don't need aidself or OWS tbh mate.

I can take on most things in-game without the need for either. Things like pylon soloing etc and farming even 54 Warriors etc.
Nope, not harsh. I came looking for feedback! I'd be interested in seeing your suggestions for a build that does up the cost a bit too. Keeping in mind that I have an overall defensively-oriented goal, as opposed to creating a balls-to-the-wall farmer, I'm expecting and willing to pay for my edge.

Right now I'm running with the 2nd build in my original post, which doesn't have Aid Self or OwtS, and have been doing fine like you pointed out. Pylons and +4 Praetorian baddies haven't been a problem, but I don't feel as sturdy as I think I could be for level 51-52 AVs and the Patrons in the STF. My little crew likes to do horrible, nasty things to its Scrappers and, since the Dark/SR that had been tanking our STFs wanted to bring something else in the future, I get to take over. I could just bring my Stone tank, but would be boring.

I like the idea of keeping Grant Cover, though I do notice that Tough and Deflection in this example don't have much Resistance (or End for Tough) slotted... Though I do suppose the End wouldn't be a big problem considering my recovery.

Do the Enzymes in Weave and BA work the way Mid's is saying they do, in-game? Slotting the debuff HOs in this instance provides a bigger boost than the buff HOs? Also, does putting the Miracle +Rec in PP boost the overall Recovery in-game still? I was under the impression that had recently been fixed (along with health enhancements no longer affecting the %). If it's like that in game then I'm absolutely changing that over.

Thanks for taking the time to offer up the build, definitely gives me some food for thought.

Exchange the Hecatomb Dam/Rech for a Dam: Superior if you do this (since Scorch recharges fast enough that you don't need as much recharge enhancement in it).
Also a good suggestion. I did encounter a slight problem... If I swap the two then Incinerate ends up with 66% recharge enhancement from Mako's, plus my global recharge (57.5% currently), for a total recharge boost of 123%. I was under the impression that I would need about 145% total recharge to make the chain seemless or close to it; is that correct?

I might be able to tweak the overall slotting of a few other powers so that I can afford to frankenslot Incin. I'll take the advice and see what I can do, thanks!
  11. Sound advice, Nihilii. Focused Acc. <--> Conserve Power was a last minute swap when I was reworking the build. I haven't ran dry of End during prolonged battles since I added all the Recovery/+End procs, something I was very surprised by since levels 1-46 left me feeling like the Endurance Dysfunction poster child. Mind, that's on my current build... I'll crunch some numbers for the new build. I might go back to CP anyway, as I do like having it as a safety net.

I hadn't considered adding a second damage proc to Incinerate; I -really- like that idea. Also, good point about the HOs in AD. Thinking about it for a while I realized that without Grant Cover the DDR in it would be even more crucial, especially for ITFs.

Is there anything else I might have overlooked? Also, are there any Shielders out there who have taken Tough, OwtS, and Aid Self and have comments on their performance?

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!
  12. Hello fellow Scrappers,

I've been playing around with the build for my Fire/Shield Scrapper for quite some time now and, while I'm very happy with her current performance, I'm wondering if I could push it to the next level. Right now I'm mainly concerned with survivability; I feel like I could do more for her personal defenses. I'd like to really exploit the tools /Shield has that separates it from my other AV soloer, who is a Kat/SR. I like the idea of having more than just Defense to rely on for this character.

My goals for the build: Frequently running missions at +2-4/x8. Focused on solo efficiency for high levels only, since anything done while exemplared will happen with a team or use of a secondary build. AV/Pylon soloing. I'd like to be capable of tanking for a team when a Tanker isn't available, or isn't able to keep up with my Scrapperlock.

I'm still debating the choice to drop Hasten. I'd like to keep it, but I'm not seeing a way to do that without dropping my defenses below the softcap or loosing one of the other mitigation tools like Aid Self or OwtS. If anyone can find a way to do so with the build, I'm all ears!

Thanks in advance for the thoughts/suggestions!

Thank you! I was exceptionally happy when I found the name available back when I first snagged it, around the time WP and Dual Blades launched. I could totally see an SG like that, and I'm sure we both know folks who could run with a concept for "Insert," though I dare not speculate on the outcome.
  14. Congrats on fulfilling your New Years resolution, Christopher! Its definitely resulted in some awesome sketches and drawings. If you're still looking over references for characters to draw I humbly submit my character Shift, the Fire/Shield Scrapper, for your consideration:

  15. The more I think about it, the more I realize this is just like a train wreck: So horrible, yet you feel compelled to watch. @_@
  16. Thanks Bill and Psyber, I really appreciate the feedback! I think I'm going to go with Fire because I totally agree about the Immo (my friend with the Brute will love it). It also sounds like I'll have assistance in mezing the AVs and well... Here's the REAL selling point:

    Quote:
all I can say is "Melting faces is fun."
    That's sig worthy, right there.
  17. Hey all, I seem to have found myself in a bit of a bind. You see, I've decided to make my first Dominator and have settled on one of two combos: Mind/Thorn or Fire/Thorn. The problem being that I am absolutely torn between the two! I have a fair bit of experience with both sets that I gained while playing Controllers so I know what each set is capable of... But I'm not sure how exactly that translates over to Dominators. I do know for sure that I want to do /Thorns as my secondary.

First, a bit of information on what I'm looking for:
I'm concerned mainly with late level performance. I run as part of a trio or quartet a lot of the time, with a focus on Strike Forces such as the ITF, LGTF, and LRSF. Being able to solo well is a plus. I intend to invest heavily in the character, so "the sky is the limit" when it comes to build costs. The character will be exposed frequently to two main challenges: AVs and large mobs.

Some background info on my tastes:
I lean towards "support" classes [Defenders, Tankers, Controllers], especially ones that mix survivability with a good offense. Some of my favorite combos have included Fire/Kin Controller, Fire/SS Tanker, Storm/Sonic Defender, and Katana/ Scrappers. Being able to flow between support/lockdown and damage mode is of utmost importance to me. I also love seeing orange numbers.

I enjoy Mind/ for the grab-bag of control and the easy access to mez that most AVs have lackluster protection to. Also, Terrify is a beautiful thing! But as /Thorn will I find myself breaking the fear effect often enough to jeopardize myself and my team? Does the extra mez for particularly tough AV encounters outweigh that, if so? Fire/ appeals to the damage fiend lurking within me, but will it provide enough control for what I intend to do? Or could I potentially kick out enough damage as Fire/Thorn that Fire's comparatively light mez ability will be a non-issue?

Right now I'm not 100% sure what power sets my friends will be using. Chances are it will include at least one Brute and either another Dominator (Plants/) or something with buffs/debuffs.

I'll go ahead and end there for now. Thanks a TON in advance guys!

While looking over your build I noticed that you have room for a Steadfast Protection +Def IO if you want one, Spiritfox. You could slot it into Tough or Increase Density and add an addition 3% global defense. Just a thought, if you wanted to hit the softcap and didn't want to make any major changes to your build yet. Sorry if I pointed this out and you had already thought of it but decided to skip it.
  19. Thank you soooooo much NCSoft/Paragon Studios! I'm going to be putting this gift to good use. Now I can go ahead with my new alt plans without languishing over A) spending over $100 on transfers or B) having to delete characters. Is it time for GR yet?

On the plus side, at least they added the Jet Pack vendor there for those of us without TP/Fly who have trouble with those.
  22. That's really going to depend on what type of Scrapper you have, what their slotting is, and what your goals are. In other words, there are a lot of variables. My recommendation is to mosey over to the Scrapper forum, post some info about your Scrapper there and get some opinions. In a lot of cases the Regen/Recovery is very useful for a Scrapper, but YMMV.

Protip: If you do decide to sell it, look into crafting it first. You might be able to get even more Inf. for it that way.
  23. Thanks to Fulmens, my new solo SG on Virtue is off to a great start. Thanks a million (or 100 million as the case may be ) for doing this -- and best of luck on the project.
