  1. I'm not sure, personally. Sure, the quick tagging of threads can be useful for subsequent searches, but can you search by tags?
  2. NCsoft support comes through yet again!

    Response (Mike C.) 08/09/2009 12:01 PM Hello [ain't gonna tell ya]

    The fact that you had to get the game to run in Compatibility Mode just to solve a loading issue suggests that there's a system resources/system-side configuration issue at work here.

    Let's try starting the game in Safe Mode and then try adjusting the following video settings (You can reach these by going to Menu > Options > Graphics and Audio):

    Advanced Graphics Settings = Enabled
    Resolution = 1280x1024
    Particle Physics Quality = Medium
    World Texture Quality = Medium
    Character Texture Quality = Very High
    World Detail = 50%
    Character Detail = 100%
    Max Particle Count = 15000 (15 thousand)
    Vertical Sync = Disabled
    FSAA = Off
    Shadows = Disabled
    Shader Quality = Medium
    Water Effects = None
    Depth of Field = Disabled
    Bloom Effects = None
    Desaturation Effects = Disabled

    Once this is done, go ahead and click "Apply Now" and then restart the game client entirely.

    If any of these settings are grayed-out it just means your card does not support that option so you can disregard it. If this helps out you can go back and increase different features to find a balance with graphics and performance. Let us know what results you get.

  3. Hmm... given that I've installed long after that date and thus have no appropriate system restore points available, any ways to achieve that?
  4. After some experimentation, running the game in compatibility mode for Win98/ME of all things solves the loading issue, but that leads to another problem, though not completely game-stopping in this case - whenever something involving text happens, such as opening the Clues window or even just typing, the game takes a massive framerate hit. Even simply displaying a lot of text on the screen seems to halve it.
  5. Just installed W7 and figured I'd try running CoH. No such luck, though as both the loading screen and zones {well, zone} take a ridiculous amount of time to load. Has this problem appeared before, and if so, what are the possible solutions?

  6. Because Masterminds are special.

    Yes, I am bitter.
  7. Captain Generica? {not available, I tried}

    Also, this might be more of a Player Questions forum fodder.
  8. I suppose it depends on whether you're planning to focus on duoing with your tanker, or have the two of you be a part of a larger team. Archery has a very nice AoE potential with some decent single-target damage abilities, so it's fairly well-rounded, especially with the added AoE from Mental Manipulation. On the other hand, if you're expecting to engage small groups of enemies at a time, you might want to roll with a more of a "blapper" build, such as Electric. On the whole, other than the "play what appeals to you" philosophy, if you want to pick the most effective combination of powers, it pays to match the powersets with the situations you expect to be in.

  10. Bah-dammit! Curse you, fancy new boards!
  11. But there's no way to do so automatically? Specifically, when I use the quote or multiquote buttons, the post appears without the quoted bits.

    For example, when quoted, your post looks like {with brackets changed, ofcourse}:

    (quote=Tricia;2079207)(quote=Positron(quote=BaBs)I 'm awesome!(/quote)Psh. You wish, BaBsy.(/quote)

  12. New forum question - how do I quote a message which itself contains quotes? Specific example, if I wanted to reply to this post, addressing point-by-point, how would I also retain the bits that he himself quoted, so as not to lose the context? Neither quote nor multi-quote seem to do that.
  13. Easiest way to do it would be to click the channel name in your chat - that will give you the most common global channel options, including the MOTD.
  14. Another thing you could do is send a tell to their global {/getglobalname <insert character name here>} and ask politely whether they still play that character and, if not, would they be willing to relinquish the name. Odds are not in your favor, but it's still an option.
  15. Can you say overpowered?
  16. I wonder if that got anyone's attention.

    Anyway, I figured I'd try to make a unified thread for all the $variable suggestions. For the time being, we have but a handful - specifically, $name, $level and $archetype. On the other hand, that same system could be expanded to cover a much wider variety of variables to help with gameplay and communication, so I invite all and sundry to present their suggestions for various variables.

    Team-based:
    $leader - Leader of the current team
    $team_size - Size of the player's team
    $teammate1 through $teammate8 - names of current teammates. Returns an empty string if specified teammate doesn't exist.
    $team_AT - Returns an array of archetypes on the team, sorted alphabetically and delimited by commas {ex. Blaster, Blaster, Controller, Defender, Peacebringer, Tanker}

    Mission-based:
    $mission_name - Name of the current mission. Returns an empty string if no mission is set
    $mission_contact - Name of the contact who gave out the current mission. Returns an empty string if no mission is set.

    Any other suggestions?
  17. Not stupid, but slightly out-of-date. CoH and CoV were officially merged some time ago, so if you've got one, you've got the other.

I don't think that it's possible to get literally every single contact all the way up.
    Actually, in my experience, the only contact that doesn't give enough missions to fill up the bar is Tom Bowden or his mirror Hugo Redding. As for the Architect Guide, City Representative, Tutorial Zone contacts etc, they are a part of the group of transitory contacts which only appear in your contact list, active or otherwise, until you complete the tasks they offer - thus, it's up to you whether or not to count them. Also, most contacts have a "mirror" - someone with a different name and location, but who offers identical missions and only one of which you'll ever be introduced to, so it's quite impossible to acquire literally every contact in the game.

    And finally, as for whether it's worth it... that's entirely up to you.
  19. How the heck do I get rid of the damn _NA next to my name?
  20. Preface

    So, you've heard about something called an "Architect Chat" and want to know what the heck it is? Well, gather round children - it's story time.

    Once upon a time, when the Issue 15 rolled out, the developers implemented a new chat channel - Architect Chat, but due to... reasons, whatever they might be, the user interface wasn't updated to support it - it was not automatically added to anyone's chat tab, and there weren't even any graphical commands to speak in it, leaving the only ways to even know about it to be through fiddling with the chat tabs, word-of-mouth and Issue 15 patch notes. Owing to that, not many players even knew about it, let alone how to use it.

    What is it?

    Architect Chat is an official serverwide channel - that is to say that, like Help or Arena, anyone can talk in it from any zone they might be, whether in Paragon City or Rogue Isles, and likewise be heard by anyone else on that same server. Unlike global channels, it has no member capacity limit - in fact, everyone in the game already "has" it, and the only issue is adjusting the user interface to display the messages posted in it, but also unlike a global channel, it has the downside of being limited to its specific server - thus, someone speaking on the Guardian server AChat can only be heard by players on Guardian and not any other server.

    What is it for?

    The specific purpose of Architect Channel is subject to some debate. As there is no official* statement on what the channel should be used for, the opinions range from all-purpose teaming, social chatter, discussion of Mission Architect arcs, recruitment for the same and so forth. Thus, as things stand, and assuming no official word on the matter is forthcoming, it can be assumed that its use will eventually be established and enforced {inasmuch as possible, at least} via social pressure from its participants.

    How do I use it?

    The first step in using the Architect Chat channel is adding it to one of your chat tabs. The following is a step-by-step walkthrough of adding the AChat to a chat tab. Also, the same principle applies to adding any given chat channel to a chat tab, should you choose to tweak your chat settings.

    1. Right-click on your chat window and select "Edit Tab" option from the menu that will appear.
    2. The Edit Tab window will appear. Find the Architect Chat item in the right-hand column {under "Available channels"} and double-click it. That will move it to the left-hand column, adding that channel to the chat tab.
    3. Click "OK"
    Of course, simply being able to read what others say in the channel may be fine and dandy, but what if you want to talk in it? There are no options in the interface to use it. Instead, you need to use the slash command, which is /ma <insert message here>. On the other hand, if you don't want to type in /ma all the time, and instead want to prepare the command with a keybind or a macro? Well then, you're in luck.

    If you want to prime the chat for a message in Architect Chat using a macro, type this in: /macro MA "beginchat /ma [Lv$level $archetype] "

    If you want to prime the chat for a message in Architect Chat using a keypress, type this in: /bind numpad0 "beginchat /ma [Lv$level $archetype] " The "numpad0" argument is arbitrary - you can replace it with any key you want to activate the bind with.

    Also, if you've noticed that these commands are a bit more complicated than they should be, you're right - in addition to starting the chat with the AChat command, they will also follow it through with your current level and archetype, something that can prove useful on occasion.

    Conclusion
    This wraps up the basic guide for the Architect Chat. If you think I've forgotten to cover anything, feel free to contact me via this thread or through a private message and I'll make the appropriate adjustments.
