I think... I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
And I was looking forward to this game, too, dammit. Then they go and [censored] it all up for me.
    GJ, Cryptic. Epic fail ^2.

My beef is simple: According to the Federation Space RPG's official wiki, among other sites I've searched, the Romulan star, Eisn, is identified as a G9 star. A G9 Star, according to this table, is listed as being 0.8 solar masses, 4/5ths the size of our own sun. And since the minimum mass for a star to go supernova is 1.4 solar masses, there's no way Eisn could ever go supernova and destroy Romulus.

I therefore DEMAND that this abomination of a movie be expunged from the Star Trek canon since the scriptwriters can't be bothered to do 10 minutes worth of research to make sure their story holds water among FORTY YEARS of legacy.

*polishes his Geek Badge of Honor*

    [/ QUOTE ]

Don't worry. They'll just explain it away by saying, well that's why the Romulans weren't expecting it either! Who knew?!!?

I don't think Cryptic screwed up the timeline. As much as I'd love to blame them for their mistakes that they've made on their own, this one goes straight to the Paramount/Star Trek idiots. From what I remember about the interviews from the BSG people who also starred in various ST episodes, you couldn't say one word off script in ST without going through a whole layer of bureaucracy.

Cryptic works within the timeline/confines of Star Trek, I doubt if they got to invent any canon without the express permission of Berman and whoever those idiots are now.
  5. I think you can do away missions with friends but I think you have to take over positions from the other person's crew or somesuch. To be honest I wasn't really paying attention after reading the timeline junk.

Tiger was built on a hardware platform Apple decided to retire, given that the returns of performance per dollar when compared to an Intel x86/x64 machine are pretty lousy. The PowerPC hardware was just too clunky - sure, it may have had a 2ghz cpu, which would be equivalent to a (ballpark figure) Intel 1ghz cpu.

Since Apple is 'aimed' at professional users of graphics intensive hardware, the change was deemed big enough to keep those users away from Microsoft, and encourage other users to return/adopt.

    [/ QUOTE ]

PowerPC wasn't 'clunky' as much as it was falling behind from a manufacturing/deployment point of view. Apple and IBM were the only desktop/laptop purchasers and the vast numbers required to sustain the research, development and manufacturing were always going to put them on a competitive disadvantage on one front or another.

The death knell for PowerPC on Apple hardware was when IBM decided that Apple should pay for the next generation of PowerPC laptop variant (low power 970/G5 and G6 desktops). Apple refused, and that was pretty much the end of PPC Macs. By 2005-2006 Apple had no choice but to pick x86/x64 if they wanted to remain price and performance competitive since the Intel/AMD wars had advanced x86 deployments so aggressively.

PowerPC still exists on high end iron, with POWER6 currently and POWER7 on the way, and today PPC thrives in low power applications as well, especially in satellite and automotive controllers. And PowerPC-like variants lives in the CPUs of Wii, Xbox360 and PS3.

The performance comparison you cite would be comparing a PPC970 of yesteryear to today's Core2/i7 CPUs. Hardly a fair comparison, but valid. I'd put the 970 up against the Pentium 4s, since they are of the same era, and actually of similar performance.

Q: Will everyone be the Captain of their own ship?
A: Yes, but you will have to earn the responsibility and skill to command larger and more powerful vessels. Remember, in Star Trek as well as naval tradition, whoever commands the ship is the "Captain," even if it is not your current rank.

    Top

Q: Can I play something other than a Captain like a Doctor or an Engineer?
A: Everyone is a Captain, (remember, if you command a ship, you are automatically a Captain), and you will command a crew, but that does not limit your role. Your character will still be able to choose from a variety of career paths, such as Engineer, Tactical Officer, Doctor, Science Officer, etc. Your career path is your root, and will affect your skills, and how you command your crew. Consider Jean-Luc Picard, Beverly Crusher, Worf and Kathryn Janeway. Picard was an archeologist and diplomat, Crusher was a doctor, Worf a security/tactical officer, and Janeway was a scientist. Each eventually chose a career in command and became ship captains. This does not mean the game will limit your ship choices based on your profession – far from it. The examples are simply an example of how the game design was inspired.

Timeline included to show the current movie but therefore talks about Romulus being destroyed and Spock sent back in time (ugh):

    [ QUOTE ]
How do Star Trek Online and the new movie interact, and where does the timeline diverge?

*diagram that makes your heart break*
In the movie, two characters travel back in time from the year 2387. When Nero arrives in the year 2233, he disrupts the time continuum, creating an alternate reality from the point of his arrival. Star Trek (the new movie) takes place in this alternate reality. This is explained in the film in a conversation between Uhura and Spock on the bridge of the Enterprise.
Star Trek Online is set in the "prime" Star Trek reality. This is the timeline of the five television series and the first 10 movies. It is the world in which the Gorn attacked Cestus III, Kirk fought Khan in the Mutara Nebula, Picard explored the galaxy, the Federation fought the Dominion War, Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant and Captain Archer and the crew of the NX-01 showed us how it all began.
Events in the movie that happened in the prime timeline (the destruction of Romulus, and the disappearance of Spock and Nero) have affected STO. You can learn more about the aftermath of these events in the Path to 2409 and in STO itself.
So how can the movie and STO be in different realities? When working on Star Trek, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman referenced the theory of quantum mechanics, which allows for the simultaneous existence of parallel timelines and universes. Parallel universes are self-contained, separate realities that exist as a consequence of different choices and outcomes. This concept was explored in the TNG episode "Parallels," in which there were thousands of alternate timelines (and thousands of Enterprises!). It also is seen in the Mirror Universe, which is a darker take on the world of the Federation.
There are many, many stories to tell in the prime universe. The fallout of the destruction of Romulus and the upheaval that causes in the Alpha and Beta quadrants creates storytelling opportunities that we at Cryptic didn't even imagine when we first began working on STO. We're excited by the possibilities, and fans should be as well. The best is yet to come.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Double ugh. To try and insert Archer's timeline into the canon is even lamer. Time travel is such a weak plot device that the writers for Star Trek may as well make N.C.C. 74M3-0H Shark with Captain Fonz at the helm. The only other storyline that was destroyed more thoroughly is NBC's "Heroes".

The Power of Black Scorpion Click power given to Masterminds *is* broken. A fix is in the pipeline; not sure when it will reach live.

    How it broke:
Basically, just before the deadline, I completely rebuilt the power to do something different from what it had done before. The previous version had always been problematic and it just wasn't working out, so I replaced it with something more reliable at the 11th hour. Unfortunately, there was an error in my testing process and I failed to detect that, unless you had Dev Tools enabled, the power simply wouldn't actually trigger on Reichsman. So, you can use the power on him all day...and the attributes simply don't process.

This was caught just before launch, and I fixed it, but the fix had not gotten through the production process in time.

    2. The rewards for the villain SF are the same as the hero TF. 20 merits. Given the increased level of complexity of the SF, it would appear that villains get screwed again. It is likely that the developers haven't benchmarked the times of the new TF/SF given the last minute changes leading up to launch. I think the merits on both will be bumped, probably 25 for the TF and 45 for the SF.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Foxbat, er, Horatio already stated in his very first post on the forums that the rewards will be increasing for the SF, and that they will be datamining and expect them to go up more in the future based on the datamining.

He also gave some insights into the TF and SF as well as indicating that he will be adjusting the story so it fits more in line with existing canon.

For those wondering why I called him Foxbat at first, he will ALWAYS be Foxbat to many of those that know the Hero Games characters he created. Likely the most famous of all those characters is Foxbat.

It's a shame Bruce can't use that name on the forums here.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Don't really follow the other forums much, or stalk the devs, but 30 is still a little light. In his post he says:

    [ QUOTE ]
To start, there is a difference in the challenge of the final fight in the SF and TF. The TF fight is much trickier and takes longer. We didn’t address that when assigning the initial merit values for the SF. We will be increasing the merit award for the Strike Force to 30 merits later this week. As time goes by and we collect more data on how long it takes groups to complete these arcs, we’ll likely be adjusting the merit rewards further.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think he meant the SF in the second sentence (or should have said SF), but interesting nonetheless.
  11. The villain SF is much more challenging than the hero TF. Whilst the villain one is more fun for the SF/TF connoisseur, I can see how the SF is more tedious and frustrating for those who just want to go with PUGs or who just want a casual experience.

    1. The TF can be done in under 30 minutes, and 20 minute times are probably doable. The SF can be done in under 90 minutes, but I think it would take an exceptional team to get it done in under an hour. I believe that sub 45 minute times are doable, but it would likely be a very structured and disciplined team that would have to be assembled.

    3. The SF has an escort. Since villains are already scarred from the RSF technician, I guess someone decided to flog the villains some more by inflicting another NPC that can and usually does get lost and vator freaks. Can someone please fix this annoying issue? Of course both the RSF and this escort have massive Longbow spawns so it is quite easy to get team wiped since you are not able to use stealth/AoE stealth to your advantage.

    4. The final boss isn't classified as an AV or Hero in the mission, which is interesting. Too bad the hero TF he is kind of vanilla in his makeup, which he is much different in the SF.

4a. The SF version he does have more interesting responses/powers, but in some ways it seems like a crutch to give underperforming ATs a buff specifically for this SF.

In any event, if you bring more than 1 MM on your team, you should have a stalker to zap the ambushes (4 shots), since the ambushes are the most likely thing to overwhelm the squishies and pets since it is quite difficult to kill all the spawns fast enough.

If you do not have a stalker to zap the spawns, it can happen that your team wipes. Note that the ambushes will keep coming once they have started, although the ambushes will eventually run out. If you do have wipes and come back into the mission, note that the (new) ambushes will come out of the main room and chase you. This makes progressive wipes difficult since squishies travelling to the main room will get ambushed as they are coming back. A solution to this is to tp your friends to you.

If you keep getting ambushed from more than one side, there are alcoves on the map in which your team can hole up and manage the aggro by placing the tough guys/gals further front and then defeating all the incoming mobs. Once the ambushes are exhausted you should be able to defeat the final boss without interruption.

Theoretically it is possible to defeat the boss without zapping the spawns but the current MM temp power cannot unphase the boss, lengthening the time to beating him and therefore increasing the number of ambushes. Until the MM temp power is fixed, you should bring a stalker to zap the ambushes.

Note that the boss cannot leave the room. He will teleport back if he passes the carpeted area, so you cannot lure him into the narrow caves. The ambushes are not restricted to the room.

The final 4 AVs that you have to lead seem to spawn in the same location each time. It does seem possible that the AVs can be defeated by NPCs before being escorted to their destination. I don't know what will happen if you let that pass. Try not to buff the AVs since you have to fight them later.

4b. The TF is much simpler at the end. The boss fights and as his health goes down 4 more AVs will 'wake up' and fight your team. The order in which they wake is random, and you must defeat all 4 AVs and the boss to finish the mission. The boss has no phase power like in the SF version and in one run we kept beating on him, spawning all 4 AVs and fighting them all at the same time. This was done without a tank, but with 4 defenders, a controller, a scrapper and 2 blasters, just to illustrate how much more simple the TF is than the SF.

In both the SF and TF, shivans weren't necessary but vengeance did help a lot. Kinetics also plays a big role, especially in the SF, where the fight seems to go on longer.
  12. MMs do ok during the raid.

All you *have* to do is send in your bots one at a time into the goo to keep the blue that is assigned to you distracted while the raid goes in. As the raid progresses (ie. once yellows are down) you can go in if you want and multitask.

This means keeping your bots on your blue and helping the green team. Usually this is holds, if you have one, and rezzing, if you can. And buffing/debuffing as appropriate. Once the greens are down everyone goes in and helps defeat the blues (with ranged attacks) and then you can concentrate on hami.

Rinse and repeat for each round, or flavour as necessary depending on the raid leader's plan.
  13. perma cane is fine if you know how to use superspeed to tighten up the mobs instead of pushing them out.

  15. Allies are still changed from launch, without word that it is a bug or permanent. This means that when you rescue a 51 ally, they will exemplar to 50 in your level 50 mission. For some reason level 50 EB allies lose a level when rescued too. When they lose their connection to you they jump back up a level.

Talk about bait and switch. Multiple bug reports and reporting in the main thread have had no effect on any feedback on whether this is working as intended or a bug.

No point in trying to balance my mission if they will revert it back to the way it was at launch.

At least I am able to make MM minions with gang war again.

Jack Zodiac will always be a shining example of how to conduct yourself when your time with an MMO is up. If you talked to him within the last 6 months of his playing... it was not surprising that he was unhappy with the game and he was leaving. But on the forums he posted like he always did and made no forum drama-waves about it.

If you talked to him about why he was leaving (in private) he would say that he loved CoH, but it wasn't the MMO for him anymore. And that he wouldn't get into details with anyone about it, he would just fill out the survey thingie and send his opinion straight to the only people that it really counted with.

He said his goodbyes to people that needed to know he was leaving, let them know how to contact him (SURPRISE there was ways to stay in touch with people you know in-game outside of having a sub here) and then he was gone.

No spamming the boards with rage directed at the Devs, no derailing threads at any opportunity to express his dissatisfaction with the game, no threats of quitting unless his demands were met.

Everyone should follow the Emperor's example.

    [/ QUOTE ]

So as long as you're not upset then everyone else should just suffer quietly? I think that most everyone here who has posted has been posting with fairly cogent and eloquent responses. It is when the community is feeling let down that there should be a way for everyone to discuss what is wrong (or right). This includes things like bans and dev actions, although that isn't the sole focus.

One of the goals of making waves is that they feel that there is a genuine problem within the system that needs addressing in order in improve things. Just because you do not see it does not mean it doesn't exist. When someone like choake starts venting his frustrations in this manner, perhaps you should be concerned. I've never met someone who loved this game more, and he has always been one of the most approachable and friendly players on Justice.

So Jack Zodiac left in a manner that you felt was noble. Great guy, I only talked to him a couple of times. But his leaving didn't solve any of his disappointments with the game. He just chose not to care about it anymore. If you believe that everyone has a time that would be 'up' in an MMO, then I suppose that everyone should just pass on quietly such as not to disturb the others who are on their way out.

Me, I believe in MMO immortality. And singularities that collapse upon themselves.
