Quote:MORE SPOILERSThe first time someone in one of the books made a definite statement about who Jon's mother was, I was all "ah well, so much for that". The second time it happened, I thought "hm, so maybe nobody knows, after all. Interesting!"
I guess it could be possible. I vaguely recall that there was something off about the timing of the whole thing, that made me conclude that it was highly unlikely. But I can't remember what it was. Been a while since I had the whole timeline memorized.
What locked it for me is actually the way Sean Bean played some scenes in the show, amusingly enough. The scene where he tells Jon "you are a Stark of Winterfell, you might not have my name but you have my blood" and not "you are my son." There was someone else he referred to as a Stark of Winterfell. "She belongs here," he said.
Also the scene where he's talking to Robert, and Robert can't recall the mother's name and says he never got to meet her, and Ned says he never will.
Robert wants all the Targaryens dead. No way Ned would tell him about Jon.
Ned is so hopelessly honorable that it gets him killed and starts a war. No way would he be unfaithful to his wife.
Rhaegar was not the kind of man to kidnap and ****. Aerys, maybe. But not Rhaegar.
I've got more theories about how it all will end based on this idea, but I won't go on. Suffice it to say that I think I now get the real meaning of "A Song of Ice and Fire." -
Only around the edges, and in the part just before the edges. And the parts between there and the middle. And kind of in the middle area a bit as well...
Seriously, that's EXACTLY the plot of Red Dawn. And not in a "oh everything has been done before" kind of way, but in a "Yes, Last Man Standing really is Fistful of Dollars which really is Yojimbo" kind of way. -
Quote:I don't think it's unlikely at all. It's what I've been thinking for a while now. It's the only answer that makes sense to me.It's been definitively answered in the books, several times. Unfortunately, none of those answers are compatible, so we still don't know the truth of it. My pet theory is that Jon is really the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, but that's highly unlikely.

Quite so. In fact, Buffy's strike need not be all that well placed, or targeted at a vital nerve cluster or pressure point. Really just anywhere in the general face area would probably do it.

Quote:When I was in college some of the gamers I hung out with would have a weekly "who would win" night - it was basically like a debate club where each debater was assigned a side they had to argue, and they had a week to research and develop their argument.Ah, a "who'd win" thread. This is how I know I'm reading a comics forum.
Yeah, I hung out with HUGE nerds. And it was great. -
Yeah that sounds familiar. I'm sure that's what I was thinking of. There is a What If..? that examines what would have happened if Storm and some of the other X-Men characters had stayed in Asgard after all that happened, which I read, but I don't know if I ever actually read the original story it was based on.

Quote:While Widow is being patient and waiting for that one clean shot, Buffy is getting some magical help from Willow to protect her from sniper fire...Why do you assume Widow is going to be stupid enough to engage in hand-to-hand with someone who's demonstrating superhuman strength and speed by fighting things with superhuman strength and speed?
A few weeks of patience and one bullet. That's all that's required.
"Time to plan" favors Buffy a lot more than it does Black Widow, too. -
Quote:Again, the question is about who would win in a fight. Not in a scenario that you set up to favor one opponent over another.Sorry, but she's not going to dodge a sniper round. She'll never see the sniper, and will be dead before the sound reaches her.
Edit: And as Cap'n Foamy pointed out, if we're going to say Black Widow can get the jump as a sniper, we have to also allow the possibility that Buffy gets the jump with a shoulder mounted rocket launcher. -
Didn't Storm wield it at one point? It may have only been in a What If...? It's been a long time so I don't recall...

Quote:Heh, when I was first writing my previous post in which I said "star characters" I had originally said "Peter Dinklage" but I changed it because I didn't want to give the implicit spolier that Tyrion survives that long. There's no way they can do a season without Dinklage on screen, so obviously they will combine Feast/Dance somehow.
But I guess the cat's out of the bag!
Related observation, I love how GRRM writes because it can be considered a spoiler that major a character DOESN'T die before we get to the next book (or season). -
Quote:The question isn't "who might win if they get lucky enough?" - because the answer to that is "anybody."Nor would I assume she would succeed but as she is an assassin I would presume she is good at making sure she can catch a target unawares
In a hand to hand fight it would come down to Widow's greater experience and training vs the Slayer.
David beat Goliath
Batman defeated Superman (albeit Batman had YEARS to prep in case they ever fought)
Luke blew up the Death Star
Anakin blew up the Droid Army Control Station in Ep 1
Wedge+Lando blew up Death Star 2
Skill, training, and yes even luck (or the Force) can trump power. Granted that doesn't always happen of course.
The question is "who would win?" which implies "who is the most likely to win?" And the answer to that is Buffy, for reasons already given. -

Quote:That's my point - they will have to combine Feast and Dance to run concurrently, rather than do season 5 as Feast, season 6 as Dance.Keep in mind that while there are gaps in the written work that leave out key characters for extended periods, the events are largely concurrent. Lots of editing to chop and align, but I think they could manage around the periods that would seem like missing the main characters. Be a fun challenge as a screen writer, but some real hair pulling I bet.
-
Quote:That's true of course, but they have to balance that with boring the viewers with a lot of new characters and storylines that aren't directly related to the main characters already. Not sure I'd expect that.
They need to carefully pace so they do not out run the published material, and given GRRM's writing rate, that would be a real concern.
They might have Feast and Dance spread over two season (still they would certainly combine them, they aren't going to give some of the star characters a whole season off and then ask the audience to go back in time the following year) but I can't see them going any more than two at most. So one season or two, GRRM still has to get cranking on the remaining books. -
Quote:Yep, I don't see the ratings dropping on this until season 5, unless they make some big mistakes along the way. Season 5 could likely be slow or frustrating if not handled very, very well. I imagine there will be some major cuts, because I don't think they're going to want to drag out Feast and Dance over more than one season. I see (most of) those two books being combined into season 5 and, hopefully season 6 will pick up with Winds of Winter. From what I understand this show is getting great ratings numbers for HBO. If I had to guess even though this show is currently only guaranteed a third season I wouldn't really be surprised if it goes longer than that. It's probably one of those things where they can't announce any more than one season of renewal in advance.

Yeah. Buffy. No question. I like Black Widow well enough, but Buffy wins.
Edit: Also, Joss Whedon's description of the fight is awesome and needs to be put on film, or at least in a comic. -
Quote:That's the logical place to leave it.And it will end at an event referred to as "RW". I wonder what that could be?

I don't recall a shark sigil either, but I admit that at some points in the books there are so many houses and sigils thrown at you, it is entirely possible it's in there and I missed it.

Yeah it happens. I wasn't trying to imply any kind of opinion on the situation, just clarifying that it was not, in fact, included in the previous patch.
