I'm not sure why you are blaming Koreans for offering RMT services. I've long since locked down my in-game email, so I just searched google for coh RMT and PL services, then I did a whois on them.

Out of 12 of the top results I found that still offered CoX services (some went to other MMO games so I discounted those)

    6 were from China
    2 were from Hong Kong
    2 were from California
2 were obfuscated to prevent casual whois searches (although one hid in a .zh domain)
Zero were from Korea (North or South)

More than half the searches resulted in Chinese registered domains, and probably the Hong Kong domains are fronting for Mainland based labour.

American registered domains are probably outsourcing to China, India or Mexico, but can be anywhere else in the world...maybe even Detroit (I'm kidding...sort of).

Show me where Korea is this hotbed of RMT that overwhelms the searches I've found or get off this Korea nonsense.

The use of labour for RMT presumes that whoever is doing the farming is doing it because it pays better than whatever else they could find in their local job market, and it also presumes plentiful electricity and good internet connection so they can 'work the game.'

South Korea has the latter, but the former, labour rates, are high enough where performing RMT labour would be a money loser for everyone there.

North Korea is the opposite. Cheap labour but zero internet access...and electricity.

It was just all that nerfed base salvage I converted over. I just wanted to verify the maximum amount of Brainstorms you could keep.

Since I have no real need to convert Brainstorms into invention salvage (I have that coming out of my ears), Brainstorms are worth more to me than whatever I can convert it to.

Besides, keeping them around satisfies my hoarding urge.

Heh, just remember that there were a whole other half of the country fighting against North Korea as well. I think those people were Koreans too.

Anyhow, back to the OP. I don't understand how anyone else having something in *this* game is putting anyone else's nose out of joint. This is not a zero sum game and there is nothing that is unique within the game that someone else cannot get, given enough effort and smarts.

There is no 'autowin' button in this game, even with extra loot and PvP IOs and purples. A good player will be able to defeat an average player who has better loot so while there is a handicap to having a lesser toon, there is no way a fully equipped IO toon is going to single handedly dominate a zone.

Most of the really good PvPers I know have toons on both sides, and if one faction is dominating another in zone PvP, they will switch sides in order to balance the odds better. You may ask why they would do this? Because a challenge is more rewarding, and if you dominate too thoroughly the person you beat to a pulp 52 times will never come back, which lessens the PvP fun in the end.

Also insinuating that people who have greater assets than you is somehow due to buying from RMT only is a bit rich. Granted, I do play this game a *lot*, and I don't PvP, but everything that I've gotten I've earned. Marketeering is a fair part of the game and I've sold high and bought low just because it is fun in its own fashion.

In fact, I've gotten so much loot that I've complained about it in this thread.

If you're complaining that there is someone better than you at accumulating stuff, that's life. If you somehow think that being at 97th percentile in terms of wealth is always going to make you inferior to the 99th percentile guy, whether its assets or equipped toons, I believe you are somehow missing out on the bigger picture.

Since you can't *buy* merits from RMT, I'll just leave you with a couple of images so you can think about what other players are capable of doing without needing to buy from 'teh Koreans.'

The Mac is set at 1080p. The games do not distinguish between 1080p and 1080i. They just know to set the full screen resolution to 1920 x 1080. And i think it encounters the 1080i setting first in the monitor configuration and just goes with that. A couple games allow me work arounds to set it back to 1080p. But not CoH. Not over DVI.

So yeah, my issue is resolved for now with the VGA->Mini DisplayPort. Hopefully I can find a DisplayPort to MiniDisplayPort cable and that will fix this all for good.
Did you try the 1080p 74.6 Hz settings over DVI->DVI in SwitchResX?

  9. I think the problem with the OP's post is that everything should be easily attainable for the casual player.

I am not in agreement with that sentiment, since it would remove any impetus for people to play the game long term.

The bottom line question for the devs is, are there things that should be hard or damn near impossible to get by the casual player?

Some of these 'impossible' tasks include epic badges
    1. Most of the high number badges were farmed for so the devs reduced the amount necessary to get them.

    2. "Master of..." badges. Most people who simply farmed for the badges in #1 were stymied by MoSTF and MoRSF. New Mo badges have been introduced and people tend not to complain about them anymore.

    3. Super rare drops. Purple IOs. Purples seem to drop often enough to make me happy. Just enough to make me wonder if I'm going to 'ever get another', and then I get a drop. I've had 2 drop in successive missions even, and I've known people who got 2 in one mission.

    4. PvP IOs. Technically not as rare as they are, since people are not PvPing to get these. There likely more farmers providing the market with PvP IOs than are dropping from players PvPing each other. Since PvP IOs are still quite new, there's no real indication of how long they will stay expensive.
There's no point to opening up supply if the demand can be filled in another month or two, or even six. The point is of PvP IOs is not to fill the market, but to attract players to PvP. If the drops are going to plentiful and cheap on the AH, then there's still no point to going in to PvP zones. Having a chance of getting a 2B recipe is still a better enticement at this point.

If you take away the tough things to get for the hardcore players, then is there any impetus for them to keep playing other than the content treadmill?

Second, video cards that aren't really expensive have a really complicated matrix of which sizes of monitor it can drive at which resolutions. Apple created Dual-Link to get around it, but I don't know if your configuration supports it.

And third, I don't even know if the game is capable of producing that resolution in progressive scan mode.

I could probably do some tests here, but the closest I have is a Sony TV with HDMI, and a DisplayPort on my Macbook Pro. The results I get might not equal yours. Sorry, I wish I could be more help - hopefully I pointed you in the right direction?
I don't think that the NEC model the OP is referring to is a TV, it's just that the Mac/Video card is trying to address the monitor like a TV when he plays CoX full screen at native resolution.

It sounds like the monitor is seeing the mac change modes to 1920 x 1080 and forcing the mac to use an 1080i instead of 1080p.

Is your video cable a DVI to DVI connection? Not a DVI to HDMI connector?

  13. You should turn vsync off in game as well if you're worried about capping frame rates.

This post from here might help.

    Refresh Rates

Bad news: I can't get it to do 75 Hz at 1080p over DVI.

Good news: It can do up to 74.6 Hz at 1080p over DVI and 81 Hz at lower resolutions without skipping frames!

These are the timing parameters I used to get 74.6 Hz at 1080p:

    Horizontal active: 1920
    Horizontal front porch: 25
    Horizontal sync width: 35
    Horizontal back porch: 45
    Horizontal total: 2025

    Vertical active: 1080
    Vertical front porch: 3
    Vertical sync width: 4
    Vertical back porch: 5
    Vertical total: 1092

You can also use those settings to do 72 Hz at 1080p.

That said, had I entered and won, I probably would have rolled because I know you could easily get two LotG 7.5s and an Oblit in rolls for the price you'd pay in merits for one LotG.
Depends on the chances of winning with the lottery tickets I guess.

If you have no use for the Mac OS you should install Bootcamp on the mac so you can reboot the mac straight into windows during your turn at the computer.

It does require some slight technical knowledge, I would have thought it'd be on par with installing a VM, so you might be hooped again.

    1. It buffs LR with 30% To-Hit. So you might want to keep tank's defense above 75% to softcap tank against LR.
    2. It buffs LR with 400% recharge speed. That would allow LR summon his pets 2-4 times during final fight. Unless you have enough of mitigation against them (ice patch, repel, repulsion field, hurricane, etc.) these, potentially, might become an issue.
I like the extra summons on a fast team with a kinetic since you get that extra damage boost in fulcrum shift. I've noticed LR's health seems to fall much faster when the banes come out to play and a kinetic is on the ball with the FS. Also with kinetic transfusion the extra to recharge speed that LR has is mitigated as well.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Mission 4- There are 2 ambushes for each Security Chief? be sure not to move on untill both ambushes are taken care of. Also having a player that knows where all the Chiefs? are is a big help.

Those are the two big ones i can think of right now
With ++def you can safely skip most of that. Usually a tough guy goes in first to clear the vines or else I drop a PA in front of the tree to make it salivate over them for a bit, but for the most part being def capped really makes it a non issue.

The same goes for the sec chiefs. With defense so high everyone just rushes and cherry picks the chiefs until the real one is found. Then usually we have enough trollers to slow down the ambushes while we cherry pick the AVs.

If you decide to move slowly or you don't have any +def buffers, both points are correct in that you should clear them before proceeding in the way Tiger said.

i like the idea of practice.... been thinking of incorporating practice runs
The concept of a Master run is stressful when you first look at doing it for STF. Our master runs were taking about 1.5 -2 hours to get the badge for all the various people who were asking, although I got the badge on the first day (2nd try).

What I've found in general practice (probably near a thousand runs of STF since it first came out and about 40-50 Master runs) is that the main reason why a Master run was difficult was because everyone viewed it as an exception.

We were fully capable of doing normal everyday STF speed runs in under 40 minutes, yet somehow the MoSTF was not fast at all. This broke the natural rhythm of the team and made things feel forced at many times. The heightened anxiety tended to drag and by the time the final mission rolled around, people were at their worst when they needed to be at their best.

In order to change things up, I reformulated our MoSTF runs to be slightly modified versions of our normal STF runs and modified our speed runs to approximate a MoSTF run. This gives 2 main benefits.

    1. Our previous STF runs used vengeance and shivans often, and I felt this was a crutch. They are pretty much optional nowadays, and we rarely look at the team build other than making sure we have +def buffer and either PA or tank. The overall time savings to avoid needing to run to Bloody Bay for shivans helps too, although if someone feels like grabbing shivs no one really minds either.

    2. A fast MoSTF run that fails is better than a slow MoSTF run that fails. Everyone was always on pins and needles through every mission of the STF. A fast Mo run everyone acts the same as a normal STF run.

    3. A MoSTF run feels like a fast STF run so practice is always the same as live as much as possible. Nothing feels forced and everyone is relaxed. It's not a big deal to fail since a Mo run only adds about 10-15 minutes overall to a normal speed run.

    4. Practice runs are fast. Everyone can pitch in at any time since they know it's only going to take about an hour from recruiting to disbanding. Also fast runs means that practice can be held more frequently and involve more people so you have a large pool to draw from when the MoSTF runs happen. It also means that you get a better feel of where exceptions can take place and how to deal with them.

    5. Buff stacking. Fast TF runs can take advantage of the multiple buff stacks when zoning, so your team can be at the def cap for the first 2-4 minutes of each mission. With that level of defense, our standard STF pattern for the 4 sig AVs is to herd them all around a corner and have at it for a few minutes. Basically the goal is to drop GW and Scirocco within the first 2 minutes before the buff stacks drop. In practice runs we have shivans and HVAS out too, but with a decent rad/son/kin combo and damage dealers the pet temps really aren't necessary. The other 2 AVs can be dealt with more leisurely.

    6. We always skip the blue tower. It doesn't do much compared to the other towers.

    7. You can always rezone to stack buffs again before confronting LR for your buffer and tank.

Here's an example of a good MoSTF

    50 minutes MoSTF

36:00 STF with red and blue towers intact

  22. An interesting aside with regards to merits. Everyone has claimed all their merit rewards except one person, and without exception, every winner has chosen to pick a specific recipe(s) as opposed to rolling.

Nothing wrong with choosing specific recipes, but I was surprised that no one wanted to take the chance of not getting any decent drops, even though the general sentiment is that rolling strategically can be more profitable when looked at from an influence/infamy standpoint.

    Just an observation.
